The weird part is, Skype didn't have any issues when I was running the Beta a few months back. I did update all my drivers a while back and am afraid I may have killed the webcam. Nothing can use it.![]()
-
I updated the webcam driver, then rolled back the driver because the new one inverted the image and I was too lazy to find the flip thingy in the registry.
I've been having the same problem as you lately, Skype would start with the webcam, then just die. A new version of Skype showed up today, and that didn't help. I resorted to updating the driver to the latest one in the driver thread, and that didn't help either.
Asus life frame could use the camera though. And it was interesting to note that if it was at full resolution, it lagged like crazy and the taxed the CPU.
Edit: It must be a driver issue, as I just checked in Ubuntu 10.10, and aside from being upside down the webcam seemed to work fine. -
Since I updated and rollbacked the drivers, I get two tabs in the Mouse control panel with the Elan logo, and both with the same driver number, each will work if I click on it.
I switched to the right button for a while, just couldn't stand it, and thought about sending my laptop in for warranty. Then after using this driver for a while, it seems to have gone away. I'm very sensitive to non-response of the left button, and it hasn't happened for about 10 days or so.
The actual mechanism underneath the button is a square metal "box" with a round plastic button. I'm not sure if there is a spring under there or what. Incidentally, it looks like the same exact mechanism inside of a clock radio I took apart one time to repair, for all the buttons like "snooze".
I noticed when the left button didn't work, that it seemed more responsive when I was hitting it directly. The button underneath is actually not too far from the center of the bar. More like if you had a physical left and right button, it would be in the center of the left. This is where the actual plastic piece of the trackpad "bar" on the left side protrudes down and makes contact. If you push all the way to the left, I don't know that it pushes it directly down or not.
Regardless, I think the design is just finicky. I've seen other motherboard designs where the buttons were actually part of the trackpad mechanism underneath. As a side note, I installed a Live CD of Linux, and when the button wasn't working, it wasn't working in Linux either. So it WASN'T the driver, to the best of my knowledge.
Bottom line: I think the mechanism underneath, whether on the right or left, can get out of alignment or stop making contact all the way. Eventually though, it's possible that it corrects itself. On the other hand, it's possible it will mess up again. I'm sitting here pushing it over and over as I type this, and it hasn't missed once yet, so I'm hopeful it has worked itself out.
However, I have a second N61, and it was doing this same thing. I will keep you posted on if it "works itself out" or not. Same config, everything. -
@xjestersdeadx ok thanks, keep me posted.

So it's been awhile since I've asked this question... Any recommendations on an upgrade to 8gb ram out there?
-
My upgrade to 8gb of ram was necessary as I edit HD video and pictures and the 4GB was getting eaten up quickly.
It makes a world of difference to me. -
Oh no, I definitely want to upgrade.
I meant any recommendations in terms of actual memory.
edit: Also Deathwinger, how on earth do you get 2-3 hours battery? -
hi first time i post here
Im wondering if anyone else have the same issues i went true
This is the 2 time asus change the motherboard of my laptop
So im at my 3 motherboard so far and im realy affraid that when my garenty will end i will be stuck with the same problem
By the way i bought the laptop in february , motherboard was defect in june, repaired ,then motherboard seem to have been the problem again and has been changed last friday
im using the laptop for music , internet , movies ,and game like american army , counter strike , bbc2 , World of warcraft
my laptop is running 24/7 and usualy im having greasemonkey script running 24/7 aswell while doing all my stuff
Am i asking to much for this laptop ?
it cost me about 1400 Canadian dollars back in february
should i consider selling it to change it ? and what price should i ask considering what i paid for it ?
what are your thoughts about this fellow n61jq-a1 user ?
edit : im planing to buy a new tv so i can connect my laptop to watch tv and movies from internet, while in ex playing wow , can i do this with this laptop ?
my setting would be :laptop connected to tv via hdmi, and laptop connected to monitor . i would like to be able to play stuff from my computer on my tv while using my monitor to play games at the same time . is this possible and how the laptop would take it ? -
The only way you will find a much better laptop is to go bigger, which you'd only have a better GPU in comparison to this. What's actually happening to the motherboard? and I don't think you'd be able (or realy want to) play games and watch movies at the same time.. I don't think it would be doable either. Especially for newer games.
I don't think you should sell it, you will only get half if your lucky... If you need a more powerful machine you should invest in a desktop and use that at home? -
hello everyone
sorry for my english. i have a question.
some of my friends have n61jq and they have problem with screen or GPU. when in Mediaplayer or in internet or some CAD software, the screen goes grainy. some yellow and blue grains come and fill screen. in the end they must turn off or restart windows to solve this.
one of them said this problem happen only when there is AC Adaptor Connected. i told him to configure GPU to run with 300 mHZ frequency. gpu driver Update and flashplayer update didn't fix this problem.
can you help me with this problem ? -
I don't have any problems like that with my machine. It sounds like it could be a hardware problem which would be covered under warranty.
You might also want to verify that the cooling is set to active when plugged in. -
Does anyone else have problems hibernating? When I tell my laptop to hibernate, the screen goes black. When I touch the touch pad, it comes back up to the Windows lock screen instantly. I've tried 'shutdown -h', setting the power button to hibernate instead of shut down, and choosing Hibernate from the start menu. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Any help would be appreciated.
-
da_knowledge, that happens with me too, except that, after about 1 or so minutes, the laptop finally hibernates. I'm simply tolerating this because I don't think Windows 7's sleep mode is as good as Windows XP's. If anybody knows how to make the laptop turn off quickly but still "turn off", I'd love to know. Windows 7 sleep mode is some strange standby mode which I greatly dislike considering the usefulness people found with XP.
Also, concerning screen problems, I've recently noticed that there's a few screen problems. They're not too bad, but I'd be comforted if it I know it's normal. First off, with pure black, the screen displays static grain, making the black more of a grainy dark gray. Secondly, if I slowly pull a window across the screen and pay attention, I can see the windows content and edges become interlaced (pixels are alternating 1 pixel left and right). I've heard about this problem with monitors before addressed as "dancing ants" as per the effect of selection marquees in Photoshop. Lastly, when cleaning the screen off completely, I realized that some of the dust was actually beneath the acrylic sheet. Nothing too bad but if it gets in the way, I might remove the cover and clean it off. -
blue and yellow Square fill screen. -
anyone know if we can update the N61-JQ processor and which one we can use?
-
I figured out my hibernation issue. I'm dual booting with Ubuntu 10.10. I found out that Windows 7 (and maybe other versions) needs it's partition set to active in order to hibernate. Grub2 didn't do this for me and probably doesn't for anyone else. Now that I have made the necessary changes to Grub, I can hibernate! I don't know if there's a minimum post count to have links, but I can provide more info if needed.

