Been looking for this for awhile. Color looks perfect to me now
-
Is this true ? I thought a recovery CD/DVD is a full copy of the recovery partition and it restores completely from the CD/DVD itself, completely independent from the recovery partition, whether it exists or not.
-
you can also set Brightness to -6, blacks seems deeper to me.
-
Nice colour configuration. It's looking very good to me.
Do we have any word on the 9 cell battery for this yet? -
Hi Risco and Turbogear, you guys have convinced me too to change the wi-fi card, I have just bought it from your link Risco, cheers
I downloaded the drivers/software directly from Intel:
Intel® PROSet/Wireless WiFi Connection Utility for Windows 7 64-Bit*
I was planning in uninstalling the hardware from the hardware control panel first and also uninstalling the Asus Wireless Console 3 before physically exchanging the cards. After which installing the above mentioned drivers/software.
Would this be the right procedure?
Many thanks
-
Yes that's right, but you don't need to uninstall Wireless Console.
Unistall the original WLAN card drivers. When unistalling the old drivers, I prefer the option "Delete the driver software for this device".
After unistalling the drivers for old card shut down the machine and exchange the WLAN card.
Then boot and install the Intel Software.
Congrats and good luck.

I just received my N61JQ-A1 last night! Is there a way to tell if I have 1066 or 1333 RAM through the system or do I need to physically open cover panel and inspect?
Thanks. -
I got much higher temps after I flashed the 209 bios. I played NFS Shift for about 15 minutes. This bothers me alot.
Is 91C still ok for the gpu? How about i7 getting at 86C reading?
I'm a certified thermaldork. -
You can use CPU-Z.
Here is the link: CPUID -
Thanks for the assist!
-
Many thanks, I'll let you know how it goes
-
This maybe better because it's just the drivers
Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 and Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200 productsIntel® PRO/Wireless and WiFi Link Drivers-Only for Windows 7* -
Yes, I am also using this one.
-
Well the card turned up fine. However the reception is WORSE! Any suggestions, using a WNR2000 Netgear. Could it be an incompaiblity? I am sitting in the same room and it drops off a bar every now and again and can barely hold a signal once I get out of the house?
-
Are you using 13.2.0.30? outside link
Did you double check that the two wires are connected to the proper posts (and not switched)? From waqas1988's post long ago: "All you have to do is take off the two antenna leads, unscrew the original card, and pull it out. Then, you slide the new one in, screw it in, and plug the antennas back in. Just keep track of which wire is which (black one is antenna 1 and gray one is antenna 2). You'll need to plug it back in matching the antenna #'s on the new card (they're clearly written near the inputs of the wireless card)." -
Should I update my ATI graphics driver? I'm not sure what version I have :S. And on the AMD website it says the latest driver is version 10.4
-
New version of Wireless Console 3: V3.0.16
New audio driver: V6.0.1.6093 -
I would recommend it. The 5730 is still a new card, and not all features have been implemented in the software (e.g. OpenCL). Here's a link to the download.
-
Thanks Stevedogg, but didn't we just update the audio drivers, that's bloody fast updating
-
Perfect and that's why I assume you advised to keep the Asus Wireless Console
-
Wireless Console is an ASUS app that doesn't depend on your particular wireless card (Intel, Atheros, etc.). In my opinion, it is nice because it simplifies the wireless hotkey (Fn + F2) to toggle both bluetooth and WLAN together. Also, you can disable one or the other very easily by double-clicking the taskbar icon, then clicking either bluetooth or WLAN icons to toggle.
Without Wireless Console 3 installed, the hotkey will cycle through 4 options (all the permutations of WLAN and bluetooth on/off). -

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the drivers. The new audio driver: V6.0.1.6098. Another, quick update!
BTW, is the N61Jq a true 16.0 inch display or it is 15.6 inch display? -
When should we be seeing an update that implements these features (OpenCL)?
Historically, how long does ATI take before it makes its card fully functional? -
Ah right I jst plugged em in same as before black to left and White to right when looking at it from the rear. Have I got them wrong way round?
-
xx6093
xx6098...
very major and strong update
but thanks for the info
anyone have feedback on the fabulous major strong unbelievable 209 bios update ?
-
I looked at the stock card, and antenna #1 (black wire) is on the left, antenna #2 (grey wire) on the right (mounting holes up). According to the photo for your card, the 6200 has the same arrangement. You should be ok, but I would double check; if you have them reversed, you are using the wrong antenna for the wrong band (the 5 GHz antenna is probably half as long).
When I upgraded to an AR9280, I had to switch the wires. -
Nice catch! N61JQ is a 16 inch display.
-
According to the specs page, "OpenCL compliant driver and SDK release scheduled for later in 2010."
-
That's what I immagined, thanks for the detail, for our version here in Italy it's even simpler because it doesn't have bluetooth
-
I believe Stream 2.1 already supports the Mobility 5700 series.

