The fan runs faster and noisier after I flashed the 209. No temp changes though.

Boss, please, on first page, is it possible to put a date when you change the link for drivers update ? It will be easier to navigate from with all the changes that A.s.u.s does not give us any change log... this date would be a landmark for us...
    Thanks so much

Anybody knows a way to restore my recovery partition? As i said in a older post, I installed a clean copy of windows. Now i lost my videomagic suite.
I emailed to asus support and they answered that the only way to reinstall the programs is to acces recovery partition.
Now the problem is that i had to rewrite the MBR, and i can't acces this partition anymore by pressing the F9 key, but physicaly is still there(i can see it in disk management and explore it in my computer-i assigned it a letter).
I can't set it as active in disk management.
    Thank you.

P.S: Don't keep the nb set on high performance p4g profile if you want to keep it cool.
I have a feeling that it is overvolting your processor,i mean the clock speed stays very high when is no need(1.73-2.40GHZ in idle with no application runing)
    )
My advice is to keep it on "balance" power management profile.
Example: While i am using high performance my processor stay at 55-59-54-52 and gpu at 54-58 in idle but while i am using balance it stay at 47-45-50-49 processor and 46-48 degrees GPU(processor stay constant at 933-1600 MHZ at 0%-10% load).
You can make your own profile like me when you are running on AC. I set maximum processor performance at 55% , GPU on maximum battery saving(300mhz/300mhz) and active cooling to keep it cool while i am browsing or listening music and i don't need performance.

I'm not home to check, but isn't there a recovery CD you can use to restore? I'm not thinking of the DVD set some people have burned to store the initial configuration, but a CD that works in conjunction with the recovery partition to restore the system.

Video playback settings can be found in Catalyst Control Center (CCC). You can get there by double-clicking the "ATI" icon in the notification area of the taskbar. The only setting that I have found to significantly degrade video playback was "dynamic contrast." It makes the blacks misbehave (lighten and darken).

The only other thing I could suggest is to double check the display settings for the external monitor/TV; make sure the resolution matches the native resolution of TV. Those settings can also be found inside CCC or in Win 7 by right-clicking the desktop and choosing "screen resolution."

Check in CCC. There is a page in there where you can set some properties of the display. I thought I remembered seeing refresh rate in there. I would think it would be automatically selected to the proper refresh rate for your monitor though.

    Hey waxxt.

I could be wrong, but my understanding of LCDs is that there is no refresh rate. It's a different technology than the old CRTs which actually scanned the image across the screen. So there is no difference when running an LCD at 60Hz or 75Hz.

So the simple solution is to not worry about it at all! :)

I'm wanting to install VideoMagic on a clean Win7 recovery (using provided recovery disk). I've changed to a solid state disc :)
The recovery disc that you burn uses the partition on the disc.
The disc that comes with the laptop is a clean windows 7 install, and the cyberlink suite provided on the separate disc is not the videomagic version - it doesn't have the truemotion and theatreHD settings and so no upscaling framerate and resolution.

You can probably restore it but if you overwrote the partition it was contained on then you will have a conflict as the new and old partitions are competing for the same space on the disk. Best chance is to download a tool like Paragon Partition Manager and use it to search out and restore any accidentally deleted partitions.

I use a combination of free portable software whenever I can, this makes my software catalog both easy to backup and easy to transfer to a new system. Otherwise, I'd suggest backing up all of your data by hand. My system is very personalized and I backed up and configured my entire system by hand. Sometimes it's a good way of clearing out all the old cruft on old systems anyways.

Not a bad idea at all steve. I think you could easily backup and clear all the media off of an old system, shrink the drive and then clone it into a virtual system. Depending on the system's age, the N61 can probably run it virtualized faster than it it was running native. You 'll still have access to all your old programs so you have plenty of time to set up the new system and you won't have to worry about clogging the new computer with junk from your old install.

We have used this tool to make VHD's out of current systems but we've only successfully tested it on XP systems.

What did you do/use to make your old system a VM?

    Hi Risco,

    I have an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200.
This card works at 5GHz also.

The Intel 6300 would not be very suitable as our notebooks has only two antennas.

I used that same tool (it is an XP system). I found Virtual PC to be agonizingly slow, however, so I switched to VirtualBox. I used the CloneVDI tool to convert the VHD, although VirtualBox natively supports VHD.

    No, it is very easy.

