Catalyst 10.5 are out!!
ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver
-
And they greatly improve the load times for BC2
-
I got a massive performance boost in UT3 and Dirt 2.
-
I wonder if these will fix the Premiere Pro CS4 and CS5 laggy playback issues I complained to them about?
Well, only one way to find out.
-
They FIXED IT!
My god, a little repetitive formal complaining goes so far.
I shall email them all and wish them well in life.
-
Great news!!
Seems strange that, the driver improves performance for even old games like UT3.
@Risco,
I am right now using Monitor Calibration Wizard to prevent the calibrated .icc profile from unloading. Thanks!!
Edit: After going back and reading your previous posts, I see that CCC(Desktop and Display) properties apparently works better.
Also what are your current settings in CCC, if I may ask?(Still Hue:0,Sat:0,B:-5,Contrast:92 ?)
I will probably be trying to create a calibrated .icm profile using some good color calibration tool.(Self Eye-calibrated profiles won't work for me, my eyes are used to poor displays, I guess :O )
(PS: The other method, mentioned in the link I provided in the previous page, doesn't work in some cases, I think) -
A more generell question (which may have probably been answered somewhere in this incredibily long thread):
N61JQ has according to the review article in this thread bluetooth but some posters at various sites have stated that it lacks bluetooth. - I am a bit confused now. What is correct?
Thanks -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Bluetooth is standard on the ASUS N61JQ-A1
-
Ok, I assume then this is true for the version ASUS N61JQ-JX011V which is sold in Europe.
-
On some models, the N61JQ doesn't come with internal bluetooth modules. However, in your case, the N61JQ-JX011V appears to have Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.
-
That is good to hear.
I am a bit in a conflict now whether to go for N61JQ or N82JV. -
So while I sing the praises of Laplink's PCMover I have found a problem. See, I had Virtual PC 2007 running on the original 32-bit XP laptop and somehow that got transferred over to the Asus. Now I can't uninstall it.
Tells me that it isn't a 64-bit app so even the uninstall doesn't work. Try to install the 64-bit and it reminds me there's already a version there. Oh, and I JUST upgraded my W7 to Professional so although it let me install XP Mode just fine it won't allow me to run it - because there's an older version installed. "Please uninstall older version". (Thanks, MS, I'd LOVE to!).
I'm not crazy about hacking the registry but I have a feeling I'm going to be pulling out the recovery discs.
Word to the wise - be careful what you have installed and/or transfer over when using PCMover. FANTASTIC product but be really careful. -
Just bumping this thread.
I did a burn test, after the second pass, the cpu peaked @ 89C. It scared me. Instinctively, I hit the stop button.
Is there any cpu in n61jq running below 60C on normal load? [eg web surfing] Or do all cpu in n61jq run above 60C? Mine is running at 68 max right now.

OKAY, disregard this post - if I could delete it, I would. Totally messed up....my apologies.

My A1 peaked at 86 C during Intel Burn Test (earlier in this thread). Burn Test is not a realistic load. Intel designs their chips to self-throttle when the temps get too high; they've been doing it since the Pentium M as far as I can remember. If it makes you feel any better, I used to operate my old Dell Inspiron 600m up to the throttling temp regularly; the downside was choppy performance and a loud fan, but the laptop still runs flawlessly after 5 years. The throttling temp for your chip is 100 C.
BTW: 68 C is chilly cool for this mobile CPU. I bet your fans are barely running at that temp. -
Burn tests are designed to run you CPU at %110 as they test parts of your processor that are seldom used at the same time by normal programs, even under a full load. Considering that the latest macbooks reach temps of 100C and higher BY DESIGN, you shouldn't worry too much about 89C. Your CPU will shut itself off if temperatures ever get high enough to damage anything, just keep it away from your nuts.

So I tried to update BOIS from v208 to 209 today using the flash utility in the BIOS. I now have a brick in the shape of an N61. Anybody know if there is a CMOS reset switch on the motherboard of this laptop? I couldn't open it and dont want to ruin the plastic trying for no reason. It was such a nice laptop!!!
-
Sorry to hear that
You've got a bit of digging to do if you want to get to the battery: link to service manual. -
I would recommend running a "MODERATE" removal of Virtual PC 2007 with Revo Uninstaller. It can be downloaded using Ninite here. I'll bet you that it works out. -
I use 80 contrast, everything else default.
On a annoying note, seems I have a faulty Intel 6200 on my hands. It has horrible reception, drops a bar randomly while in the same room as does not connect at 300mbps with a Netgear 3700.
-
Risco, i got almost the same issue here but with a different Card Intel WiMAX 5150... bought from eBay...
The original Wireless card that came with the N61, had better signal reception and more stable speed when connected at 150Mbps. -
Well that is interesting, so even we both have a faulty card or there is an issue with compatibility?
Anyone care to input? -
Hello again everyone, its been a long time
I'm happy, very happy enjoying my Asus. thanks to everyone for all the valuable info.
Now I tried to install this ati update
and it keeps crashing, Here is the error message maybe you know what to do?
catalyst install manager has stopped working
(I only hacve two choices:
- check online for a solution and close the program (which says nothing...it just closes after "checking online"...)
- close the program)

