you can make it whatever (primary, clone, etc...) It outputs 1080 as long as your monitor/tv supports it.

thanks man. I am an N61-x1 owner who was having the same problem. My left click would work intermittently. I have since restored windows 7 with a backup image i made shortly after buying the notebook. and im also using the older elan drivers the other poster mentioned a few pages back (he was having same problem too). The problem has gone away. but I will definitely try your fix in case the problem crops up again.

I'd reccomend to not try and overclock the N61 at all.. It already runs quite warm/hot at times, (especially under load) If you want to overclock you will have to use setfsb (or similar) and make it 1.83ghz. You won't see much difference but a little and the heat/battery life problem will only get bigger...

What game are you trying to run? I can test and fiddle around with it if you like?

Thanks a bunch, all i need now just a cable.

I played Oblivion just fine with med-high settings. Just don't use Anti-Aliasing with Radeon 5730 and settings from med to high would work good on most games. Also might want to set your Catalyst AI to Advanced setting or Off to make the game run smooth, but is highly depending on the game itself, i recommend you try both settings before decide.

Hi i have the asus n61j with the i7 740qm and ati 5730 and I was wondering if anyone has any performance tips/tweaks or the ati video settings I should use in order to play world of warcraft with max video settings good quality and decent fps. Please help out I purchased this computer this week and it is not running this game as quickly as I expected and i suspect it is due to software/settings issues and not hardware. Also my ati 5730 driver version is 8.692.1.0 please let me know if this is up to date, I am used to nvidia cards so I have had trouble finding the correct drivers. Please any help will be appreciated.

Your ATI driver is old so you need to update it.

Here are links to all the latest drivers in another thread here
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-reviews-owners-lounges/494250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html

I just started playing starcraft 2 and updating the driver to the latest ASUS-specific graphics driver helped a lot. I had trouble getting the generic ATI driver installed.

Yeah i noticed that too, and also the base of the laptop runs hot, whereas with the Asus specific driver it runs alot cooler whilst gaming. Just something i noticed, and the laptop generally runs a tad warmer with the generic driver.
Pretty sure with the generic driver there IS a small performance gain, it's not worth it really..

i think the new bios does a better job with the cooling profiles. make sure you guys download v212 of you do a lot of gaming with this thing. its technically not a gaming notebook but a multimedia notebook that can handle the occasional game.

I have an over heating issue with my N61JQ-x1. It happens about once a week the cooling fan doesnt spin up. If a open the back cover and give the fan a helping had it spools right up and works fine for several days. Any one know where i can find a new fan? I suspect it is just faiing, no issue with the Mobo or anything like that since i have to help the fan start. Thanks!!

Black Ops was on my Christmas list but, I did not get it. :( I got a $25 gift certificate for Chili's, which I see myself using soon. I also had a customer send me a gift. It arrived on the 24th. It was a really cool surprise. I got a NookColor. Yes, it is already hacked into a really awesome Android Tablet. Works fantastic!

Other than that, Abi got an iPod Touch from me. A Cruz Reader and the uDraw Tablet for the Wii. Since Abi's birthday is the same day as Christmas, she gets a ton of really great stuff! Yes, she is spoiled but, she is a great kid!

I play Crysis, StarCraft II and WoW on my N61JQ and don't have any heat issues. I have played Crysis for 6 hours straight and WoW all day. The cooling is fantastic on it.

What laptop do you have where you are having those issues?

I play Crysis with it on my lap mostly. I, obviously, make sure it gets good airflow. No laptop can handle someone blocking the airflow vents.

This is my first "non gaming" laptop. All of my older gaming laptops were either Dell XPS (before that line went to Alienware) or Alienware. Placing them on the bed or a couch while playing would make them overheat also.

Asus did a really good job with the airflow on the N61JQ. It is designed identical to my older XPS M1730. Multiple heat pipes and a good blower. The intakes are positioned nicely too.

This isn't considered a gaming laptop because it is missing the LAN party lighting, has standard sound and no sub-woofer, no backlit keyboard and a lower resolution screen. Well, at least those are the only differences between my friends Alienware "gaming" laptop and mine. Oh, his also has some special network card that improves LAN party performance.

Yeah i agree Davon, the other stuff is useless, and for newer games (the ones with 1920x1080 support) wouldn't really run well on a laptop anyway? Well that's just my opinion

Hi everyone. I'm considering purchasing the ASUS N61JQ-B2. I don't see anything posted about the B2 version. What's the difference between the A1 and the B2? The ASUS website doesn't specify a letter, they simply have N61JQ to look at, so I'm not really sure what the letter represent, possible model updates? I'm in college and play WoW moderatly during the school year, and this laptop seems like a good deal ($1200 at newegg). Do these laptops go on sale often; should I hold out and watch for a deal? Any problems I should know about the B2 model; there are no reviews on newegg...

    Thanks!

How much more improved can you get from 5ms to 20ms connections? Also, this might not qualify as a gaming laptop. But what does it mean if you are owning people who DO have gaming rigs? :p

Same laptop, just slightly better specs.
    i7 740QM which is 1.73ghz
    Blu Ray Combo Drive
500GB 7,200RPM Hard Drive (probably better then a 5,200 for performance.)

EDIT: Yes it's a good deal, if WOW will run well on this laptop. I'm unsure though, and it's dependant when this laptop goes on sale.. However when the next best laptop CPU comes out it will drop by alot i can bet.

caynan, the consensus seems to be that a notebook cooler won't help much, just elevate the machine a little (I prop mine up on my desk) to make sure the intakes are clear.

