scias, I still love you Man. Let your thermal dork freak flag fly here anytime. :D It would not be a true Owners Lounge without some thermal dorks stressing about the temps.

Thanks but I adjusted the power setting on W7's power management panel today and.. F*** the GPU idle temp is now 57 Celsius and phew normal on CPU. I did it because i want the GPU to run on 350MHz Core speed on power saving mode for normal use.

Btw the way you talk seems like you getting high temperature, what's your temps on both chips?

EDIT: It seems like the fan is more active recently to cool it off completely. I must say the W7 Power Control ruined the perfect temp. It was fine last couple days ago. Temp range 55 to 58 easily with fan off. Fan speed 2.4k speed with normal usage.. damn, is ruined. Fan switch off at 55. Spotted CPU at 81 when running game.

And i finished the game Crysis on it :D my only comp that can handle that game with High settings and no AA ;)

Asus has cheated the world by not giving option for dual core i5 and Full HD screen in N53 model as they has mentioned in their world magazine. So there is no optimus option in N53 :(

nVidia Optimus required Integrated Graphics on CPU, the only i7 CPU that has integrated Graphics is i7-620M:

Intel® Core? i7-620M Processor (4M Cache, 2.66 GHz) with SPEC Code(s) SLBPD, SLBPE, SLBTQ

If you look at the specs the CPU has Intel HD Graphics and i7-720QM does not:

    Intel® Core? i7-720QM Processor (6M Cache, 1.60 GHz) with SPEC Code(s) SLBLY

Oh awesome mine comes with 640GB HDD but with US keyboard. It seems like there are plenty of unannounced models.

I was trying to get one without bluray drive so will be cheaper, but i couldn't find one.

Glad to know that I am always welcome here. I love this thread. oh yeah.

Right now after 10 minutes of usage (it was powered off), CPU is at 61C on the hottest core, GPU is at 58C. (Only running opera 10) But I expect these numbers to climb to 64C+ for both chips later. I have yet to run some CPU intensive apps.

When playing games, GPU peaks at 91C, CPU at 89C. Even though I don't want to, I limit myself from playing games with this laptop because of the temps. :(

It sounds like you're not getting the use you want out of your laptop. If I were you, I would just use it; play as long as you like and let the CPU/GPU fry. At least then you can invoke your warranty and get a replacement without heat issues. Otherwise, you have to prove to them that your laptop is getting abnormally hot, significantly so to warrant a fix.

I was playing Fallout 3, the temp stays around 62C GPU and 66C CPU much lower then playing Crysis. It can leads to 55C GPU and 53C CPU from a cold boot to desktop screen within couple mins. So your idle temp doesn't seems anything odd. That is as much both chips can generate when idling.

And btw i'm in an aircon controlled room so room temp should be around 24-26C. You should get your N61 to Asus authorized repair shop have it checked. Your temp is killing it. I had a Compaq Presario V6100 series with integrated GPU was at 82-87C lasted for about an year gaming with it. Repaired it and raised to 120C lasted for only 3 months and gone, i dumped it.

I think has something to do with the technology that builds the mobo and with good design. Quanta was a fail designed bugged mobos that was known. So i'm 'kind off' not too worrying about this N61 especially i heard Asus makes quality stuffs.

Hi, im new to the forum, and i got a tough question. I am gonna need a computer that will last me through college and through all my research I found the N61jq to be the perfect choice, for the i7, USB 3.0, and mostly price. Now, Asus is coming out with the N53jq, and i'm debating on whether to wait for it instead of the n61.

I have a 15.6" Compaq now, so i'm worried that the keys will be too small with the numeric pad included in the n53. Price is the same as the n61, so not much difference there. Ive heard the GPU of the N61 is better than the N53, but i don't do much gaming, although i do a lot of video editing and photo editing. I do plan on getting a blu-ray read drive in whichever one i get.

So, based on the previews for the N53, what are your opinions?

Helping Abo (creator of setFSB) develop and publish overclocking for our notebook. Should be finished soon. Great results so far, my 720qm performs at the same speeds of the 820qm, even slightly higher.

    Any success with underclocking/undervolting?

Also, anyone have any luck finding or extracting a mobility 5730 bios? Looking to mod the bios but can't get ahold of one.

There is always one rule to buying laptops and computers in general, if you can wait do wait. There is always something better around the corner. I would also say this, based on the specs for the n53 so far it isn't that much of an upgrade, maybe when we have some benchmarks I will change my opinion.

Thank's littleone! I can't wait to hear from the temp stressers after they have overclocked this thing. The temps will be so high who knows what might happen, smoking, melting, implosions, explosions, black holes,THE BIG BANG!

