I did post a torrent, but the hard drive where it was stored crashed! So unless someone else downloaded and seeded it you're out of luck unless my freezer trick works on the dead drive. If it doesn't work though I'll just rebuild the iso, it wasn't that hard.

I want to know if any of you have the drivers (esp USB driver to detect android smartphone) for Windows 8 RTM.
    Thank you...

Thanks for the help! (It's kinda tough sifting through 200+ pages of UL30VT content)

    I'll try this ASAP

Thank you @micman ! I'm currently downloading it and seeding at the same time, it's not very fast (40-60 ko/s) but it should be done for tomorrow !

As soon as I have reinstalled a lited version of Windows 7 I will keep seeding for a month or two.

    Thanks again !

Sorry that I don't have an answer to your question, but were you able to install P4G Hybrid? The install wont complete because windows 8 RTM removes the gadgets bar... this causes the installer to freak out and cancel.

    Yo.

Windows 7 does this too. I fixed it. Right after you install and it fails, run the installer a second time. This time it will work, with a new error message at the end. Ignore the new error message and reboot. P4GH will work.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the speedy reply! Unfortunately, this did not work for me. :( I was keeping an eye on the P4G folder in "Program Files" and as soon as any error message came up, P4GH would uninstall itself by removing the files from the directory.

I guess its important to note that this occurs with the latest version (Power4Gear_Hybrid_WIN7_64_Z122).

I did figure out a work around for windows 8 + the latest version. Have "Task Manager" open and on the details tab when you first begin the installation. After it hangs at the last bit on the installation bar, find and end the process before any error comes up. Since the gadget is installed last, all the files involving P4G have already been setup and configured. A reboot completed the installation.

    Cheers!

    Hi All

Ul30vt owner here, new to the forums.

I've had the laptop for about two years, and its starting to get pretty hot and the fan runs very loud whenever I start running too much at the same (video is particuarly bad). I'm pretty sure it's full of dust and just needs to be cleaned out.

What I'm wondering is how much do I actually have to pull it apart to get the dust out? I've seen this disassembly guide, but would rather not pull the whole thing apart as is shown there because I'm worried that I'll have some kind of issue putting it all back together.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/484260-asus-ul30vt-notebook-disassembly-guide.html

    Can anyone here help?

    Thanks
    Alex

    Alex,

If you carefully push up the 4 spring clips to release the keyboard, you can remove the keyboard to uncover the cooling fan. The keyboard ribbon cable has a release lever to allow you to set the keyboard aside if you wish, be carefull!

Now that you exposed the fan, use canned air to blow the dust to the inside, out the fan. A vaccum hose can be used around the fan to rid you of those nasty fur balls blown out with the canned air. Use tooth pick or finger to not allow the fan to over speed when cleaning.

If none of the above helps, you may have to consider a tear down and repaste. Make sure battery and power removed for all of the above!

    Good Luck!

Just thought I would update after using the above battery. It sucks  compared to original Asus battery. It's the old saying you get what you pay for but hope that the other 12 cells fair better than this one. I have used other third party batteries before so this is hopefully just one of the so so ones.

Pros: I like the way the 12 cell raises the back!

Cons: The added capacity just seems to be smoke and mirrors. I do get a bit more than the original at the penalty of the added weight. Under very high loads the laptop shuts down; which did not happen to original Asus battery when new. This suggest that the IR is higher in these cells.

This sample did not lock as well as the old one. I have to move it a bit more carfully to avoid over stressing the battery locks.

Wish I could torture all the 12 cells on market but good luck with that.
I may tear apart my original to replace with Sanyo cells on a rainey day far away. :)

Well someday if my battery bothers me enough I'll buy and torture a different 12 cell. Funny how much we still try to make our super old UL laptops run like new, when newer better stuff is out there. :p

Thanks a lot for that. Very helpful, as I had been planning on attacking it from the bottom.

Did as you suggested and it seems to have done the trick, fan is under control and it isn't getting too hot.

    Hello!

