i posted a comment when some one asked how do you update your drivers and where and i snapped back and said "why did you just spend 3000 if you dont even know how to use it"
humm boredom -
Lets just hope he figures it out on his own . The only way to truly learn something is dive in head first and make a few mistakes but in the long run it will only benefit you for the future.
Totally off topic but i snagged this picture last night from yahoo . its a lady from some old night time soap opera like knots landing or dallas or one of those shows . The younger crowd wont recognize her but dear god i was horrified when i saw this pic.

Maybe Vicious can work a W90 somewhere in the pic for a great avatar

Not really a trick per say, just download that latest beta Win7 ATI 9.4 driver and run it in Vista , that will give you the current CCC we needed for our drivers. When you run the driver it wont install the drivers for the Card but will just install the ATI control panel . Now if you were running Win7 it actually is just a straight install drivers and all with crossfire etc.

Cant PS at work though till I get my new W90 but if I find some freetime at home...
As for drivers and stuff, its pretty much broken down into the most basic steps and includes screen shots with a snip tool already in the guide.
The only thing I have to add is how to install the new CCP with the drivers for those that want the option to turn on/off crossfire at will.
I wonder if there is a way to compile our own installer so it installs the new drivers & CCC all in one go?
At the very least I could make a .bat file that copies the modified .inf files to the right place for you. -

He was just trying to say in a nice way that everything you were asking for you were already supplied and you just need to hash it over for yourself a bit until you figure it out, and if its something you cant do then not to rack your brain over it.
Quad has major respect from me as he has given alot to everybody on these forums with his help on the W90 and he is also I noticed a very mature and level headed person.
If you need help you got it from all of us, so lets tone it back down to friendly level ok? -

well then disregard
im about to crash and I am half asleep reading while in bed so I was kinda browsing the forums. -
Thanks for the kind words Vicious and to wwoods yes were here to help to the best of our ability . If you dont have much luck figuring out how to get the drivers installed etc, just google stuff like have disk method for driver install, replacing infs for ATI drivers etc . that will probably be the easiest method as there are lots of guides out there on all that stuff . Again you may already know all this stuff so its all for nothing but either way all that info is available on the web if ya get stuck.

Hi All,
I had previously posted the below in the "what to buy" forum, but thought it may be helpful to hear from the W90 enthusiasts first hand.
I am new to this forum, however, I have done a significant amount of research and have narrowed down the choices to Sager NP5797 or ASUS W90Vp ($2500 budget gaming laptop).
I am looking to buy a solid gaming laptop that will last me for around 3 years (with upgrades in CPU, memory and GPU). I play (or will be playing) WOW, Fallout, Various Strategy Games and the upcoming Diablo 3 and SC2 (I do not play first person shooters).
My goal is to max out WOW on highest settings with a solid frame rate. I know that both of these machines will do the job, my concern primarily is for the upcoming games and reliability.
I previously purchased ASUS W90Vp-X1 from newegg which was DOA and had some missing cables (I suspect it was someone else's RMA unit, it was a battle to get my money back) so I am quite leery of buying Asus again. Nonetheless, W90 is very tempting in terms of what you get for the $. Based on my understanding, the Asus will outperform (graphically at least) the Sager due to a more powerful GPU array.
What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance. -
i was just sharing experences .... we are all equal here and can learn from person to person.
i wasn't refering to you with the driver comments i was refering to soem one else and he literally didn't know the difference between quad and dual and how to install drivers and thought that the video cards were one one pcb board because it said 3870x2 -
For certain go with the W90 . You have seen it in person so you know what to expect interms of its sheer size and weight . GPU wise it will crush the 5797 . The sager is a great machine and all but it wont hold a candle to the power of the 2 gpus in the W90. Your third option might be to wait for the M98 coming from Clevo/sager which will have 2x280m gtxs though i think its going to go way over the 2500 mark of your budget to have one with 2 GPUs in it . -
I just finished watching "dawn of the dead" blu ray.. -
I wish I had an option to downgrade A-1 to not have a blue ray player and a second HD (neither of which I need). Newegg is selling X-2, but I aint buying from them ever again.
I was thinking about buying from xoticpc, but the wait is so long -
I opened up the back and lost where to look for the cables..
By the way, my gpus had thermal pad instead of thermal paste. -
-
Is it a cable connection or actual card connected to a slot?
Can you tell me in detail how you perform the steps?
I got lost right after opened the back cover.. don't know where to start.. -

