what about sonic master feature? Does the laptop really have it or is just a false advertising. I noticed many people complain about the sound.

This is what I used.

AMD GPU clock tool.
Don't expect great results as with mine I can only push my memory up to 875~ before it artifacts. But the core can go up to 780~. -
What is the sonic master feature?

Mostly marketing BS. In my experience, ASUS doesn't use cheap speakers so they won't sound like crap. If you want good sound from a notebook then you should invest in some decent external speakers or headphones. Practicality and sensibility dictate that any speaker you cram into a notebook chassis won't sound as good as a dedicated speaker system.
In other news, my N61 ships tomorrow. I hope to have it by Monday or Tuesday.
P.S. Time to order a drive caddy as well. Anyone with experience care to confirm they work and the part number? -
It won't sound as good as a dedicated speakers. However, in my opinion, the sound from the n61 sounds better than almost all of the notebooks I've owned. (Toshiba always has the best because of harmon/kardon and I'm only basing my decision on the ten minutes I used the notebook before it died
)

Just purchased an x1, i will write a review after using it for a week or so. I expect something great

Y560 has the newest i7 Arrandale with switchable graphics, which N61JQ lacks. That alone sets around $300 difference.
Interestingly, Newegg has offered Y550p for only $899.99. It's $100 drop from the previous $999. Now, that will be a very good alternative to N61JQ. -
Where did you order from? I'm still waiting on back order and seriously thinking about switching if I can find some place that has it in and is in the same price range (<$1100 for the A1).
-
I just checked the Lenovo site. Nowhere does it mention switchable graphics technology. Lenovo demoed a notebook from the T series with Optimus graphics but I don't think it's available for sale yet.
With virtually the same hardware at the same price points, the choice between the Y550p and the N61JQ comes down to the details. Design, keyboard, reliability, bundled software, manufacturer's warranty, availability and brand loyalty. -
I've been on backorder for weeks as well. Systems are still trickling in, be patient. You cancel now and you risk being pushed to the back of the queue at the new retailer.
-
they are back in stock at newegg. got mine quick from them.

the Y560 uses the very same i7 720qm processor as the Asus N61. That processor DOES NOT have integrated graphics and therefore switchable graphics is virtually impossible unless the manufacturer uses a chipset with integrated graphics as well as a "switchable" dedicated GPU.
-
any updated on the HD caddy performance guys? I forgot who it was that bought one. Did you run benchmarks on it???
-
powernotebooks.com has the A1 for 1065.00 I think. It is a very good site to order from. Donald will be able to help you with any questions you may have.
-
Well, it DOES say Switchable Graphics for Y460 & Y560 series , which is consistent to their prior announcement about the new series . But yes, I didn't notice that their specs still read 720QM. Don't know if they come up with a solution. They claim to use 2010 i7 processor though, which I assume Arrandale. I don't know which one is true.

The current generation of i7 chips do not have integrated graphics. Intel is suppose to launch a new i7 later this year which will have the integrated graphics on board. No integrated graphics, then it's not switchable whether or not you have nVidia or ATI card inside.
It looks like the Y560 has both the i5 or i7. If you get it with the i5 then it will have switchable graphics. If you took the N61JQ and put an i5 in it, then it would have switchable graphics as well. -
FWIW, the Y550P had an i5 processor with the integrated GPU but used a PM55 chipset (switchable graphics only works with the HM55 chipset). I verified with Lenovo.

isnt our machine better than this ?
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Alienwa...lack/9693464.p?id=1218150607452&skuId=9693464 -
The laptop is a 17" model, which means it is a bigger laptop. The graphics card is better in that model, but I'm fairly certain the i7 is better than that quad core, but they are close enough. The price however is way more. You can buy two N61JQ's for the price of one of those. I'd sooner go for the G73. Alienware is usually overpriced.

We have them in stock and ready to build & ship.
-
i7 that is switchable is ! Wonder how much this will increase the price...wonder if they will discontinue the current i7s. Also wonder why they did not include the current i7 with switchable graphics.
-
i remember the manual saying the n61jq has switchable graphics. but they were also wrong about the 5 ghz wireless card.
-
The i7 was first. It was followed up by the i5 and i3. The i5 and i3 are basically an i7 with two cores removed and in their place the graphics chip. The new i7s (yet to be released) are a die shrink (I believe) so will have all 4 cores and the graphics chip. The desktop models I've heard have 6 cores. There is also a version of the i7 with only two cores, but I haven't seen any in the wild yet. I guess the Y560 could have one of those. I don't really understand the difference of the i7 with two cores and the i5.

