Second try on this. Really hoping someone can help. It's a real pain to do this every time I reboot.

Another possibly related symptom is the devices show chip-set driver #1020 despite that I have installed #1025. When I try to update a driver I get a message that the best driver is already installed.

    Thanks,
    Dan

Newest chipset driver is 9.1.2.1008 here. Check the driver thread for USB firmware and driver updates; it might help.

I don't seem to be able to update any drivers. Maybe I'm doing something basically wrong. I have a win7_64 system, but the drivers seem to all be in the windows/system32 folder. Is that right?

all the drivers seem to be old, yet when I try to update them I get a message saying the best driver is already loaded.

I updated bios to 212, but it seemed to make no difference.

    Thanks,
    Dan

Just installed Ubuntu 64-bit over my 32-bit installation that was flaky.

So far so good, it's booted three times with no problem. It took two tries though, the first time I didn't format the partition, and had an external monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged in. It installed fine, but wouldn't boot. So I re-installed, with nothing plugged in, formatted the partition, and created 4GB of swap space, and it's working great so far.

I'm not sure how the System32 folder works in 64-bit Windows, but I'm pretty sure the 64-bit drivers are located in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. Installing the chipset driver should be as simple as running the file I linked ( intel_inf_9.1.2.1008(www.station-drivers.com).exe) to unzip it, then running Setup.exe. You can check your chipset driver version using this guide. For the USB 3.0 drivers, you should just unzip the file (USB3_NEC_WIN7_64_z2040.zip, from this link: V2.0.4.0_V3.0.2.5) and run RENESAS-USB3-Host-Driver-2040-setup.exe.

Edit: I think I had it backwards; 64-bit DLLs are located in the System32 folder, while 32-bit are in SysWOW64.

OK, I have a partial resolution. The USB/boot issue was caused by a conflict with Nti Ninja security program. I uninstalled Ninja, and the boot problem went away. The offending file is NtiEnc.sys and was located in SysWOW64. I found this by looking through the events log.

I still don't understand my driver update problem or the relationship between system32 and syswow64.

I was able to confirm the correct chipset software in the registry per your link.

Thanks for your help, and thanks for the driver update thread!!

    Hi All

Does anyone know how to remove the two black bars you get on a monitor that's connected to a notebook. I know its something to do with scaling, but I cant find anything in the ATI CCC :(

    Monitor: Dell 20" Widescreen

    Thanks in advance!

Strange; it could be your monitor. Did you make sure to click the one that looks like a monitor (not the laptop screen)? There should be two displays configurable in CCC: the laptop and the external.

Have you set the resolution on the external to the native res? Also, are the black bars actual limits of the screen, or is it only the wallpaper that is not filling the screen?

Make sure you click the small monitor icon at the bottom, not the big one. The small one has a configure option not available above. Go to configure. For mine I say yes to GPU and no to ITC scaling, then on the scaling tab set the underscan to zero. Hope yours works as well.

Under windows "Screen Resolution" settings (right click on desktop to see) find the dropdown menu that says "Multiple Displays". Set it to "Extend these Displays". Now set your external monitor to it's native resolution, probably the highest resolution available.

If you are instead talking about the black border around your desktop wallpaper, you can try changing the wallpaper settings or look for a 3rd party program. It's never bothered me so I haven't looked for a fix.

What I did was scale my wallpaper to the native res of the external, and choose not to stretch. That way, the laptop screen gets cropped, but there are no black borders.

    Hi all

with regards to my monitor problem, I solved it by setting my monitor as the only output, thus turning of my laptop screen.

Other then that, does anyone play TF2 on this laptop? if so how is it?

Thanks for the help too x

TF2 plays very well on this laptop. You should be able to crank all the video settings to their highest values without issues.

    hey guys,

i just got my n61jq after a week of anticipation and in desperate need of a laptop, installed a lot of my stuff, and im going crazy here, worked on it for about 5 hours getting it down from 81 processes running at purchase to around 50ish.
im afraid my HD may be screwed - i ran everest ultimate on it and it seems ok, but i cant copy files from a CD over to my HD - and most of my install files are corrupt - i even download spywareblaster on another laptop i have around here and copied it over to my computer and it said the install was corrupt!
im screwed up without a graphics driver now because i uninstalled the default one and downloaded the latest 18.1 from ati but it says its corrupt too.
    HELP PLEASE!!!

edit: heres an example btw http://i52.tinypic.com/21dfwaa.png

Hey everyone just purchased a N61JQ-A1 from here:

    ASUS N61Jq-A1 Notebook - Core i7 i7-720QM 1.60 GHz - 16" 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM - 500 GB HDD - DVD-Writer - Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi - Windows 7 Home Premium x64

seemed like a damn good price, did some research online before buying it and it seemed to be very well speced especially at that price.

