    Thanks a lot. :spinny:

I think there are only two memory slots on N61JQ. The
N71JQ has also only two of them.

The system can fit two 4gb modules, but you should wait for prices to drop down to ddr2 prices.

Steps to install windows on your SSD:

-download windows Home Premium x64 bit

-extract contents of the Win 7 ISO to your hard drive, winrar is good for this

-download the Key-Cert-Branding tool from the mydigitallife forums. This program is used to activate win 7 with an OEM license. it can be used to pirate windows so I can't post any links but i think it's ok to mention since we aren't doing anything nefarious here

-run the Win7 setup program, choose to install to the SSD. don't enter a CD key when asked, just click 'next'

-reboot to the windows install on your SSD

-run the Certification tool and install a CD key and certification files, your windows install on the SSD should now be activated and genuine

    -format the 500gb drive (optional)

Anyone think Asus should make the fan run on higher speed then current? It seems GTAIV can kill this laptop around a year of use, with both cores under full stress and heat was starting to spread out to the palm surface and vent pushing hairdryer temperature under such low speed.

So i break in and this is what i saw http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/4864/newsave.jpg

That is officially JQ's mobo revise 208 BIOS version. Tell me if your mobo looks is different.

I've tried your recommendation. Rebooted to safe mode, ran Plants vs Zombies and unchecked the "full screen" box. Booted back to normal mode, and the game crashed again. So I repeated the process, and this time when I tried to uncheck the box, the game popped up a dialog box with a message saying I couldn't turn off "full screen mode". It turns out that the game itself doesn't allow "windowed" mode to be selected unless the display is in 16-bit or 32-bit colour, which it isn't in safe mode. So, in summary, there's no way to uncheck the "full screen" box in safe mode, and I can't uncheck it normal mode because it crashes straight up. Hahaha, such fail.

But the whole problem is just puzzling. I had no problems with either PvZ or Torchlight when I was running my 6-yr-old Acer with Windows XP. And from all accounts I've read on the web, noone else seems to have problems running under Windows 7 either.

Thanks for the tip, I did actually remember to update DirectX after reinstalling, so I'm running DX11 =)

    Oh hey guys i managed to get;

    - Idle temp 39C GPU, 33C CPU with custom power saving set.
    - Idle temp 44C GPU, 36C CPU with max power setting.

    - CPU multi-thread stress test with WinRAR 58C
    - CPU single-thread stress test with WinRAR 56 - 62C (TurboBoost)

Fan speed was 4.2k RPM, now just 2.4kRPM

GTAIV now play with around 60C GPU, 67C CPU with max power.

What i did only remove the bottom cover, 2 books on left right to lift it up abit and have a 8inch/200mm system fan with external power on the back that's it.

    Have fun cooling it. ;)

    Cheers

There is an other way to cool your laptop, disassemble the screen ant put the base on fridge door closed and you go only with screen and bluetooth keyboard/mouse. you will have near 0C

Lol open cover won't do enough, need to lift and have a fan behind to circulate the airflow down under it. But yeah i'll check out your review if you could link it here please. ;) Cuz i wouldn't know your topic title...

Stock thermal compound that is ;)

The craziest idea i had while ago in my mind was to make a 'mini-aircon' that blows freezing air on the heatpipes :D

EDIT: Oh and i was wrong about the GTAVI gaming temp. The CPU was around 62C not 67C.

:D well taking off the cover is interesting, but you can't carry it around. i suggest that you get a cooler with movable fans. its gotten very good results. you can direct the air right at the vents. you will be able to use the laptop on your lap. :)

    Cooler Master NotePal U2

this is a really detailed review. have fun ! and please put the cover back on.

Lol there's no large vent for intake, that's why i remove the cover. There's no point using the screws now when putting the cover back as the cover itself have clips so it doesn't fall off itself and can remove easily when needed. Hell of a quality design

And btw i never like the laptop cooler pad, insufficient cooling power with USB.

I recommend use DCV12 fan with external power, this Antec BigBoy 200 is my fan (not my PC)

    http://www.johnhok.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/036.jpg

I actually introduced this cooling methold on other forum site and was using on my Dell.

Looking for a Notebook Cooler... ... Antec Bigboy doesnt come with LED and it works very quiet around -24db on high fan speed (It has 3-speed switch).I do t ...

GPU-Z or Everest Ultimate can do. GPU-Z is free tho. I use Everest personally. Download it here free http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

Everest Ultimate is actually the all-in-one package to review your system spec, but there are other free tools you can get too.

CPUID displays full info about your CPU and basic info of your mobo, RAM, GPU etc. CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Speccy displays roughly all specs on your comp. Speccy - System Information - Free Download

    Both are free.

    Thank you again. It shows Dram freq. 665 mhz 9 - 9 - 9 - 24 - 1T
Max Bandwidth pc3-10700 667 mhz Does this mean it 1333?
It also says 4 slots total. People say here that it has only 2 slots total.
    Which one is true?

It's my understanding that the main board supports up to 4 slots, however there are only two usable slots on this laptop.

so what does a dram frequency of 200MHz mean.?

