You were post #16 in this lounge to be precise! It's good to hear from you my friend. What did you send your N61 for this time? Are you going to still hang on to this old thing for awhile or are you getting the upgrade itch like David and I ?

That's great news David. I drove a Bus all weekend and My wife had emergency surgery on her wrist for a severe case of gout. She might end up in some textbook because no one had seen or heard of anything like it.
I will PM you and get your phone #. I bought a couple Mytouch 4G's for my wife and I and I need some help with learning the world of " The Google". My first impression though is what an awesome phone! I'm Fricking playing with the thing in bed at midnight needing to be up at 5am to go drive a bus.

    Macbook pro free. Damm you!

IT was basically the same thing as last time, the video when out. However it wasn't StarCraft the caused it. I didn't even have a chance to play a game on this thing for a long time due to school. I'm holding on this machine until at least the summer 2011.

Even then I'm probably going to build a new desktop. I have a friend that works at Intel that can get me some good deals on some desktop parts.

If I have to sent it in again to ASUS though I'm going to have to contact someone at ASUS to see about it. It's 100% stable for me until the day it fails, very weird.

It's good to see you and David still in here posting :) I hope you both are doing well.

Does anyone know if there is any big difference between the X1 and the XV1 in terms of build quality? I ask this because these two are more or less the same price; yet the XV1 has the stronger CPU (i7-740 vs i7-720) as well as a bigger HDD (500GB vs 320GB). The X1 is on sale at Newegg for $999.99 while the XV1 is regular priced at $1019.99. The XV1 also has way less reviews on Newegg.

Whats the deal, because the XV1 looks to be obviously the choice between the two...

I'd Grab the VX1 if it's the same laptop.
I've never even heard of it before, but it has better specs and a bigger hard drive, the extra 130mhz probably would help because of the extent of how low it is to begin with.

There are many flavors of this laptop and they only change out specific components. The processor, memory, hard drive, wireless, ... but the core stuff is all the same (mainboard, case, ...).

If you want the extra horse power get it. I have the A1 model with the 500GB hard drive, it is nice to have the extra space.

I ran a few temperature tests with CPUID (see attached PDF). The difference is @ 2-degrees on average.

Cooler: Cooler Master Notepal U2 Notebook Cooler with Two Fans R9-NBC-8PBK-GP. The fans on this unit are pretty quiet (to me).

    Hi,

How to change hyperthreading or cpu settings with the n61jq?

I press F2 on startup to enter AMI Bios. There are no advanced setting options for cpu configurations.

    Thanks.

Windows 7 is reporting only 6.92GB of my RAM is usable via the system information . However, I have 8GB of ram in this system.

    Is this normal?

I was skeptical of the 5730's gaming prowess, but it's handling every game I throw at it @ native resolution on medium settings or higher without a problem. ME2, Bad Company 2, Just Cause 2, Tropico 3, and others.

Very impressive for how inexpensive the N61 is

And to think that the new sandy bridge i7's that are coming out put this one to shame and have amazing battery life. All that is missing from this laptop is battery life and if the new N61's have the new processors with at least 3 hours of battery life, I'll be selling this one.

    hi

I have a n61jq-xv1 from amazon. it is suppose to have 2 memory slots but when i ran siw on it, it sais that there are 4 memory slots. i ran everest as well and it didn't said how many slots there are but the memory is in slot 1 and 3.
i opened the cover under the laptop and saw two memry cards in two slots.
can it be that there are more memory (maybe under the keyboard)?
also i've been having problems connecting to public networks, can anyone tell me how to diagnose the problem?

    thanks

I've been having a problem with my webcam. Basically, it doesn't work.

When I first got my laptop, ~6 months ago the webcam worked fine for about the first week or so. Then it suddenly flipped upside down, so I found this website and followed some suggestions but eventually my webcam wouldn't display any picture. Just black.

I thought it may have been something I did, and not really needing a webcam, I just let it be,

Well, now I've done a fresh install of Windows 7, and updated to the latest drivers for my webcam and it STILL will not display any image. My hardware ID is USB\VID_13D3&PID_5122&REV_0202&MI_00 and I've downloaded the Azureware drivers, so I don't know what the problem could be.

Any suggestions? It can't be something I did to the software, I don't think, because once again, this is on a clean install of Windows, and it hasn't worked from the get-go.

kmac11: I posted either in this thread or the drivers thread about this. The thing is to NOT upgrade the driver for the webcam. Search for posts from me about webcam drivers and you should find instructions on finding the older driver, and stepping the drivers back.

I looked at all your posts from the last year or so and didn't see anything regarding my new problem. My problem now is that the webcam won't display ANYTHING. It appears to be on (the light flashes) but it still outputs no image. The only posts I found from you are referring to the problem where the camera is flipped.