I'm a proud owner of an UL30VT for 2 years. Just bought an SSD and was thinking about installing windows 8 now when it is in RTM (msdn). Have i Understand correctly that i have to choose if i want to use intel or nvidia graphics permanent (unable to switch between them what so ever)? I dont mind going inte advanced powersettings and change if that is needed since i mostly use the intel if that will make it possible to switch between them.
If i stay at windows 7, what will the natilus (or how it's spelled) 260 driver do for me? is it worth to update stock drivers? (the graphic switch button does'nt respond when i press it as it is now). Is there any other tweek you recomend to do to improve the UL30VT? (gpu-clocking is not necssesary since I'm not gaming)

Also i read a post where fendora had replaced his ram with only one stick to reduce power consumption. I was thinking about upgrading to 8 gb of ram. Can the computer handle 1x8gb instead of 2x4? will singlechannel 1333mhz memory be slower than stock dual-channel 1066mhz?

Also i bought 3-rd party battery from china since my stock battery chose to stop working completely (seems to be a usual problem on the Swedish modle, dont know if americans got the same problem). It's working fine, 8 cell 5600mAh gives me about 7 hours with maximum display brightness and on intel graphics and spotify-listening :) Will try to undervolt cpu after reading about fendoras 0.876V to get some extra minutes :)

Lot of questions, mostly interested in the Windows 8 upgrade :)

    Thanks in advance!

    hello,

    i'm a newbie here, but already used UL30VT for almost 2yrs :)

I have a problem with nvidia graphic card. My harddisk just broke and i already replace with a new one, so i need to install a new OS (Win7 64bit) and all the driver. Unfortunately, after that, I can't installed the driver for nvidia graphic card from the CD Driver or even the other driver that i already downloaded from Asus website.

Is there any people here have the same experience with me and can help me? thanks, and sorry for my bad english :D

What does it say when you try to install the driver? Make sure you're installing the hybrid driver and not just the newest Nvidia driver.

Whenever I install the VGA driver, both from Asus or the modified 197.16 one, when booting the desktop icons reset to the left, which is very annoying. Is there a fix?

    hey guys,

I just bought a used UL30VT in Germany and im very satisfied!

To my surprise it came with a matte Display! Since I couldnt believe it myself, I checked which type of Panel it exactly is via HWiNFO64 and I found out, that it is the same as in the sucessor, the PL30 (where it is labeled as Matte).. Its not an extreme matte but rather an Antireflection layer.. I can take pictures of you guys wanna see it, its somewhat unique since I have never heard of an UL30VT with a matte display.. And I really like it, the colors are vibrant and the viewing angles arent too shabby

Heres a pic from the sucessor with the same display: c8eb1b3222.jpg

Anyways, I bought the UL30VT without an HDD, so I had to set up a new HDD and I had alot of problem with the GPU hybrid driver not working at all and not being detected.. To all of you people with problems with the GPU Driver, downgrade your bios to 203! This solved all my problems perfectly! And I found the Solution on these forums! Just download the bios from the support area, put it on an USB Stick and then flash it via Bios (EZ Flash).. Its alot safer than a windows flash!

Now I have some questions, there was someone here who undervolted? Could you explain how you did that? And explain your other energy saving tricks too? And which Power4Gear version would you recommend? I currently use P4G 1.1.25, but I have heard that the 1.1.31 was the last version for the UL30VT

BTW The only thing I really dislike about the Laptop are the hinges, the plastic hinge covers are of very low quality.. Both of mine are still in tact but one of the hinge covers is already slightly movable.. I reinforced them with tape just to be sure, any of you other guys have any tips?

    Thanks :)

I'm not sure if you got a different screen than everyone else did. Mine is glossy, but it's not nearly as glossy as some other laptop screens I've used. I would think yours is the same. Regardless, I'm glad you're happy with your screen. That's the important thing.

I've never tried to undervolt the laptop, but are there not voltage options in the bios?

I personally recommend continuing to use P4G 1.1.25. Some people have had 1.1.31 work, but most haven't (myself included because my laptop came with 1.1.31).

