Just looking at that, i belive the default option seems fine, otherwise use the "$15.00 to Australia", I'm pretty sure it should be the default. lol
Anyway have fun with the SSD/HDD your putting in there :p

Concerning the Splendid Video Enhancement tool: I finally figured out how to use this on my N61JQ with my restricted user account. If you login and work with your res. user account the keyboard shortcut Fn+C (a blue S for Splendid) wont work. If you'd like to use the tool anyhow do as follows: You need to create 2 desktop shortcuts, the first for "C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\Splendid\ACMON.exe" the second for "C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS\Splendid\Backbone.exe". Now everytime you want to change the color profile you at first doubleclick the acmon shortcut and enter your admin password. Next you doubleclick backbone.exe and again enter you admin pass. Now the profile select screen appears and you can choose for instance: Gamma Correction (which is my fav. profile when watching movies). Hope that helps. Have fun. bb.

Hi there i just bought a N61JQ-JX001V and the only account i made at windows configuration isn't a administrator account, so i can't change anything as the system always asks for a Administrator password!

I really made a effort searching the thread, i searched for all post with "account", "Admin", "administrator" and "password" and did not find anything relating to this situation. I can't set another account i can't set up nothing, it keeps asking me for password. Any ideas?

EDIT: Found the solution on the web, i had to get in safe mode, this way i could see the administrator account that was hidden, then went into the control panel change my user account into administrator.

Jesus, i was thinking i had to format the whole thing, but even worse, that i had to pick up all the essential drivers before i did.

Well, the left trackpad / touchpad click has not gotten any better. I tried using a live cd linux, and had the same problem. So it's not a driver issue.

For now I've switched my main click to the right side, but man what a pain in the butt. I have two machines both bought on the same day, both have the same problem: the left click started dieing after 6 months or so of use.

My choices now are to consider sending them both in for warranty service, which seems to be spotty at best from the feedback on various Asus forums, or try to have a local guy I know fix the issue.

I remember some people mentioning that it was better to have your unit sent to one repair facility over another. Anyone know which that is and can you request where your system goes?

    Many thanks.

Edit: I see from the front page that you should request an RMA from USA1, does this sound correct still?

I think I read somewhere here on the forum that the leds that light the power button change colors according to the power being consumed or the likes. I think blue was engery saving or low power and white was high power.

I installed Linux on mine right out of the box and my leds are always white. Not that it's a big deal I was just wondering of any of the other Linux users had them changing colors.

Hm, that's worth a shot. How come I didn't think of that.
I remember Linksys Wireless-G PCI card had similar boot problem which was caused by incompatibility with the N-router it detected during boot.
Right now, I'm still using the original LAN & WLAN driver from Asus because the new Atheros driver V9.1.0.100 gave me problem. It only connects 65Mbps with my DLink DIR-615 router, when the original driver always at 150Mbps.

I will try to update to V9.1.0.314 this time, and try Win7 KB2265716 patch.
Let's see if it solves my problem. I will update in 2-3 weeks. Thnks.

    D. Often the display will blank, flash, then reappear as if it recovered from something.

This my second machine with similar problem. Returned the first one to amazon.
The machine is great WHEN it is working.
Did a memory check using Win7 built in scan- checked Okay. WHat gives?

I don't think they change colors at all, mine have always been white, for any power configuration. I wish we could turn off or dim the blinking light when in sleep mode.

    Hi

I've come across a problem with my N61JQ :( When I try write a question mark using the right shift key and the question mark, it does let me, but does with the left shift key. The right shift works with other keys, any ideas?

Hey, is there any way to decrease the sensitivity of the touchpad, meaning more pressure needs to move the cursor? I have found that, when typing, the touchpad gets in the way and that when my fingers are anything but dry, my previous taps may be registered as an intentional press.

I have not found a way to adjust the sensitivity, even on drivers that have a sensitivity control (it seems to do nothing). I would recommend using V7.0.5.12. It has a Smart Area feature (double-click touchpad taskbar icon, scroll down to Smart Area, and enable it) which prevents accidental touchpad activity while typing. Basically, what it does is this: whenever you press a key (typing), it locks out the touchpad until you touch it inside this special zone near the center.

I was just looking around ebay and found...
    THIS
Would it be any good? :D

If it does could i replace it before i send it off without Asus Noticing?
and doesn't the N61 fan through the keys... i heard a rumor or something somewhere...
    Thanks! :D lol

    Hey folks,
I've had an N61JQ-XV1 for about a week now and I'm loving this thing

I had a Win 7 pro install so I immediately wiped everything and went fresh and then installed the few ASUS apps that I liked

    question for anyone who knows

I'd like to add a Bluray drive to this thing but don't know if there are any special considerations for it.
    Would this one work?