GPU-Z.0.4.4 comes with a nice feature for monitoring your GPU.
it shows you temps, core clock , memory clock, shader clock, fan speed memory used, GPU load...and more, its pretty cool.

has anyone used RivaTuner to overclock the 5730 ? i just got hold of this program recently and its really cool, easy to use, but i have only tested on my desktop, 8600GT. to what i understand it works on ATI cards too. but not sure if it works on mobile graphics cards.

Unfortunately i haven't studied the DRAM category. I only know somehow the speed always doubled on all mobo so you get the full RAM speed. Example 1333MHz IO speed is 667MHz double it and that's it. DDR2 667MHz, the IO is 333MHz etc. You'll get the idea. But why, that's where i need to study about it :p

I've known RivaTuner for quite a long time, was using it on my gaming desktop back in 2004. Haven't try it on N61 as i don't think i want to OC it any time this soon. I would only hope to push the 5730 performance up to 5770 and slight more and i'll be happy :D Hope PSU doesn't goes undervoltage.

i was just looking through Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 and i realized that they have tested games on the 5730, pretty cool, i month ago these tests were no done.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 gets 33-35 fps in high settings, i don't think overclocking will be necessary.
anyways i think its a bad idea to overclock a laptop, everything is confined in such a small case(HEAT!!). and i think it voids the warranty too. :(

Don't think Asus repair center would know if you OC it to flame. :D

And notebookcheck.com is where i met 5730 and N61 , i was gonna get Aspire with 5650. But i thought about going for top end Class 2 GPU so i decided to get this N61. Only hope this 5730 is 5770 atleast.

Btw BF:BC, nice i haven't got chance to get that game. :(

I only finds the OEM 640GB sluggish, was just browsing through USB external and opening a random folder lags like 1 to 2 seconds

:D lets hope so, i know i will OC the laptop in 2 years, once games begin to demand more from the gpu, although i have this feeling the i7 will hold out for a good while.

its been so long that i have forgotten how i stumbled across the N61, after all it might have be through notebookcheck.net.

oh you should get the game, really good environments, especially the ones in the grass fields, snow and dusty environments. anyways got to go now, have to watch house.m.d :)

I got alot people recommend me CoD4 atm so imma get that first. BF:BC is in my kill list anyway ;) And depend on the game, i can feel the cheap DDR3 is the bottleneck. And the core need abit boost as well. Sometimes i hope to have i5-540M N61JA then JQ, but several thoughts i glad to have i7 and wonder over again.. lol

I'm currently testing the N61 audio system. With and without Realtek driver. My find is that i love best without the driver and have Bass Boost Enhancement on Speaker Properties configuration. Best fit with this headphone i have. But the output power reduced by 60/70% if i do that. :(

With Realtek driver + SRS Premium CP. Took me abit while to figure out their EQ system, i managed to get the sound quality as close as possible without the driver. Loaded 2 more processes to RAM, and installed plenty of files etc to get full volume power. Good side and the bad side.. meh.

Imma test the internal speakers tomorrow when no ones around.

EDIT: It seems like SRS Premium CP can only obtain from Asus driver package. There's no way to be found over google.

We all feel for you Risco :( . This and the World cup, not a good month!
One thing I would recommend to anyone getting an RMA. Before you ship it off to ASUS check to see if you have a local authorized service center. I was lucky because we have one a few miles from my house in Seattle. This is much quicker and you can deal directly with a live person if problems arise.

Try it around 140FSB(bclk) and increase by 0.4 until it becomes unstable. If it is unstable at 140, go down by .2, but it should be stable around 140 for a starting point (I tested with gaming and 3dmark vantage/prime95). My max stable point is around 140.8.

Risco was doing alot on this. I had them on the first page but then he kept changing them. And other people were recommending different things. Some people were having problems using these profiles.Personaly I could not figure out how to get these profiles to work so I ended up pulling them off the first page since they seemed like such a subjective, personal preference type of thing.
Here is a link from what I think was Risco's final recommendation on this subject. http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...asus-n61jq-owners-lounge-403.html#post6227775
When we started this thread I think the thread search tool was not working. It is working now so if anyone is looking for pages to a subject like this you can use the thread search.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...asus-n61jq-owners-lounge-163.html#post5978442 you need to go to this page to get the file.

yeah, thanks, i went a page back from one of you links to get hold of the calibrated file by Risco. this is some really useful information.

EDIT: thanks Greg, http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...asus-n61jq-owners-lounge-403.html#post6227775, this is a very informative page, and yes indeed, our preference and perception of colour is very different, person to person. :)

Cool, let me know what he says too mike. I helped him develop it so I want to see what changed/went wrong. I am using latest bios 210, maybe that has something to do with it.

Anyone have the proper BIOS release note? The one at Asus site just state "Firmware Changes" that doesn't say enough.

Btw i read alot people brick their BIOS with 209, i wonder why no one use EasyFlash..

EDIT: Oh and the TurboBoost driver. It doesn't install. I thought it works on 64 and 32 bits?
