Sooo you have 3 identical monitors laying about?
I can tell you as a desktop 5870 owner that the mobile version is not going to have enough power to push 3 monitors for any modern game it would have to be a pretty simple one and using a notebook would feel rather awkward rather than 3 identical desktop monitors.
There are still a lot of limitations with eyefinity, it requires currently on the desktop version a displayport capable monitor (or an semi expensive adapter) all 3 monitors must use the same resolution and orientation, and of course for gaming it takes a ton of power. -
Mmm..ok thanks! I'll use 3 monitor with my desktop as soon as possible!

There is always the hardware option like the Matrox Triple Head 2 Go, it will work with any laptop for 3 monitors.

.... sigh
... why do people get paid to review stuff when they have abosolutly no clue what the hell they are talking about.
Cinebench is a CPU bound benchmark and they are using that as a basis to call the 5870 the fastest video card out there.
3dmark06 has been CPU bound since like 2 years ago on high end machines, the machine with the fastest cpu will get the higher score, it has a 2.8ghz i7 inside of it, of coruse it beat the 4870 with a C2Q...
If the 4870 had the i7 it would have gotten the same score.... I am really just so tired of beating the dead horse about proper benchmarking and even the "professionals" cant get it right.
I may be getting one of these, depends if I can sell my w90, look forward to a real review with proper testing if I do. -
Aye, 3dm06 is pittiful that its still used on high end machines today,
We need some raw vantage runs.
Although the w90 would still tear this appart to be honest, your really best off keeping it. -
They'll keep doing 3DMark06 as long as people keep asking for it.
-
How well does the Matrox work and it is easy as they claim on there website. I have seen it as an upgrade on the resellers web pages.
Thanks -
I don't care too much about actual multiple monitors, but I sure hope it supports one external monitor showing different content from the built-in screen. Not for gaming, as I don't have any illusions that the card will be powerful enough to handle that, but I use that type of config when I'm coding, and I'd go insane if I had to go back to one monitor.
-
On the same line as Kamidari's thought, can you play a game using the ATI card on an external monitor? I would assume so, but if not...

Hey everyone, after lurking for awhile, I've decided this is the laptop I'll be going for as soon as my paypal account is ready for it (which should only be a few days, I'm excited)
But I do have 2 questions.
1. The battery life. I saw that chart from Asus with the 173 minutes, and well, I'm impressed. How realistic do you think that is? I only worry because I plan to take this thing to university to take notes in lectures and whatnot. I know it's not the best thing for this, but I don't really want a netbook too. If I'm just typing stuff up, maybe browsing the net, will this thing last ~2hrs? I know it's hard to know already, but just some guesses would be nice.
2. I'm going on a trip to Hong Kong at the end of march (I leave the 26th) and I'd love to have this to use on the plane. I'm in Canada, but I want to customize it, so I'll be ordering from the states. I like Xotic because of the options and prices, but is the backup gonna be too much? Should I go with someone else who's had less orders? I'll probably call a couple places before I order, but if anyone already knows, it'd save me some work.
Thanks everyone. I know some of these questions have been touched on before, but some of the answers I saw were older/not enough for me. -
first congratulations.
now the questions,
1) It's kind of hard to guess what the battery life would be honestly.
This thing is equipped with i7 processor and a mobility 5870. This was never designed for "portability" you know?
I'm guessing maybe an hour and a half? at most 2hours.
2) Well you're going on a trip to Hong Kong at the end of march, so it shouldn't be a problem. -
Thanks.
I'm just wondering how the heck they got nearly 3hrs on that test then. Does anyone know what that "reader mode" is?
I think I'll just get an extra battery. It might be a pain to switch in the middle of class, but I'll gladly put up with it, 'cause the alternative is the AW M15x, and for this level of performance, it's a lot more expensive. -
Roland@XoticPC Company Representative
"Reader mode" or "Power Saver" is more than likely just reading web page documentation, word documents, or PDF files, etc....with the brightness turned completely down and very minimal power usage. In this setting I'd estimate around a max of 2 hours battery life. -
Just a note, you're probably not going to be able to use this in a plane, especially if you're flying cattle class.
-
Very true, this thing is rather large and not meant to be "portable" its meant as a desktop replacement and for those that will travel to game with friends and what not so they are not dragging there desktop around all over the place...
-
Howdy all. I'm in. Glad to be here.

