I have 8GB RAM on my N71JQ, but I don't experience any problem with it.

Put your ear against the left side of your laptop, you should hear and feel air blowing out softly. Not really very scientific, but it's the quickest way to check your fan... By the way, my screen is silent.

I don't think anyone is explicitly ignoring you, I just think that some of our more advanced users who know a thing or two about sorting through BSoD errors (LordDavon helped quite a few people I believe) have been busy and haven't had the time to drop in on the forum.

Now the next time it happens, it may be helpful to instead look and see if the BSoD names a particular part of the PC to help you find the source of the problem (i.e. you may see keywords like video, or memory, etc). Also, if you plan on getting help from Microsoft Support, you need to get the memory dump file from when your computer crashes. This should help: How to read the small memory dump files that Windows creates for debugging

Also, just an off question, what kind of peripherals are you using? You said that it happened when you were gaming. Is there any chance that you have a Razer mouse? The only BSoD I've experienced on the N61JQ was because of the Razer drivers. If you really don't feel like contacting MS support or waiting for too long, a fresh install of windows and all of your essential drivers may clear up the issue.

I can't tell if it's off, or if it's very quiet.

If the fan wasn't working, would I NOT feel hot air coming from the side?

The directory structure should be the same, I'm on Debian Sid (unstable) and that's what I used to write the guide, and I've gotten tons of feedback from Ubuntu users that it works fine. Feel free to PM me, or just reply on that thread, if you have problems.

That's good to hear, I have Mint 10 RC 1 on it right now and it works but it is an off shoot of Ubuntu and I like the Debian version better. Think I'll give it a try with the liveCD and see if it works and if so I'll reinstall LMDE

Thanks I'll let ya know how I fare

ALLurGroceries, do you have the 3 finger swipe working for the elantech too? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and for the most part the touchpad works fine, but fn+F9 doesn't work, and none of the three finger functions work.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the N61JQ BIOS. I reinstalled the old RAM, and the fan behaved normally (other than the very first time I started it up after switching the sticks). When I put the 8 GB back in, the fan issue came back.

I wrote more stuff about that here:
[ubuntu] Elantech touchpad improperly recognized as “ImPS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse” - Page 8 - Ubuntu Forums

Fn+F9 works for me with the change to the script in the post above. I'm not sure about 3 finger swipe, I didn't use that ever on windows (I wiped it and installed Debian the day I got this notebook) but 3 finger tap works.

Which 8GB memory did you buy?

Hey all. Had my n61jq now for a few months. Its an i7 with the 5730 radeon. I was just wondering about the sd card reader that is built in. I have a 1gb SD which works just fine in it. I also have just bought a brand new 16gb hcsd card which does not work. It recognised it, and tries to format, but fails everytime. I put it in the device i bought it for and it appears to work fine but every time i put it in the card reader, it wants to format it again, and doesn't work. My question, is the reader hcsd compatible? Or is the sd card a dud?
    Thanks in advance...

I have two N61's, and a couple weeks ago one of them started having intermittent touchpad button problems. The left click only works about half the time. The right click works all the time. (which would lead me to believe its a hardware issue).

But- now the second machine started doing the exact same thing. I guess it could still be a hardware problem, as they are both exactly the same age and bought on the same date...meaning the buttons gave out about 6 months after daily use, but it sure does seem weird.

Basically, the left side of the touchpad button works about half the time (very annoying) and sometimes it works more than that if you concentrate on pressing it harder. Whether you press it light, normal or hard, it clicks each time, just doesn't register in windows 7. (right clicking DOES register everytime)

I've updated the drivers in Windows 7. Not sure what else to try other than taking the top section off and seeing if there's something to clean... :(

    real, real, annoying.

    @ ALLurGroceries
Thanks for the link to the excelent instructions, works like a champ and I now have the tap in the mouse applet for the touchpad.

I followed the instruction on page 8 referenced in the instruction about getting the Fn-F9 key to work. I didn't have the script file that was referenced so I copied the one that was in the post and used it, still no go. Not a big deal not sure if I would use it any way. Don't know if it worked with LM 10 or not.

Your instructions will work using the liveCD but they don't stick or get copied when doing the install.

    Thanks again for your help!!

Is there any way to clean install a copy of Windows 7 without burning four disks? I read that there is a CD key on the bottom of the laptop--can I use that to download a genuine copy of Window 7 Home Premium for clean installing?

