Hi, have a doubt regarding the webcam usage. I had uninstalled Lifeframe initially along with lots of other bloatwares, but found that it could be useful for recording videos etc.(Any other alternative software, I downloaded ManyCam).

So, I downloaded and installed Lifeframe 3, but it says "the camera is being used by another program". I did a bit of searching in the net, and tried uninstalling the camera driver, then restarting. Also tried fully deleting the drivers, and then updated the drivers. I had to download all the camera drivers available as I couldn't find which driver would work with mine; the product Id didn't match, any listed in the official asus site; but the driver provider was Sonix(So Chicony ?) ).

Installed ManyCam, but it is also not able to access the webcam.
Also uninstalled and reinstalled Lifeframe, but facing the same problem. Any solutions?

Have a look at page 2-8 of the disassembly manual.
    Here: http://www.gentechpc.com/Asus/N61JQ/N61VN Series Chapter 02-v1.0.pdf

You will see that the side containing this hole is on the lower side and is not blocked by the heat spreading material in the bay.

Is the HDD not accessible anymore?

HDDs die some time to time without any warning. It happened to me once, but luckly I had a backup of the data.

no, he doesnt die, i lost all the partitions... twice.. the first time i was thinking that maybe was my fault, but the second was random. one night i shut down the notebook, and at the next day, it doesnt start, when i check the disk with a ubuntu live cd, i have the disk unpartioned.

but, when i use the disk plugged by usb enclousure works like a charm... i dont know...

the thing is, that i bought this in spain and i live in argentina, where there is no official support. so if a dont fix it by my self... im done...

Good to hear you got it back :) ! What are you planning to do with the wear level, apart from stop checking it?! :D

In my case I contacted Asus on Monday, sent it off on Wednesday and it arrived at the tech centre on Thursday, now let's see how long it'll take them to fix it.

Hello everybody. I am a proud owner of the N61 and I was wondering if anyone has contacted Asus regarding some of the problems with the laptop? It's kind of overwhelming to look through all 481 pages of posts haha. The problems I am most worried about are the random BSODs once in a while, the peeling rubber coating, and the squealing noise. Has anyone been successful in getting Asus to address any of these issues?

When you say it doesn't start do you mean that the NB presents no screen images OR you see the Asus Logo image but then says that you have no disk installed?

In my case with the disk installed no screen images, without the disk Asus Logo image but then no disk installed message. As in your case the disk works fine in an external enclosure but without having lost the partitions.

I have sent it in for repairs and I'll let you know their response.

Well I was going to complain, but after a couple of charges it has gone back to 0%. So I guess it must have been a bit glitchy. :D On the plus side, I had a little chip on the screen before, but as they replaced the LCD bezel it has now gone.

I still get a high pitched whine noise when using iTunes, so must be an inherant laptop issue. Anyone else notice that?

It took me 5 hard restarts before I got in the desktop with all programs fully loaded. I don't know what really causes this. The startup is really slow and when I hit the login button, the disk light indicator just goes off and the system freezes. No BSODs whatsoever. Also when I got in the desktop, it seems that windows doesn't recognize the wifi switch as on. No wifi light indicator, and the icon on the notification area is marked with red X.

Man, school here in PH has just began and I don't want an RMA this early. I have no idea bout the quality of local asus service center here. Also I don't know where to send this to RMA as I live here in philippines.

Can someone please shed some light about this?

    Bullshrek.

Sigh my laptop has got to go back. Where they changed the motherboard it won't automatically activate. It says my windows is not genuine as I did a clean reinstall so I can start fresh. I guess the tech forgot to embed the slic table in my bios.

No the slic is in every bios. The tech do not have to insert it for every new mainboard.
You said you did a clean install.
Did you use the key at the bottom side of the notebook?
Did you do the activate one time already using the key at the bottom side of the machine on older mainboard?

If so then the key at the bottom of the notebook has already activated once with the older mainboard and you cannot activate it again without calling Microsoft.
I also heard sometimes you cannot do activation with the key at the botttom side without calling microsoft even if you never used it before.

If you did a restore of windows from the ASUS hidden partition then I assume it should work as the certificate (asus.cert.xrm-ms) and the super key needed to do offline activation should be already integrated into the recovery partition.

I only ever install from the restore partition, so I guess that is not what you would call a clean install?

Before when I reinstalled from the restore partition it would automatically be activated. I have never previously had to enter the product key in order to activate. I was able to get it activated via phone, but that is not how it should be. I did a second reinstall and updated the bios as well, but it does the same thing.

I can only guess it is due to the motherboard change as to why it will not activate. I have requested an RMA, pretty annoyed as it means at least another week without the laptop.

Found a link with someone who has the exact same issue as me

    This is very strange.
Normally restoring the recovery partition should activate windows automatically as the slic should be in bios. Something seems to be wrong there. I hope the new board does not require a new cert.xrm-ms.

Did you check for example with Everest to see if the SLIC is present or not?

It seems your trouble with N61JQ still does not seem to come to an end.

