From Everest Ultimate, able to fetch data from driver and monitor system buses.

And regard the upcoming Sandy Bridge, anyone excited? Intel Sandy Bridge Comes Out Ahead of Schedule - May debut this year instead of 2011 - Softpedia

Checked on wiki the 2 Cores version TDP is around 20W compare to current 35W TDP. Peak TurboBoost will last longer and normal boost stay 20% high. Still using DDR3 1333MHz and i hope the CPU socket is the same. Too bad the 4 cores is still 45W TDP.

I'm sure some of you read it already but here it is again: Sandy Bridge (microarchitecture) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When I put my SSD in and I am going to boot from my usb boot win7 drive, do I need to just go to add new boot option and there will be an option for the usb drive? Right now (sorry the pic sucks, my phone is about to bite the dust), the two options are the hd and the ob.

The iPhone 4 is a great phone. I have been playing with my buddies phone and iOS4 and the iPhone 4 are finally making the changes that have been needed for a long time. I was really enjoying his phone. The display is absolutely beautiful.

That being said, I have an EVO4G and can talk to the iPhone4 using Fring. So, Risco, I am LordDavon on Fring. Let's get some video chat going!

I am gonna be ordering my n61 in a few days, and I have one question. I am definitely going to get blu-ray  and I would prefer slot loading. Replacing the optical drive yourself doesn't void the warranty does it?

And I was planning on getting the bc-5600s from sony/optiarch. This has a sata connection, and I was wondering if the N61 used the sata connection too. (My old lappy uses a different one, atapi I think, so I have to ask :D )

    Thanks again!

I just wanted to share something odd, and maybe someone who knows processors or Windows power management can chime in:

I have been setting the "Minimum Processor State" to 5% in my customized Win 7 Power Plan, so that the i7 can throttle down to the minimum multiplier at idle, thus saving power and generating less heat. In benchmark software (Fritz Chess Benchmark, 8 threads), there was a negligible difference in performance, with the 5% setting (as opposed to 100%) netting a very slightly and consistently lower score (< 1% lower).

Well I've been doing a little gaming (bsnes, a SNES console emulator) and noticed that the video had slight choppiness/hiccups in smooth-scrolling parts of games. I decided to try raising the minimum processor state to 100% (like High Performance mode in P4G), and, surprisingly, the video smoothed out!

I investigated further using the Kill-A-Watt, to see if locking the processor at 100% really consumed more power. Again, surprisingly, it does not. The laptop pulls 27 W idling, regardless of the minimum processor state setting (5% or 100%). While running bsnes, the power draw was also the same (~50 W) with both settings. HWMonitor also reports the same power draw for the processor (15 W) at idle, with both settings.

Even weirder: with min processor state set to 100%, TMonitor reports all 4 cores running at the minimum clock (~930 MHz).

So, at the moment, I am running both min and max at 100% for the performance boost.

^^Wow, that does sound quite odd.

It's very minor, but I thought I would post this just in case. I was using Chrome scrolling down the forum, and the mouse suddenly stopped. I could click with the button and use my keys, but nothing with the touchpad. AFter a few seconds it started switching back and forth between pages really quickly, and when i alt+tabbed it went into a new tab. I finally got out of the window but it wouldn't move so I wasn't really sure what to do. I tried pause break, and a couple other minor things but even after everything closed it wouldn't move. Restarting fixed it but, any idea what happened?

The N61JQ comes with bluray drive, but is not slot loading type. I do not think it voids the warranty however i'm not 100% sure. (Never reads my warranty) :D

And i do believe is SATA slot for the optical bay since people been using SSD HDD on that slot. Well, there's no point using SSD on that slot if the speed doesn't reach SATA right?

From a fresh installed W7 it has already set 5% min on power saving. And seems like the hardware is ignoring the software's command at some stage. Do not know what or why yet, but is a good find and i'll look into it. And for the video smoothing that one is quite odd.

Only way can happen like that is when the hardware "psy-out". Barely happen but still, sometimes could be interference signal, There's no proper way to run a diagnostic on your touchpad so can only hope is not going faulty that's all.

It happen once on my Dell laptop after using the touchpad for a whole day. Then it started to losing its mind moving itself sometimes and cursor doesn't go where i want it to go. Restart Windows doesn't help but to shut down and have it the laptop stayed offline abit without any power sources. It then fixed after an hour.

good to know thanks. if it keeps going bad luckily the store is just down the street lol. Any ideas as to why my computer would be relatively slow right out of the box? I only uninstalled the bloatware, deleted some files and defragged, but still seem uncommonly slow for a brand new system. If a re-image the best solution? because I don't have a copy of windows lol.

I never liked OEM Windows even uninstalled bloatwares still gives you processes from all over etc. Everytime when i got myself a new laptop i always have to look into the hardwares, find myself necessary drivers and to test out the hardware performance one by one, after all done i'll format HDD and install new windows. I only found my HDD seek speed is rather average and extreme slow respond rate to my request. And, going 32bits is my best choice.

But for you, i'm not quite understand your "relatively slow" term, if you could explain abit more that would narrow the thinking down ;)

It seems like set Minimum power state at 100% gave my Everest reading an unstable overclock 73%-74% at 2773MHz-2783MHz, sometimes as low as 61% overclock for a sec. However the CPU doesn't generate heat as it doesn't use to that much idling. There's no notable speed improvement on my side. I guess is no biggie.

Got the same reading from CPU-Z, and multiplier on max.

Software ask the hardware to perform on its max, hardware received acknowledgment and utilize the usage depending the need. I think windows power control may only required if the hardware doesn't know how to control power itself?

I think it was just the emulator being finicky. I tried it again a little while ago, and didn't notice really notice the stuttering with either setting. Also, i7 Turbo statistics (avg. and standard deviation of the multiplier) look the same with either setting while running the emulator.

