On 207, hitting Fn + ESC would hang the system. This is corrected in 208.

You can update directly from any bios to 208, scias.

So, I have "acquired" some new x64 tools. Even though Assembly is the weakest of all my languages, it looks like the drivers make calls to the BIOS to see what functions the computer has. I may have a way of reading the BIOS files, I think. If so, I may be able to make a little more sense out of all of this.
Although, trying to read this code is no different then my trying to read Spanish. I can make out a few words here and there but, I can't fully tell you what context they are being used in. Usually, I get the essence of it and can follow though. -
Lately it has been getting worn out from pulling it in and out my bag so I took a roll of clear packing tape and covered the whole sleeve. No more wear n tear problems now -
Going to start cutting down some more. when I have veins coming out of my lower stomach is when I will stop cutting down- need skin over steel for beach. Oh yeah bro...I will hook up my 2nd post with the latest driver information in the next couple days.

I bought a Tucano Nine Dot sleeve for mine. It's a simple sleeve with an internal fold to secure the laptop from sliding and shifting. Fits nicely with no wiggle room. No external pockets to carry accessories though.

He is a member of ASUS support team in Germany.
Kurim already mentions below his profile picture that he "Arbeitet für ASUS" which means in english Working for ASUS:
http://www.asustreiber.de/forum/50-driver-bios-a-tools/29544-n71jq-and-n61jq-bios#29581
I also know his real name. -
I have asked both Kurim and Ken Lee to report it to ASUS.

I have been looking for something that works in Linux and can't find one there either. Since I many of the tools I use read the system's information, virtual machines are out. Linux would be great and having them run in a 64Bit OS is the best case.
Anyway, if you (or anyone with this kind of technical skill) is in the US, shoot me your number in a PM and we can see what we can work out.
Is there a newer version of BNTBTC then 6.1.20080913? I know mine is kind of old but, I couldn't find a newer version. I do have IDA Pro Advanced x64 but, without decompressing the BIOS first, it is just an over-glorified hex editor. -
-
WinHex is a powerful hex editor that I know will work under 64bit. Here is the link for more details:
http://www.x-ways.net/winhex/ -
Basically, I have been extracting the drivers from the cab files using MSITools:
http://www.installsite.org/pages/en/msi/tips.htm
Then I have been using IDA Pro Advanced to check out what the files are really all about:
http://www.hex-rays.com/idapro/
If anyone else wants to help out, the links are above. Yup, just above this paragraph. Don't even have to be too technical. You could just be offering another set of eyes. Yup... just in case... ya want to help. I'm not forcing anyone. just sayin'. if you want to help... ya could. It could be some good experience. yup. Experience... to help... umm... for your future. Yup, if ya wanted. It would be nice. To, umm... help.
I'm subtle. HA! -

Just updated to firmware 2.08. Besides the FN + Esc crash, what other updates have come with this?
-
"Fix using function fn+ESC that system will hang"
We know what the second one is, but I don't really know what the first one means. -
Cool. Thanks for the information.
Anyone knows what support this system has for 5.1 surround sound speakers? -
FYI: I work a full time job, am a single parent to a 10-year-old daughter, am dating, have my own OS and just started a small side business. I think I come to the thread to escape. HA!
Oh, that reminds me. The arcade auction is next weekend. I CAN'T WAIT! I am looking for a Galaga/MS. Pacman machine. I want to put it right next to my Gyruss machine. I have a Stun Runner and a Tekken Tag I may bring to the auction. If they get decent coin, I am going to pick up a commercial Multicade. Either that or I am converting Tekken Tag or my Zap machine into a Multicade.

I hope this is not off-topic. In the past I've had very good experiences with Asus laptops, but this is frustrating me.
Setup:
- new laptop came with W7 Home Premium, I formated and installed W7 Enterprise x64. It came with a Portuguese language keyboard and w7 installation, which I replaced with an english install on a portuguese keyboard, as I did several times before with other laptops.
Problem 1:
Left Control + (Left) Alt + Del doesn't work. However. Right Control + (Left) Alt + Del Works. If I log in and try out the left control key, for example to copy and paste text, it works fine.
Problem 2:
The @ key. This is usually done, in the portuguese keyboard, by typing AltGr+2, but nothing happens when I do it. The 2 works fine, the shift+2 works fine (yelding "), but AltGr+2 doesnt type the @. So the 2 key is working.
I used the SharpKeys tool to remap the menu key (between AltGr and RIght Control) to 2, and now if I type AltGr+Menu Key, I get a @. So the AltGr key is working.
Also: if I type AltGr+5 it works and yelds . AltGr+3 (pound sign) and AltGr+4 (paragraph sign) also don't work.
Do you have any idea as to why this might be happening (any of the two issues)? I think I installed all the drivers in the Asus site, and quick-fixed it by mapping the menu key, but I have no idea what to do next so solve this.
I also have all the windows updates installed. -
-
Now, go ask them if they can add the back-light support into the BIOS for us. While you're at it, the overclock option isn't a bad request either. ;-) -
Hi,
I've found a way to reduce the whining noise coming from my n61. I hope this helps someone. I went into windows 7 power options, not the power4gear one, you can access it by clicking on the battery icon and selecting more power options. From there, go to additional power plans and select the default balanced plan. I think this plan changes the power management of the 720qm so it reduces the whining noise. I hope this helps! -
I'm definitely available for questions until this semester ends in mid May. After that I'll have enough time to get back to hobby programming and can write some code. -

Hey guys it's been a while but I've been super busy with school lately, haven't really had time to post. Should be doing work now but I've had enough.
Anyway thanks Greg for getting in touch and wondering how I've been doing with my N61. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. My main concern was the low resolution, and I must say it hasn't bothered me one bit and I can't say there was really a time where I missed the extra pixels.
Unfortunately, I haven't really had much time to game on it since I first got it, but what I have thrown at it it's handled perfectly. I played Empire: Total War for a while on it and it ran everything at high settings with no real problem with heat. I was pretty happy about that.
Another thing that I love about it is the Wireless-N. It's not like I was unsure about the speed of the technology or anything but I just got a new router and when I'm close to it it gets very near the same speeds I get with a wired connection.
I haven't looked back since getting this and I don't see it happening. I hope everybody else is having as much luck with theirs as I am with mine!
Btw, nice job on the front page Greg. I remember last time I visited there was some work to be done but that's a great source for newcomers. Wish it was there when I was researching it. -
Speaking of which, has anyone tried undervolting this processor as yet? -
All-in-all, I like Java. Especially because making an app cross platform means a class or two to account for handling hardware differently in the OS. -
Anyway, there was another user on here that also looked like Rainn Wilson. His name was brochiller also. It is really a strange coincidence. I would have thought that you were him except that he vanished. Since we are too awesome to ever want to leave, you can't be the same person!
HA!

Did you upgrade your wireless card and are you connecting at 5.0 ghz now? If so can you notice the difference? Don't be a stranger with a lame busy with school excuse!

Speaking of which, like I asked before. Has anyone found or done any 5.1 surround sound solutions for this machine? I notice this only has 2 audio ports as opposed to 3 in the n71.
Also, has anyone successfully undervolted the machine? I see in the Dell forums someone has created a program to undervolt the i7 720 in one of the dell computers. Here is the link: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5637647#post5637647 -
And yes.. the school excuse is lame. -