Just an FYI: This does require the 10.4 drivers. -
Just tried that, no good. The chip in my wireless router is an atheros, same as the orignal card. COuld it be just an incompatibility? Or should I send it back claiming it is faulty?
-
Did the card not work at all or only 5GHz does not work?
The first time I installed my intel 6200 it was not detected by the system. It took me some fiddling. Now it works perfectly. -
The router does not have a 5ghz mode, only 2.4ghz. But it can go up to 300mbps.
-
How well does it operate in G mode (54 Mbps)? I think N performance is very sensitive to distance (e.g. you will only get the fastest transfers very close to the router, like a few meters). You might also try some different security options, or turn of encryption on your router altogether (just for testing!). I don't know much about it, but I was not able to connect my ASUS to my iMac (AirPort internet sharing) at >54 Mbps with WEP encryption turned on. Turning it off gave 130 Mbps (insecure connection).
I would guess it's a faulty card if everything operates normally but has abnormally low signal. A lot of these cards from eBay are shipped in little bubble wrap envelopes and could easily be damaged before you even get them in the mail. -
I think if you want to use N speeds you can't use WEP (I can be off on this, but it is in the back of my head for some reason). You shouldn't use WEP anyways. I can gain access to most WEP networks within 30 minutes even with MAC address filtering, even faster if someone is actively using the network. You should be using WPA2 with a long hard to remember key for a secure connection.
-
Actually, if you take the send packet from the router and immediately return it, it should reveal the WEP key. I remember that hack from about 5 years ago.
Not that I have ever hacked a network.
-
Turned of security and still signal drops, not as good as atheros for sure. Any other suggestions, could it be it do with the angle of the wire in the laptop? Can anyone take a picture of theirs connected so I can angle mine in the same way?
-
If you're working with the intel wireless card make sure you get the very latest drivers. The default ones that come with Windows 7 have some serious issues (you will get a lot of dropped packets when in N mode).
-
Yeah, WEP is basically like no security at all. I have never broken into a network myself, but I have gotten the WEP key off of a few of my neighbors houses while testing my security setup. I basically wanted to test my own wireless security so I needed to see if I could get my setup to work breaking some the networks around me first.
-
Didn't know it was that easy!
AFAIK, Airport internet sharing in Leopard gives you no other choices but WEP.
-
That's not going to matter; mine is pretty folded up in there after I replaced my card. The antenna itself should be in the screen; the wire is just a transmission line to deliver the signal to the card.
Can you test it out on a different router? Bring your screwdriver and the Atheros card over to your local coffee shop and do a comparison
Otherwise it sounds like you need an exchange. -
True story: After I did the original conversion of the Sharp Zaurus C700, I was offered a consulting position at Dynamism. I did consulting and device hacking with them for a few years. They sold tons of the little devices, I got free hardware and most of the support I did for the devices was simple. I would just support Dynamism's support staff, so I didn't have to worry about doing user support. It seemed like a harmless little side job with the exception of the legal threats I got from Sharp.
After we released the converted C3000, I got a call from Douglas (the owner of Dynamism) asking if I could help a "special customer" over the phone. I agreed and was asked to call Kevin Mitnick's cell phone. For those people that don't know who he is, he is probably the most famous hacker (mostly due to the issues with litigation and his escape). Anyway, Kevin now owns a security company and was using the C3000's for wifi sniffing. I helped him install a few custom roms and ported a couple of apps for him. During this time, we became pretty good "phone" friends.
Kevin would often call me for Linux help and I would ask him about security hacking. During the time he was using the Zaurus, he used them for about a year and a half, I learned quite a bit from him. One of the things I learned is that WEP was one of the most insecure packet protections. He could hack a WEP packet on the Zaurus (Intel Xscale 416MHz CPU with software floating point and only 64MB RAM) in 30-60 minutes. Once the WEP key is hacked, all of the packets sniffed are opened. The Zaurus had a 4GB drive and could store way too much sniffed information.
This was in 2005. Almost 5 years later, WEP is probably still the most commonly used packet protections. I think this is because most people don't understand anything about routers and wireless security. Many routers are finally getting to the point where their "one button device connecting" includes advanced encryption like WPA2 with AES (the only one I use). Hopefully soon, WEP will be a thing of the past. It almost has to since most smart phones are much more powerful then the Zaurus and have much larger storage. -
Yes, I also use only WAP2 with AES on my home WLAN router.
In addition to that I have also MAC filtering active.
I abondened WEP about 4 years ago.
You know in Germany now there is a new regulation. If they find some user with unprotected WLAN he/she will be fined a 100 Euros.
-
I know Leopard can connect to a WPA2 connected wifi. I'd be shocked if your Airport router couldn't run in WPA mode. Any decent router made in the last 5 years should be able to do that. If you can't do anything but WEP then you need a new router or connect using wired connection only. Just an FYI it only took me 10 minutes to break one WEP network using packet injection and I'm not even close to an expert at this stuff.
-
You seriously have the best stories. Dude, Kevin Mitnick you have some serious geek cred right now.
I run WPA2 with AES only too. I had to upgrade some devices to make it happen, but once I found out how weak WEP was I really had no choice.
Also MAC filtering isn't worth it. As soon as someone can read your packets they can get all the MAC addresses on your network and change their MAC address to match. It adds maybe 1 minute at most to the break in time. -
I should have clarified: the new iMacs have an "internet sharing" option that allows the iMac itself to serve as an access point (via its internal Atheros WLAN card). My iMac is connected to the internet through my work's wired ethernet; I only use internet sharing to connect my laptop/phone wirelessly.
Here's an overview of the feature, which seems to support only WEP. -
I am gonna take the laptop over to my old mans tmoz to test. He also has a netgear, but says his is fine with his setup. I want to purchase a Netgear 3700, but want to be sure this card is fine first.
-
I recently purchased a N61JV-X2, but if I try I load games (TF2 for now), the Optimus LED switches from blue to white briefly, and then switches back. I cannot get the Optimus to stay on.
This seemed to happen after I installed the latest Nvidia drivers, but I cannot be sure. Attempting to set preference with Nvidia control panel to use the 325M globally results in the same thing - blue, then a few seconds of white, then back to blue.
My games are lagging because of this, and I am debating returning the laptop if Optimus is not yet ready for prime time.
It looks like others are having this issue: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Forum- Running "old" games (like Fallout 3) with Nvidia Optimus
Has anyone come across this? -

Dude, you have the wrong machine. The right machine for this forum is N61Jq and not N61Jv.
