    That sucks ! :mad2:
Since you joined us on page # 134 you have been a valued contributor here. You are in the top 10 of posts in this lounge and as such are listed as a major contributor on the first page. :notworthy:
I see what David is getting at given the speed of change in laptops and the increased options you have now. Maybe we can have some fun in the lounge with some input on your replacement. My hope is you recover your laptop.
My vote for your replacement is the Asus N61JQ :D, so we don't lose you here bro! Keep us updated.

I will be sending my N61JQ for the 3rd time with the same problem. Any of you know if there's a "lemon law" for Asus's laptops?

2MNY: Sorry to hear about the laptop. I'm using mine at work and am always worried about someone taking it. Hope you get the same or better as a replacement :(

pellpel: I wonder if you could request a replacement due to your situation. Normally, the warranty does not cover replacement (only repair), but it seems yours has a problem that new motherboards, etc. are not fixing. You might need an entirely new laptop if they can't find the component causing problems in yours :(

I had a discussion about this one time with ASUS support.
I was told that when ASUS is not able to fix the problem and the ASUS has done 3 repairs then the customer is eligible to get refund or a new machine.

Let's hope it works out with the replacement. Please let us know.

New Bios v212 available on asus ftp :D ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/nb/N61J/N61JqAS212.zip

LOL interesting, after flashing this there is a RED LED light on in my headphone jack.

Edit: very interesting after rebooting the red light is gone, wondering what triggered it, it looks cool.

I have had the red light thing before; I think the sound card gets confused as to whether there's a headphone plugged in or not. Thanks for the post; I'm gonna try the BIOS :D

Edit: Blast! Server is down atm

There is no lemon law, but I have escalated your issue to ASUS management for resolution.

They report they want to issue a new RMA and bring it back to their headquarters to evaluate...and do a FINAL fix for you. Expect their emails shortly. When you send it in be sure to include your AC Adapter and battery.

Edit: Just flashed successfully. I think I'll hold off posting it to the driver thread until it appears on the official ASUS page.

Could be spurious, but my max temp is 4 degrees cooler after 5 rounds of Intel Burn Test (was 86 when I tested it long ago; now 82).

    It is working fine. :)
Compared to the stock Seagate 7200rpm, the applications that I use regularly launch faster.
The Windows boot times are also faster, but not by much. The N71JQ boot time were from the beginning quite good.

But there decent improvement from the stage after the Win7 Welcome screen to the point where I am logged in and all my startup applications are loaded. I have many applications that launch at start up and they have benefited from the new drive. They launch faster than without the XT drive.

The funny thing is that with my N71JQ it is now faster to do a cold boot than resuming from hybernation.

I guess if I want the hybernation process to become faster, I may have to do it more often so that the XT drive adapts to it.

About Momentus XT drive I agree with Turbogear but there is no very significant difference with n61jq stock drive.. frankly there is no good reason to buy this drive except if you do some memory move like USB3 transfer - I have 50% faster transfer rate between this XT drive and an other seagate 7200 (not XT)...

It depends on the applications that you use. Some see more speed improvement than the others.
For example in the last weeks I was working with Matlab couple of time per day, launching it with my normal Seagate 7200rpm drive was very slow, especially when starting Simulink. With XT drive it lauches almost instantly.

See my post about temps. If you decide to flash, could you try before/after temp readings (e.g. Intel Burn Test or Prime95)?

Strange, mines all slow and choppy with everything.
Do you know what could be causing this, and maybe a fix?

The headphone jack doubles as a HD SPDIF audio connection. The light is a LED for transferring audio signals through a fiber-optic cable. This is a design feature present in many laptops.

What program are you using to view the web cam? I never did anything special other than upgrade to the latest driver. I have noticed in low light conditions it's a little choppier.

Lifecam, windows live messenger and skype.
So pretty much everything i use, its got like a 2 second lag behind all my movements, i updated to the latest drivers and it went upside down, and didnt improve the fps.

    Driver provider: Sonix
    Driver date: 12/11/2009
    Driver version: 5.8.54000.1

    This is the hardware ID
    USB\VID_13D3&PID_5122&REV_0202&MI_00
    USB\VID_13D3&PID_5122&MI_00

Got any idea what will help? :(

You might try a manual uninstall by going into device manager, finding the webcam in Imaging Devices, right-clicking and choosing Uninstall, and checking the box to delete driver files. Then reboot and install V5.8.54000.207.

I loaded life frame and there is always a slight delay, but it is less than or equal to about 1 second. Not much different than any other web cam I've ever had. You might want to try updating your driver to the one in the N61JQ driver thread.

    Hi there,

    just got my N61 today.

Like many others I have noticed the keyboard flexing. While typing however, it doesn't bother me that much. My main question is if this flexing is bad for internal components / the keyboard itself. Or has this flexing been taken into account?

I have noticed that the back of the top lid (= back of the screen) flexes quite a lot aswell. Should this concern me? Or is this a common flaw? (My brother's HP lid flexes a bit less, and the keyboard doesn't flex at all)

The flexing is common on laptops and there is no concern for it damaging anything internal.

As long as you are careful with opening your LCD from the center instead of jerking it open from the side that too will be fine.

I haven't had a chance to read all 6000+ posts in this thread but am supposed to buy one of these this afternoon. I hope I'm making the right choice as this is quite a bit to spend on a PC. (I did pay $2000 for a 2nd had Toshiba Tecra back in the mid 90s but have gone with cheaper machines since then.
Short of reading this entire thread, is there somewhere that one can find the steps to take to get this laptop up and running at peak performance (removing bloatware, updating drivers, etc)? Or do we need to read the full thread? Just asking cuz I know I'll be anxious to get up and running as soon as I get this thing home!

Risco, I've got the same router as you. I get 150mbps. Is that what you are getting after your restore? I really like this router and the stock wireless card on the N61 has been very reliable. But I have always wondered if upgrading the wirless card would speed things up by better utilizing this router.

I've been using the stock wireless card and a generic wireless N router (Kuzomi) for our file sharing for this film, between a 100mbit ethernet connected desktop to this wireless N laptop, transfer speed is 3 MB a sec, not the best but working good for what we want.

Can any of the resellers give us an insight into the Bios change to 212?

You might try using a different channel on the router. I have an ASUS WL-520GU (54 Mbps G router) running DD-WRT, and I saw an increase from ~1.5 MB/s to 2.5 MB/s just by changing from channel 6 to channel 1. Channel 6 is the default for DD-WRT firmware and probably for a lot of factory firmwares, so it can get congested in, e.g., an apartment setting. You should be able to do better than 3 MB/s with an N connection. 3 MB/s is fine for a single 1080p video, but if you're streaming multiple things at once, you'll need more.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this. I have a USB problem. I have to uninstall USB then reinstall after every boot. Disable and re-enable works too. Says a related driver was not loaded. Anybody seen this or know a solution?

Should have added that it works if I uninstall and rescan, but when I reboot the USB is gone again.

It's an N61JQ standard US version

    Thanks.

Hi all, new to these forums so go easy!

So I'm starting college soon and its dawned over me that a laptop will come in handy. I've been searching the internet and have come across the ASUS N61JQ and well, it's perfect! Only thing being is that as I'm from the UK, I cant buy that specific model, but I can buy the UK alternative, the ASUS X64JQ-JX016V.

I am pretty tech savy, so in time I shall upgrade the ram to 8GB (2x4GB 1333mhz) and also add an SSD, since the UK version has 2 HD bays. Other then that, since this is the N61JQ owners lound, is there anything I should know? Any advice, recommendation or tips etc?

Thanks for reading, appreciate any tips! :)
