Hi guys I'm back from a nice relaxing holiday and I've just caught up with the posts.
Good to see Tony and Risco are still with the N61JQ.
Good thread Turbogear with the details on your mod for the backlit keyboard, wow I'm really envious, how about if I send you mine and you do it for free. Just kidding I must have caught the LordDavon's "free" virus
.
By the way LordDavon great looking puppy, I'm sure it will protect your daughter from any dates better than you could do.
Hey mike2010, I've been using the 9.1.0.100 WiFi drivers for a while and I'm also really satisfied.
Adamal glad you got your laptop back, did they by chance update your bios because when mine came back they had updated it from 208 to 209 which I discoverd by chance because it was not mentioned on their report.
2MNY sorry to hearabout it being stolen I hope the insurance covers it, best of luck.
pellpel sorry to hear that, send them a large lemon together with the laptop hopefully they'll get the message.

Yup I only get 150mbps, this is the maximum the laptop can take unless you fancy buying a new antenna and rewiring it round the lcd. This is the official word from Asus.
-
Welcome to the forum fellow Brit
.
If you hadn't already read the first page and stevedogg's drivers' page
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-reviews-owners-lounges/494250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html#post6388295
I personally advise to eliminate all the software that you don't need, do all the software and driver updates after which do a backup of the OS through an image program like Macrium Reflect Free.
Have fun!
-
But does this mean we would have to install a new wifi card that has three antenna holes?? -
@fabsblu
Thanks for the drivers link, saved it in a txt doc. Also in a few reviews I noticed people said there was too much software when they first got it. So I might just format it. Other then that, seems like I'm ready to buy! Just wait until Christmas sales to buy my new RAM and SSD! -

Be aware that it won't come with an OS disk from ASUS, and if you use their A1Recovery to create your own disks it will include all the utilities and bloatware so you will be right back where you started.
Some resellers, including PowerNotebooks.com, offer the ASUS OS Recovery Disk for $15 which will give you a clean Windows 7 install. Then you can install the drivers and only the utilities you want from the separate drivers disk.
Also, check out the new ASUS N61JQ- B1 version. It has the Intel® i7-740QM processor instead of the Intel® i7-720QM and DDR3/1333 memory. There is also a B2 version that adds the Blu-ray reader, but you can just upgrade the B1 to the Blu-ray reader if you want that, and it is a little cheaper that way. -
You would not need a third antenna, but it would need a MIMO 2x2 antenna, which fits round the rim of the LCD.
-
Sadly no UK version of the B1 edition
Thanks for input
-
If I trust the (no) comments about the new lucky BIOS 212 updater, there is nothing new under the sun from asushame - no log change, and suspiscious move from 210 to 212 (may be for jumping from 212 to 214 without 213...) ??? The mystery remains...
-
Hi paladin, where would I find that recovery cd you mention on that site? I've been looking for the last 10 minutes and haven't found it yet. I just picked up an N61 yesterday and am on DVD-R number 2 of the backup disc-burning process. I'd prefer having a bloatware-free version of the recovery disc(s) like you referenced above.
I've been a long time XP user so this whole Windows 7 thing is new to me.
Thanks in advance! -
Of all the bugs to catch, that one is always preferred. ;-)

It is on the Customizer for all or our ASUS models. We don't sell it as an accessory, it is only available to our customers. -
Whats going on guys! I just got in from offshore and for the last three days I re did my command center room :0...repainted walls / trim and put together all the new furniture. Just need some good computer speakers and a nice modern couch! I went for the modern / minimalist look!!!

Yahoooo! That looks great
-
That sucks! LOL. OK, well thanks anyhow, I appreciate the reply. I've burned the 5 DVD-Rs worth of data for my recovery discs and until I'm more familiar with Windows 7 (this is my first time using 7), I'll have to take my time and get the drivers and OS manually. Although, I'm seeing a few sellers on eBay selling Asus Drivers recovery discs for a couple bucks. I'll have to research to see if buying one of those may be worth it.
Cheers! -
Very nice/clean set up!
-
Thanks Donald...how you been doing bro!!!
-
thanks
!