I dropped my Laptop when travelling to my sister's place
Real angry with myself
and now it has a huge hole and and a piece that I manage to salvage...but still looks real bad
No running issues though!

I called Asus and asked them if my Accidental Damage Warranty has been activated yet, but it seems that the card I mailed in a couple of weeks ago hasn't reached or been processed yet.
I also registered online, but they mailed me saying I should send such and such documents, which I already mailed a couple of weeks ago. Called customer service and they told me to wait a week.
I havent told them I dropped it yet, just that I wanted to knot the status of my ADW.
Any suggestions on how to proceed with ADW? Or should I keep this one just as it is? I think I'll have to wait till it's confirmed first -
The machine whines so bad when running on batteries. Help me with this.

Guys how can I uninstall Chinese from my machine's language settings?
Also, how can I disable the caps lock function when I'm playing a game? Everytime I accidentally press it, the game (BFBC2) goes from fullscreen to windowed- yeah it's starting to get annoying. -

They use a brand called Black Diamond. So far, its working pretty good with everything I put it into. Desktops and laptops. -
Computer memory upgrades for ASUS N61Jq Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com -
I just did one of those benchmark tests with a program called 3dmark11. My score was "P1038 3DMarks" on 3dmark06 my score was 7048. Is this normal? I don't really understand computers that well, for Marines a hammer is high tech once you teach them how to use it. I have an Asus N61Jq-A1 and I noticed Oblivion was running slow even though its an old game so I am trying to figure out what is wrong with it (If anything)
*Edit
My system specs are as follows:
Asus N61Jq| CPU: Intel i7 - 740QM / Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730; VRAM 1GB / Display: 1366 x 768 / RAM: 4GB / OS Win 7 64 Premium -
I can't remove a language file.
There are two reasons why this might occur:
*
The language you are trying to remove is the system language. The system language is the default language of the user interface. The system language can't be removed.
*
To work properly, other languages on your computer require the language you are trying to remove. This is the case with Language Interface Pack (LIP) languages and their parent languages. You must remove the LIP before or at the same time you remove its parent languages.
I can't run the Install or Remove Language Files wizard.
There are two reasons why this might occur:
*
User Account Control (UAC) is turned off and you're trying to run the wizard without administrative rights. You must be logged on to an administrator account to install language files. If UAC is turned on, Windows will ask you for permission to run the wizard. If UAC is turned off, you can't give your permission so you can't run the wizard. You need to log on to the computer as administrator or turn on UAC. For more information, see What is User Account Control?
*
The wizard is already running. Wait for the wizard to finish what it's doing, and then try running the wizard again.
For your capslock problem, you have to either disable it permanently using RegEdit or you have to be extra careful when playing games.