Welcome, Hope you ordered your Machine and hopefully you will thoroughly enjoy it with the rest of us when its released in 2 weeks

Here is the error I got when trying to DL the Manual from ASUS
"Due to too many customers are downloading files through our network currently, you might be going to experience slower download speed. We also provide P2P download which will be much faster. Would you like to try it?"
Think this baby ain't popular ' > ) -
Yup. Tim at Powernotebooks helped me out considerably. Been asking questions about notebooks for months. Top notch service there.
Anyways, I, like the rest of you, am on pins and needles waiting for my new toy. I watched the CeBit vid, and man, it looks even better than in the pics. -
When this thing arrives I might not be on for couple of days.
I've been waiting for this for almost a month now. I'm dying here with 4years old desktop. -
Kim,
I think thats the same for all of us!! We may initially post that we received it, then vanish into the night like a silent, stealth bomber
Pun Intended

Welcome to the party!
Yepper, it's popular! But as far as the manual, it somewhat a waste..... more like a 'Quick Start' guide, and a brief one at that.

You can find more info, vids, and pics here!

Yeah, that's where I found the CeBit vid. Good stuff, sir. I have been lurking the site for a long time now (more than a year, to be certain) and I have always been impressed with the level of expertise the average user seems to exhibit. Considering some of the other forums I am on, it's like a whole different animal.
Quick question, is there a "probationary" type period where you have limited access to signatures and pm's and the like? -

I think it's like 15 or so post.

Right on, thank you.

Actually its 5 posts, then you have to wait for the system to refresh itself (could take up to a couple hours) before you can PM

Try an 8-year old desktop

I don't even have my computer here in California!!! I'm with an I-pod touch and a computer of a friends with 1gb ram and vista. I let you guess how slow it is..!!!

Howdy all. Just sold my w90vp (for about $600 less than I payed for it, of course). I found it was just too big, unwieldy and power hungry for any normal use other than a desktop replacement... and I already have a desktop. Was thinking about switching to a Macbook Pro, but saw the G73JH and was like F that.
So, for those who ordered from Xotic, when are you guys expecting it? Also, is there an official release date (sorry if I missed this in the thread)?
After being burned on the -backwards support on the w90, is the concensus that Asus (and ATI) will actually support this model? -
Just be advised you seem to not want a desktop replacement laptop based on what you said, this is a desktop replacement type of laptop...
-
I second what legacy said.
G73jh is going to be the same as what you mentioned here. power hungry, big, and unwieldy.
if you're looking for a laptop for a normal use, this laptop is not for you. -
If your looking for more normal user friendly type of use, maybe you need to look into getting the newer ones with the i3/i5 in them that should be a bit more portable and useable for that sense that you seem to want it for.

Preordered on 1/21 from Power
Donald helped with a lot of questions and i hope im in the first batch
cant wait like everyone else and have been reading this thread and the other big one to kill time
and learn things...
also went to a bestbuy today and saw some older asus gaming machines and got more anxious for the g73
im pretty sure i made the right decision choosing this laptop...what eases the concerns are the great resellers here who actually care and the members here who will help one another when challenges and issues arise... -

As for the ETA, at this time ASUS has provided ETA's of 2/10, 2/17 and 3/9 and another shipment coming by sea that has yet to be confirmed. -
Hey guys I need some help. I've decided this is undoubtedly the laptop for me. I love the gaming ability, the 17" screen, and the BlueRay. I will be ordering it when I return from work Feb 5th. What I need your help with is this: I wanted to order the unit with the 80G SSD, Wireless Intel Card upgrade (assuming 3 antennas), and the Diamond thermal grease. That brings the pricetag to $1979. This is fine, although I live in Alberta Canada. I'd like to know what taxes I have to pay on top of the pricetag, (duty, GST, etc) My other option is to order from a Canadian company, but I am then forced to purchase the laptop stock since no one offers customizations here. This is my first online purchase so excuse my ignorance! Please offer any suggestions or help I appreciate it!

Hey Skiim, welcome to the forum.
Your question was answered back on page 69 with this post -
If I were you, I'd get a HP Envy or maybe wait for a macbook, if you're alright with paying a premium.

