I was looking around the thread and couldn't find anything on this..

    I noticed Newegg carries multiple DDR3 1333 : 10600, 10660 and 10666. CPU-ID reads 10700..

Which is the correct to buy? Also whats the fastest memory the motherboard can handle?

    Thanks!

I've posted it before. It's mostly limited by the hard drive speed.

It applies to virtually all laptops. It is a generally accepted rule of operation to never close the lid on a running laptop...give it some breathing room. It is just right if you close it until the screen light goes out and stop there.

If you have to restore from the recovery partition, you will have to re-activate Windows over the phone. You will have to do this every time you restore.

With the SLIC table in place, Windows will know it came installed on your laptop and will not complain when you restore from the recovery partition.

Edit: Risco was concerned because he thinks it may hurt the resale value of his laptop. Personally, I would recommend imaging (Macrium Reflect or Acronis) the drive after you delete all the bloatware you don't want and get the system just how you like it. Both programs should let you create recovery DVDs (or just one large image file on an external hard drive), which you can use to restore your laptop to the exact state in the image (in case your hard drive dies or something).

Thanks stevedogg, So is there a limit to the # of times Microsoft will let you call them and reactivate? If I use the recovery DVDs that I made when I first got the laptop will I still have to call?

I'm not really sure how it works . Maybe after the first time, you can just activate on the internet. I know that retail Windows licenses tend to allow something like 10 activations before becoming invalid, but you just call Microsoft and have them reset the counter (explaining your legitimate situation, of course).

    This is very strange.
I don't understand why ASUS chose to hide the SLIC.
I wonder if it is some sort of mistake with the new mainboards or they want to shift away from having activation with the SLIC method.

Or maybe these mainboards were intended for another country where they sell the N61 without a windows on it.

We have to wait for the Risco's notebook to come back and see if they replace the mainboard again or if they have a tool to make the SLIC reappear.

If ASUS has to activate the SLIC on every new mainboard when they build it in then it could be that the two repair centers did the same mistake.

If you use recovery partition/dvds you have to call to microsoft only if you have reinstalled/upgraded a piece of hardware or formatated drive C

"When activation is performed, Windows saves a record of the hardware in the user's machine. If the system is booted up with significant hardware changes (such as replacing the motherboard or the hard disk or memory at the same time[6]), Windows will require immediate reactivation to prevent the possibility that the same copy of the operating system has been installed on two different systems.[6] However, from Windows XP Service Pack 1 onwards, the user is given a three day grace period to reactivate in this particular case.[10] Windows XP allows you to modify six pieces of hardware or the Network Card and three other pieces of hardware.[9]"
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Product_Activation

Is the same on windows 7 maybe worse.

The USB 3.0 firmware 3.0.2.5 package contains a new driver also in the same package.

If you double click on RENESAS-USB3-Host-Driver-2040-setup.exe then it will updates the driver to v2.0.4.0. :)

Microsoft are fairly lenient when it comes to software activation. I reinstalled XP Home on my old PC like 20 times over a few years, and I simply said to them that I was reinstalling and I've done it several times in the past and they just go and give you a number. That is if you even need to reactivate.

I was hesitant to update that since it didn't follow the usual incremental version increase. Newest on ASUS website was 1.0.19.0 (NEC), so 1.0.20.0 seemed safe :). Not sure what 2.0.4.0 is ? Maybe the controller chip itself is Renesas, and NEC simply provides the board?

I don't know which of the two companies actually produces the USB3.0 chip. Basically both are now one company. Renesas and Nec have merged back in April.

I have to tell you that I definitely do better and FAST results with the drivers from Asus 1.0.180.

1.0.120 is sloooooow and 2.0.4.0 do not see my seagate 7200 momentum in his enclosure...

I'm having a lot of IE8 crashes on this system now. Guess I should bite the bullet and cross over to Firefox. But I wondered if anyone else ie experiencing this. I run W7/IE8 at work on my main system and haven't had this prob nearly as much as I've had on the N61. Anyone know if one of the proprietary apps is causing the conflict?

