Did you ever get that high pitched sound fixed? I am hearing the same noise and I thought it was just me.

I am having the same issue, which started at the corners an have worked their way into the front edge. Probably due to using my laptop backpack daily. Has anyone called Asus about this and will they repair it?

Yes, if you call ASUS Support they will issue an RMA to return it for repair.

I sent in my laptop because of the peeling...well and some other things my first RMA. I do not find it acceptable for a 1100 dollar laptop to peel within one week. My peeling was pretty bad compared to other people though. and I did not remove it from backpack daily or anything like that.

I have only had to manually uninstall ATI drivers once in Win 7, on my desktop PC. I installed a Catalyst update for my TV tuner card which somehow caused the device type to be changed to a different type. Since the newer driver (Unified AVStream) actually made my card perform worse than before, I wanted to reinstall the old driver but wasn't able to since it could not identify my now-changed device ID in the list of supported devices in the driver (I have no idea how this happened). Removing the card in Device Manager and doing the old safe mode/Driver Cleaner Pro routine allowed me to install the older driver.

If you do a lot of driver tweaking, messing with registry settings, etc., you may benefit from a cleaning (I think some settings may persist from one version to the next, which may create problems). If you never touch the settings, like me, a plain over-the-top install works.

Unfortunately Ramen, I had to send it in a 2nd RMA for other issues but for about 3 hours I did not notice any peeling lol :(
The 2nd lid enclosure they installed looked to better quality than my first one though.

I have a feeling it's going to peel again due to wear and tear. The coating is pretty comfortable, but I'd rather not have it if it's going to peel at some point. BTW, whats the turn around time for repairs?

First time I sent the laptop off...it was back very quick...like Week and a Half at most. Now I am waiting on parts not related to the peeling and it may be there a while.

Alright! So I just got my laptop a few hours ago from UPS! Haven't tested it very much yet, but before I go too far, I just wanted to ask is there is anything I should download first? I haven't had any problems, nor do I want any.

Well Tony, that is the understatement of the century! I can't believe how bad yours peeled.

Mine is still very minor. Now that I watch how I hold it, it isn't progressing much at all. I am thinking about getting my soldering iron warmed up and, without touching the laptop or getting too close, warm the plastic to see if I can get the film to smooth out. If I can get rid of the pieces that are sticking out and can get caught on things, it should help stop the peeling process quite a bit.

It is some kind of power management issue. You need to apply the mic fix by doing the following:
    1. Right click the sound icon in system try
    2. Choose recording devices.
    3. Click properties of the microphone.
    4. Check listen this device.
    5. Choose realtek digital output.
Problem should be solved then, however your computer will not auto-sleep with this option enabled. Same thing happened on the Sony Vaio F. I notice it particulary when iTunes is open it makes the noise all the while it is open and idle. It seems to be linked to the touchpad, as each time I press it the noise happens.

Make your restore DVD's before you do anything on the laptop. It will take around 4 DVD's and about 2 hours to complete. In my opinion, it is the most important thing to do.

Once that is done, there are some benchmark apps that will really put some stress on your system. I use 3DMark and PCMark on my of my systems to test them out. I am sure the guys in the thread will have better apps to recommend.

I also recommend not upgrading your drivers for a few days. Once you are sure that your system is running well, feel free to update them then. This way if you have issues with the system, you don't need to worry about the drivers being an issue.

I also recommend the same strategy with anti-malware applications and the "bloatware" apps. Don't mess with the included software until you are comfortable that your system is running correctly.

Think of it this way, it sucks having to restore the system to factory. Leaving it alone for a few days takes no time. ;-)

I have tried that and I still had the same issue. I know it is a driver issue because I removed the driver and the touch pad now works fine, but I can't disable the touch pad since I no longer have the software. Anyone know a way to set up the hot key to disable the touchpad without the driver?

Anyone who gets crashes, upload your dump here

    http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed

It gives you a clear indication of where the error is coming from. Also will help me and other decipher the issue. I was able to narrow down ram issues for someone on another site just by looking at the crashdump results fromm there.

Ally - Could you put that on the main page? Indicating to people to use that site when their system crashes then post there results here.

I've been using a different philosophy with my A1. I did a fresh Win 7 Pro install, minimal ASUS software (only Wireless Console 3 and Express Gate) and all the latest drivers (i.e. non-stock drivers). I did disable the ATK Media and ATKOSD2 drivers.

I haven't been gaming on the laptop, but it has been running crash-free.

