As usual you are the man Risco!![]()
I posted this in the driver section and gave you the credit you deserved.

Edit: Doesn't seem like the actual driver is any newer (I just checked the version in device manager and in the install files; it's still 6.0.0.1179). I'm not sure what this upgrades
Edit 2: The driver version is the same (SYS file), but the services (UNS.exe and LMS.exe) are newer.

stevedogg, check the ahci driver located in IDE ata/atapi controllers, that is what the other one updates.
-
Can you do me a favor and check Task Manager to see if "LMS" is present in the Services tab please? -
-
Edit: it also upgrades the UNS.exe service. Do you have that one as well? -

I can confirm it in that I did not see it either until after I had installed ATi 10.3 drivers, thanks to ??, found the post, to stevedogg -
Has anyone else noticed that alot of the originally installed drivers in device manager are dated 2006 ?

Currently, I am working with Ken Lee from Gentech to get solution from ASUS to two problems with N71JQ.
- Fn+ESC keys make N71JQ hang completely.
- The fan in N71JQ is ramping up and down (100rpm/3300rpm) all the time especially when notebook is idle. -
No update on the keyboard. I am buying a Neo Geo cabinet and a MAME cabinet so between that and the HP sale (less then 14 hours left), I have been tied up. Here is a link to a new driver: http://sale.images.woot.com/Intech_Rippa_Driver_460cc_with_Graphite_Shaft32fDetail.jpg
HA! -
Speaking of Tony, what's up Bro? -

Neo Geo and MAME, I'm jealous... -

Ha, ha, ha, I fell for that, great one David

Anyone got GTAIV? It is stutter every two seconds here, can't figure it out? I did try the memrestrict but with no luck?

Mine was caused by the way I sit back in my recliner when I use the laptop. Since I sit on a angle, the laptop would slide to my stomach and rub up against my shirt. Even though there isn't any additional pressure I am putting on it, the weight of the laptop would cause enough friction to cause the peeling.
It looks like just the thin laminate was peeling on mine. With the pieces that bubbled, I pressed/rubbed the air out of them and kept my finger on them for quite a few minutes. That seemed to get them to stick. With the pieces that peeled and left a small tab, I cut the tab off by rubbing where it was still connecting (at the point of peel) using an ultra fine sandpaper (okay, it was my daughters nail buffer). Since there weren't any tabs that could get caught and pulled, I think that helped as well. I have no idea if this will help your situation but, it did help mine. -

I am running an ancient Dell Inspiron 8200 wt 15.6 screen and resolution of 1400x1050. Of course I cannot run games on this antique but the display is fine for productivity apps and browsing.
I am finally ready to purchase a new laptop and had settled on the N61JQ since it has USB 3.0. Now I am considering waiting to see what the N63 looks like. -
The high-res display is awesome for video and for regular use (tons of screen real estate) but not really for games. -
Hey guys, I just got my N61JQ and when i turn it on I can hear (to the right of the touchpad) noises which I think is the fan scratching on something. It doesn't sound normal to me and my friend, who has an identical n61JQ has no "fan scratching" noises when his is on.
I don't know what to do =/ This is my second unit as the first one they gave me was opened and used... now the second one has these fan noises.
Should I be contacting Asus or the seller for another unit since I've only had this laptop for less than 24hrs
thanks in advance. -

Works Very Well

Pros: This machine performs exactly how I had anticipated.
The hardware pushes most new games at high settings while maintaining a good frame rate - 60 fps. Game titles would include: Bio Shock 2, Aion, Left 4 Dead 2, Plants vs. Zombies, and Fall Out 3. The only game that has really pushed the machine is Battle Field: Bad Company 2; although the game looks great and runs great on overall medium settings - on external 1680 x 1050 Asus monitor.
Really happy with the i7, was a little wherry at first since it has a low clock speed but has done well. The USB 3.0 is rad, purchased a Rosewill external the does great.
Cons: The keyboard flexes a little around the WASD area, not a big issue though.
Glossy screen, and not LED back-lit, lid back cover isn't brushed metal like older 'N' series models.
Other Thoughts: The multi-touch takes a little getting used to, still not as clean as on a Apple.
Overall nice design on the chasis. Love the palm rest material, shows a lot of oils but nice feel.
Restore disks included, machine does come in a goofy partition setup.
Would like to be able to purchase a 9-cell battery so I could get more than 1.5 hours gaming battery life. If you go into the Catalyst Control Panel you can turn off the dedicated Graphics to pull around 3 hours.
Also the 32Mb cache 500GB 7200RPM Seagate drive doesn't fit this machine. I was sad faced.
Machine was Aquired from Newegg through my place of work.

can you guys hear your HDs at all? If so, how loud is it?
-
On my N71JQ, I heard a buzzing sound on the right side of touchpad.
I found out very soon that the source was the primary 320GB@7200rpm drive.
It was generating lot of vibrations.
Basically, it was defective.
I sent it back to ASUS and now I have a new one from them. -
Yeah, it was a buzzing sound. I managed to get a full refund after 3hours going to Asus then back to seller because he didn't believe that the HD/ however I explained it to him wasn't defective. It was my second unit too. (Had to get it on paper that the HD was defective).
Probably going to look for another laptop in the coming weeks. -
Some people also have reported stuttering in games due to ATIs PowerPlay feature ... maybe try turning that off in catalyst. -
Hey guys, im still in shopper mode here, but ive been watching this one for a few months (still hate i missed out at $966 on amazon). So ive noticed the reviews have been drying up over there, but there was finally a new one, and they were really ticked about the palm rest falling apart. Curious to see what you all have to say about it since they were really ticked off. Anyways i have some more amazon gift cards coming so im going to be working my way towards a laptop purchase fairly soon. I have my eyes on playing starcraft and being able to play all the current games. Thanks, i found you all a few weeks ago!

I went ahead and created a new thread to try and help clear up some of the clutter in here. http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/479873-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html

Can you guys recommend a good tool to measure cpu and gpu temps? thx

Anyway we have had examples of this before but when you say that you had to return 2 of them it is a little misleading. One of those you returned because the box was opened which has to do with your reseller(who you didn't mention) and nothing to do with ASUS or the quality of the N61JQ. -

We are waiting for reviews to come in from some of the new owners that have checked in here lately. I'm assuming that you checked out all the reviews on the first page. Another source you might consider is Newegg as they have over 100 reviews for this laptop so far.
For more perspective on the peeling go to the first page of this lounge and scroll down to the Issues section. You will find all the reports of peeling listed there. If you want a good gaming laptop for around $1000 I think most of the gamers here would say to go ahead and get this laptop and don't worry about the peeling. I was one of the first with this laptop and I am just starting to see the first signs of this. From my experience and everything I have read here I have come to a conclusion on this. If you let anything rub against the front edge of this laptop it will eventually start peeling there. So if you put it in a sleeve before putting it in a bag, and don't let it rub on anything when on your lap you should be ok. The rubber coating is great. But it is cosmetic and similar to paint in that with heavy use it will some day wear off. -
I will take down the driver section on the first page if your thread takes off.

I just requested an RMA for my battery. The said they will get back to me in 48 hours and collect it from my workplace. It should take about a 10 days turnaround.