Doing great...incredibly busy summer about which we have no complaints
-
That is great news bro...hopefully you can take a vacation this fall ?
-
Ok, so I updated to latest webcam drivers and now everytime I use it it shows an upside down image. Tried every option on Skype and Messenger and there is no way to flip it vertically (or did I miss it somewhere).
Also, updated to the newest BIOS 212, now it seems to run hotter than before.
Any thoughts? -
Wow I'm more confused because we already have two antennas, which I assume that they are not of the MIMO 2x2 type?
-
Wow real cool
-
hmm i updated mine and it seems about the same to me?
-
Welcome back fabsblu.
I hope you enjoyed your vacation.
The backlight works very nicely.
Yes, it seems the the "free" virus infected you too.
In any case if you want to implement such a solution and need something to be cleared out, you know you can always ask me.
Maybe I should start a business of making such circuits and selling them on eBay. I am just kidding. -
Hey guys, I'm very interested in buying this:
ASUS - N61JQ-JX021V - N61JQ NOTEBOOK - Bing Lee
(although cheaper)
Does the N61JQ-JX021V support room for 8gb of ram and 2 hard drives? Thanks -
The laptop supports a maximum up to 8gb of RAM (~1333mhz). As for the hard drive, you should contact the retailer and query them about it.
Hope that helps. -
Thanks, well the 8gb ram is the bigger concern anyway so cheers.
That's all I needed to hear, hopefully tommorow i'll be buying it
-
The 8GB ram will work, but there are only two memory slots.
So if you want to upgrade in the future you have to buy 2x4GB modules. -
What is the make and model of the wireless card in this machine? Will it operate in the 5 Ghz band?
If not, I would like to replace it with a Centrino Ultimate-N 6300, is there room in there for a three antennae card? -
I believe it comes stock with an Atheros AR9285 card, which does NOT support 5 GHz. Any half-height mini-PCIE card will fit, but there are only two antennas in the screen (two wires, black and grey, which clip onto the wireless card), so a 3-antenna card should not be used.
-
Does anyone know if it supports ram above 1333mhz?
Also does the zalman nc2000 sit under this laptop without the laptop being to big. -
don't believe you get notebook RAM higher then 1333mhz afaik
-
Ah, okay.
thank you!
Know anything about the zalman cooler? -
not exactly a n61 question, but does anyone know how to get vlc to display an image from the video file rather than just the traffic cone? (talking about the icon when you view your movies in windows explorer)
-
I think you can right click on the file, select Open With and then Choose Default Program. Then select VLC. This works with most apps.
-
I update the webcam driver at one point and had the same problem. Couldn't fixit at all so I just went back to original drivers and it's fine now. I believe that the camera hardware is mounted upside down but the driver is supposedto correct it automatically.
BTW, I went to update drivers from Stevedog's driver page and my system went crazy. I might have gotten some malware on one of those sites. Please websurf carefully out there! I had to do a clean reinstall with a Win7 disk as even the recovery partition was lost. -
The NC2000 is bigger than this laptop; the laptop will sit on it with space all around. That said, it's a waste of money for this laptop. I have one, and it only drops temps by 1-2 degrees.
-
Do you remember which link you clicked last before the catastrophe? I tried to put links to direct downloads there, because Station Drivers--a good source for new drivers--does tend to have a lot of popups. I have never found malware or a virus in any of my regular use of their site (using Avast anti-virus).
-
Incorrect or improper drivers can cause symptoms similar to malware. I used most of those links a week ago with no issues. I scan everything that comes in, plus I always do a check on program startups after installing anything, that's usually where you'll find most.
-
I'm using all those drivers too
. Except the wireless one, since I swapped my card.
-
Yes thanks, a very relaxing vacation in the hills of Liguria here in Italy, at my uncle's with free fruit picked off directly from the trees and fresh vegetables from the ground.
Many thanks, but if I try I'll do like LordDavon and wait for the guarantee to expire and then ask a friend of mine who's an electrician to help me out.
-
I've also had no problems whatsoever with your direct links, great job.
stevedogg is this by chance a new audio driver Version V6.0.1.6151 ?
ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- -
I had the same issue with every webcam driver I used under 3 operating systems, it was a pain to say the least. I hope by some stroke of luck my replacement doesn't have the same issue.
-
There is only room for 1 hard drive in the case. If you want a 2nd hard drive you will need to use a drive caddy that takes the place of the disk drive.
-
Not for us. The way I check is by looking in the archive for an SRS folder.
-
Gary, video icons are provided by Haali Media Splitter, a piece of software used in decoding video formats. VLC uses internal decoders that are only available while VLC is running so there is no way it could reliably provide Windows Explorer with video icons.
You can install Haali on it's own or as part of the CCCP video player package (like the kazaa lite package but better). -
Yup, besides the upside down image, the new driver seemed to have cured the long lag time, as well as having a better image.
-
Just ordered a AR9287 Atheros Wifi card. Hoping it better than the Intel one I bought. I thought it would be best to keep to atheros as it is the same make in my laptop when I bought it.
-
For me it might very well have been a bad driver install. The computer started to go nuts when I was installing the network card driver..... Of the newer drivers, only the Catalyst video driver worked for me, I had to revert to older drivers for everything else.