I checked the screen Manufacturer in HWiNFO and it was exactly the same as in the Notebookcheck review of the PL30 (i5 sucessor with matte display).. Luckily they always read out the Manufacturer!

Thats exactly the type of Panel in my UL30VT.. Visually it looks very matte and I cant see an image of myself even under direct light.. so its definetly matte. While it received bad critics on notebookcheck, it also received better critics on another german site notebookjournal..

For me though its really good, its plenty bright and the colors are very nice I think. The viewing angles are only average though

Remember though, its a german UL30VT.. Afaik the only matte versions of the UL30A were distributed in Europe or even just in Germany.. So it could really be an interrim Model or something

Could you read out yours with HWiNFO? Its very easy!

Also how are your hinges? I think they are the biggest con of the notebook

I will try P4G 1.1.31! I think many people here with Driver issues should revert back to bios 203!! The newer Bios versions dont really have any significant upgrades so its not bad to miss out on them

I think its the same Panel as in the UL30A with the matte display.. Here a picture of it:

Probably the previous Owner changed the Display, I cant think of any other explanation

Sorry, I removed the pic, that one picture shows the display good enough!

So could you read out your display number?

And what about your hinge cover quality?

Anyways I tested P4G 1.1.31 and it was kinda buggy, so I reverted back to 1.1.25

Yes, many reports of broken hinges..why yes, I have one. The back tab broke off so I used just a tiny dab of glue to lock it into place from the last re-paste. Note, repaste not wroth it using both AS5 and ICD7. Factory pads were good enough but , ymmv.

After last clean install, I posted the Driver DVD (link still up on SkyDrive) several post back, and installed in listed order or not... but in the listed order. Many posters swear by the newer versions of PG4 but me being lazy, never got around to them. My only issues were that I had to reboot, after sleeping, to get the switching back. I, (now my wife), still on original video drivers. Optimus way over rated!

Hey thanks for all the infos! First of all I would conclude, judging from your LCD Panel Manufacturer, that the previous Owner purposely exchanged the Display with a matte one.. I really dont know how it could be matte otherwise

Now to the hinges, my hinges were luckily fine since the previous Owner treated the notebook very well as it seems, even the glossy bezel of the display is still in good shape and the hinges are pretty solid still.. Just one hinge cover on the left side could slightly be moved with a finger, thats why I precautiously reinforced both hinges with tape completely..

Oh and I dont think that I will be disassembling it.. maybe I will clean the fan from the outside or even just take of the keyboard.. But otherwise I think the hinges are too sensible to break when I try to attempt to disassemble it..

Other than that, I think I will stay with P4G 1.1.25 since I dont see any other big improvements

One last thing, how much power consumption does your UL30VT have on battery (unplugged) in powersaving mode (intel gpu)? You can check that with batterybar for example

My UL30VT takes about 7-8 Watt on idle (with wireless on, a bit below medium brightness) and suddenly jumps up to 9 to 12 watt when I do lightbrowsing! Batterybar shows me alot of different runtimes, but during light browsing more like 5 to 7 hours, even though I am on a full charge (the battery has 9% wear level)

Is that normal, or does my UL30VT suck alot of power? Im not even using the turbo (so its on stock 1.3ghz)

I tried to minimize the powerdrain with throttlestop by forcing it on 0.875 Volt (which is the lowest) but Im not sure if that changed anything. I see you wrote uVolt .9125@1906MHz, is that also with throttlestop?

Thank you so much for your patience!!

Btw are you using a replacement battery? If yes how does it compare? Would you recommend it?

.875 is normal idle. You have to test for lowest locked VID at max hz depending on your game use. Yes, after load testing, I used TS to lock the vid under #1 preset. For quite office and others, P4g does just fine imho.

I have a 12 cell bought on Amazon but not as good as original 8 cell, imho. Not sure what cells are used but bet they are not top tier. You should do real life, not estimated, loads to check your real battery life. Anything you buy, be ready to return it if possible. Nope, no saved times to post. The 12 cell was better than my 2 year old original but way heavier. To be fair, I really need to test new original. I normally get 6 hours at normal settings not watching the loads.

