On 207, hitting Fn + ESC would hang the system. This is corrected in 208.

I've been using the white foamy thing that came with the packaging since day 1. Maybe you could use that if you can't find good sleeve. hehe :D

Do I need to upgrade to 204? Or is upgrading directly to 208 fine?

I carry it around in my backpack all of the time (I'm a student) and I picked up an Init 16" sleeve (it's a sort of strange olive color) from best buy a few weeks back for about $10. It fits pretty snuggly and I can't really complain for $10. It does seem to have stopped my peeling issue since it loads width-wise (hamburger-style, you know what I mean...) :p

You can update directly from any bios to 208, scias.

So, I have "acquired" some new x64 tools. Even though Assembly is the weakest of all my languages, it looks like the drivers make calls to the BIOS to see what functions the computer has. I may have a way of reading the BIOS files, I think. If so, I may be able to make a little more sense out of all of this.

Although, trying to read this code is no different then my trying to read Spanish. I can make out a few words here and there but, I can't fully tell you what context they are being used in. Usually, I get the essence of it and can follow though.

I too have been using the white foamy thing as I couldn't find a sleeve i wanted to purchase.

Lately it has been getting worn out from pulling it in and out my bag so I took a roll of clear packing tape and covered the whole sleeve. No more wear n tear problems now :D

I bought a Tucano Nine Dot sleeve for mine. It's a simple sleeve with an internal fold to secure the laptop from sliding and shifting. Fits nicely with no wiggle room. No external pockets to carry accessories though.

Getting ahold of a tool capable of disassembling the bios would help. I expect keyboard information might be contained in the DSDT section of the BIOS where various ACPI information is kept. I'd suggest checking there first. You can load alternate DSDTs under Linux so you can test any changes you make to the code without having to flash the BIOS.

Unfortunately, this same problem exists in N71JQ also and the latest bios v205 I linked before does not solve it. :(

I have asked both Kurim and Ken Lee to report it to ASUS.

WinHex can be used to read the bios file but I think it is not a free tool. :(

If you can find me an application that will do that in a 64Bit OS, I will love you. Unfortunately, all of the tools I have for working on an AMI BIOS either crash or can't load the bios file. The rest just error that I need a 64bit version.

I have been looking for something that works in Linux and can't find one there either. Since I many of the tools I use read the system's information, virtual machines are out. Linux would be great and having them run in a 64Bit OS is the best case.

Anyway, if you (or anyone with this kind of technical skill) is in the US, shoot me your number in a PM and we can see what we can work out.

Is there a newer version of BNTBTC then 6.1.20080913? I know mine is kind of old but, I couldn't find a newer version. I do have IDA Pro Advanced x64 but, without decompressing the BIOS first, it is just an over-glorified hex editor.

I am not familiar with WinHex. I use PSPad for hex editing and IDA Pro Advanced for decompiling and analysis. I wouldn't mind adding another tool if it can do something I can't do already or do it better. What is WinHex?

I don't if you wanted to read the bios is hex format or you meant to decompile it.
WinHex is a powerful hex editor that I know will work under 64bit. Here is the link for more details:

I grabbed the downloadable version to try it out. Not sure if it does anything more then what I have but, there is only one way to find out. Thank you for the info.

Basically, I have been extracting the drivers from the cab files using MSITools:

    http://www.installsite.org/pages/en/msi/tips.htm

Then I have been using IDA Pro Advanced to check out what the files are really all about:

    http://www.hex-rays.com/idapro/

If anyone else wants to help out, the links are above. Yup, just above this paragraph. Don't even have to be too technical. You could just be offering another set of eyes. Yup... just in case... ya want to help. I'm not forcing anyone. just sayin'. if you want to help... ya could. It could be some good experience. yup. Experience... to help... umm... for your future. Yup, if ya wanted. It would be nice. To, umm... help.

    I'm subtle. HA!

Well, it does have some neat little tools. It is a decent hex editor and its memory reader is a nice tool. I can see myself using that in the future.

    "Update CFD MRC to 1.3"
"Fix using function fn+ESC that system will hang"

We know what the second one is, but I don't really know what the first one means.

It's okay. I don't expect most people to be as geeky as me. I do this stuff to relax.

FYI: I work a full time job, am a single parent to a 10-year-old daughter, am dating, have my own OS and just started a small side business. I think I come to the thread to escape. HA! :D

Oh, that reminds me. The arcade auction is next weekend. I CAN'T WAIT! I am looking for a Galaga/MS. Pacman machine. I want to put it right next to my Gyruss machine. I have a Stun Runner and a Tekken Tag I may bring to the auction. If they get decent coin, I am going to pick up a commercial Multicade. Either that or I am converting Tekken Tag or my Zap machine into a Multicade.

I usually always working on a hobby programming project for fun too, but once I started grad classes I had to give it up during the semester. School kinds of decides my projects at the moment. Tonight I'll be working on building a neural network that can play a java implementation of Mario Bros.

I can't imagine being a single parent and doing all that. Without my wife I think I'd go insane :)

I pm'd Asus Customer Care on this forum about the 9 Cell battery. Here is the reply

No flat out denial that they will not release one, but at the same time it confirms that there is not one available.

Also regards the MRC update for the bios, seems more likey a stability and compatibility update.

