I will never again buy a laptop from ASUS. I sent in my laptop and it was delivered on July 1st. ASUS apparently didn't "get it in the facility" until July 8th. They keep telling me I have to wait 14 business days from the 8th to get my computer back. None of the online tracking tools are working. The tech reps have NO IDEA what the status is beyond "In Repair". I sent in my Dell Studio not too long ago and had it back in 3 working days. Hell, they even replaced it (with a newer model) because a repair would have taken too long on a different issue I had recently. ASUS' service SUCKS and their RMA process SUCKS. They tell you nothing about what's going on and apparently they have monkeys working at their Indiana facility. I will be selling my N61JQ right after I receive it from repair and I'm going to put the money towards a Dell Studio XPS 16.

I got the dreaded cpu whine again. I could deal with it, but Firefox updated and they run flash and all their plugins in a seperate process. Now I get a constant whine from the cpu all the time I am surfing. It is driving me nuts, all other browsers except IE use seperate processes so they all cause the same friggin issue.

I hate to say this, but she is going up for SALE.

Dammit Risco! We might have to drop one of Tonys dumb bells on it. Did you put cpu whine on your long RMA list when you sent it in?
I hate to say this but I hope it doesn't sell. We don't want to lose you here mate!

Did you send that it for your peeling? Has anyone else sent one in for peeling and had it fixed yet? maybe they are having a hard time figuring out what to do with that issue.

Is your whine similar to mine posted here? If so, there is a workaround (see the post).

Edit: I assume your sound is different from mine, since you were already aware of this noise here

I'm thinking of replacing the stock thermal compound. I'm stuck with AS5 because IC diamond isn't yet available here. I don't know what would be the temp difference if I replace since many folks here use IC diamond as replacement. Any comments on AS5?

Ironically the workaround was something I had hand in resolving originally. It is like a morse code, it is bloody annoying. I found a way to circumvent it, but it means disabling plugin crash protection on Firefox. It also means I cannot use any other browser because of the noise, nor can I use iTunes. Not acceptable, I have had too many issues with this notebook. She has to go.

AS5 is on my Dell laptop no problem. Doesn't dry out easily, yet performance is definitely better then cheapsake Thermaltake whitey paste.

The last time known with chipset whine gave me dead chipset after. I would say careless use with this laptop will cause death to it soon. If i'm not wrong, something in there is not stable causing whines, mostly capacitors etc.

I trusted on this N61 because of their rumored quality design and build. However i must add that their website is horribly optimized since 2003 the first time i visited their web. And so again rumored terrible repair service now frightens me. I would be glad if this N61 can run 12hrs every day to 24/7 for 3 years like this old Dell Inspirion w/ care. Then i would buy Asus again.

Oh that is out of thermal dork's discussion :D .. Was rather replying to Risco and other relate to "CPU whines".

EDIT: That also to refer to my Compaq Presario 6100 series. Chipset was heating around 82C to 89C. It died after 1 year of intensive use, next repair the chipset temp got even worst, it goes up to 120C max and throttle down GPU speed, bad for gaming, died 3 months later. And i always heard chipset whines.

But to answer your questions; I run games on it mostly, but not confident enough to use N61 like my Dell because N61's idling temp even removed bottom cover plus with 8inch fan is the temp that my Dell on full speed gaming. Lol

Mind you, my dell is using GMA X3100, so yeah it suck.

How does the whine sounds like? Is it very noticeable? I hear some noise on mine but i think it's coming from the hard disk.

Is just a low volume but very high pitch 'eeeeeeeeee' sound emitting from the hardware. I was able to identify where it came out on that Compaq, but sometimes is from chipset or CPU. Or maybe both. This Dell does that also, what i do with this Dell is that after use i take out Battery and AC power. And set it rest under aircon for 6+ hrs *when i off to bed*. Might sounds weird to you guys i know :D

It doesn't whines much now, if it does, just little to non. To be honest the main reason i took off the N61 cover and started use fan because i smell burning plastic and heard little whines from the middle, the fan ran so slow and the heat is so high starting to melt the vent plastic.