It doesn't look like the minimum setting really does all that much; the max setting definitely works though.

After three weeks of wondering why some activities on my computer were soooo slow (e.g. 3-5 minutes for the add/remove programs window to fully load) I narrowed it down to the Trend Micro security program pre installed on the computer. If you have kept it, try disconnecting from the internet and disabling Trend Micro and see what happens. For me it was a magical transition! I have removed it and replaced it with Norton Internet Security. The computer is running fast now with updated drivers etc as suggested on this blog and its helpful "brother" Asus N61JQ Driver thread - but without any of the complex fiddling as reported by some contributors.

I realise that there are many alternative security solutions. I am familiar with NIS and it is working unobtrusively for me.

Any less technologically adventurous readers who have concerns about speed and have Trend Micro on their machine might try testing programs with it disabled.

    Heyy guys once again!
I am getting a Intel 5100, im just insterested if this one in particular would work?
As it says that it will only work on certain chipsets, which HM55 chipset (as i know my Asus N61Jq has) is not listed under the working list!?

Intel Wifi 5100 Half Size MiniPCI-e

    Can anyone confirm this?

    Regards

In my understanding the minimum power state is how low the processor allows it's clock to drop. If it's working correctly, a minimum state of 100% would keep the clock at 1.6ghz regardless of processor use.

Usage clock speed can drop down to 0%. But the hardware can only stay 930MHz as minimum. Think of usage and hardware suspensive.

I don't really see a reason why it will not work on N61. ;)

Is your lid of your laptop closed? If it is, then the laptop cools thru the keyboard, so that may be why.

If the lid is open and it is hot around there, then

    About Seagate Momentus XT

This HD have serious BSOD trouble with windows 7. This is the review from newegg :

Cons: Crashes Windows 7 with KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR.
That means the swap file was corrupted. Microsoft notes that the hard drive
is the problem. I replaced my original drive and no problems. This drive is
corrupting data. It crashes every day or two. I've repartitioned it and cloned
the original drive, nothing works. The swap file was 4GB. I changed it to 2GB
and it still gives the BSOD.

I remember reading how hybrid drives were going to replace SSD's within a year. I thought it was a pretty ridiculous statement and the hardware seems to back that up. Perhaps when windows 9 rolls out.

There are certain large capacity Seagate HDDs had issue with the Dell laptops as well. It required to flash Dell released firmware to HDD to able get it to work on Dell laptops. That was back in 2008. Not sure about now days.

But seems like most OEM HDDs are Western Digital brand.

Is it difficult to trust you because I just upgraded to BIOS 210 and I have the same issue. SetFSB show me 140Mhz but not CPU-Z... (stock FSB) and the setFSB author's write this about N61JQ :

Hmm..., I seem the clock generator is different from the working one.
I do not know the clock generator name. And, I do not have also the datasheet.
It is very difficult without the clock generator datasheet.
This clock generator might not have the function that changes FSB.
    Unfortunately, I cannot support it.

I will let you know if I get some sort of BSODs with this.

    So far I like.
The apps I use regularly open faster than with my older Seagate 320GB 7200rpm drive.

The boot times have also improved after a few reboots.
My PC used to spend longer time at the welcome screen after I type in my password than it does now.

Ya it does run, time for you to learn some hand-eye coordination and stop complaining [IMG] When you learn to trust someone, maybe you will become a little smarter. Also you can find the thread on the m15x forums 20 pages worth of them using our n61jq setting on setfsb to overclock their alienware system too. Get to work son, time to leave your crib. To Greg, Steve, LordD, turbo great to have members like you that don't cry on our forums like little children. Also, I think all the members on this thread are not comfortable with someone like you overclocking, probably end up with the brick you deserve a lot sooner than expected.

Be cool my friend, I told you I can NOT trust you because

    1) Abo, the creator itself said he can NOT support N61JQ :
Hmm..., I seem the clock generator is different from the working one.
I do not know the clock generator name. And, I do not have also the datasheet.
It is very difficult without the clock generator datasheet.
This clock generator might not have the function that changes FSB.

2)I have N61JQ and setFSB do NOT run with my system and 210 BIOS.. see the proof :

no problem, but people must know that there is a risk SetFSB do NOT run with all N61JQ, may be because we do not have same PLL on same model ??? Anyway, SetFSB is NOT free, you have to send 500JY before to activate it and use "setFSB" button...

Does anyone know if the card reader autoplays for you? I can see the reader, but windows does not autoplay and ask to import?

I am familiar and will agree that it may not work on all of the N61JQ's. I haven't tried it on my N61 but, I believe that littleone has it working on his. If he wants to PM me a link, I can test his version on mine.

If it doesn't work, I am more then happy to get in touch with the SetFSB people for you and check my PLL against the one he coded for.

There are always risks when overclocking your system but SetFSB (as it is a software overclock) means that you can test it out and if something doesn't work, a reboot clears things up. I have used SoftFSB in the past and believe that it is one of the better ones.

In any case, let's try to work together and get it working for all of the N61's, if we can. Risk or not, there will always be people that want to maximize the performance of their systems. Plus, I am one of those that may not overclock my system very often but, love to have the ability. ;-)

Just let me know if I can help.

When I pop a card in mine, it doesn't prompt for autoplay. I am not sure if I tweaked that option on it or not but I don't think I did. I was using mine for placing files for phone hacking but I mostly use it for ReadyBoost.

I am tempted on installing an alternative OS on it though... just for fun.

Also, I put my Macbook Pro on CL and have someone offering to trade me a 14" Sony Latop and a few hundred bucks for it. If I do the trade, I will have to work something else out for working on my Mac ports. I wonder if I can move my Ubuntu install to the SD card slot. Hmmmm....