I would think you shouldn't have to RMA for that. Try calling Microsoft to explain the situation; they will probably reset the key for you. Then, as soon as you activate, immediately take an image of the drive with Macrium Reflect or Acronis. If you need to restore, use that image instead of the partition.

Check if there is a SLIC in the bios. Use Everest and then under motherboard in ACPI section look if you have SLIC v2.1.

    It should look like this:
    ACPI Table Properties
    ACPI Signature SLIC
Table Description Software Licensing Description Table
    Memory Address BB5AEC18h
    Table Length 374 bytes
    OEM ID _ASUS_
    OEM Table ID Notebook
    OEM Revision 06222004h
    Creator ID ASUS
    Creator Revision 00000001h
    SLIC Version 2.1

By the way England is currently playing against Algeria in World Cup.

What you posted above is APIC table.

Scroll down with Everest in the ACPI section under Motherboard and look for SLIC table item.

Is the SLIC table not listed under the ACPI items?

Do you have the full version of Everest or the Basic Free one?
If you have the basic version maybe it does not list all the things, becuase even if it is empty it should be listed.
I have a full version from my work place. :D

Nope, not listed and this is the full version. I am pretty peeved at Asus if they have given me a new mobo without the SLIC. From lots of googling it does not seem possible to permanently install the SLIC because as soon as the bios is updated the Slic will get removed.

I know nothing about SLIC tables, but doesn't that mean that it is stored in the BIOS? Have you tried flashing your original BIOS (backward) before doing a system restore?

I don't see what an RMA would do for you if the missing table is just part of the BIOS

Edit: Ok, from reading this thread, it seems that the SLIC table has to be inserted at precisely the correct memory address in the BIOS, so that it is not overwritten when you update (I guess the BIOS flash ignores the table if it is already there but will not add a new one). Maybe you can issue a new RMA request with the specific aim of writing that table into the BIOS.

The SLIC is a bit more complicated and not easy to get flashed ( and permanent at that )

I tried installing the ASUS Winflash (V2.30.1), but, unfortunately, it doesn't let me backup my BIOS. I thought maybe a backup copy, when compared against the ones you download, might include tables and such that are not overwritten.

There is an option under Power 4Gear Hybrid to activate the camera for each power profile; you should check it, change to another, go back and wait for a moment in order to ensure it takes effect.

I hope this solve your problem.

Does anyone know what I should check for for this problem. I'm assuming it's a hardware problem. Anyways, the problem is that my system just randomly stalls for like 30seconds to a minute or so. Both on linux and windows, and I've already done a fresh install (wiped and reinstalled both), checked the harddrive for bad sectors, and then checked the ram. Any ideas of what could be causing this?

    Could it be overheating?

You might try updating some of the more critical drivers:

BIOS V210 Do this with care; see my post for instructions

    Intel chipset driver

    Intel Rapid Storage Technology

    Intel Management Engine Interface

    ATI Catalyst 10.6

Im not sure but i'm assuming its hardware issues as it does it on both linux/windows even after a fresh install. And just webbrowsing isn't that hard on the machine...so i don't know.

Still looking in to this issue for auto activation. From what I can gather, the laptop does have SLIC hidden somewhere in there, but the service team have not "Asset Tagged" the machine as preloaded with windows.

I cannot fault the turnround time and quality of the workmanship, but this issue is not acceptable. Frustrating that these things always happen over a weekend, leaving me hung out to dry and to stew for a couple of days.

Another link here verifying the asset tagging thing.

ASUS sent my notebook back with a clean Win7 reinstall after being repaired; no longer genuine

    Hello everyone!

I'm from portugal and i just bought a n61jq. everything looks wonderfull except for a little tiny issue i'm noticing since i started using it. I randomly hear the hard drive making this little noise all the time (specially when im making big downloads). This sounds is pretty much like the sound of a dvd drive reading a disc, like a "tssc tssc tssc" sound that follow the hdd led indicator.
Doesnt really bother me at all, just worried if its normal or something to worry.

this unit came with 208 bios, should i update to 210? what does it change?

    many thanks in advance!

If it's louder than the DVD drive itself, your hard drive might be on the way out. back up anything important.

    Hi everyone,

I recently acquired a new ASUS N61Jq laptop but I'm experiencing some issues regarding lack of memory when working with large ppt files.

Yesterday had the screen flickering as you can check on the videos attached.

Bios is update since 2 weeks ago.

The system has 4Gb of Ram Memory.

What can be causing this? Anyone can help. How to diagnose?

    Thanks in advance.

You can't bind it to WinAmp, but you can unbind it from WMC. Start => Run => msconfig => Startup => Uncheck "ATK Media" => Reboot.

Before doing the above, I highly recommend upgrading the hotkey drivers to the latest: V1.0.0004

The keys should execute their functions (e.g. play or stop) when the media program is open (e.g. WinAmp).

If I were you, I would submit an RMA as soon as possible. It's probably a faulty graphics card (might as well repair it sooner than later).

I can confirm that's a faulty graphics card. I saw that but a bit worse when my ATI card died after 10 minutes of using my system. Sent it back for RMA, got it back a week later and now the machine is fully functional.