I've been looking for a notebook to replace my aging Asus G1S X3, and stumbled upon this site several weeks ago. After reading as many threads as I could, I stumbled upon this thread, as well as the 400+ page thread, and have now made my decision. Thanks everyone for the useful chatter.
I just sold my Asus for $340 (hope I didn't rip my buddy off) and will preorder my G73 tomorrow. But here's my question.......
Now, I have read each of the 400+ pages and all 79 from this thread, but can't remember where I read about someone talking about a vendor having more pre-order stock left because of his higher prices. I see there are only 4 US dealers listed in the 1st post. So, does anyone have the site to the dealer who I might still be able to get in on the 1st shipment? I clicked through each of the 4 US links, but they all are within $50 of each other.
I'll be ordering the default setup, no changes.
TIA -

Sadly, there is really no way to know which of us might have a slot open from the 1st shipment, but the honest answer is probably none of us.
My best guess would be your best shot would be the 2nd shipment, but until they are actually in the US, and we find out what our allotments are, no one can tell you for sure.
The best answer is to choose your reseller based on their customer service record, and make a phone call to each to see which one you like best. Then place your order to get in line and hope for the best. -

To give you a little additional detail you have a couple options with shipping carriers. As others have reported on the forums if you go with USPS they only charge a $5 Brokerage Fee and the shipping rates are very reasonable. When choosing any UPS Expedited services brokerage fees are waived (UPS Ground charges you a brokerage fee). After brokerage you are only responsible for local provinces taxes (GST/PST). You can call UPS at 1-800-782-7892 and they can help provide a quote on taxes you would pay based on your location in Alberts so you have a good estimate on the total cost. Here is a GST/PST table FYI. -
Thanks for the suggestions. I actually did have a 17" 7811-FX for a year and a G51 for a hot minute and both actually worked out really well for me. For some reason, I found the w90vp too much to travel with. Plus, from experience, while a 17" will just fit on an airline seat tray, 18.4 is just a bit too big. To be sure, I am looking for a gaming laptop, just not one that is over 10lbs.
I guess I could make due with the 9600 GT in a macbook pro, but when I look at the cost premium (apple tax) compared to what you get with the G73 fuggetaboutit. I have the money, but I still have common sense too
-
I gotta ask is it typical for computer manufacturers to wait this long to tell resellers what they will be getting? As of today we are exactly 2 weeks from the estimated first shipment. It just seems odd to me that Asus would not give the resellers any idea as to what to expect when it's coming up so soon.
To be honest I would not mind if the ETA was delayed if Asus needed some more time to figure things out, better to make it right the first time. On the other hand, with only 2 weeks to go you would think they would have worked out all the details with distribution partners and begun full scale production.
Only a few days ago notebookcheck.com did the review and they referred to the G73 they had as a prototype, which I would assume is what Asus referred to it as. Would a company really be showing off prototypes 2 weeks prior to release. I mean even games are finished 2-3 weeks before release and all they need to do is stamp disks. I would think laptop manufacturing would be a much more complex process with figuring out supply lines and the like. Maybe it is just me, but something doesn't feel right, either the G73 is much further from release than anyone expects or Asus has something to gain by not revealing info
-
No offense intended, but I think you may be overthinking things. A lot of companies I have dealt with will have various "builds" of the things they are developing. Any one of these builds is considered a prototype until actual release. For instance, using your game analogy, they are finished 2 to 3 weeks prior to release. A fact, to be certain. However, when you look at the previews on Gamespot, IGN, and the like, they always throw that disclaimer in there that "This is not the finished product/This is an early build/Can't wait to play the full version" etc. They do that because it IS possible (but not likely) that at the last moment, some tester will find some showstopping bug and things will get delayed a week.
It could be that you are right, however, my instinct (and experience) tells me that there are a lot of variables in this equation, and I have seen no reason to hit the panic button, as it were. Suffice to say, ASUS only makes money when they sell us things, and it's in their own best interest to get the things we've purchased to us as soon as possible, or people may cancel their orders. -
To be honest I know I am over thinking things simply because there is nothing much else to talk about on these forums with the lack of new info. I will take that game analogy a little further since it is something I have followed longer than laptops. If a game has not achieved gold status within 2 weeks of release wouldn't you be a little squeamish about their ETA. I guess my real question would be: Do laptop manufacturers have something analogous to "gold status" and do they typically cut it so close?
-
Now that is a good question. I wonder if it's all internal, like they are aiming at a number set by themselves? Interesting.
-
From what I can tell these are starting to trickle out into the world market; ASUS may find it better for customer satisfaction to service fully a smaller market, say Germany, than thinly stock a big one (US).
As for how many they can make remember the GPU is brand new and is probably on allocation from ATI, availability of other parts may be an issue as well.