Of course, unless I am missing something (as previewing your posts only lets me see the first sentence or two, so I could have easily skimmed over it).

    octeuron,

I mostly run on an external monitor to, one of the things I found out the hard way is that the cooling system pulls air through the keyboard, so running the machine with the lid closed is not recommended.

I've heard of problems with a high pitch squeal, usually when running on batteries. I don't know that there's been a solution that doesn't include sending it in for warranty.

Hmm. I did that, even used the same driver version. Nothing seems to be working. I'm beginning to think this may be due to a hardware error. I need to send it in for repair at some point anyways because some stupid girl dropped my computer and chipped a large portion of the screen anyways (the webcam had stopped working prior to this, so that can't be the cause).

But anyways, thanks for trying to help. I added to your rep.

If anyone has any other suggestions that don't include simply deleting the drivers and re-installing them, I'd love to hear it.

In response to the "Squeaky Noise" problem. Mute your speakers, and see if it stops..

If so i have the solution for you!
Well basically it's not a real hardware issue, and it is easily fixed.
Firstly open "Realtek HD Audio Manager", then select the microphone tab. In here you will see the "Recording Volume" slider, and a "Playback Volume" slider. Turn the "Playback Volume" off, by clicking on the button to the right of the slider. Btw your "Recording Volume" should be on full.

My understanding is you should never ever run your laptop with the lid closed. Almost all laptops draw some air through the keyboard.

    Hey guys,
Recently got my laptop back from ASUS after the repair. I used it to set up the wireless at my house and was successful. However, I moved back up to my college dorm today and I don't have Internet. Well, I do, but it's not cooperating. The network and sharing center tells Me I'm connected and have Internet access.. But when I click on firefox or IE, the page cannot be displayed. I've reset all the settings in IE(not that I use it, firefox is my default) but to no avail. When I run diagnostics I get this message: the remote device or resource won't accept this connection. I've tried running command prompt as admin and tried netsh winsock reset. Nothing works, I need some Internet here lol.

    Any help is appreciated.

I am thinking about selling my N61JQ-X1 and getting the B1. I just found out the webcam isn't working after reinstalling the entire OS. I may order the new one and send this one in for repair or I may just sell it. Not sure yet. She still runs great so, I may just keep her for a while.

A quick question: When you output this laptop to a 1080p TV, is the resolution 720p or 1080p?

I wonder if it is safe to run this laptop for several days without sleep.
Sometimes I need to encode a lot of videos in batches, and it runs full-load for 3-4 days with high temperature (CPU 85-90C & Radeon at 78C). I wonder if I could melt something in there.

Serville; I would think it would be fine, those temps aren't too bad (I've had my graphics card up over 100C). Someone here indicated that they'd edited/rendered a full length movie on the machine.

Yes it should be fine. Those are safe temps for the machine to operate at. Similar to when I was rendering the final parts of the film.

Sense nobody else chimed in on this. No intel always changes the socket and chipset for a new core design and on the last die shrink. I am sure they have their reasons/excusses.

I just installed a second HD (Intel X-25M 80GB) into the CD drive bay using a caddy from newmodeUS. Works extremely well and i've fitted the original CD drive cover. If anyone needs info / pictures just give me a yell.

Where is this info from? Install SpeedFan or HWMonitor and check the temps of the rest of the system. Can you hear the fan running?

i was updating windows 7, trend anti virus and downloading couple of other softwares last nite and i hit the sack.

i haven't even entered the bios setup yet but i've checked that i'm running BIOS Version N61Jq.206.

any help tips, guides and tricks is GREATLY appreciated.

You have a faulty battery, should not be at 71% wear level! You could try calibration. Enter the bios with the laptop unplugged, and let it run out. Then fully charge and check the wear level again.

I was curious about other people were getting for temps after gaming. The only game I really play is SC2! I usually play for 30 min to 2hrs at a time. My CPU gets up to 100C. That seems really hot. With just running my internet browser its usually between 70 and 80C. Any suggestions to keep the heat down?

    Hey everybody,
Here is a blast from the past for the old timers here. Also maybe some of the newer members here could chime in on this.
A few months ago Asus changed my Motherboard from a botched Bios update.
Ever since then everytime I use the recovery partition I end up not being able to validate that windows is genuine. Asus just directs me to Microsoft who so far has validated it for me. But it is a royal pain, I don't know how many times they will do this, and how can I ever sell it like this.
Another member Risco had this problem also. Has anyone else changed their motherboard and experienced this? Anyone have any ideas for a workaround to this?

    Windowless in Seattle ! :(