Hi, i would like to know if there's anyone here who is using this software to tweak their n61jq? Read & Write Utility

    RW - Read & Write

RW - Read & Write RW - Read & Write

This is a great utility for tweaking but i don't know how to use it.
this software uses hex code.... Probably you guys can give it a try (just to increase the multiplier of the processor or the front side bus) and guide us. tnx

Hey guys I'm going to get a memory upgrade from the current 4gb to 8gb.

    Here's the page I'm on:
    DDR2 1066MHz RAM | Laptop Memory | Ebuyer.com
    Which ones should I buy?
Strangely, the corsair one, although it should work withmy laptop in principle, when I use their memory configurator on the corsair website, my laptop is not one of theose listed...

Atook, thanks man.The problem is that after a while playing for example, beneath the notebook's left side, below the air outlet, gets very hot. And the battery is near that part, then you can end up decreasing the useful life of the battery. Even so, many thanks for the reply. And again sorry for bad english ^ ^.

Yeah, tell me if there's a laptop cooler that makes alot of difference..
I got a generic one off ebay for like $5 and it dropped about 1 degree on average.. Lower at times (so appears to be nothing)
And it rattled and made heaps of noise...
I'd rather have a few degrees then heaps of noise..

To some of the newer members here thanks for joining us. Now let me put my 2 cents in on to cooler issue. I started this lounge on february 3rd. I don't think I have missed many posts here since then. I have seen one person report a significant difference using a cooler. And to be honest I think he was making it up or just getting his readings wrong. Others could explain it better but because of the cooling design on this thing you will have almost no effect using a cooler on this laptop. My usual answer to this is if you have one what the hell use it. But don't spend any time or money trying to find the perfect cooler for this because you will be wasting both.
It's good to hear from you David & Professor Risco. I hope your holidays are going well. How is your recovery going David?

you are right Greg the effect is minimal with the cooler, but there is a difference of 2-4C, so if you people think that is sufficient then go ahead, i honestly do like the 2-4C reduced temp.

i am having a problem with my N61, and this is fairly recent, my computer freezes up when i have left the system running for a prolonged duration. the system seems to respond partially, when i move the mouse or hit a few keys and then it gets stuck for about 2-5 minutes.

initially i thought it had something to do with the hard drive, but now i am sure that is not the issue as i can hear it spinning.

now i suspect the Chipset, because its the keyboard and the mouse that fail to respond. anyone have any ideas, faced similar problems?

the Chipset is responsible for the keyboard and track pad right?

i have heard of people having issues with resuming the laptop from a sleeping state or a hibernated state and hitting a problem. but here the desktop is running constantly, never sleeps!

Edit: if i leave the system running overnight then i have to force restart the system in the morning for it refuses to resume. or i have to wait for over 10 minutes.

Quick question: Are individual keys removable on the N61JQ? Yesterday, I suddenly found that the semicolom-colon key was very stiff on the left side to press. At first I thought it was something stuck underneath, but there appears to be nothing there.

I want to remove the key, but I'm afraid prying it off will just break it.

Hi guys, new member and I have a question (or maybe a series of them) about the N61JQ-X1.

I got this laptop around late Feb/Early March. I could play modern games (Mass Effect 2/Just Cause 2) just fine for about 2 hrs (not that there was anything wrong with the system I just got tired of playing by that point).

Since maybe early Dec I've noticed that I try playing any game that pushes the hardware it would shut down after about 30 mins. I've been lead to believe this is an overheating issue.

Also, around the same time I've noticed that my laptop has been telling me to replace my battery. I'm not sure if the two issues are related or how they are affecting each other.

    So my question:

1.) Would Asus replace my battery or would do I need to shell out for a new one? (I do plan on contacting them either way but my searches for a place to buy the battery myself have turned up empty)

2.) What have people done to work around the overheating issue?

I don't know about the Battery problem, you could always ring them and ask. Oh and if you need to replace is try ebay but make sure it's genuine..

To start off with get a can of compressed air and spray inside the fans (after opening the back compartment).
Then spray the compressed air in the left side vent, from what i can figure it has 3 sections (for 3 heatpipes duh). And you should see alot of dust come out and your temps should drop!
To add i used anti dusting spray, this is a fair bit more then a can of compressed air..

Oh and to add nice chess idea atook :)
It was kinda slow but that's probably my internet speed :p

josh_am: I would think the battery would be covered under warranty if it's saying it needs to be replaced soon. Contact Asus and let us know what you find out, I've been curious about that.

Regarding the heat, Matt-Matts advice is spot on.

Yes, i'm not 100% on this but i'm using the backlit keyboard and i removed the spacebar key once because it was "stuck". So i assume the same goes for the normal keyboard :)

It is going well. I've got back most of the nerve damage so, I am walking normal again. The pain is still pretty high but, at least I can walk normal again.

    How was your Christmas?

    Hi Everyone,

I haven't been to this Forum in a while, this semester of school was bad. I was pulling 80 hour weeks between my school and work load.

Anyways I just got my Laptop back, it needed repair again. I lost video again and it had to be repaired. I'm not sure why but I think this repair might have been caused by a fall. Gotta love the ASUS warranty!

Looks like I have a lot reading to catch up on this thread again.

Yeah Asus warranty sounds strong, but their postal methods sound crap?
Every warranty service has a few horror stories, you get that.

And yeah, good luck with that.. I Joined when it was at about 550-600ish and gave up trying to read it all :p

I started posting when the thread was started, but it's been at least a couple months since I've posted :)

Well I've shipped this laptop twice this year, and in both cases it go to the repair facility within a day (ground shipping). It has always come back in great condition. It seems to take about 3 weeks for repairs.

I also shipped another older machine that was out of warranty and it was replaced for 250 within 2 weeks.

This has been one hell of a year for me computer wise. Before this year I've never had a computer die on me. However i had a 6 year old dell 600m and two Asus laptops die this year. I'm hoping next year will be better.