Windows 7 download links this is one DVD. The tag on the bottom of the laptop is the Windows 7 serial number which is needed for the install, also make sure you get the corret addition or your serial number won't work. If you didn't delete it there is also a Recovery partition on the HD that can be accessed by pressing F9 on startup. This is suppose to reinstall the system to factory specs. Haven't tried any of it to know for sure if it works. I think installing from the Recovery partition installs all the bloatware as does the 4 DVDs that can be made for reinstalation. The download DVDs are clean as I understand it.

I personally got rid of all the Windows 7 stuff and installed Linux Mint.

Nope, i was looking a few days back.. After my laptop died mid way through a class.. lol
They might make one, it's doubtful though from what i read however....
    Sucks aye? :(

Does anyone use a laptop cooling pad? I'd use it for just at home, for when i game on my N61...
I've also found a decent one, would this be any good? I'm kind of looking at about $30-$40AUD Max. with Shipping.

    Oh and also,
So in "Disk Management" it's safe to delete the 14.65Gb "Healthy" partition (with no name) that i can't access and extend C:?

    Thanks in Advance! :)

This is what I use for all my Desktops, Laptops and Netbooks.

Use a USB Key to Install Windows 7?Even on a Netbook

The cdkey on the bottom works fine, you just might have to do a call in with the Windows 7 activation, for some reason on my reinstalls I can't activate online, I need to actually call into Microsoft's automated system and read digits in return for more digits.

Thanks gramps and elkind! Those links are helpful and the ISO image for W7 looks good. After clean installing, I think I'll go ahead and replace the partition on the laptop with a bloatware-free copy of Windows and create a copy on a USB drive!

Thank you again. I was afraid I couldn't get a recovery DVD without spending the time making them when I would much rather be spending my time installing the games and programs I have prepped for it. :)

Thanks for the reply. Concerning the cooling pad, I haven't seen the need to use it with this laptop. However, I have noticed that on high performance Asus mode, the laptop can feel hot on the left side of the keyboard. I'm not too sure how long this has been happening as this does not happen when I am doing a basic task like surfing and typing but when I am doing a photoshop or Premiere edit and I'm not using external stuff (monitor, keyboard and mouse), I start to feel it. Is this normal to feel the heat from this area or should that heat only be located to the extreme left where the exhaust fan actually is? (I'm feeling the heat as far as the keyboard letter R)

Matt-Matt: I wouldn't delete that partition, as it's probably the recovery partition. If you don't care about the recovery partition because you've got your own install disk, then deleting it would be fine.

    For those that are curious:

Following the advice of ASUS tech support, I downgraded BIOS from V212 to V210, and it resolved the fan speed issue. To be sure, I flashed V212 again, and the issue returned. Finally, I reverted back to V210 a second time, and the problem is again solved.

Something in the V212 BIOS introduced some fan control problems.

To the owners out there, how is the touchpad on this machine?
I'm currently using an early 2008 MBP and it has an amazing touchpad, never used one better than this.
I am, however, looking to buy a machine with a lot more power, and am considering this machine. How does the trackpad fare on it?

From my personal experience with the touchpad, I think it fares very well. Coming from a MBP, you'll instantly be used to scrolling (it's two-finger) but that's really the only multitouch function I use. With my touchpad in particular, if my fingers get particularly clammy, it can cause the touchpad you act a little funny (almost as if there's already a finger on it). This problem is fairly uncommon on my machine though.

I toyed with my friend's N61JQ and I think the touchpad is okay. It's not the most amazing one I've ever used, but it's very responsive (no noticeable lag) and the multi-touch feature works pretty well. I personally don't use multi-touch gestures because I've grown used to single touch trackpads. The size itself is generous, but I have problems with pressing the physical touchpad buttons. The left and right buttons are grouped into one long button, so I find it slightly more difficult to press the buttons closer to its center.

That's really my only complaint from my first impression. There's no problem with stuttering and it's easy to use with the exception of the combined buttons, which will probably be easy to adjust to.

EDIT: Thiggy1342, if you have problems with unintentional touches, I believe you can go into your Computer and change the sensitivity of your trackpad to prevent that from happening. Otherwise, coming from single-touch trackpads, I've never experienced that problem.

The touchpad on the N61 is good but, it is nothing compared to the MBP. Obviously, you aren't going to find one as good as the MBP in the Windows world.

I have been using MBPs since 2008 and the touchpad on the ASUS is comfortable. It isn't nearly as smooth or responsive but, for a Windows touchpad, it is one of the better ones. Just don't expect everything to flow as nicely as the MBP and you wont be disappointed.

Yep. I asked tech support if they would release a BIOS update which includes the improvements of V212 (cooler temps is all I really noticed compared to V210) but which also fixes this issue, and she responded:

"For your issue, my friend, yes, ASUS will release a BIOS update that includes the improvements of V212, please pay attention to our website below:
    http://support.asus.com.cn/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=N61Jq"

So I'll keep an eye out for an update and post it to the driver thread.

