Were you running any GPU load at the same time? 90 C should be fine for the CPU, and I assume the GPU was much cooler at the time.
I assume the laptop crashed during the burn test and never recovered?
-
GPU temperature was not that high, which was about 75C.
-
hey Testate Ill battle you in sc2. I have the same laptop on order just to play sc2
-
what do you guys keep your brightness at? I do 85% gamma for all colors on my ati setting and 75% lcd brightness via windows power options on ac power.
-
I could be mistaken, but I think only the N61Jv has a USB 3.0 port. Has anyone here check USB 3.0 function with a 3.0 device and verified it? Just asking because I need 3.0 and I hear some other 3.0 laptops are not working as advertised (runs 2.0 regardless)
-
I did not have any 3.0 devices so I could not check.
-
When I run SIW it lists the following on my N61JQ:
NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller
I don't have any USB 3.0 devices to connect to it, but at least the hardware seems to be there... -
If the USB 3.0 sticker next to the port isn't a dead giveaway, the NEC 3.0 Controller in Device Manager is. ;-)
-
I just looked on New Egg there are 3.0 devices but nothing really useful for me yet. Hopefully the flash cards come soon.
-
I haven't gotten my system back yet. (in fact, it reached the service center today) However, I'd like to know if anyone has used a docking station with this system and found favorable results with any one in particular?
-
Yeah, thanks, just an amateur here. What I was hearing from the Dell crowd was they noticed several of the just built models have the NEC 3.0 controller chip but the chip can't be activated in the 3.0 mode by the OS. The bios seems to be able to enable 3.0 but the OS gives you an error. I dunno, something about needing an i7 processors to handle the data rate... or perhaps driver issues... but then I could be hearing wrong and 3.0 is new, at least in a laptop. These were models not advertised as USB 3.0 compatible. So it seems like just having the NEC chip is not good enough.
I'm going to take a nap for a few weeks and come back to see if anything shakes out. I saw some 3.0 hard drives, was thinking someone here may have tried one for grins. -
Here is a writeup that Toms Hardware did about USB 3.0. As drivers mature, performace will improve and the CPU utilization will become minimal.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/usb-3.0-performance,2490.html
I contacted Dell before purchasing the laptop and they told me that it couldn't have USB 3.0 because no mobile chipsets support USB 3.0 yet. The guy I spoke with said that the USB 3.0 support meant that it supported an addon card for USB 3.0. Obviously, he didn't have a clue. -
As far as I've heard eSata will still out perform USB 3.0 for Hard Disks.
-
Yes. As for right now, it will. We had a discussion about it a ways back.

Testate, Thanks for your contribution for the Gaming Review section on the first page of this Lounge. Yours is the first review posted. Now I need more reviews from you gamers for me to post. Just post here any gaming performance information that you would be looking for if you were considering buying this laptop. Then I can post it on the first page.

Okay guys, I got an issue. When I try to enable my wireless/bluetooth, I press Fn + F2, and the little screen shows up at the bottom that shows that both are disabled. If i press the buttons again as the guide says to do, nothing happens. I can't figure out how to force it on manually. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling my drivers. Am I missing something obvious?

^--^
There is a hardware switch on the left side, at the front. Make sure it is turned on. -
Ah, that explains it. First time I've ever felt old. Thanks!
-
I realized the other day I was getting old loserboy....when I was walking around in Lowes and I told myself..."Wow I love this store". LOL. I just turned 27

anyone can comment on the batt life of the n61jv?
-
Nope, wrong thread for the N61JV I'm afraid. This is the n61JQ thread. That being said, battery life will probably vary depending on use but has the potential to be better on the N61J. First, the N61JV uses a i5 processor that draws less power than an i7. Second, the N61JV can automatically disable the graphics card to save power without any need for user intervention (Nvidia Optimus tech). I remember reading some minor criticisms that the n61JV power savings weren't at the levels expected but I think in most situations, under the same workload the JV will beat the JQ in battery life.
-
ummm i read somewhere that they wanted to consolidate all the n61 threads into this one so i just posted here.
What batt life are you getting with the JQ? -
Here is what I am getting on my JQ.
Battery Test Results (By allyw123)
Screen factory settings-Surfing
Wireless USB Laser Mouse (should effect results)
Windows power plans
1: High performance- 1:55
2: Balanced- 2:12
3: Power saver- 2:30 (without wireless mouse) / 2:12 With wireless mouse!
Power4gear power plans
1: Power4gear Entertainment- 2:09
2: Power4gear Battery Saving- 1:58
3: Power4gear High performance- 2:03 ( Without wireless mouse)
4: Power4gear Quiet Office- 2:15 -
Wow battery saving is lower than high performance?

Here is the latest on trying to get to the bottom of the 9 cell battery GenTech is offering for the N61.
Greg W wrote:
You list a 9 cell battery at $189 for the N61JQ-A1. I did not know ASUS was providing this battery for this laptop. Is this a misprint or can I buy one of these from you?

Hello Greg,
The N61, M50, M60, G50 and G51 are build by the same chassis, they share the same battery. yes you can buy from us if you want.

