    Ouch - Scored 1
    Yesh - Scored 0

Roughly 2 hrs then i'll need to decide what to do. The BIOS changelog that mike posted is surely confusing.

This BIOS Change Log are authentic, they come from asus support guy and like you I do not trust them about what they did really... so in my case, I will stay with 210 because I'm satisfied. If you upgrade it, please give us your feedback here.

Yes, the main thing I noticed is a more active fan. It will ramp up more often in order to keep the processor cooler.

I finally updated from 209 to 212. I used my N61 all weekend and it ran fine. No BSOD's, no problems, no nothing funny. I also installed the 10.8 drivers from AMD on Friday, the same night I updated the BIOS. Everything seems to be running smoothly. Even in Ubuntu, things were fine.

I usually only use it on the weekends so, albeit heavily. It will be a little bit before I report an issue if I have one.

Yes I concur. My 5 runs of Intel Burn Test peaked about 4 degrees cooler ( post).

Disable Aero in Win 7 and it should drop down a bit.

Any new versions of the N61JQ coming out soon? Thinking about picking this one up, but don't really know if anything better is out/or will be released soon...

Is there anyway to make the media control buttons (play pause button, Fn + up, down, left, right buttons aswell) compatible with itunes? They seem to control WMC and WMP just fine, but no go with iTunes. Cheers.

Flashed to V212 yesterday. The first thing i notice in BIOS menu now displays basic CPU information, second is the boot priority menu change.

Aside from that, VBIOS and EC version stuffs still unchanged. After flashed it also reset most settings to factory. Which enabled bluetooth, webcam, eSATA and PCIe port that i disabled before. Also noticed windows 7 reinstalled Intel Express Chipset 5 drivers which i assume some changes with the system bus etc.

No BSOD so far and been playing games all day today, nothing goes wrong. Staying in aircon room with system fan still gives me the normal temp while gaming (with just slightly cooler), not sure if there's any voltage-to-system calibration stuff tweaked.

That will be all for V212 i know. Is definitely not worth it if just couple changes in BIOS menu. Hope i'm wrong :)

I am having the same issue on my laptop since reinstalling Win7. Often while typing the cursor will move to a different area of the screen on its own. I tried installing several different versions of the Elan drivers but none work. My touchpad just goes nuts as soon as I try to use it. Without drivers installed it defaults to regular microsoft mouse drivers and that works fine, including support for two-finger scrolling.

Might want to adjust the touch sensitivity and the touch area options. I personally hated all touchpad drivers so all my laptops are using default driver provided by Micros9ft.

The only time i experienced true hardware haywire was about an year ago. Restart didn't help but had to shutdown, take off AC power and battery for 30 mins or an hour waiting for the internal power charge drain. And that fixed it.

Anyone care to summorize this thread in few sentences ?
Is this laptop still worth getting, are there any problems with it ?
    How's the heat ?

There's so many different variations of this laptop, I'm getting lost which is which and what's the difference.
Anyone got a write down or a link that lists the models and differences ?

i ordered this ram from tiger direct and my N61-JQ's performance is fantastic now. i have the memory maxed out(8 gig 1066mhz) i only paid $94.99 U.S. dollars for the ram. The last time (3 months) i bought a 4gig 1066mhz stick i paid twice as much as i did this time so i think ddr3 is coming down in price.

Maybe look at the first page of this lounge and there you will find some of the answers to your questions.

ASUS has added a new model (N61JQ-B1) to this series. The only difference to the A1 model is that the new one comes with i7 740qm instead of 720qm.
Most probably they are going to discontinue the older versions with 720qm.

Here is a link to the new model from Gentech website:
    Asus N61JQ-B1 16" HD/i7-740QM/ATI HD 5730 1GB GDDR3/4GB DDR3/500G 7200rpm/DVDRW/W7HP64: GenTech PC Store

K, I'm in Canada so there's all the models still to buy.
There's X1, A1, B1, B2, but I narrowed it down to A1 or B1 for the two year global warranty.
The difference between the A1 and B1 is only $50, but what's the difference in the two cpu's ? Is the $50 difference between the two cpu's worth it ?

Here's the b1, it lists it with 720qm, is this a listing mistake ?

As far as I can tell here are the versions and the differences:

    N61JQ-X1: 320 GB hard drive, Intel Core i7 720QM, DVD/CD multi drive
N61JQ-A1: Same as X1 but with 500 GB hard drive
    N61JQ-B1: 500 GB hard drive, Intel Core i7 740QM, DVD/CD multi drive
N61JQ-B2: Same as B1 but with Blu-ray/DVD/CD combo drive

Please correct me if I missed something. All other specs seem to be the same.

I have the A1 and am very happy with it. Great performance, I play DiRT2, Red Alert 3, Crysis with almost all settings maxed out. Be aware that battery life is not the best. I get around 1h45 maximum doing regular office tasks. For gaming battery won't last more than 30-45 min.

In terms of heat, it gets quite hot internally when gaming and such, but the fan does a god job blowing the air out the left side to keep temps under control. The air coming out the vent is very hot though, and you need to keep your hands away or you will feel it! Underneath it will get warm but not excessively, I've had laptops that were much hotter than this one. Also the palmrest area will not get hot either so it is quite confortable to use. Under normal use such as web browsing and such it's quite cool and temperature is a not an issue, the fan is very quiet also even under high load.

Do you remember what kind of temps the cpu and gpu produce under heavy gaming ? Would be nice to know if I grab this that my temps are about right.