Maybe are the drives of Ati, because this starts after I update them.
Try the 10.12, Im going to do that -
I've had my Asus now for two weeks, and I am experiencing the same issue as many of you have posted about - the webcam frame rate is incredibly low, to the point that it is basically unusable.
But I am curious, I would like to know if there's anyone on this forum who has this built-in webcam running smooth, 25-30 fps (like it should). Am I part of a minority for this issue, or does everyone have this problem? Please let us know! -
I had to delete the drivers that I "upgraded" and finally got back to what I think were the original ones that came with the machine...5.8.54000.1.
I've attached a screeny showing the driver number. It seems to be working OK now. It's still a noisy image, but at least the video is at a decent frame rate.
To delete the drivers I used the Uninstall (Advanced) button and deleted the driver files. After this, the camera disappears, and you can rightclick on the machine at the top of hardware manager and refresh. This will re-install the camera with whatever driver windows can find. I had to do this twice before getting back to this driver.
Edit: The version numbers of the driver files look the same as the ones in Version v5.8.54000.0 on the Asus support page: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?model=Camera&os=30&SLanguage=en-usAttached Files:

Hey everybody! I haven't checked in here lately. I just used the recovery partition and it still works great. Things were getting a little buggy so I thought what the hell. It didn't take long to update the Microsoft stuff and now this thing is a lot more snappy! I was having a lot of problems with java and could not fix it. Now that is all gone. I'm wondering if it had something to do with IE9, I know I never learn and keep using IE. With all do respect to stevedogg I think I will not update any drivers for awhile as it is working so well.
I picked up my first smart phone 2 weeks ago. It is the MYtouch 4G. I wouldn't know the difference but my impression is what a great phone! I can tether and wifi hotspot for no additional charge. But I have been fighting with T-mobile in their forums over a controversy with this phone having 2 different quality screens. Mine was the great screen, then my wife got one and it was the washed out one. So some of us have been hammering them in their forum trying to get them to ackowledge this. I was lucky and got mine replaced on the first try. Some have sent their phone back up to 7 times.
So that's what I've been doing. What's going on with the Founders? Anyone still lingering here?
I know I got off topic for this lounge. But I figure since I started the Lounge I can get away with it. -
Yeah, I've used the recovery partition a couple times, I do like how quick and easy. I think the next time I do a recover the only driver I'll upgrade is the ATI driver. None of the other drivers seemed to fix anything, and the webcam driver actually made it worse. Driver support from Asus has been the only weak point of this purchase so far.
Good luck with the MyTouch... -
Again, I'd like to get a response from people here if they know a way to make the volume buttons more precise. The volume increases from 0% to 12% and then goes up by 6% from there, which is a really strange thing to do. I'm asking this here because it's mostly specific to the N61's audio card/driver.
I've trawled Windows 7's audio settings along with those provided by SRS and Realtek, but I can't manage it. Also, I realize you can change the volume using customized hotkeys and the taskbar's volume control, but this is regarding the volume button itself.
Thanks an unimaginable amount if you can help! I switch between non-remote headphones and speakers at a regular basis, so I need more precise volume changes. -

Ive been working on my machine for about 8 hours a night for the last four nights and can't figure out why my laptop's performance is below what it should be.

3DMark11 marks on really new tech hardware and uses dx11 and even though our graphics card is dx11 capable isn't the newest or best. That 3DMarks11 score is about right and so is the 3dmark06 score although you could get better from a slight overclock.
Check out the settings you are running Oblivion at and maybe reduce if necessary. -

well I've been concentrating on Xmas shopping with my wife and finally all presents have been bought and before you start asking guys no presents for you. For myself I've bought a Qnap TS-219p+ NAS as my old notebook which worked as a download station has died on me, hopefully it will arrive on Monday. In the mean time I've used the N61 to download and it's working great 24/24, I just had to mess with the power settings to keep it from hibernating.
I wish all the members of this forum a peaceful and merry Xmas, and a very drunken New Year
Cheers,