Seriously, the smell from the plastic is making me headache.

EDIT: Btw the 'eeeeeeee' sound varies, i heard quite a few different whines, but doesn't know what it indicates on to.

    EDIT: Almost burnt my finger touching an idling N61 heatpipe ;_;

I remember Donald (I think) stating that the Indiana service center is giving a lot of problems. I wonder if people wanting RMAs could request another center?

I'm crossing my fingers with my A1; so far it has worked pretty flawlessly, other than the morse code noise.

Her is a link to what Donald was saying. http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...asus-n61jq-owners-lounge-397.html#post6221159
Also check to see if they have an authorized service center in your area. I had one a few miles from my house and it is so much better than shipping it off and crossing your fingers, toes and holding your breath until it comes back. :D

Web site sucks, Bad repair service, horrible communication. While I agree with all this and wish it were not so, this is not why I bought this laptop. We are having some of our N61 owners having some serious issues with their N61s. Mine is not having any of these problems. I would still not trade mine in even with the negative reports as mine is running great. Now would I buy another ASUS in the future? The jury is still out on that one for me.
Now for the people whose N61 is running great but are getting a little nervous about these reports. We could use a few of you jumping in here to say how yours is running to help balance out the recent problem reports. This might help put the newbies at ease.
And to Risco, Sorry ASUS gave you such a lemon. Thanks for all the help and support you have given to this owners lounge. :notworthy:

my laptop is still in the hands of my cousin(500 miles away), so no personal experience yet, but he keeps calling me telling me how amazing it is... its the fastest laptop he has ever seen and such. and i would ask him if he hears any sounds, or if there are any BSODs, (some people here on the forum have reported it so...) anyways no BSOD and whine, i think i am rather happy with my choice. although i know that battery is going to be an issue, i need this thing for college. hope that helps, i must say that i am getting a little worried listening to all you guys. i have a question to all those troubled by the n61, what percent of the time do you use it for gaming, and do you think that gaming is somehow the root of most of the problems you encounter with the laptop.

    thanks,

i just got the n61 not even a week ago but im extremely happy with my purchase. i haven't exactly done much power using as of yet but i am glad to say that no problems have come up as of yet. the battery is a bit of an issue for me, it would be more convenient to be able to have it unplugged a bit longer but i can easily work around it. i suppose its what you sacrifice for stellar performance. hopefully they come out with an 8 cell battery or something?

If they receive enough requests for a 9 cell battery I'm sure they'll make one for it. Battery life is the only thing lacking in this amazing laptop and I'm willing to buy a bigger compatible battery because I know I'll have it for a while longer :)

Sorry to hear about your laptop Risco, I don't know in circumstances like those why they don't just give the person a new one.

Right now the N61JQ PLL is not yet listed and data sheet not yet published... apo itself, the setFSB creator's, confess this fact and the reason why he can NOT support the N61JQ at this time. I do NOT think there is different PLL on n61jq because I compare with some owner in this forum and we have the same PLL with laptop manufactured at different time. hmm, i am getting a bit of lag at startup and with some other things, im suspecting the HDD, i was looking around and saw a Seagate Momentus XT, 500GB... If it was the HDD holding me back (pretty sure it is), would the Momentus XT work... It doesnt support Sata 6... If it wont can anyone else recommend a high end drive or a Hybrid Drive.

    Thanks

Well I must say that I am at the moment VERY satisfied with my purchase. I've only had a faulty disk so far which was taken care of by the repair center within a week including the transportation time so 10/10 for them.

With around 40°C here in Italy I'm using it only for surfing and other light chores, I don't want to melt it playing games :D .

    So overall I recommend the N61JQ :) .