You just need to unplug the two antenna and then remove the 2 screws and the old card will pop up.
I think the procedure should be in the disassembly manual found on the first page of this thread.

Just remember that the positions of the two antenna connectors may be switched; they are labeled on the wireless card (one connects to the grey wire and one to the black). When I installed my Atheros 9280 card, I had to switch the wires.

Haha I wish =P but no, there is a refresh rate on LCDs, always an adjustable setting like resolution.

This laptop can run at 75 hertz on my tower, and i'm sure there is a way to do it on laptops as well I just dont know how to do it myself :p from what i understand, generally laptops lock it at 60 hertz untill you change some settings or download some program or something to make it adjustable, was just hoping someone here knew

Technically, when you set the "refresh rate" with an LCD, you are just setting the frequency at which the video card outputs frames. As Atook mentioned, the LCD does not have refresh rate (e.g. the sweeping speed of a scanning electron gun in a CRT). In CCC, you can control the rates, but at least on my TV (and on the laptop monitor itself), you cannot set 75 Hz without also reducing the resolution. It could be that the monitor/TV reports the time it takes to write X pixels, so that the computer knows what output rates are allowed with which resolution.

    Hi,

I am the new owner of a N61JQ-X1 and I have two quick questions:

    1. Can anyone recommend a free temp monitoring utility? Ideally, I'd like to be able to monitor the CPU temp, GPU temp, and the fan speed. I've heard a lot of people mention Real Temp and HD Monitor. In whichever case, could you post the link to it? Thanks.

    2. Even though the screen with the laptop has a max resolution less than 1080p, if you use only an external monitor that can support 1080p, can you increase the resolution? Thanks again.

The easiest way to set the refresh rate on your LCD is to right click on your desktop > Select Screen Resolution > Click Advanced settings > Select the monitor tab > Then select the refresh rate.

Note that if you have more than one monitor before click advanced settings select the monitor you want to adjust.

Hope that helps. I understand setting a the refresh on a CRT but it doesn't do much on an LCD, unless you require vsync for some reason, just my 2cents. :)

    1. I use HW Monitor ( CPUID ). It doesn't appear to display any fan speeds.

    2. Yes you can set a higher resolution on your external monitor.

I let the program run for a bit and this is what I got (see attached image).

Does the program actually "know" what the maxes are?

    Are these temps normal?

I can't seem to get the program to minimize to the tray, is this possible?

Also, I assume the ST... thing is referring to my HDD. Is this the actual max temperature?

Looks like you need to update your video card driver, to get the GPU temps. The CPU temps look good. The Max value is the maximum temperature reached while running HWMonitor. The Min is the minimum value reached. The value is the current temp.

For those that might be interested, over the last 3 weeks I've been working on an AI project. As part of that project I had to run the CPU on this machine pretty much from 40% - 80% (was not a multi threaded APP) every day for a minimum of 8 hours a day. In addition over one weekend the CPU was at 80% for over 48 hours. No hiccups, no bumps or bruises. It ran like a change and with 20% CPU to spare I was able to visit YouTube / record and upload video without any issues. This laptop is rock solid stable.

For those that might be interested, my goal was to evolve a Artificial Neural Network to play Infinite Mario Bros (Like Mario 3). I had some degree of success, not as much as I would have liked. If you would like to see some videos of the some of my tests here they are:

YouTube - Mario AI Trained Neural Network running through test set

I only turned the HWMonitor stuff on once during the 48 test. The temps were at 79 on one core at the highest. The rest were around 70-75. About the same was when I'm playing games for a couple of hours. The GPU was never stressed during the tests so it never really got hot. The laptop was always comfortable to the touch but out the blower blew hot air pretty much non stop.

I've had my N61JQ for about three weeks now and I love everything about it except for the display. The viewing angles are terrible and even staring at the screen straight-on, the colors wash out near the edges, especially blacks. I noticed that when looking at the display in a dark room at nearly a 90 degree angle, I can see a crack of white light all around the edges where the display does not fully meet with the lid. Can some N61JQ owners please verify if this is normal or if this is a defect on my laptop. I fear this may be the cause for the washed out colors. Thanks.

Go to desktop and displays in CCC. Then at the bottom, click configure. Set the contrast to 80. This gets rid of the washed out colours, which is caused by an overblown contrast setting.

Viewing angles are not that great, it is a TN screen so you have to live with that part. You just need for find an angle that you like and it should be fine.