    Enjoy!

I locked it with Throttlestop at 0,875v too under the preset battery and im running it at 1.3ghz max! I think its sufficient after watching the power consumption for some time.. 7 to 8 watt seems to be the lowest other users have reported too

Im not sure if the battery drain of 9% is correct, it could be worse I suspect, so its maybe really time to look for a replacement

there are also 6600mah batteries, maybe I will try them

    thanks again for your help!

I recently mostly successfully installed Win8 Pro on my UL30VT. I cannot guarantee that there are the exact right steps. Also, there are probably some steps that can be skipped because I’m writing down everything that I can remember doing.

    1. Backup all your files (just in case)
    2. Rebuild Windows 7 using ASUS recovery
    3. Uninstall most bundled software that isn’t drivers: games, Windows Live Essentials, Kindle for PC, etc.
    4. Make sure your system is plugged in and that you are connected to the Internet
    5. Download and run the Upgrade Assistant from Microsoft Windows
    6. Choose to upgrade to Windows 8 keeping both files & settings
    7. After the upgrade, you will have crappy resolution and the Hybrid Graphics app will be missing
    8. Open Device Manager (Win+X, then click “Device Manager”)
    9. Both display adapters (Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family and NVIDIA GeForce G210M) are shown as “failed to load”
    10. Right-click the NVIDIA GeForce adapter and choose Disable
    11. Unplug the laptop, it may flash but should come back to the crappy resolution screen
    12. Restart the laptop
    13. You may have the native resolution back (1366x768) already but keep following along
    14. Download both files in the VGA section of Windows 7 64-bit Downloads page on ASUS’s website: ASUS Service for North America (there’s a “VGA patch” file, and the original “nVidia Graphics Driver” version V8.15.11.8688); unzip them both
    15. Open a Command Prompt and run silent.bat in the VGA_Patch folder
    16. You should reboot again, even if you’re not asked to, keep your laptop unplugged
    17. When Windows 8 starts again, you may be back to crappy resolution
    18. Open Device Manager
    19. Right click on the Mobile Intel display adapter (which might still have the “failed to load” icon) and choose “Update driver software”
    20. Choose “Search automatically,” and Windows 8 should find the correct driver online
    21. Reboot again just to be sure, Windows should start with the native resolution
    22. Open Device Manager
    23. Mobile Intel display adapter should look normal, the NVIDIA one should still be disabled (it may have even changed names to Basic Display Adapter or something)
    24. Install the nVidia WIN7 64-bit driver by running setup.exe, this will install the NVIDIA driver properly and re-install the Hybrid Graphics software
    25. Shut down, plug in, restart, and Windows 8 should boot with the NVIDIA chip running; unplugging correctly switches to the Mobile Intel adapter; HDMI output also works; the only major issue I can see is that your Desktop background doesn’t always refresh when you drop into the Desktop from the Start screen. Ctrl+A on the desktop or any full screen desktop app will clear it up.
    26. Aside: To delete the Windows.old folder (my almost empty upgrade was greater than 12 GB): How do I remove the Windows.old folder?

I'm pretty sure there is a WAYYY simpler way. I am also on Windows 8 Pro

Step 1: Clean Install Windows 8 Pro
Step 2: Grab the latest P4GH here ( ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download P4GHybrid)

Step 3: Grab the latest ATK Package here ( ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download ATK_package)

Step 4: Grab the latest Realtek audio driver here ( ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download Audio)
MAKE SURE THE TITLE OF THE DOWNLOAD IS "Realtek Audio Driver"
THERE ARE OTHER AUDIO DRIVERS IN THE FOLDER AS WELL

Step 5: Install the hybrid graphics driver if you need it. As mentioned above you will have glitches that started back in W8 Consumer Preview.

    Or

Just use the intel driver if you don't need the graphics card. I installed the latest (306) graphics driver which I am guessing is idling my graphics card relatively low. I end up with 7-8 hours of battery life this way and its perfectly stable!