Just messing around with the thermal dorks :D. I know temps are a very serious subject, and I appreciate the owners here that are monitoring and reporting temp results on the N61. But maybe just turn off the monitoring for a week, crank this thing up and just enjoy it! Toys come with warrantys if you break them. If your warranty runs out you get to buy a new toy! :D

There's no relevant data to N53's nVidia 425M GT performance or spec, all we know is it comes with GDDR3 then N61's 5730 DDR3, so expect good bandwidth use for gaming. However with video editing is all about the GPU core performance. I would personally think 5730 is better and 'DirectCompute 5.0' feature is supported. nVidia Geforce model line with '25' at the end and 'GT' usually means entry to med range. And 'GTS' is med to med-high range and 'GTX' is the top hyper version.

The N61 has rather small keypad buttons and not really together, each key is about 0.4cm space away from each key. I also think video editing with larger screen would be easier. The N61 maybe suits your need.

Doesn't seem possible with Asus built chipset. Did it with nVidia chipset and thier tuning software. The N61 RAM scored lowest on Windows Experience Index of all hardware.

Ram is 5.9 and so is Hard Drive... Well for me anyway lol.

Nice forum, and a great laptop :D
Anyways, i was considering upgrading to 6GB Ram, i have 4GB 1066 in Dual channel at the moment... I know most of the stuff i need to know but i was wondering which would be better.. for performance of course..

4GB in Dual Channel, or 6GB In single..?

I'm only really wanting it for Ram heavy games, (Such as GTA IV) which is pushing 4 GB a bit and yeah... What would you guys recommend?

Also Thinking of getting the 2Gb more ram or a Intel 5100 ive only got wireless G at my place but other places i go are getting N and such.. And it will be there for when i get N... Cheap enough to buy and install but would i need it? Oh and is it faster at all on 2.4ghz networks? :p

    Thanks
    -Matt

Oh whaaaa?! Mine 4GB 1333MHz dual channels and scored 5.5 only! Maybe i need to re-run the assignments.

Anyway i play GTAIV, Crysis etc heavy games on this N61 but really 3GB is enough, i finds it running 32bits is much responsive and apps boot faster. I used to be 64bits hater, and i think i'm still one :D :D :D

    Awesome for the great work!

3GB is definitely enough for for games. Crysis barely up 2GB afterall was around 1.75GB. But go for 6GB if you like 64bits OS, you'll find that don't even need that much for this couple years on. ;)

For wifi card i never bother it much. Just b/g are common in most area, there never n around at where i've been. Guess many people don't bother getting n supported router.

The stock card comes with wireless 'n' support so no worries there. It just doesn't support 5ghz operation, which as far as I can tell only helps cut interference, no range or speed improvements.

    @2MNY
Everest Ultimate shows my card is Atheros AR9285 b/g only, googled it Overview did mentioned n is supported. I may need to use official driver then W7 oem's. ;) Thx for the info.

I would look for some performance DDR3 RAM modules around, but is not common that i don't even know if that exist on laptop RAM module. Mostly just value RAM modules. RAM, HDD, Internal and external PCIe Card can be install or upgrade ;) But don't think $50 bucks can do anything :D Get a cooler or gaming mouse perhaps.

Thanks! This definitely helps. I just looked at the N71jq, and i'm considering it cause its the same price, and I could always use a bigger screen :D

One thing that concerns me, is that I might have to be stuck with the stock thermal compound. If I have that little bit of $, then I'll get the IC diamond, but does it make a real big impact on the temps?

I personally want to get IC diamond on it too, but i just got the laptop less then a week and i don't want to ruin the 24 months warranty on GPU. I have no idea with Asus's stock thermal compound quality, but i think should last alright for maybe 6 months if using it everyday for 10 hrs. So i can't tell how cooler it will be.

But expect no temp drop with IC diamond while the comp is idling. The BIOS has set to run the fan if the GPU temp is above 56-57 (not sure about CPU). Only hope to expect lower temp while system is running on max. ;)

    Hi Turbogear,

I guess you are really excited with the marvellous win over Argentina, great game by the German team. Is shows that Maradona tactically does not understand football!

Holland also did a great come back, thanks also to Melo who proved that wherever he plays the rough and ugly player comes out :D !

    Your're welcome :D .

Argentina missed Cambiaso and Zanetti (not called by Maradona) and Milito who was not given the opportunity to play which is ridiculous seeing what he has won this past season.

Being a Chelsea supporter it's a pity that Ballack is injured but maybe that is a positive thing for the German team playing with alot of young "hungry" players.

    Don't drink too much beer celebrating :D :D !*!