Hi. I changed some settings in of the preconfigured Power4Gear energyprofiles thinking I could just click on "restor default settings" and ... well ... that button was always greyed out. So I deinstalled the Power4Gear Hybrid software, downloaded it from ASUS'S support webpage and reinstalled it, but the profiles arent back and I cant use the Fn+Space combination to change between profiles. Any advice? Thanks.
-
Speed wise and gaming I cannot fault it at all. But I need more battery life, and I will be looking for a nVidia based optimus system next time. Oh and I never have really solved the annoying cpu whine
Oh and Merry Xmas everyone!
-
I entered the N61JQ specs here ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- and then under "Utilities" I downloaded the only available package "Power4Gear_Hybrid_WIN7_64_Z1129.zip"
Edit: I also dont know which version was installed previously and where I would be able to get it from. -
hi. I'm proud to be an owner of this laptop. I would like to ask some questions though.
1) Is there any updates in overclocking the processor? (setfsb) or bios mod for unblocking bclk? Or is there a bios mod multiplier settings thru bios?
2) Can this laptop handle an i7 840qm processor? If so, is the ac adapter with a maximum 90 wattage can handle the task especially if u use prime 95?
Hoping to hear some feedbacks soon. Thanks -
Point of interest, Asus have released an update for Asus Video Magic.

Hi all,
I'm a new (noob) owner of a N61JQ and I'm having an audio problem I hope you can help me with.
I have a commercial Panasonic plasma monitor (no hdmi) and I have the ASUS connected to it via VGA cable and the picture is fine.
I have a Yamaha receiver that doesn't have an HDMI connection. So I've ordered one of these ( For only $2.09 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 6ft Toslink to Mini M/M 5.0mm OD Molded Cable | Toslink to Mini Plug) which I think will solve my problem.
Until that arrives though I'm using a stereo headphone jack and I have the two rca cables plugged in the AUX on the receiver but I can't get it to work. When I open some program for sound in the control panel there's a button that says "Test" and when I press that, sound comes out of my two monitor speakers one after the other (so it is communicating with my receiver). But if I play a dvd there's no sound.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance. -
You need to make sure you have spdif in settings for powerdvd.
-
Is powerdvd one of the pre-loaded programs?

hi everyone,

Does anyone know a way to slightly overclock the i7-740QM and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 GPU? -
I think I've found a solution to the mouse button problem. It's now my belief that this is a case of other processes taking priority over certain motherboard functions, like the mouse buttons.
On two different N61JQ's, I have implemented this solution, and it appears to have fixed the problem. The user of the second laptop just told me they "haven't thought about it in two days"...which means they forgot it was a problem because the mouse hasn't been "missing" clicks.
OK, here's what I did. I got to thinking about what on Earth could be the issue, other than hardware failure. Then I remembered building systems in the 90's, (geez, I'm getting old), and how you always had to tweek the IRQ addresses so everything would work. Well, IRQ's are STILL used, but today they usually aren't much of a problem.
Still, I found people do still get conflcts. It turns out that there WASN'T a conflict in this case. My trackpad had an IRQ of 12 all to itself. But...there is a way to tell Windows to prioritize what it's doing IRQ wise. Once I did this, it fixed my issue.
(Note: this involves editing your registry, so you might want to make sure you have a good backup of things if you aren't sure what your doing).
Here's what I recommend you try:
1. Type msinfo32.exe in the Start bar. Click to open the System Information Utility. Go to System Summary-->Hardware Resources-->IRQs. Make a note of the IRQ assignment numbers of the CMOS and ELAN PS/2 Port Smart-Pad. On mine, they are 8 and 12 respectively.
2. Now you're going to edit the registry. Type regedit in the Start bar, and then open the registry editor. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-->SYSTEM-->CurrentControlSet-->Control-->PriorityControl
3. Right click in the PriorityControl box, and choose NEW, then DWORD VALUE (32 Bit). Even if you have 64 Bit Windows 7, you need to choose DWORD VALUE. Create a new DWORD value, and name it IRQ8Priority.
4. Repeat #3, except call the next one IRQ12Priority. (Note: these are the names representing MY IRQ's...yours might be different. So replace the number in the middle IRQ#Priority with whatever your IRQ's are).
5. Double-click the first one you created for the CMOS IRQ, in my case IRQ8Priority, and enter the number 1 in the Value Data box to make this the top priority. Now double click the next one you created, for me this was IRQ12Priority, and enter 2 in the Value Data to make this the second priority. Do NOT enter the same priority number for two entries.
6. Close your registry editor and reboot.
YES. You can tell Windows how to prioritize everything using this, but I haven't tested every result, and you might cause things to actually run slower if you get too carried away with it. Also, I tried JUST prioritizing the trackpad IRQ, but it wasn't as effective as also prioritizing the CMOS along with it.
Hope this helps for you. It has seemingly fixed the mouse button issue on two N61JQ's I own.Attached Files:

I'm new to HDMI setup and i just wondering if N61 able to make HDMI video output as primary then extend or clone? And from what i read N61 should able to support v1.3 HDMI right?
EDIT: And what kind of resolution can N61 output? Example 720p, 1080p/i etc.