I kinda need a cooling pad!...
I Ran the Intel stress test and my temps maxed at 90 degrees! or so.. Which is kinda crap even for an i7m CPU, and yeah ill run the stress test again to see if i get "heat" on/near the letter R for you, but you might want to look into a program called "Speccy" for the temps of the CPU etc.. It doesn't tell you the VGA temp, but see what your CPU Temps are and we can compare to other users out there :)

EDIT: I can't feel heat near the letter R.... when i run it... Re-Running 5 times in a row (i suggest the same) oh and also run on "Maximum" setting for best results. ;). And also My idle temps are about 65ish
Download for stress test i'm using is, here

Sorry to carry on about this, but my "average high" for the test linked above was 89-90, is that good or bad?

Generally speaking this laptop does not have a heat problem. Some are not comfortable with the temps they get but they are within the specs. And no matter what anyone tells you a cooler is practically useless for this machine because of its cooling design.

Just tried using the webcam on LifeFrame, but it says it is being used in another application. It doesn't work on any of my other programs like skype and etc. I don't have anything running in the background, and I uninstalled smartlogon and the other webcam using programs. My webcam driver is also up to date. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work. What could the problem be?

I had this error just the other night and all I did was reinstall the ASUS virtual camera software (I'm sure you can find a link to it in the N61jq driver thread). I believe this program allows your camera to be used by more than one application at once, so while it may not solve the root problem of your camera woes, it should at least work as a short term fix.

It doesn't seem to be a problem with unintentional touches as much as the touchpad just seems to think there's n+1 number of fingers on the touchpad when my hands get too clammy. I don't really have a problem because my hands stay relatively dry while typing, but some of my friends do. Has anyone else dealt with this before?

Thanks, works for now. I installed the version ending in 207. Hopefully the reason it works is because of the driver and not just a random moment where the webcam works.

Is it possible to somehow change GPU clocks chaning power managment modes? What i mean is like now "High performance" mode has 650/800 GPU clocks... i wanna make them let's say 710/900 1.1V. When i get back to "Entertainment" mode clocks would automaticaly change to 300/300 0.9V. Simply, is it possible to adjust GPU clocks on those power managment modes?
The reason why i need this is that for unknown reason i can't so ATI Overdrive in my CCC menu. Can't even see "Configure Swichable Graphics" option when i right click on CCC( so i could change GPU modes from High Performance( white light) to Power Saving(blue light)... Maybe i have to turn it on in BIOS?

I have the same problem. Strangely enough, it only happens when it is booting Windows. For a week it is fine booting, and suddenly WHAMM, it locks up when it's about entering Windows desktop. Reboot, still lock up. Several more tries, it comes back normal. I can reboot like 10x, and it still doesn't lock up.
Another week or two, again WHAM, locks up like crazy. Try several times in safe mode, and it comes back normal again. I don't know what the hell it is all about. I have tried to disable all startup items, ATI driver update, etc and it does't help.
When it acts, it acts !
So, every 1-2 weeks, I have to fight with the invisible demon in my N61JQ for 5-10 min forcing hard reboot like 10-15 times until it finally goes into my desktop, then I know it will be fine from that point for another 1-2 weeks.

I almost feel like the demon whispers in my ears "See you in the next 2 weeks, dude !. You win again this time" :D

I had random freezes during bootup that turned out to be my LAN drivers amazingly. I tracked it down by doing a binary-search type method. I picked about 10 different devices in device manager that I thought might be causing problems, and disabled them half at a time. If it survived 10 consecutive reboots, I knew it wasn't that half. Then narrow it down.

Regarding the lockups. Try Stevedoggs advice first, it may very well be a mis-installed driver or something.

To be sure it's not a hardware issue, try booting into a Live CD of some flavor (mint, ubuntu, etc) and see if it boots without problems. If you have trouble booting to the live CD as well, it may indicate a hardware issue that would be covered under warranty. If it boots with no problems, and you get sick of playing with drivers, you might consider saving your data and booting the recovery partition (F9 at ASUS screen) The recover may seem a bit harsh, but if you have your data backed up, it's surprisingly quick to get back up and running.

What are the drivers required for the 5 media buttons on the N61JQ? I clean installed W7 and I don't know which driver fixes it (the driver disk did not help).

The last Windows I had was XP so I don't have a clue where they store the tmp files any more but I do know they can casue problems. Seems Windows reads the files in the temp dir when it boots. Who knows why. I couldn't tell you the strange problems I have cured by deleting the tmp files.