    CT21N LG Electronics CT21N Slim 6X Blu-ray SATA Super-Multi Combo Drive, Bulk - Blu-ray Drives - SuperBiiz.com

LG Electronics CT21N Slim 6X Blu-ray SATA Super-Multi Combo Drive
seems like a great deal at $135

edit: I can't tell if this thing has an IDE or SATA optical drive
    anyone know?

thx folks, this site is great

    Follow up question:

anyone know if the drivers directly from Realtek have the SRS software included with them, or is it just the ASUS package?

You will not be able to hook this up and just have the backlit keys work. It will require some modding, which several people have done. I think if you use wire glue vs. soldering you will not void your warranty.

Okay, thanks for the driver though, that might help a bit. If anybody does discover how to change the touchpad's sensitivity, I'd love to know!

And sorry to drop off questions like this, but this has been bugging me at an incredible amount. Is there a possibility to change the increments of the volume increase and decrease buttons on the laptop? The only way I can set a volume inbetween 0 and 12 is to use Window's volume control panel. I honestly don't care above that. Volumes 50-100 are generally too loud and I can't imagine ever using that unless I wanted to blast music à la boomboxes.

Other than this and a couple of problems I've had (like stupidly deleting the Windows.old folder and having to reinstall Windows from the recovery partition), I've been loving my week-old N61JQ-XV1. Thanks for all of your help!

    Thanks dude :)
Lol i didn't even think of that haha :)

    EDIT: Forget about it...
I was reading the disassembly guide just then (out of boredom) and found that the N61 has an "LED Connector" so it is possible to just hook up the backlit Keyboard to that rather then have it run off the USB power.. I have no idea wheter as to if it turns off or what. It does however fix my problem and save voiding the warranty :)
    I shall test this myself! :) I can't wait now :)
I took a photo for people to make sure/know what to look for, hopefully the quality is good enough :)

I am still monitoring that thread and has replied to Matt-Matt. :)

It should completely dry within a few hours.
Maybe you should use some tape to hold the wire in place until the glue is dried.

I think Ken tested this some time ago with a N61JQ and he said that this connector does not work as this feature seems not to be programmed into the bios.

Okay, Someone pleas help me out, here. I am LITERALLY (I know how to use the word. I mean it) ready to chuck this thing out of my 6th floor dorm window.

I had problems with Catalyst control center, and I uninstalled all of the drivers. I tried to reinstall everything, but it won't install the video card driver! I'm stuck with some default VGA driver that makes is slow as molasses and has a max resolution at 1024. Is there any way to install the driver that doesn't involve ATI's system?

I had problems with CCC a few driver versions back, I think I ended up reverting back to 10.6 for a while and waiting for 10.8 to come out. When I updated after that, my problem was solved.

You might also try uninstalling everything ATI (CCC and drivers) and starting fresh..

6 hours? Then hopefully you won't mind spending an extra half hour to try clean installing Windows 7 from here (not the one in your recovery), using the included drivers disk to install all of the drivers, and then installing the ATI 10.10 driver here.

The copy of W7 on your recovery partition should include all drivers (including ATI) to make everything work fine. Did the max resolution problem come up out of the box or after you clean installed Windows 7 (if you did at all)?

Did you try ASUS e-driver feature?

    Start>Programs>Asus Utility>e-driver

Does the e-driver utility show ATI VGA as installed or not?

What about backing up your files and performing a system recovery to factory defaults? Takes less than 6 hours..

Can you not install the last working Catalyst version (10.8 I assume)? If not, try this:

    1) Uninstall any ATI-related stuff in Control Panel

    2) Run DriverCleaner or Driver Sweeper to delete ATI components (for DriverCleaner, you should do it in safe mode; not sure about Driver Sweeper).

    3) Open device manager and expand the displays section. Right click and uninstall your display device (maybe called VGA Adapter or something). If there is a checkbox to delete driver software, check it.

    4) In device manager, scan for new hardware changes (from the menu). The display device will come back. Repeat step 3 until you are no longer presented with the checkbox.

    5) Try to install Catalyst 10.10. Skip the downloader and get it direct here.

Does anybody else have a problem with seeing gradients? I just booted up Photoshop CS5 today and I was surprised to see the gradients were very choppy (instead of smoothly transitioning, it would take 10-20 pixels for each intermediate color). I checked pictures of gradients on Google and looked at some vector images on my hard drive and they also have the same problem, so I can safely assume it's not Photoshop.

If you want to do photoshop with any kind of accuracy, then this laptop is not for you. It has a strong blue bias and terrible colour accuracy.

