Express Gate is a separate Linux-based "operating system." To start it, shut down the notebook and, afterward, press the running man key (top left, by the media keys).

You really don't need ExpressGate when using a SSD since the SSD boots so fast anyway.

I know, I need to push left upper button when computer is off. What I found first that when I put my ssd the bios configures sata as ahci. Then I read that express gate only works when bios configures as sata or ide. I don't have sata option. only ide and ahci. So I guess I was bored and reinstalled the winows under ide configuration. Installed express gate rom dvd. Now it shows expess gate menu when I press the button, but then does not continue when I press web or anything else. Could that be windows 7 ultimate? When I install expressgate there is no error messages. Also, I would like to know if somebody could check their bios. In original configuration does sata configures as IDE? Thanks.

Also do you think if bios has sata configures as ide or ahci, does it affect hdd speed?

If you are using Windows 7 you should have the BIOS set to AHCI, not IDE.

My laptop was running expressgate on original hdd. Which I still have. AHCI will not run expressgate. It states on asus help support. So, that's why I would like toknow the original bios config

    Mine says AHCI.

Edit: you may try a different version of Express Gate (newest is V1.4.10.1 here)

quote "Express Gate issue: Do you have the drive express gate installed on running in IDE mode? You'll get that error message at boot up if you either don't have express gate installed or have it installed on a hard drive that is running in either AHCI or RAID mode. It will only function on a drive running in IDE mode, which makes the program absolutely worthless "
This is from Asus tech answer. How can your bios be configured in ahci and still function expressgate. I am confused

I have my HDD setup in AHCI mode and I am able to use Express gate. First you will need to install the latest version on to your hard drive from windows. Then shutdown you machine. Then once it is shutdown, press the silver button in the upper left of the laptop (next to the mute button). The machine should turn on and go into express gate mode.

    1) I would stick with the bios you have unless you're having an issue.
    2) Some say WinFlash (I'll have to agree) some say easy flash in the bios (I used this during my last update without issues).
    3) Yes!

Windows 7 will not have a problem switching between IDE and AHCI. It will auto detect the change and install/load the appropriate drivers.

For me Windows 7 loaded in about the same speed as express gate, might have been a 5 second difference at most and I'm using the the standard 7200 RPM drive it came with. I'm using an older version of express gate which might be affecting the speed.

I agree with you stevedogg. It takes about 45 seconds using Express Gate to figure out that you will never go there again. Express Gate reminds me of the Windows Experience Index if you know what I mean. But I do understand how you want everything to work vtar43. Its kind of like how everyone wants to know why their WEI score is so low until they figure out how stupid the score is. I would get the Express Gate working and then uninstall the useless thing.

If I sound so negative maybe my friends on the other side of the water will understand. What the hell kind of ending was that to the US/Slovenia match.
It reminds me of the Ref's over here in the NFL. :mad2:

I guess the hardware switch on the left side just in front of the USB 3.0 is on?
otherwise check post # 4394 by stevedogg

OK, but it's very similar to my problem and as I said as soon as they repair it and hopefully let me know what they did I'll let you know.

As to regarding to the disk working fine in the external enclousure (as also mine does) it leads me to believe that the problem is the motherboard or at least the HDD connector. :(

I hope your N61JQ comes back in good shape. Many people seems here to have some sort of problem when their machine comes back from a visit to repair center.

The US team seems so far to have better chances of going forward.
On the other hand our Germany team has also lost their game against Serbia.

 This is a good one.

By the way, have you found any further info about your activation problem?

Most probably you have to be little bit harder on ASUS support to make them take it back for RMA and have this "asset tag" thing done.

It seems that if the SLIC is hidden then flashing a new bios does not overwrite it. It seems parts of the bios is not flashed by the standard ASUS tools (Winflash, Easyflash).
I don't know if there is some tool for UEFI bios to force the complete bios being flashed.
With older bioses it was possibel to do so with AFUDOS, but I think this tool does not work with UEFI bioses.

Hehe, all the information I found suggests I need to be pushing hard with Asus to take it back. I personally would rather them send me a bios and tool to flash or enable this. Can't really be doing without my laptop again.

I actually love this laptop, very happy with it and also the work they have done fixing it is great. But the missing activation is not acceptable as I bought the laptop with windows pre installed.

Keep us informed how it goes, but I believe they will most probably not give you the tool to do this.
This special SLIC un-hiding tool is something they will not want the users to get their hands on. ;)

    Yes it's on.

If I have to restore, would windows still detect the os as genuine? I updated the bios to v209, the laptop came with v204.

What about the lock-up? Symptom of a dying hdd? I'm very pissed off when the lock-up happens.

Slow startup sounds like a driver issue. You won't get issues with it being detected as genuine unless you had your motherboard replaced like me. After mine was replaced my system was crash happy, and I had to restore and which point I found out the error with the SLIC missing.

Ok at this point do a restore - F9 at start up - and as Risco said you will not have problems with the OS as genuine.

Good luck and let us know :) .

I got a question, I'm considering to buy a Asus N61JQ-X1 from newegg.ca and I wanted to make sure about the warranty on the item. When I messaged them they said that the warranty on the product is only 1 year. But from what I read from this forums since I lived in CA it should be 2 years for labor and parts + 1 year accident free warranty. So now I'm confuse...

I have a quick question. I plan on leaving my computer on for an extended period of time (plugged in) so I can download a large file and later so I can make a system image backup. Are these activities affected if I allow the computer to go into hibernate (or whatever the term is) mode? Is there a quick way to change the settings where the screen will go off but the computer will not after an a certain period of time when the computer is plugged in?

If the computer goes to hibernation then non of these activities will work.

If you just want to turn of the screen without making the PC go to sleep or hibernation, go to the Power4Gear utility in the tray and change it there.
You can also do it over the windows power options, but it is faster over the Power4Gear and from there you could also go to Advanced setting to access the windows power options in case you want to change some setting which are not listed in the P4G.

Well, I have uninstalled Power 4Gear Hybrid also, as I didn't find it particularly useful, the default win dows power management works fine for me.

Guess, I'll have to download P4G again?
Any other alternative solution, guys?

Power4Gear modes give a lot of battery life to the system that the default profiles don't. I suggest you reinstall it.

Also, you can play with the options in the power profiles. Just right click the power icon in the bottom right of the screen and go to power option, from there you can choose how long it takes for the screen to dim as well as go off, what happens when you close the lid and many other options like that.

    Hi N61 owners

I am presently looking at this model, I found this model with the following specs:

    I5-430M 2.26Ghz
    4GB RAM
    500GB HDD
    Nvidia Geforce GT 325M (1GB)
    windows 7 Home premium

This model is w/o blue ray function. I hardly watch DVDs. This model is 200bucks cheaper than the blue ray model.

Should I go for this model. Tks. :)