Ken, Does this battery stick out the back and if so wont it stop the screen from opening on the N61JQ? Or is it thicker and require another lid for the bottom?
________________________________________________________
Greg,
Yes it does stick out to the back about 1 inch, it won't stop screen from opening and it's not thicker. it fits just like 6 cell but longer.

Ken, Sorry to keep bothering you but we are still trying to clear this up for the N61JQ Owners lounge in Notebook Review. Here is a post that shows the battery won't work on the N61JQ because of the sunken hinge on the screen which is different than the other models this battery fits. http://forum.notebookreview.com/show...postcount=2172

Greg,
Hmm.....that's interesting, none of my customers told me that but let me find out on Monday.

Greg,
Found out we are out of N61Jq to test the battery, I'll have wait for the next shipment which is first week for April, I'll let you know how it goes.
Ken -
Well this is not scientific and you have to read the results carefully because most of the tests were done with a wireless mouse which lowers the result. The high performance test you mention is without the mouse so that explains the difference. Basically you can say that you should expect to get about 2 hrs on battery. And you can make some adjustments if you want to get a little more. But 2 hrs for an i7 is pretty good.
-
X1 owner here too.
I play on a 24" BenQ E2420HD and it's indeed a bit inconvenient for looking at the mini-map in SC2.
I set everything except Shaders to High and portraits 2D, kept on 1080p res and get around 30fps (Ctrl + Alt + F for FPS in SC2). Runs it pretty smoothly
My bnet username is nihonjon.tokyostyle
I also suck it up in the bronze division
I use a Zalman N2000 cooler and nowhere on the laptop does it ever feel more than slightly warm.
Runs Team Fortress 2 full specs on 1080p res with ease. Counterstrike Source as well.
EQ2 & EQ1 also on full settings and without a hitch. -
I'm seriously considering purchasing this laptop but I need to be assured of the performance in Bad Company 2. I'm strictly interested in maximizing FPS. With that said, can anyone tell me the performance of Bad Company 2 set in directx9 with all settings set to low/off (multiplayer). I would GREATLY appreciate it.
-
I'm sorry, even if they don't intend on it. It sounds like stalling to me. But I hope they prove me wrong and show a fully working 9 cell in this machine and that would be great
A good 4-5 hours on this machine would make this the one to have. Hands down.
-
BC2 plays very well at a mixture of med/high settings at the laptops native res. Textures High, shadows and effects medium, HBAO off, 2xaa 8xAF. Very smooth.
-
I've been playing BC2 on my external 22" screen: 1680x1050 with the default settings (most stuff on normal to high). No hickups, I love it.
-
I prefer the Kensington Contour series. Has many excellent features and as a bonus has lifetime warranty. For example check out the split handle-simple and elegant.

I posted this info in another thread but here are my futuremark scores on an external monitor:

@allyw123- How about putting up an FAQ for switchable graphics. Because this has HM55, some people might have this question.
what do you think? -
nihonjon, Welcome to the Lounge! It's good to here from Japan. Where did you buy your N61? Thanks for the review I will post it on the first page in the Gaming review section.
-
Ok done Wishmaster. Now how about you pull the trigger on one of these!
-
do the new 10.3 catalyst drivers give you guys gaming improvements over the stock asus drivers?
-
Some posts have mentioned improvements. As the 5xxx series of cards is still relatively new, I think keeping up with new drivers is a good idea.
-
i'm like the new lenovo Y560 that came out today and i like that rapiddrive technology on it...It's a hard choice NOW
-
All the hype on the Y560 and I knew that they were low balling the price estimates. On the Lenovo site they list the i3 for $1100, the i5 $1200, and the i7 for $1400! The specs on the i7 version of the Y560 looks almost identical to the N61JQ. What draws everyone to the N61 is the price.
Lenovo makes a good product and the Y560 is an appealing model. But they should have came in at a similar price or offered a better screen than the N61 as was rumored or assumed by many.
Nice laptop yes. " Hard choice NOW" I think not!
-
I don't doubt it will run Bad Company 2 decently. But again, I am interested in the specific performance pertinent to the previously mentioned settings (dx9, all low/off).
-
On a side note I just wanted to say that anyone who like me wondered if Bing cash back is for real I can report it is. When I ordered my N61JQ from Newegg I ordered it through Bing Cash back. It was only 2% so I only got $20 but I was skeptical that I would really get any money back. It takes 60 days and I did get my $20. I have another $250 coming on other purchases some at 20% cash back.
-
opps del....
-
60fps + at those settings easy.
-
i get 60 with medium so with everything off and low should be wayyy higher
-
Update on RMA: Asus has received my notebook, however, they are waiting for parts for the repair (the CSR couldn't tell me exactly what parts those were but I'm guessing it was the graphics card).
I really hope that its only because this is a new notebook that parts are limited, one would think they'd have this stuff in stock already. -
Finally bit the bullet and ordered an N16JQ-A1! Now to patiently wait for it to ship.
-
Congrats Driden!
-
i'll pickup my n61jq by friday. i'm excited.
-
with which tool do you overclock your 5730? i am using the newest catalysts 10.3 mobility - msi afterburner doesn't support the vga!?