I hope this is not off-topic. In the past I've had very good experiences with Asus laptops, but this is frustrating me.

    Setup:

    - new laptop came with W7 Home Premium, I formated and installed W7 Enterprise x64. It came with a Portuguese language keyboard and w7 installation, which I replaced with an english install on a portuguese keyboard, as I did several times before with other laptops.

    Problem 1:

Left Control + (Left) Alt + Del doesn't work. However. Right Control + (Left) Alt + Del Works. If I log in and try out the left control key, for example to copy and paste text, it works fine.

    Problem 2:

The @ key. This is usually done, in the portuguese keyboard, by typing AltGr+2, but nothing happens when I do it. The 2 works fine, the shift+2 works fine (yelding "), but AltGr+2 doesnt type the @. So the 2 key is working.

I used the SharpKeys tool to remap the menu key (between AltGr and RIght Control) to 2, and now if I type AltGr+Menu Key, I get a @. So the AltGr key is working.

Also: if I type AltGr+5 it works and yelds €. AltGr+3 (pound sign) and AltGr+4 (paragraph sign) also don't work.

Do you have any idea as to why this might be happening (any of the two issues)? I think I installed all the drivers in the Asus site, and quick-fixed it by mapping the menu key, but I have no idea what to do next so solve this.

I also have all the windows updates installed.

I should get you helping with andLinux. I am going to rewrite the communication sockets between Windows and Linux in Java. Or, I may do the Linux side in Java and the Windows side in C#. Since most C people hate Java, most of the help offers I get are C enthusiasts. I need some Java help. Do you know Java or is it that your application uses a Java app?

That is a nice find. Thanks for the info. I was wondering what that meant.

Now, go ask them if they can add the back-light support into the BIOS for us. While you're at it, the overclock option isn't a bad request either. ;-)

    Hi,
I've found a way to reduce the whining noise coming from my n61. I hope this helps someone. I went into windows 7 power options, not the power4gear one, you can access it by clicking on the battery icon and selecting more power options. From there, go to additional power plans and select the default balanced plan. I think this plan changes the power management of the 720qm so it reduces the whining noise. I hope this helps!

I work in Java all day long, primarily doing web development. I just happen to get luck and the Mario AI stuff was implemented in Java ( http://marioai.org ). Most of the coding I do for school is in C/C++.

I'm definitely available for questions until this semester ends in mid May. After that I'll have enough time to get back to hobby programming and can write some code.

Hey guys it's been a while but I've been super busy with school lately, haven't really had time to post. Should be doing work now but I've had enough. :)

Anyway thanks Greg for getting in touch and wondering how I've been doing with my N61. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. My main concern was the low resolution, and I must say it hasn't bothered me one bit and I can't say there was really a time where I missed the extra pixels.

Unfortunately, I haven't really had much time to game on it since I first got it, but what I have thrown at it it's handled perfectly. I played Empire: Total War for a while on it and it ran everything at high settings with no real problem with heat. I was pretty happy about that.

Another thing that I love about it is the Wireless-N. It's not like I was unsure about the speed of the technology or anything but I just got a new router and when I'm close to it it gets very near the same speeds I get with a wired connection.

I haven't looked back since getting this and I don't see it happening. I hope everybody else is having as much luck with theirs as I am with mine!

Btw, nice job on the front page Greg. I remember last time I visited there was some work to be done but that's a great source for newcomers. Wish it was there when I was researching it. :)

If its one thing about this laptop I love is that I no longer hear the CPU whine like I did in my previous core 2 duo laptop. However, thank you for the solutions if ever needed. I normally keep and run my laptop on the balanced profile, both AC and battery. I find it gives me ample power and battery to suit my needs.

Speaking of which, has anyone tried undervolting this processor as yet?

That's funny. I work with a bunch off different languages but, lately I have been working in Java. Normally, I write for hardware but, I have been tasked with writing a POS system in Java. So, that is now my main project and the hardware is secondary.

All-in-all, I like Java. Especially because making an app cross platform means a class or two to account for handling hardware differently in the OS.

Welcome to the thread brochiller and congratulations on your purchase. Has anyone ever told you that you look like Rainn Wilson?

Anyway, there was another user on here that also looked like Rainn Wilson. His name was brochiller also. It is really a strange coincidence. I would have thought that you were him except that he vanished. Since we are too awesome to ever want to leave, you can't be the same person!

Lol. Once we finish editing our feature length film (one of the computers being used will be this one) I'll give you just that. ;)

Speaking of which, like I asked before. Has anyone found or done any 5.1 surround sound solutions for this machine? I notice this only has 2 audio ports as opposed to 3 in the n71.

Also, has anyone successfully undervolted the machine? I see in the Dell forums someone has created a program to undervolt the i7 720 in one of the dell computers. Here is the link: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5637647#post5637647

I did upgrade my wireless card to the Intel Advanced-N 6200 card. Can't say I can compare that to the stock card though as that's what I ordered when I purchased it from Xotic. As for 5.0 ghz, I really don't know. I know my router supports it, but I'm not sure how to check which band I'm connecting with right now. If anybody can help me out with that I would like to know.

And yes.. the school excuse is lame. :p

If you open your network and sharing center there should be some type of label for your wireless connection that you set up with your router. You should have a different label for your 2.4 & 5.0. At least on my router you had to have a label for each.