Just installed Windows 8 Pro 32-bit, and tried both ways to install GPU driver, and noone of them worked.
First: in device manager it doesnt show to me both GPUs
Second: It says "your system doesnt have minimal requirements" or something like this when installing Intel GPU driver. (i even tried to run it in compatibility mode)
Anyone have any other ideas how to fix it?

I read somewhere that UL30VT support 8gb RAM, can anyone comfirm that? (on official page it says 4 gb)

In my case, Windows 8 64-bit detected both devices and installed drivers. The nvidia driver was practically the latest version since nvidia pushed a driver during consumer preview. After that the device was recognized I was able to install the latest on top of it.

I am running 8gb of ram but the 64 bit version of windows 8.

Thanks for the instructions on the win 8 installation from scratch in the previous page. So you are able to switch into discrete graphics when needed? I was considering getting win 8 upgrade and seeing if everything will be kosher. anyone else use win 8 upgrade? Thanks, everyone.

Bump for an answer. Would really be nice if the graphics switch worked well on the ul30vt

I had an asus with a puma amd chipset with HD3200/HD3650 switchable graphics that really didnt want to play nicely when I went from VISTA to Win 7. ended up draining my battery as both graphics chipsets would be active with no really easy way to use one or the other exclusively.

Thanks for those simple instructions! You mention the "latest (306) graphics driver". Is that on the ASUS support site like the other drivers you mentioned? If not, where do we get it? Sorry, I should know this, but I haven't done any driver installation since right after getting this laptop almost 3 years ago! Thanks.

Does anyone know of working touchpad drivers for Windows 8? I tried downloading a few and they did not install. I need some drivers with palm tracking so that the touchpad doesn't jump all the time while typing. It would also be nice to get some of the Windows 8 gestures.

Also, has anyone gotten a recent Nvidia driver to work on W8? I originally did an upgrade from Windows 7 with old Nvidia drivers and the Nvidia drivers were still there after upgrading, but I uninstalled them since the background was not getting properly refreshed (apparently this is a bug you have to put up with?).

How did you install optimus? Did you ever format the hard drive, or replace the hard drive?

Hey, I have the same issue with my touchpad and the cursor randomly jumping around while typing.
I've tried several drivers, but none of them had the palm tracking option available.
Did you find a working driver for windows 8?

After several tries, I still didn't got hybrid graphics switching to work right on Windows 8. I can get propertly working Intel GPU, which is sufficent for my needs. But problem is that even if I'm using just Intel GPU, nVidia still suck the power. I used powermeter to determine that. Its sucking tipical idle power for Windows 7 with discrete GPU on. Also this could be noticed by slightly lower battery time, about 5,5 h compared to 9+ hours. Also fan is constantly working...
I tried all methods of installing GPU drivers for Win 8 mentioned in this thread, in every one of them it fails to install.
My question now is, is it possible to somehow turn off discrete GPU by some kind of script or program. If anyone have this kind of knowledge I would kindly appreciate this.
I googled and found that Linux users can't use nVidia, because there is no drivers. But nVidia GPU still suck power no matter if its not used. So they figured way to turn off nVidia GPU by some kind of program. Is it possible to convert this to be Windows compatible? Or anyone has an idea how to turn nVidia off?

    Hello Everyone!

    I have 2 laptops; one a UL30VT-A1 and other a Gateway NV5927U.
Both I believe max out at 8 GB RAM. Both currently have 2 x 2 GB modules (stock). I can get Corsair 2 x 4 GB upgrade for each at 39.99 for each laptop or get 2 x 8 GB for 72.62 and put single 8 GB stick in each.

Cost different isn't a huge benefactor, but wondering if single 8 GB in each is good or bad in terms of performance? Please let me know..

The Gateway is running Windows 8 and the Asus is running Windows 7 (will upgrade to 8 soon)

I'm not sure if the ul30vt will be able to handle 8gb, atleast on a single module.

8gb on a single module is a bit less efficient than 2*4gb, but in reality, you will not see a difference.

You probably won't see a difference between 4 and 8gb on this machine, actually. The cpu should be the first limitation factor.