I'm not sure if it's the same problem you're having, but ever since I installed Catalyst 10.10, my computer will run in what looks like 16 bit color. It's not a huge deal, all I have to do is lock the screen (with windows key + L) and then log in and the problem is resolved, but it's sort of odd.

Thanks for the tip thiggy, I'll try that out soon.

Also, Risco, I'm actually using a 22-inch 1080p external monitor (also from Asus) that is actually impressive with its fast response times, strong contrast, and pretty good true color. But I don't have time or space to carry it around with me, so it's very convenient to use the laptop's monitor, besides for its smallish resolution. To be honest, I think the Soft Mode for the laptop's display is relatively okay. Thanks for the warning though, I definitely notice the incandescence to the color (which the custom display modes help counter a bit).

    Thanks everyone for the help.

I read and reread the description in the link, but I still don't understand how that would be legal. And what would be the ramifications of doing a clean install (I've never done one before). Would everything be lost in the install?

Have you tried the fix from this thread? The guy has the same problem due to out-of-date Visual C++ runtime libraries. I think you can install it from within the Catalyst installer itself:

Run the installer, and choose "Custom" so that it lets you choose which components to install. When you get a list of checkboxes, click the button that selects all of them. This should place a check by the runtime library. Now uncheck all of the other boxes except the library. If you're lucky, it will install the library. Then try a normal Catalyst install. If that doesn't work, install all four of the links in this post and try again. They are good to have on your system, as they effect the performance of a lot of programs.

Hey David, Quit secretly lurking here. And bring us some free stuff ! :D

    Good luck on the 22nd.

Campbell, Dude your killing me. I sense the natives are getting restless with you. If it was me I would just use the recovery partition to restore it to the factory settings and start over. It is nice to have that partition and very easy to use. I have used it twice and it is kind of refreshing to start over. Now you could do a fresh install like most people do. But personally I have no problem with the bloatware so it is easier for me to use restore. The bloatware has never seemed to affect my performance and it does not take up enough space to make a difference.
I know I am in the extreme minority but I don't worry about the bloatware or my temps. I just turn it on and it rocks as it has done since February. If it gets buggy I restore it. Your making this way to complicated. Back up your stuff, restore it, and let poor stevedogg get on with his life before he throws up his hands and pulls the plug on our update thread. :D

Some shout outs to the founders.

Tony- Are you on shore and how is the command center looking?
2mny- Did you replace your stolen N61 yet?
Adamal- Whats going on with you bro?
Risco & (Professor) Turbogear- Thanks for all the contributions here.
Deathwinger- Don't think we will ever see the 9 cell.
brochiller- Where did you go man? And don't come back with the lame School, Work, New girlfriend crap.
David, Good luck with the surgery!
Stevedogg- aka The update man! Don't let the rookies get to you bro. And stop spending so much of your time trying to hold their hands. They will figure it out.
And lets not forget Wishmaster- I bet you wish you bought an N61 instead of your corny HP wishy!

I've been loving the laptop too... except for the bluetooth. My bluetooth mouse disconnects randomly (seems to be more frequent while using webcam) and won't restart without removing/re-pairing (which sometimes doesn't even work). I don't know if it's a Windows thing or a BT-270 thing, but it sure is aggravating . I've tried enabling the bluetooth services and disabling power management in device manager (both common solutions online), and it still disconnects!

    Yes i had that too...
By any chance did you have a Microsoft Notebook Mouse 5000 or something along the lines of that? Because that's what i had
I am returning my mouse tomorrow hopefully to purchase another Logitech one (like my mums i'm using atm) I'll find out if it's hardware related to the laptop/mouse however. :)

You must be talking about my signiture. The 965 reference is to my desktop. Some people list all their computers in their signiture including desktop computers. I listed my desktop because I got it right after the i7's came out and I was pretty proud of it at the time. It was a $4,000 computer that I got for $1,500 on ebay because the seller didn't know how to list it right so not many people caught it.
The post of mine that you put up is talking about upgrading the wireless card.

I will add my bluetooth mouse problem to the list. I have a Logitech anywhere MX mouse which I love and would highly recommend. It does not disconnect but I get this annoying error message every time I start the laptop. ( Error unable to start the blue tooth stack service)

I have a Dell Bluetooth Travel Mouse (rebranded Logitech). The latest thing I'm trying (as of last night), is completely removing the Broadcom WIDCOMM software and manually using the Windows bluetooth stack (using "Generic Bluetooth" instead of the BT-270 driver).

Update: This laptop has been used to edit an entire 92 minute feature length film. :D I'll post up a trailer pretty soon.

Using the generic driver didn't work. Lost the mouse again. I'm getting these warnings in the log when it happens: "Bluetooth HID device (xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx) either went out of range or became unresponsive."