Damn, so it was the same with you then? Wonder what Asus are playing at? Mine is currently in rma. One thing do not use the restore disk that came with your machine, it will kill the boot manager and you will be unable to restore which is what happened to me. Really mad at Asus!

Well I'm late to this thread, but I just bought two of the N61JQ-X1's. I got them for $914 each.

I went back and forth between many different models and manufacturers, and really wanted a backlit keyboard, but just couldn't get around the value of getting a decent graphics card, i7, and the built in accident warranty. If I compared price to price of different laptops, I could get some other laptops for very close to the same price, but the processor was always i5 or even AMD, or even if all else was equal, if I wanted an accident warranty I would be paying another $129-$149. Is a backlit keyboard worth that much? I just didn't think so.

A relative works at a company that bought several Asus laptops and they've had great support, so that was enough to push me over the edge. I wish I had $1800 to spend on one computer, but I had to get two, and I couldn't get past the deal on this model.

I guess I'll be deciding on whether or not to delete bloatware or reformat and start over that way. They are supposed to get here tomorrow! :D

Risco, So since I could not find the SLIC I decided to try a restore with the recovery partition. Well everything worked fine and there was no windows validation issue. So maybe the SLIC issue doesn't come up when using the recovey partition if you have not done a clean install which I have not. Anyhow since I don't know anything about this Risco I am just telling you what happened incase it helps you with your situation. If I can check anythig else for you let me know.
Thanks to Stevedogg (King of driver updates!) :notworthy: I will be heading straight to his driver update thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html#post6388295 and get this thing up to date. :D

Hey guys, got my Asus N61JQ yesterday =D

It's waaaay better than my old G51, but I'm having some problems with the Elan Touch-Pad =(

When I first used it, it was perfect, so I decided to format it and install everything the way I like and now every single drive is working but the Elan Smart-Pad drive.

I can't get it to work properly, it's all crazy, identifying 3 fingers when I'm only using 1, etc....

I could use it without the drivers, but I really want the multi-touch functions. =(

Anyone had some problems like this one?

    Thanks.

Hi, i just got my N61JQ recently and i got a few questions regarding the updating of the drivers. I downloaded the chipset and wireless lan latest driver,so after i extracted the files, all i can see is alot of folders popped out plus an exe application, what i did was just run the exe application,so the question is do i have to place the other folders in their respective places on my hard drive or can i just delete them away? sorry for this noobie question,i sucks at technology =P And another question is can i increase the framerate to more than just 60 hz? Thanks alot for ur time to read this post =)

Yes after you have run the installer and completed the installation you can delete the extracted folder/files and it won't harm your Windows.

I'm pretty sure the refresh rate is a maximum of 60 which is usually typical.

you should be able to hike it up, just right click on the desktop , click on "screen resolution", then "advanced settings" . now you should go under the "monitor" tab and you will be able to change the refresh rate.

What brand/model mouse do you have? Can you update it's firmware?

Maybe an option like Wake-on-USB in the bios needs to be enabled.

some games allow you to change the refresh rate, e.g. Dirt 2, if a game can change the refresh rate, then there has to be a way to change it in the system.

but on the other hand, if you cant, then i guess the laptop just does not permit us from altering the refresh rate.
    regardless of what we do.

hey after all only if your having problems with the screen flickering do you need to worry about changing it.

    oh!, well good then.

so again right click on desktop, click on "Nvedia control panel"
now on the left-hand-side, under "Display" is the "change resolution" tab.

now see if you have the option of changing, if not then you should try what i mentioned earlier.

I had the problem of replugging my mouse (Razer Lychesis) every time my desktop started up but it went away after I updated the firmware. Using the same mouse on my laptop doesn't need replugging either.

What BIOS version are you using? I'm running 206 (When you start up press delete a few times once the ASUS logo shows up and it will boot you into the BIOS)