Why oh, why does Intel make their naming and numbering of the chips so darn confusing. -
So that you'll never know that they were dumbing down or upgrading the same piece of technology 50 times over. Plus...big numbers used to sound better. However, since the advent of laptop, big numbers are powerful, little numbers are mobile friendly
-
Just out of curiosity, why does the screen look like it's set to a color depth below 32 bit? For instance, when I'm in a game, say Dawn of War II, the fog of war looks washed out. It's not smoothly shaded.
-
Man look what you have started here. i7 720qm = no switchable graphics. If you want to get an i3 or i5 go for it. Yes switchable graphics is a nice thing to have but how much are you really going to use it. And you would pay $300 just for switchable graphics? Really? The Arrandale is not out yet and who knows what that will do to pricing. Technology will always improve so if you wait for Arrandale then 9 months later something else will improve.
The Y560 is nice if you want to choose it over an N61, personally I wouldn't.
But the Y550 at $899 " a very good alternative to N61JQ". I think not!
-
Just to add to what Greg said already, it has a nVidia 240M GT which is a much weaker video card than the one on the N61JQ. It also does not have a USB 3.0 port, if that means anything. Overall the N61JQ is a more powerful machine, however that is a good price and if gaming/graphics performance and USB 3.0 is not a big deal then go for it. It also has a slower drive, didn't even notice that. Pared with an i7 I don't know if I'd go for a slower drive, it is usually the biggest bottleneck for everyday tasks.

Hi guys,
I just got my laptop today, and I accidentally deleted the Multi-Touch Touchpad software
. So, now I cannot use 2 or 3 finger Multi-Touch anymore.
Can someone help me to get the Multi-Touch Touchpad software back please? I tried recovery to a previous time, but it doesn't work. Does any one know if I can get the software anywhere?
Thank you so much -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Have you looked on your drivers disk for it. Just put the disk into your optical drive, let it self start and it will show you what is not installed.
-
Heh. I think that was one of the first "hot topics" in this thread. I love how all of the old discussions are coming back again.
As for my opinion, the Y550p may have a bit better something then the N61... for that matter, there are many laptops that are better then the N61 for 300 or 400 dollars more. The charm of the N61 is all of the "bang for the buck". You get a heck of a lot for a little out-of-pocket. I got mine shipped to my house for $999. 2 months later, there is still nothing better for that price.
To sum this up: if I wanted to spend $1500 on getting a laptop shipped to my house, I probably wouldn't have purchased my N61. I think I would have wasted my money though. -
Ya, I tried that too, but it didn't work.
The software is a DST or something with an icon of a hand and a 4 arrow crosses. It didn't have any description on it, so I thought it's a game and deleted it. Now I cannot use Multi-Touch
.
Help me please~ -
Try using the recovery partition to restore your laptop to its origional configuration. You can find instructions for this on page A-13 in the manual. You can find the manual by going to programs, asus utility, emanual.
-
David, I don't even think it was this thread. I think we hashed this out in the previous X1 Lounge. I know you are a supporter of everyone having a right to an opinion here as am I. I just don't understand why you go to a lounge and try to prove to others that another computer would be better. An Owners Lounge should be for owners with reviews or questions, and prospective buyers doing research. Not a place to list all the computers that are better than this one. Just go buy your other model and start another thread where you can debate the pros and cons of it there!
-
Risco, Thank's for the driver update. Since Asus never seems to list any current updates on the support page, what is the best way to find out about driver updates like this?
-
Thanks a lot. I used the reset recovery which restored to factory condition.
-
which would be the best place to buy from now? I am indifferent between the x1 and the A1. Please link me up to the cheapest yet reliable places.
Thank you -
btw, is i tjust me or is xoticpc still showing backorder for N61?
PNB and gentech seem to show it in stock.
Also, a quick question to paladin44 - can you please elaborate on 'Ask about our Special Discount for AK, HI & APO/FPO Addresses'. Thank you! -
double post...

Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Since we don't offer free Ground shipping to those locations, we offer a special discount instead. Submit your order and see the discount depending on your configuration.
However we don't sell to people with Avatars like yours
-
good one, there!
-
How do you install these drivers . Is it just run the setup.exe ? thanks
-
Oh! good, you ship internationally ?
but which locations you are referring to ? Is it rest of World except USA ? What if something goes wrong with the laptop and we want a replacement ? How can we send it back to PNB and who will bear the shipping cost to-n-fro ? -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
All of those addresses are US addresses. I am sorry but until we have enough supply to fill orders for the ASUS G73JH in the US, we will not be shipping it internationally...if ever.
-
wishmaster you need sexy avy like mine!
-
Lots of great info here so I'm happy to be here too!
I ordered my N61 on Amazon for $969 and had family ship it to me for about $80 which took 4 days. The i7 notebooks here are all pretty expensive so it was worth it

Hello,
As many people out there I'm interested to buy an N61Jq. However, I would like to have some users advices on the level of *heat* which this computer produces. It is rumored that this laptop become hot when you are gaming or running other high-demanding applications for a long period of time.
Can anybody tell me more details?
Is the laptop only becoming hot around a specific area like near the fan? Or is it the whole computer that produce too much heat so you cannot longer use it on your lap for example?
Thanks! -
For the limited time I had my N61JQ-A1...the only area that would get a little hot would be near the exhaust. It was not hot enough where you could not put it on your lap. It might be a little warm. Also, this was only during intense gaming. Normal stuff you should have no problem.
-
My N61-A1 is peeling on the edge of the palm rest. I don't think it from the bag rubbing. Under the coating is actually glossy and not matte finish. If the entire palm rest starts to peel, it will look pretty ugly =)
-
The first time I sent mine in was because of this. There seems to be a design flaw on the palm rest IMO. We have other members of the board with the same problem.