First I must say dont be turned away at Asus for the problem that happened blame the egg for that. You will see many of us state repeatedly that its very much worth it to buy from an authorized Asus dealer like GentechPC or Xotic if for no other reason than customer care and ease of returns and things of that nature.
If your looking for the best gaming laptop for the $$$ I think that the W90 is for sure the one to get, however I would not be able to name any laptop that you can say will be great at gaming 3 years out.
Tech & games move too fast for any single unit to hold ground for that long, even a high end desktop wont be maxing out a new game in 3 years. It should still be playing games just fine given you lower the settings but dont expect it to be the monster max out everything machine that it is now.
Also dont put any hope into upgrades for the Ram or Gpu, a Ram upgrade is not going to do you any good, and a gpu upgrade is probably not going to happen. The cpu can be upgraded, but the gains are only marginal depending on your task.
Many of us were trying to sail the laptop upgrade ship with the C90S, a barebone unit that was actually advertised as upgradable and we all sunk and had to swim to shore, so a model like this that is not intended for upgrading most probably will not see any future expansions.
That said take it for what it is, its a very solid, good looking, powerfull desktop replacment unit.
I am very happy with mine, even though I had to RMA it for a bad video card and am glad I got it, but I understand that it will be trumped by a new machine in less than a years time and a good desktop is still going to be the place to be for high end gaming. -

I have seen that guy work magic
Asus HQ probably has 2 phone lines, the everybody phone line, then the big red phone just for Ken, its like Red Alert when he makes a move. -
BTW, any WOW players around here? Whats the frame rate in raids with everything turned up on this machine? I don't think wow supports crossfire though. -
Thanks -

WoW likes RAM and you have 6GB of it, that will really help with the lag you normally have when lots of things start loading on screen, and I think it does support crossfire. -

Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound on GPU: $29

If your even semi skilled in working with computer hardware you can do it yourself later for cheaper.
As for where to get from, I say Gentech, you already spoke with him and he was nice enough to help you so your obligated IMO to reward him for his time and kindness.
Thats kinda how I work anyways, I wont go to one car parts place and ask them what parts I need for my car and how to fix it, and then go across the street to buy the parts. -

I was thinking of trying that new stuff that was being mentioned not too long ago forget the name but supposed to be like AS5 in performance but much easier to apply and non conductive.
personally the best temps I ever saw was with a liquid metal pad, and it has fool proof installation.
Pretty sure the compound I am thinking about is MX-2
I think the lust for high end cooling compound and ice cold temps is a residue left on us from the past days like Pentium 4, where the cpu ran so hot that it actually interfered with your overclocking limits. However todays gpu's and cpu's run so cool compared to there max temp thresholds that it doesnt matter.
Not until you push way way more voltage into them than normal and go for insane world record benches is it going to matter, and at that point your using liquid nitrogen to cool.
I have yet to see temps be the limiting factor in overclocking or stability for a modern system. Though needed for overvolting for sure for safty of your equipment, but in those cases the cooler used is more important than the TIM.
Bottom line as long as the temps are in a safe normal operating area, better paste for a 2 or even 3c drop in temps is not going to do anything for you, nothing at all. -
I am thinking about putting AS5 on it after great pictures from Jamiee ( Thank You Jamiee )
Do you think it's worth it for me to do it?
I think my computer runs cool enough right now and not sure AS5 gonna make it any difference. My CPU runs at 30s at idle and GPU at 56c at idle.
-
And What is the safe normal temp range for quads in w90?
and how about GPU and HDD? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
The W90 seems to keep everything very cool by laptop (even desktop) standards, I see no reason to upgrade paste, though if your taking your machine apart for any reason like I just did last night to reseat my video cards, your going to want to apply some new paste while your at it. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
However the laptop you cant really overvolt, and the minor amount you can is not going to make the temps go up much. the 15% overclock mode does add voltage to my Q9000 but temps stay almost the same as with stock voltage.
You do not need to overvolt for any reason if your stable with your overclock, you only add voltage for a higher overclock, though since your overclocking the notebook via FSB you may find yourself at the mercy of the system or ram limits before you hit the cpu limits.
on a desktop you can bypass those limits by changing the FSB:RAM divider in the bios, or by changing ram timings. -
About to order now from Ken. He told me about the pre-test option, should I go for it?
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
That sounds like a personal choice, do you like to gamble?
Me personally I would just get the unit with no testing and put my faith in asus since they have the great warrenty and free RMA service, save me a bit of money and time.
However if you did end up getting a bad unit due to bad luck, im sure at that point you will tell yourself you should have done the pre test -
just takes time...
-
-
Ya that $29 bucks could save you sometime, if they put it on then it craps out during a test run they would deal with it on there end before it even got to you .
