    Update on My RMA:

Now, im pissed at ASUS. They said that they are gonna replace the LCD. But, they said that I'm gonna have to wait until the last week of April for the LCD replacement to come and they would still have to repair it then. They didn't even offer me a replacement or nothing. Now. i'm starting to regret sending my notebook for an RMA. The thing is practically new, now i'm having a Horror story with their repair service. This sucks, I've only used the notebook for a couple of weeks, now it's gonna take more time to repair it compared to the time I was using it. This just ruined my day. I was hoping to get it back really quick. Now, I'm having buyer's remorse, really great computer, but horrible experience with ASUS. This notebook life cycle sucks.

oh not good bro....I am in the same boat they are prob replacing my LCD also....and this is my 2nd RMA. If I do not get my laptop back until the end of April.....it would place me having the laptop for 3 months and using it for only one week. I need to call and check on RMA.... :( At this rate I would have better luck putting 1100 dollars on black / red at a Casino :(

I bet the long waits from the RMAs are related to the supply shortages.

    So close now:
New status: Phase 2 (Sent for Custom Building / Testing / Burn In & Final QA) 3-7 Business Days

I only upgraded the thermal compound so I should be getting it around middle to late next week?

Friday: open, apply ICD7, close up, test?
Saturday?: test (if not tested on Friday)
Monday: test (if not tested Friday or Saturday), ship
en-route for 3-4 days via UPS Ground

    :D can't wait

The ATI Kernel Mode Driver basically caused the Windows NT Kernel to crash. It could be an anomaly. It could be a badly written app. It could also be that the ATI chip hiccuped, which could have been from many reasons.

bad news :(....just got email from Asus on RMA.

    Dear tbrocato,

We are apologizing for delay in repair your laptop because we are waiting for a motherboard shipment. We already ordered the motherboard and shipment will come in next 2 weeks.

At first I thought I just had trash in screen....then bam no screen activity...this will be my 3rd motherboard for this laptop...counting my first one. 1st RMA they changed out the motherboard also. I must have the worse luck ahaha. One good thing is I am currently 170 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and I will not be home until 2 weeks from now so!

I read somewhere windows memory score is kind of jacked up on how it gets the actual score....forgot where.

UPS slapped me with a rescheduled delivery. So much for having the weekend to play around with it. It sucks that the package made it over half way across Canada in less then 12 hours and now it's taking almost 72 to get it the rest of the way....

Gotta love being in Newfoundland. :p

    Hello Risco,

I tested it for you. :)
With only one memory module installed (i.e. 4GB ram only) the memory index score drops down to 5.9.

So it seems the score is more dependent on the amount of memory.
The strange thing is that there is another owner of N71JQ that has 6GB of RAM and he also gets a score of 7.4.
Maybe 6GB is what windows 7 thinks necessary and 8GB is overkill.

    You are welcome. :)

The original 4GB RAM was not enough for my work.
I am using Ubuntu under VMware at the same time I have some applications running under windows 7.
With only 4GB of RAM, this combination was causing the RAM use to go to 95%.
Now with 8GB of RAM my N71JQ is much happier. :D

Thats why I think Windows Index score is not that good judge. Its all about the amount of ram...nothing else it seems like.

That is why I don't care much about the windows index score. For me the important thing is to have a powerful machine for my work. :)

    Anyone know if any DDR3 1333 memory will work with the N61Jq? Does it matter if it is PC3 8500, PC3 10600, PC3 10660 or PC3 10666?

The first batches of N71JQ also had 1333MHz ram.
Mine came with the 1333 ram, but the new ones are coming with 1066MHz ram.

I think ASUS was short on the supply in the beginning which made us lucky. :D

Now that I have 2x4GB DDR3-1333 Samsung M471B5273BH1-CH9 ram, I will sell my original ASUS 2x2GB DDR3-1333 ram on the ebay.

Just received UPS confirmation. Scheduled date of delivery is the 15th. :D

I wonder if I should take a day off so I can wait for it at home.

    or...

Say I know the UPS truck usually comes around the neighborhood at around 5PM. Just because the pkg requires a signature doesn't mean it's gonna show up early or gonna be on another truck that swings by earlier, right?

    hi there, i'm a proud owner of a n61vn ^^
i'm just wondering, can you remove any key from the keyboard? how so? just pull? push up and then pull?
my number 2 and number 3 from the numpad to the right are kinda weird...so i was thinking about removing them to see if there's anything wrong. they register just like the others, but they have a different feel (kinda like...stuck).

    thanks in advance everyone :)

After playing 1 hour of The Witcher the highest the CPU goes is 64°C, iddles around 53°C. I know it is not a stress test but that is the CPU under load.

For the GPU mine goes up to 63°C under load by the AtiTool artifact program. Just for a note, with my previous laptop with the 8600m GT the same routine gave me like 72°C. I should say I'm impressed how the GPU temps can be kept lower.

How long have you had it and if possible, can you exchange or return it? I know you ordered it from the Middle East so a return might be a hassle from the Philippines, but if you have the opportunity, why not exchange or return it and get what you want.

Well if I'd had the option I'd have gone for the JQ model. In any case, you should not worry for the temps, I doubt ASUS would've designed a system that can't withstand running its components.

could anyone please take a screenshot of HWmonitor when playing a intensive?
I would like to see the the temps of CPU and GPU when under a heavy load.

I have a g51jx, and this gpu gets wayyy to hot. like 95 deg celcius when playing heroes of newerth or gta IV. resting my hand next to the touchpad results in minor burns when playing games. also this has other problems such as freezing and bluescreens. So i am RMAing it and looking for something more reasonable.

also, i only was able to read thru like 50 pages of this forum, but why only 1 year warranty?

    N61JQ-A1 = 2 year warranty
    " -X1 = 1 year warranty

Both have 1 year of ADW (Accidental Damage Warranty)

    (from page 1 FAQs)

Greg: I think there should be a FAQ for avg temperatures for different activities, or at least a range of temp (Low - High).

My Dell XPS M1710 had a replaceable video card and processor. They moved the line to Alienware now. I wonder if they are still replaceable. I think it is the M17x or something like that.