Can anybody help? -
I tried going to desktop and display, then clicking configure(under the small monitor icon), but there, in avivo settings, only hue and saturation can be set.
Pardon my Ignorace, but where do you set Contrast and Brightness(I see that option only in Display properties)? -
Thanks a lot for that Stevedogg! It will help, great find! I tried to google for a manual like that but wasn't succesful. Is there a manual for the motherboard to locate the BIOS chip or if I'm really lucky a CMOS reset jumper or something?
-
Well I think I might just stay with the stock wireless card as it seems to work so well. Risco did I see you post the other day that your router does not support 5ghz? If so then why did you upgrade your card? If your router does not support 5ghz maybe you should return your faulty card and go back to the stock one.
-
OK I've also completed the form and I'll post the reply as soon as I get it.
-
I have just received mine and this evening I hope to install it and I'll let you have my feedback.
BTW I just have to pull out the antenna cables right, no twisting or turning?? -
Try to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable x64.
-
How's your temp?
-
Thanks - indeed it did remove it although it was a "dirty" uninstall. I got the same error as always but Revo went into the registry and suggested I kill about 50 keys/values. AFTER exporting the entire registry (just in case) I went forward, rebooted and voila, Virtual PC 2007 was gone and it allowed me to install the W7 version of XP Mode. The main concern I have is it gave a flash of a blue-screen one time, very quickly rebooted and came up fine.
'Appreciate the tip and link. I'm not sure what I'm going to do going forward. I may still reload from the recovery DVD's since I don't want a shaky system so early in the game. I expect my OS installs to last a couple of years before I have to go thru the pain of reimaging. -
Hi, i managed to read about 1500 posts but then got tired of it... Thanks to you guys, I will buy this notebook.
What is the best price i can get it for in canada atm? (i dont care if its an A1 or X1)
Thanks, -
For the best price in Canada you have to check here, I think its lucomputer, they have ebay shop too... : ASUS N61JQ-A1 - Price Comparison - Canada's Cheapest Prices
-
Don't thank me; I just copied the link from the front page. The manual was provided by Ken@GenTechPC. I don't think it's the exact same as the N61JQ model, but it's probably the closest we're going to get.
I don't know if there's a jumper or anything that would make it easier to reset besides removing the battery. Please post if you find anything; there was one other user who got unlucky with a BIOS update in this thread, and I'm sure it will happen again. -
I bought a new router that supports 5ghz. Pretty stumped as to why reception issues.
it is under display properties if you use desktop and dsiplays the settings unload when playing games or waking fro. Sleep.
just pop the off you need to pull but carefully. -
A post with links to all the possible runtime libraries: download 'em all
-
I only recorded temps during stress tests. My results are early in this thread.
-
Thanks Risco.
After I finally managed to unscrew the screw near antenna n. 2 (it didn't want to know to come loose the bugger), I exchanged the cards, switched on the notebook, installed the N-6200 drivers v. 3.1.1.1 and the card was recognised as
Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6200 AGN
but the darn thing will not work!
Actually it's the wifi led near the touchpad that does not light up and I've no idea why. I have already uninstalled and re-installed the driver but no luck.
Any ideas guys?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
There is a hardware switch at the front of the left side of the ASUS N61JQ-A1. It needs to be in the forward position to turn your WiFi card on.
-
Thanks, already tried that
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Ok, then uninstall the ASUS Wireless Console 3 and download and install the latest Wireless Console 3 from support.ASUS.com. In the drop downs select Notebook in the first one, Apps in the second one, and the Wireless Console 3 in the 3rd one.
-
I've already got the latest one installed v. 3.0.16, but I'll try uninstalling it and reinstalling it.
OK tried that but no luck, why did I want to use the 5Ghz???
Anyway paladin44 many thanks.
You know what I'll try with the Intel software just out of curiosity/frustration.
Turbogear if you're out there what problems did you have when you changed cards and most important how did you resolve them. -
I found, when messing with drivers, that sometimes Windows disables the adapter for no reason. In my case, the driver installed fine (and the device showed up with no issues in Device Manager), but I could not see any access points. Wifi was "on" in Wireless Console and the hardware switch was on. It happens regularly when upgrading drivers (I am using an Atheros AR9280 chip). The solution is to click the wireless icon in the taskbar (the Windows one, not Wireless Console) and choose "Troubleshoot" (or something to that effect). Windows will search for problems and tell you that the radio is not turned on. Let it "fix" the problem, and it works fine afterward.
-
Hi stevedogg, last time I had this problem with the Atheros card I did just that and it worked but this time round no luck so far I'm afraid, but I'll try it again.
-
Right click the wireless icon and click troubleshoot. It should find that wireless is disabled or something similar and asking the apply the fix. Click yes and it should work.
I losing patience with this laptop. First GTA stutters like it is going out of business and is totally unplayable. Then I have my touchpad making an electrical buzz while using the touchpad and surfing. NOw I get a wifi card that does not friggin work.
At the end of my tether.
EDIT, should have read previous post sorry! -
No problem Risco, when I do it it just says there's a problem with the driver.
I'll tinker with it a little bit more but then I'm off to bed it's been a very long day with an even longer working week-end up ahead.
Cheers guys I'll let you know how it goes. -
I am thinking you and me may have got engineering samples.
Also here is my GTAIV stutter I am talking about, it is driving me potty!
YouTube - Gtaiv stuttering -
can't tell the stutter?
-
Hard to show on a video, but I do not have a high def cam. Don't watch the car, watch the trees etc as they pass by. The stutter makes it impossible to control the car.