I don't see a difference between my asus ul30vt and my G53 (i7 2630QM, 8gb) for web browsing, eclipse programming, etc. Only in game.=')

Hey, my UL30vt's screen recently conked out. Second time actually, first time was covered in warranty. Since I really like this thing and it's going strong, I'd like to fix it.

Easy to replace and I see that parts are cheap, around $60 for a screen over the internet (or similar for a cable... unfortunately I don't know which conked).

However, I'd really like get a better screen for it if possible, the viewing angle was the one big ongoing problem I had. (OK and now the weight... but got to forgive it, it's aging gracefully).

Does anyone know of a better, compatible screen I could get instead? Even better, a touchscreen, I think this thing would handle win8 just fine, but I'd want a touchscreen for that...

Really appreciate any leads for either question. Thanks

    Hi!

Unfortunately, there are not many good 13 inches screen... (You can find plenty of nearly perfect 15 inches though).
I wouldn't know wich reference to buy in order to have good viewing angles. :/

As for the touchscreen, iirc, it's very difficult to find a touchscreen kit for 13 inches screens. (7,9 and 10 inches are the most common).

Off topic but Fendora I wanted to ask you a few questions. Im about to reinstall windows 7 on asus ul30vt-x1k. I saw your bios update. What does this exactly change? If I could use it, how do I install it? Do I install it before or after my reformat?

Is this the best ram I could buy for this laptop speed wise? Is there anything I should know before installing the ram myself? I looked at the 'manual' from wiki and what is that black filmy strip over the ram modules? Do I remove that?

Thank you, sorry for 21 questions. I love this laptop, just wanted to improve on its performance! Next is a SSD.

Thanks Fendora. So it doesn't look hopeful for a better screen. The touchscreen I thought might be a stretch. Looks like I'll order a new replacement screen in a few weeks, unless anyone else has a suggestion...

One other question. Is there any way I can work out if it's the screen, or the video cable, that needs replacing? (If it was a pc I'd just swap parts in and out... I don't have any laptop bits). Basically, it went very dim, now it is just noise on the screen and the panel buzzes. I can't see any physical damage anywhere, but the cable was exposed for a few weeks before, when the case cracked off that corner...

It seems like my ul30vt is reaching its time of death. Battery just stopped charging, the case is developing cracks everywhere (I already had to tape the screen's case together), etc.
I'm going to miss this guy. But a better display resolution is something I'm greatly looking forward to. Has any of you guys moved on to a new 13" machine? I'm thinking of going with another Asus, the ux32vd with a full hd screen.

Does anyone know the connections of the ul30vt's motherboard in detail? Is there any chance I could end up using this thing as a little home server? Is the wifi card a miniPCI connection that I could use for SATA to connect additional HDDs (I'd have to completely disassemble the case and put the mobo into something else, I'm sure)? Or anything else along those lines? Any suggestions? :)

Hi. I just bought a used UL30VT and it's acting up. For the first couple of days it worked fine. I installed a 4GB RAM and OCZ Agility 3, both of which worked fine on my old computer. Right now, the computer shuts itself down every 30 minutes - 1 hr and it's very annoying. I don't see any other problems. I've only installed the drivers from the Asus site, Firefox, Foxit, and Microsoft Security essentials. What should I do? The computer doesn't give error reports, so I would upload error reports, but I don't have any from the laptop.

I'm shocked to hear this, I wasn't having any issues like this before I sent it to you. Hopefully we can figure out what is causing this without you having to buy any replacement parts or anything. Let's do some troubleshooting. Have you tried re-seating the ram? What are you usually doing when it shuts down? Gaming? Browsing the internet? Does device manager report any errors or unknown devices? Does it shut down if you boot the laptop in safe mode? Does this happen on battery, on ac power, on ac power with the battery taken out?

If this had happened to me while I had it it would have driven me nuts. Right now the laptop I'm using seems to have a failing ethernet port, so I feel your pain and since I used to own your laptop I'll try to help as much as I can. Let me know how it goes with some of the above troubleshooting.
