I would have to disagree that Optimus requires a special chip. I have a friend that works for Intel and he had to figure out how nVidia was doing what they were doing in case they were using some of Intel's IP. Basically nVidia's drivers intercepts the OS calls to the Intel drivers and does a little software magic, there is no special chip responsible for making this happen. The things you need is updated nvidia drivers and an integrated Intel graphics chip. FYI with nVidia implementation it is possible to run both the intel GPU and the nVidia GPU at the same time, although I don't believe it is being used that way.

I've got all the worthwhile updates and the laptop is running fine. I'm even using it on our 52" LCD tv right now. This thing is awesome. I'll write a more in-depth review later on this week. -
Edit: direct link -
I still think the idea to draw the power from the LCD source is nice, here is where i found it.

I am sure that AMD is hard at work duplicating or improving Nvidia's Optimus, to ignore its impact would be suicide. I wouldn't be surprised if they announced their own gpu switching solution in conjunction with the release of their 32nm CPU+IGP chips in 2011. -
Has anyone found a solution to the 9 cell battery situation as yet? Have we gotten any confirmation that Asus has made a 9 cell that will suit this laptop?

Hey guys, just wanted to say I'm throwing my hat into the ring here! I placed my order for the A1 model from TigerDirect yesterday and it has already been prepared for shipping! I'm going to be doing a reformat and clean install with my copy of 7 pro (followed by all drivers and a couple utilities). Then I'm boxing it back up and gifting it to my girlfriend. I got her into pc gaming 4 years ago, and since then she has been a real trooper, playing source game, unreal 2, WoW, etc on a GMA 950! She is the only person alive who can headshot in CSS at 6 FPS. It is finally time for me to give her the best! Say hello to max settings and 60fps!!!

Now, since Tony owns post #2. He may be able to use that for "Unofficial Items - Use At Your Own Risk". If someone uses them, has an issue and tries to complain, Tony can drop a dumbbell on them. HA! -

Donald sent me an email yesterday and let me know that he is finally caught up on his laptop builds and RMA work. We are going to connect next weekend. I would love it if he could use a multimeter on a G60 (or another computer that has the back-light working out-of-the-box) so we can compare some of the info.
Also, I think I am going to pick up another keyboard so I can dissect it. Depending on price, I may get another hard drive so I can do a clean install without worrying about losing my data. I have wanted another drive for my PS3 anyway. -
I've installed the non-Asus drivers for the touchpad. No problems to report. It's working as described, though I need to turn down the speed/sensitivity a bit.

Hi, I'm sort of a lurker here in the lounge and I recently bought my N61JQ-A1 and its been working well. However, I have been having some problems with my BFBC2 map loading times and I have updated to ATI catalyst 10.4. I also have not done a clean install. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks.

OK. I am not expert on knowing the MSI jargon but, I forced the installer for the hotkeys to write a "mega log" to see if there are features disabled via the machine. Here is what I found:

Thanks for the help guys, maybe the directories for my bc2 and ati drivers are not properly located/extracted? Since the laptop partitions it so weird, i first installed BC2 on the D drive but later on I uninstalled it and just extracted and updated it to the default C drive. Also, i have both an AMD and ATI folder, was wondering if maybe somethings conflicting? thanks again

Ok, it seems that after a lot of playing around, The Catalyst manager has disappeared from my programs all completely. Should i do a fresh install of the ATI drivers and is there an appropriate link? ( Or can i just directly reinstall the 10.4 beta)

HI everyone,
does anyone hear a high pitch sound coming from the laptop sometimes?
when I watch a video or something, the sound goes away. -
Damn, from that framerate, this machine's gaming capabilities will be simply outstanding -
Does anyone here own a Spider Pro calibrator? Would be nice if someone could post a calibrated profile!
-
Yo stevedogg, do you know which card reader driver to update to
, since your the man at this?
Edit: nevermind, I think I found it, v1.8.1217.36096 -
I have no beef with you stevedogg and whatever you think about a post like that is ok with me. But no one will change my opinion of it. -
-
IMO, the ban for vostro was a big overreaction, as web forums go (I have seen much much worse trolling), which is why it was lifted.

All kidding aside, I don't think you guys are going to see eye-to-eye on this one. It's okay though. I can see both your sides and neither of you is wrong. -
hey guys, can you please tell me how the power adaptor looks like?
I mean does it have 2 pins or 3 pins? a pic of the wall-socket end of the cord would be really nice.
Thank you! -

To those of you downloading drivers from the third-party sites (or downloading any EXEs for that matter), you might want to try this trick: many EXEs are just self-extracting ZIPs; you can try opening them directly with WinZip or WinRAR or IZArc (I use IZArc). Generally, when I download these drivers, I just rename the file from *.exe to *.7z and open with IZArc. You should be VERY hesitant to run any EXE you download online. -
thanks for the useful picture link, stevedogg.

Go ahead, prove me wrong wishy!
David that was a great idea about Tony posting the driver updates. Lets see if we can talk him into it. We need to keep him busy before he starts throwing dumbells around while thinking about his RMA. -
-
Does anyone have a 64Bit decompiler? I currently use RecStudio but it crashes on 64Bit binaries.

Besides, Tony needs to put down those weights. He is making me look bad. I thought I was finally starting to get in shape and then he comes along! I am going to buy him a large bag of chips and a WoW account. That will get him out of shape fast! HA!
Also, I think we need to fix Tony up with a new woman. I was thinking either Little Debbie or Sara Lee. -
to what email address should we "complain" to Asus for the lack of an extended battery? I would like to "complain" as well.
-
-
. I didn't bother uninstalling the old one; the installer properly overwrites the old version.
In my earlier post, I didn't mean to imply that you should install drivers by "updating" in Device Manager; what I suggested was just to open the EXE archives. Once you have verified that the EXE is an archive that contains the setup files you need, you can (probably) safely run setup.exe or whatever you need to install the driver. -
For you guys who are interested in the latest bios of N61JQ, there is a new bios version v208 available.
I am posting here a link to the related German forum, where I asked about a bios of N61JQ and N71JQ.
The poster of the link works for ASUS support team in Germany and he owns the forum asustreiber.de where he uploaded the latest bioses for both N61JQ and N71JQ.
On this website the bios is in the zip format and the change log is provided.
http://www.asustreiber.de/forum/50-driver-bios-a-tools/29544-n71jq-and-n61jq-bios#29597
As usually, if you want to flash it then do it at your own risk.
This post is for information purposes only. -
Edit: BTW bios 208 added to support page globalfirst update in a driver forever lol, guess it must be important.
-
Before he was every day at his personally created forum (asustreiber.de) uploading new stuff and forwarding user problems to R&D, but lately he is only there once in a week or so.
He rarely responds to the user requests.
Before, you could ask for a new driver or bios and within few hours you could get it.
It seems that other members of the ASUS support team that used to upload stuff to that website are also not helping anymore. I don't know what the problem is.
It's a pitty that such a great forum before is becoming less important now. :confused2:
It was lucky that he uplaoded these bioses. -
I've had my N61 for about a month now, and its been sitting unused because I dont want to scratch its shinny surface...
Just wondering what are you guys using as a case/sleeve to protect it? Not many 16" sleeves around...