Its arrived and its a very fast laptop however as with whats been said in the forum so far it seems to be running a load of process's from first boot up, around 80 if I remember correctly, Windows XP usuaully runs 30 but having not messed around with windows 7 im not sure what is a normal amount.

I can see everyone says format to get rid of all the bloatware which is deff something I want to do especially as someone has posted a direct copy of windows I know for sure it will be spyware free. only thing that concerns me is getting everything working as it currently is, or does every single thing needed come on the asus backup disc?

I just want the laptop without all the extra stuff that comes bundled with it, I do like the extra features though such as the funky mouse pad and a couple of other things.

Would you suggest just uninstalling all the stuff I dont need or just go straight for a format, I was again surprised to find like 80-90 gigs of the harddrive already occupied before I have installed a single application.

One other thing if I were to get it down to say 50-60 process's im assuming it would give you slightly more battery life is that correct?

I wanted to buy this right when it went out, but i built a desktop and pretty much forgot about this one. But now im back on the market for a laptop again, im just wondering if i missed anything new.

meh i really would appreciate some help on my post from the last page it just disappeared here.
davcohen - regarding your question - what i did was uninstall and im down to 54 processes now.. thing is my laptop is giving me some problems and im considering formatting too - i honestly dont see the point of formatting right out of the box, it probably takes more time than uninstalling the bloatware like i did in any case...
anyway.. im so frustrated guys if you could please help me out i would truly appreciate it - i am thinking of formatting but that might not do any good if theres a simple solution, maybe some software IRQ conflict or something? i just honestly hope its not the HD, thats why i dont like laptops so much because everything is so fragile and you cant replace stuff by yourself..

Just in case anyone is wondering how to get back the recovery partition if you upgrade the hdd. I used the AI burner before I sent away my laptop to burn a copy of the hidden partition. When it was sent back, they had reinstalled but missing the default apps. So I wiped my HDD with the disks I used for the recovery burned and it restored the laptop to as new condition! So I will assume this will work for any hdd upgrades as well. Be warned it wipes both partitions when doing this, so backup first!

    KoMoDo:

While some of the bloat-ware is annoying, some of it seems pretty useful (bttray for instance) If you're having problems with the machine, I'd do a recover from the recovery partition (F9 at boot) then go ahead and uninstall the bloat-ware you don't want. See the first page of this thread for a list of bloat-ware and it's functions.

I suppose you could also use the windows restore utility (control panel->system->restore->recover) to get to a point before these problems were happening. That is worth a quick try before formatting/restore partition.

It was initially annoying for me to have Win7 take up so much memory on boot, I could get XP down to less than 100MB on a clean new system. But our machines have so much memory, and Win7 prefetches applications for better performance, I've given up trying to micromanage the startup processes, and just focused on using the computer :) Unless you're doing some really intense stuff, I don't think you'll notice the difference of a few extra processes. The amount of RAM they take up is probably minimal if you're using more than 4GB on a regular basis, you're better off upgrading your RAM than trying to pare down a few piddly processes.

Oh, and changing out most of the changeable parts on this machine is easy, I'd rather work on this than the desktops I've been working on lately.

    Good luck!

I got a BSoD whilst loading a youtube video:

This was likely caused by the following module: unknown_image
    Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFFA80047724E0, 0xFFFFF880042F5C98, 0x0, 0x2)
    Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR

It's to do with the video card it seems, are there newer drivers?

Yep, tried to watch another video on youtube, screen went blank for a sec and then it said "Windows successfully recovered amd display driver" or something.

What is the latest driver and if I'm on the latest driver already, what should I do?

You should not be getting BSOD on youtube, I would suggest reinstalling your graphics card drivers and update your flash to the latest version.

Can anyone help me? I typically hookup my mulimedia keyboard and mousewhen using laptop on desk. But if I use the laptop elsewhere the keybaord makes me nuts. I could be typing and all of a sudden the type will jump up in the middle of a sentence several rows up. I can not figure this out. Any ideas?????

    I have ASUS N61jv I-5 4G Ram 7200hdd got end of March2010 from amazon.

Worst of all I try to do any updates from ASUS website and cannot open files. I get some java error.

This is a common issue with all touchpads on laptops. However Elantech have just released a new touchpad driver to combat this very thing. It is called smartarea at the very bottom of the touchpad settings ( scroll down )

    You can get it below.

I experienced this issue with 10.6 and 10.7 Catalyst drivers. 10.8 seemed to fix it. In lieu of updating drivers, you can fix it by disabling hardware acceleration in Flash (right click your Youtube video and choose Settings).