I have never had a single problem while gaming.(Have finished two games,AC II and POP:Forgotten Sands, and have tried COD:MW 2 and Bad Company II etc...). But, strangely, when I stopped gaming, (been busy, so didn't get time. Also this issue could be related to 10.6 MR Catalyst Driver install), my laptop gets stuck. If listening to a song with headphones on, it emits a rather annoying, sound.(But no sound in the speaker)

Offtopic: Saw some of your works, they look great, mate. :)

It is a good thing we are friends because I could call you so many other things so, watch it! HA! ;-)

Anyway, I didn't do the trade. It was a Sony + $300 and I really could have used the money this week. The Sony also had a BlueRay drive that I was going to pop in the N61 and then sell the Sony off. The issue was that the guy told me the Sony was brand new and then started telling me that he was going to have to re-image it before trading. I also had a hard time finding his model for sale since it was discontinued already.

    Hey guys,
Just to check out with you,how do i know what's my default bios version, and if its still possible tol retain my warranty if im able to flash back to my default bios version? My current version is 210 which is the newest, apparently m just worried that im voiding my warranty just by flashing the bios. :(

Thats good to hear davon, thanks!

Anyway,do u guys experience spike lags when in games? Mine is a typical mmorpg game, but the problem is when im using my friends laptop, whose specs are obviously lower than mine cause its bought 3 years ago, with ati radeon 2xxx series, running on windows vista,i dont feel any spikyness at all. Though i've adjusted the settings to the same as his.

So,do any of u know if its the wifi card problem, graphic card or due to windows version problem or any other problems?

Whatever you call me won't change the friends. Almost everthing I own besides this N61 has the Sony name on it. I think you mentioned a few sony toys in your possesion. You must have been one of us who were taking a hard look at the Sony F series before we stumbled on to the N61. Even though I bought one of the origional Macs I stubornly root against Apple for the selfish reason of Microsoft and their effect on the Seattle economy.
So I say trade that silly little apple thing for that Sony powerd by a brilliant Microsoft OS. And if you can't find that sony model than Bing it! If we are not carefull we will end up with 3 companies running the world, Apple,Google and Wallmart. The world would be in much better hands if we just had one company running it...........MICROSOFT!!! :D :D :D

You guys should disable core parking, helps a lot with spikes in various apps and improves cpu performance very slightly. There is a thread on this on NBR somewhere.

I am sorry to hear about your problems with ASUS repair site. I actually had good luck with them. The phone services wasn't the greatest, but I did receive my RMA number on my first call. Took about 8 days to ship, fix and return. 3 Days total at the Indiana facilities. I bricked my machine doing a BIOS update. (My fault). Laptop has been working fine since. No CPU whining ....

It is too bad that poor service will cause you to drop the brand. One day they may learn that quality goes beyond just the product.

I think mine whines too. But I could hear it if I place my ear very close to the left part of the keyboard. Is the whining you guys talking about audible even without listening closely to that portion of the keyboard?

About the whining can be heard easily from certain angle. Have your face close up on the keyboard, turn your head left and right . Don't think you can hear it until for a certain time.

I always experience spike lags in GTAIV, not sure if that's CPU or GPU DDR bottleneck. But i don't see GTAIV run as multithreads as they said. Tried to use low texture gave the same lag. Which i think is the damn CPU's fault.

Even with HyperThreading, i never see the CPU on 90%.

I was having a problem playing DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) where frame rates would spike and then slow and then spike again. This is not a demanding game (not too demanding for the n61jq, that is) and, needless to say, I was pissed. After checking out this core parking thing, I found that it was all too similar to the problems I was having with this game. I used this link, Windows 7 & Core Parking .... a *better* way to Turn It OFF ...., and my problems are gone. I haven't fully tested what it may do to long-term processor or battery performance, but since it appears you may be turning off a power-saving feature, it may decrease battery life. Now, when i put my computer in battery saver, it still tells me I can get the same 2:45 minutes I've been getting, so who knows. But for now, it seems to be a pretty neat trick.

See if the game has framerate limiter or V-Sync option in graphic. Those 2 suppose to cap the framerate.

Adjust the setting at Speaker Properties in CP. Go Enhancement tab and check around, and also Realtek audio manager and SRS CP.

If thing don't go well try fully uninstall and reinstall audio driver pack.