I started reading over 100 pages back to get some info, but 600 pages is just too much.
Also great work on the first page for organizing everything so nicely.

There are more models then you know my JQ comes with 640GB HDD and 1333MHz RAM while others 500GB and 1066MHz RAM : ASUS N61 Series - Specifications

I covered the temperature on this N61 long ago, is quite hot sometimes and the top temp usually depends where you use it, but is possible to take the temp down to around 40s range both GPU and CPU when proper cooling method kicks in. You won't like the idea of it. No one here will do.

I bought this laptop because of the price and performance i can affort at top. Is only midrange performance when comes to gaming.

flashed yesterday too, thanks for your feedback. I did not saw any intel express drivers update after reboot in my case and the cpu temp is like the same or 1 degre less but the computer box itself is more hot than before and I dont know why but my i7 seem to be slower than before now, I mean less reactive... My momentus XT temp is now at 35, around 37/38 before (since seagate sd23 firmware upgrade)

As a side note I am trying the IE9 beta on my N61 today. I know there is not a lot of IE fans here but this one is pretty cool. Might be worth trying.
You know me from Seattle always pimping Microsoft to help the local economy :D . But seriously this browser seems to raise the bar. Dude, check it out you might be suprised.

Well forgot to mention that i rebooted with all BIOS features enabled, the chipset and Express Root driver etc are detected as new hardware might just because the eSATA port has been enabled, it was disabled when i installed the OS.

I haven't notice any performance degradation so far, the CPU seems to be slow as always ever since i got the laptop. A flash back to 210 is always possible.

I also noticed higher turboboost timing a few times while watching task manager. But that can be rather unreliable.

I am also one of the few supporters of IE. :)
I usually use IE8 for most of the time. I had never any issue with it so far. I am using it together with Zonealarm forcefield which is a part of ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2010 .

I am waiting for the IE9 RC version to come out so that I can start using it.
I read about the improvements Microsoft is bringing to the IE9 and they seem to be promising.

I installed IE9 but it did something to wininet, which caused GTAIV to consitently crash on load. The wininet is something to do with http, and I guess it was messing with windows game live.

    lol

In fact, this processor is really powerful but the asus bios does not operate all its firepower, probably due to some overheating problem on some machines (I have between 129 and 132 MHz bus speed, supposed to have 133.3... and my different PLL do not accept any overclocking...). We need a bios that lets us play with the settings, asus can you hear us ?

I am having the following issue:

Whenever I am playing any sort of game the computer will randomly freeze for maybe 3-5 seconds and then keep going.

It's bizarre because I can run on the highest graphic settings with perfect FPS, no glitches and no PC slowdown but then it suddenly does a brief freeze up.

I am currently playing Dungeons and Dragons Online which is an older game without too high of graphics requirements and I run it on Ultra High settings most of the time in DX10.

I've tried running it down to very high, high, medium and even low settings and it doesn't seem to help.

I'm thinking it's processor related since the game is pretty processor intensive and most of the time the issue occurs whenever there's a change in on screen text. I.e. if I hover over an item description it's much more likely to do it. or when there's a significant event in the game that prompts on-screen text to appear. It's basically relegated to anything where a window text pops up.

I've tried updating the graphics drivers, downgrading them to previous versions, pretty much everything I can think of and nothing is helping.

For the record, during gameplay RAM remains at around 40% and the processor hovers around 10% at all times so there are no system resource issues. I simply cannot figure it out and it's frustrating me to no end since the system is essentially perfect otherwise.

I've got several friends that play the game that never have similar issues so it's definitely something to do with this system.

    Anyone else experience similar problems?

I'm open to pretty much any suggestions at this point.

Hey guys just picked up one of these from Newegg. So far so good. Just got done erasing all the bloatware and updating the drivers for the GPU.

I picked up Starcraft II yesterday and running it on high specs. Everything is smooth with no problems.

Thanks for the assistance in helping me decide which notebook to choose.

This thread discusses a similar freezing issue.

Maybe you can try upgrading WLAN or LAN drivers from the driver thread?

I've never had any issues with TF2, I usually run it at the highest settings. The only time I experienced any issues was related to issues between my wireless card (intel) and my router. Once that was resolved no issues.

I used to be a big fan of IE in the version 4 and 5 days. I currently still have to support version 6 and I curse the name of Microsoft every time I have to make the site look good in IE6. The problem with IE is right now you have to support IE 6, 7, 8 and soon 9 and they all render differently and have rendering bugs that never get fixed.

    Hi guys,

I became the proud owner of a N61JQ-A1 today! happy to see so many positive reviews here.

I had a question for you guys. I wanted to do a clean install of windows 7 pro on my system. But i want to keep the option of reverting back to the factory settings in future. Is keeping the recovery drive enough for that? Or do i have to make the recovery disks?

Please bear with me if this question has already been answered! :)

If I were you I'd do the safe thing and create the restore DVDs. Mine came with a restore DVD, but I've heard that ASUS was going to stop doing that.

    Thanks for the reply!
One more thing.. if I do create the recovery disks is it safe to delete the recovery partition?

From what I've read in previous posts yes it is safe to delete it if you burn the recovery DVDs. Personally I keep it until I need the space.

It does take a long time to burn the DVDs, be prepared.

Ever since I installed IE9Beta, the wifi on my laptops that I installed it on seem to need to be restarted after going idle. Anyone else have this issue?

I am also finding that applications are very slow to respond. This includes web apps (even Chrome) and Java applications (like Eclipse and Netbeans). Anyone else having these issues?