Ok so we don't turn this into a Sony F series or HP DV-whatever lets be a little more specific. If we are not carefull reporting noises people will jump to conclusions and all of a sudden you have a mountain out of a mole hill. Once I can determine exactly the extent of your noise problem I will post it in the issues section of the first page.
Given that a computer is a machine with moving parts it will make some sort of noise. I will say that compared to most laptops I have used I would describe the N61 as whisper quiet. But if I concentrate on it or put my ear up to it I can hear some noise. Does it concern or bother me in any way? Not at all. So can you describe how loud it is. Does it bother you. Is it louder than an average Laptop?
I am not trying to invalidate your posting in any way. I welcome all reports of problems so that as a group we can try and get to the bottom of it. But I hear a noise, and I hear it too, does not give us much to work with.
We have had a few others report this before only to later say that its really not loud and maybe they were just paranoid from a previous laptop(Sony F series!). If your noise is really bothersome I think there is a problem with it based on all the feedback we have had so far. I wonder if hearing a noise on the left side is because of the air vent ?

Thank's Risco I will post it.
Now you have either stumbled on to a fix for a Mic problem. Or you have opened up a giant can of worms for a problem that doesn't exist. Do we really want to open up the Sony F series mic workaround for the widespread squealing they were having on that model? This is what I was worried about when someone says I hear a noise. Some of us in this forum looked long and hard at the Sony F series but had to pass on it because of the noise issue. My opinion is this is not the Sony F series and that mic work around should not apply to the N61. And if this is needed there must be something wrong with that Laptop. But since the worm can is open lets roll with it and see where we go. :D

I put my ear up to mine for a while and could not hear anything. After a while I think I heard the N61 say , "What the eff are you doing?!". Needless to say, I stopped. ;-)

I think one thing that we may want to do is start grabbing some system information from an application that can look at the systems hardware and installed applications. I am wondering if there was a batch that was built with a different set of components or an application that can cause some of these issues. If we can find a common app for use to use, it may help. Just a thought.

After we start grabbing some of the N61's system information, then what will we hear the N61 say, "Screw the sony F series?". :D

perhaps my high range hearing damage is the reason but I mostly hear the hum of the fan. I can pick up maybe a slight trace of a squeal but looks like I won't be bugged by this :D.

(btw: my check cleared! Woohoo! Hopefully I'll have it in my hands by the end of next week.)

Fudge. First bsod. Somebody look to this one. I have no idea what caused it. I was gaming a while ago. Then after 5 minutes I tried putting this thing into sleep, then boom, bsod.

    Here's the dump.

    http://www.mediafire.com/?zdbrejnnmq0

EDIT: I found this one. Bluescreenview. Apparently it showed that the crash was caused by the graphics driver. What is this? Heating? or something?

I've had experience with 3 different components squealing before.

1: Power supplies, cheap power supply bricks will sometimes produce an obnoxious squeal. I have been informed that this will not affect their performance but it is a pain in the . Fix: Replace the power supply.

2: speakers. Interference from other devices can cause the speakers to buzz. In my case the problem device was the trackpad, using it or moving near it would cause the hum. It was only really noticeable with external speakers plugged in. Solution: Try a different combination of audio and trackpad drivers. Or, use an external audio card. Or, use an external mouse and disable the trackpad.

3: fans. Fans with loose bearings can produce a whine or hum. Loose bearings can significantly wear out the components in a fan leading it to a slow and painful death. If you sure it's the fan, then it needs replacement. Solution: RMA and get the fan replaced.

4: CPU. I've been reading about notebooks, in particular Dell and Apple models that produce a whining noise when the CPU is in power-saving mode. Google "cpu whine" to learn more. Solution: Replace the whiny chip or disable power-saving mode on your notebook.

Has it happened only once? If so I would not worry, if it keeps happening make sure DX is updated, uninstall the driver and reinstall.

Do not EVER user driversweeper to clean the registry. It has consitently broken my system when I have ATI cards inside.

If the problem persists, and if you're using the generic Catalyst 10.3 driver from ATI, you might try the latest ASUS driver (V8.692.1.0) here. ATI normally recommends drivers prepared by the laptop manufacturer over their generic versions (unfortunately that means you usually have to wait longer for the newest revision).

Sorry men, you've no idea what are you talking about. I uninstalled/installed display drivers in my old laptops with the steps of uninstall -> reboot -> install. I never went into the safe mode, no generic display drivers were tried to be installed by windows (in fact windows recommended to find some display drivers). Never got any BSOD.

I think the risk for overheating should be null. At stock clocks there should not be any issues, otherwise then the laptop as not well designed.

In any case, I've gamed for a while and found no issues of overheating.

What's the gpu temp you get? Mine peaks 89-91C. Yours is equipped with i5, I just don't know if i5 and i7 produce same amount of heat. But I assume i7 produces alot more. I get cpu temp as high as 85C. What's yours?