Hello everyone, I am brand new to this forum. I just bought a N61JQ a couple days ago... I love it! But I am making a few small changes to it and would appreciate some help so I don't screw anything up :)

    - I am installing a 120gb Mushkin Callisto solid state hard drive in a caddy that'll replace the DVD drive, so I'm going to use it as my primary drive and use the stock 500gb drive for data.
My laptop didn't come with any DVDs or CDs though - I don't have a Windows 7 disc. I am running the AI Recovery burner right now.. but its going to take 4 DVDs!? Is this my only option, or is there a way to create just a Windows 7 disc without all the extra Asus utilities? I want to do a totally clean install if possible.

    - My system only came with 1066 memory, so I will probably upgrade at some point. Can this system fit 8gb of memory, in two 4gb modules?

    Thank you
    -Cody

You could "Obtain" Windows 7, and just use that. Make sure you get 64 Bit Ultimate though... and 1333mhz memory doesnt make all the difference till you want higher levels of performance but its not heaps..
The laptop has 4 ram slots which is a massive bonus, you can out four 2GB sticks in the laptop to save some serious moneys :D

Also i want to know if ill loose any performance if i upgrade to 6Gb ram? I know ill gain, but will making the ram run in single channel slow it down heaps? :p

EDIT: Going to get a PCMCIA TV tuner, its only standard, but its a Express Card 34 so it will fit in nicely, and ill play(and record) PS2 games and such off it cos its a tad too slow to emulate PS2 games...

Hi all, this is my first post =)

I recently purchased an N61JQ here in Australia (my other laptop was 6 yrs old and finally died) and I'm having trouble running a few games, namely Torchlight and Plants Vs Zombies (I've not tried any other games yet so am unsure if they are also problematic).

Everytime I run either game, the entire PC freezes. I've tried alt-tabbing, ctrl-alt-del, alt-esc, nothing works except for a hard switch off by holding the power button.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and version 8.692.1.0 of the Radeon 5730 graphics drivers. I've tried updating the radeon 5730 drivers both from the ATI website, and the Asus Support website, and neither drivers have solved the problem.

Has anyone come across this problem and have any solutions? Thanks in advance =)

I see this is a DirectX 8 game. Did you try running it in XP compatibility mode? Go to the program .exe file, right click, properties, and then change to "compability" tab, then check the box that says "run this program...." and try windows xp or different settings. also, check "run this program as administrator".

I checked the laptop bottom after gaming yesterday and guess what? Is only slight warm not even hot at all! My other 15'4 Dell shows much lower temp but the whole laptop gets very warm. And yeah you'll love it. But make sure you remove those bloatwares, OEM Windows 7 startup takes up to 77 processes! I did a clean install to 32bits W7 so around 30 processes. ;)

EDIT: LOL Left 4 Dead with my custom power saving mode doesn't even reach 59C

Are those old 32bits games? I know some poorly programed 32bits progs won't run on 64bits OS at all. My first game Crysis ran weird on that 64bits. I hate it so much i revert back to 32bits and now i'm all good for everything. :D

Did you try ATI Catalyst 10.6? Which bios version do you have? Have you thought about using the recovery partition? Try this thread for more driver updates http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html#post6388295

Someone help me out here. I thought we have 4 memory slots but only 2 are recognized or useable. I can't find where i saw that. Am I right or did I just imagine it?

Hi jestersdead, yes, I've tried running both programs in XP and Vista compatability modes, and I've also run the programs as administrator. Running the games still results in a black screen and a hard reset.

I'm not sure. Both games were released in 2009.

Hi Greg, I've also tried un-installing and re-installing ATI Catalyst 10.6 2 or 3 times, with no success.

When I first got the laptop I did a clean install using Kalim's walkthrough to get rid of the bloatware, so I'm reluctant to go back to the recovery partition =p

I'm currently running BIOS version 206:
    BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. N61Jq.206, 4/02/2010

Try rebooting win7 in safety mode, run plants vs. zombies, then go in your options uncheck "full screen" mode, reboot and run it again. see if that works.

It's a shame that ASUS hasn't applied a decent antiglare coating on this display. There is a huge difference in glare between my old glossy Sony display and this mirror. I have problems using my laptop close to the window or other light sources at maximum brightness settings and that is ridiculous!

I tried ViewGuard® Anti-Glare Matte Screen Protector ( http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5753). I was very disappointed by the result of this protector. The glare was gone, but the screen became very fuzzy / non-sharp. Because of the distance between the protector and the LCD, the fuzzyness is viewing angle dependant and therefor constantly changing when you move your head. If anyone nows a anti glare product that matches better with this laptop, I would like to hear from you!
