Not to try to talk you out of the G73 but the MacBook Pro line may be refreshed within a few hours. Now that Win7 doesn't suck dead bunnies like Vista did hopefully the folk at the fruit company will realize their "tax" needs to come down - significantly. When the refresh does happen expect new CPUs, hopefully new GPUs, and very hopefully lower prices.

    Just sayin'...

I'm aware of the event happening in a couple hours :) However, I seriously doubt the new line will be sporting any GPUs to write home about. Probably, at best, a GTX 360M or a low-end 5xxx mobility.

Thing with the cost is, they'll need to come down at least 20% in cost for them to compete with the price/performance of something like a G73 -- not something I see happening.

Thats true, but that still is weird that Asus is soft-launching this model. There is no mention of G73JH on the AsusTek website nor the Republic of Gamers website. I think "Introducing the most powerful single graphics card in the world" would be pretty catchy on the main page, but no, there are no mentions of it. Something makes me think they are trying to let the stock of G72GX go down before they begin to fully market the G73.

Makes sense when I think about it. If you have a product(A) for a price X and then you make a better product(B) which also costs X, then A will not sell after people know about B. I guess it makes sense, Microsoft does the same thing with Xbox revisions, the newest version just appears with no fanfare, otherwise the older stock will never get sold unless it is heavily discounted.

So the question remains, what's wrong with practical business practices? Along the same line, what is the point of your post?

It's refreshing to see someone with disposable income still have their common sense intact. I wouldn't buy a Mac for the same reason I wouldn't buy an AlienWare. You pay a tax for the name and the reputation which is often not as good as it's owner's would have you believe.

Just talking it out, man. Sometimes a post is kind of like musing to yourself; You do it out loud, and even though it's not REALLY meant for anyone else, it can lead to some good conversations. :)

To answer your first question, nothing. :p

While we do enjoy good discussions here we all try to stay away from throwing flames.

Just musing aloud like and hoping someone had something to say on the subject like Lhiannon said. Beats talking about the iPad or whatever the oversized iPod Touch is called.

Well, not today. But the iPad pricing was more aggressive than most expected, so hope springs eternal that the next Apple computer updates will offer more for quite a bit less.

if my comment came off as a flame, I appologize.

I was just playing the devils advocate and asking if he meant anything by his comment. It would seem pretty straight forward for a company to try to lower their stock levels of an older model before releasing a newer one, so the meaning behind my question was just informational.

Yes it is Hydeo, but the point he is making is that people are posting meaningless things in an unrelated thread therefore chocking it up and making us that look in there for information have to read through several pages of nothingness and just random banter.

Edit: Using my double post to answer my own question

OCing the crap out of this system to see how far it goes before it gets unstable. Gaming (duh) with COD:MW2, Borderlands, Mass Effect 2, L4D2, CS:S, Crysis, DA:O, etc etc. And possibly see if I can also mod the system.

Like we talked about: Install Fraps, bench the HELL outta some games (Oblivion, LEft for Dead 2, Dragon Age, COD : MW2) and take heat reading.

I will also be trying to break this thing without actually dropping it. I want to push the thermal system to the max and see how well it was designed.

on a side note to this all, I got the IC24 thermal compound. What I want to know, how do I "burn" it in properly when I get it so it bonds properly.

    BTW evensen007,

I was following your SSD info..... good stuff, and very helpful. I have also heard that TRIM will not work properly if SSD's are in a RAID0 set. What is your take on this?

I was tossing this about for my G73JH..... I realize this would be overkill, but MAN would it be fast! Just a thought.....

    Thanks!

    :)

No problem; I love learning new things!

To answer your question: No, you can't TRIM in raid.

    http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?56307-Trim-Raid-0

This would line up with the discussion I had with Mandrake about having to use MS storage drivers to allow Trim pass-through commands.

Raid requires the manufacturer storage driver which is a problem to begin with for Trim. Add raid complexities, and it's a no-go... : (

One of Ic Diamond's draws is that it cures to max efficiency almost instantly as opposed to Arctic Silver which cures over a period of weeks.

You don't have to do anything special. Game the hell outta the system and that should suffice.

ooh, much better than my open ended question. :p

I'll just start USING it to game. I'm curious how it'll compare against my desktop machine, so I'll probably run some benchmarks, and read this forum for advice on squeezing performance out of it :) Maybe get into some OC'ing, but I'll let other more adventurous people lead the way on that concept ;)

To replace my desktop, I'll have to get a new USB TV Tuner, and a new USB Sound card (didn't order the upgrade one through xoticpc, too expensive).

I was a little worried as I know AS products take a little more time. On my desktops at home I use the AS Ceramic Compound and it has a small curing time and stuff... Thanks for the answer though!

Besides taking it apart to see what makes it tick...
I should have my M17x before then so I plan on doing single card runs with the 4870 and comparing the performance with the 5870. I will also test OC capabilities of the 5870....then have a benchmarking competition with The_Moo. ;)

With the low thermal TDP of the 5870m I am guessing we will have phenomenal overclocking results, which will bring it more in line with the desktop 5770 than the 5750. Can't wait for the more experienced over-clockers to put a hurtin' on this machine!

when I get the G73 I plan to wipe both disks, install Ubuntu on one, and Win7 on the other. Hopefully I will not run into any messy driver issues under Linux!

Once that is done use Linux for work and general use and boot Win7 for games.

There is a command line hack that forces Battlefield 2 into a widescreen (HD) rez. I run it at 1920x1080 all the time. It's not perfect, but pretty darn close.

What is this "burn" in ya talking about? I have mine ordered with the IC diamond. Do i have to take it to the limit for it to do any good or something? Like when you buy a new cell phone let its battery completely deplete before the first chare or something?

Ok, I have an OC'd beast of a desktop right now (17000 3dMark06 Score), but I always thought that notebooks were like "The place that angels fear to tread" as far as OC'ing goes...turns out I'm wrong? What kind of gains would one be hoping to see on the stock g73? Are you OC'ing the proc, or the GPU?
