so what are the alternatives you have been thinking about???

i think i'm stuck with the w90... the price is too good, even with the problems.

question about newegg, they don't do customimzation? that x1 would be a sweet deal if you could add a qx9300 into it...

If any of the W90 issues resurface in these new units, I have instructed Ken to get me the M98NU. I already have purchased the upgrade components I would like (i.e. QX9300, SSD, BR-Burner).... I will just need to trade-off my 12GB DDR2, for 8GB of DDR3.

Anyhow, there are WAYS, to do whatever you like with that X1! :)

yeah, i was considering buying the x1.. and install the qx9300.. but then i remembered, oh yeah, i have no clue how to do that. haha. let me rephrase this question: is there a way to install the qx9300 that will keep the warranty intact?

WOW! Thats such a steal from newegg. Jeeze with the way the dollars gone just now and the price for that unit its only 1635 canadian, holy balls thats a great deal 0.o

Now if only the US dollar will keep dropping and allow the Canadian dollar to reign supreme again like it did last year I'd be set! To be honest if the dollar does do that and i can get that machine for less then 1500 CAD I will buy another one.

In terms of value, I will probably stick with the W90 if all looks good in the new units, but I am a bit miffed at the 'lack-of' bios & driver support for the QX9300..... and I DO find the M98NU a very attrative alternative. From what I see in the new thermal solutions in the M98, I am thinking the Clevo/nVidia heat issues have been resolved..... dunno just yet. :)

hey aris, you never answered my question... what are you having ken do to your lappy?

lol, i wish i was ballin' like you striker and could afford the m980nu..
i know, it's a huge steal. i've seen newegg post the w90 up for 1800, but NEVER that cheap... i'm suprised somebody hasn't bought this thing already. for that price you could buy the qx9300, and another 320gb hdd and be around the 2.4k of the a1...

this is what happened for me. i actually paid 1750 pounds due to the curency .imagine if it was 1750 dollars for you :)

kimdoocheol except from the bios i told him to test it for three days for any issues (hopefully no one) :) this is mainly because it is going to come in europe and i wont be able to send it back there. i have to deal with asus then on and i hate this

Striker to be honest i am dissapointed with atis support for mobile gpus not the asus. However windows 7 is still in prerelease and new driver for them will come out (the begining has been done with the beta driver from ati website). windows 7 will be the os of all of us in a few months when final build will come out. i am sure for this. nvidia is not much better though. actually when i had my previous laptop with 8600gs i used to have an issue relating to ram and an error message coming often on screen relating to the ram. it was a driver problem. i had this issue for months until a working driver came out. what finally happened to the laptop anyway is it died due to burned gpu. i never overclocked it of course because i didnt know how to do it.

Don't be disaapointed in ATI. In the mobile community ATI does not provide the drivers due to agreements with their partner OEM/ODM's. If the partners would agree to ATI's driver support, we would see this. As it stands now, we are at the mercy of ASUS for this, or left to rely on modded drivers from the enthusiast community. :)

IMO, the M98NU will be the better buy over AW's new M17x..... larger 18.4 screen, larger chassis (cooling), better keyboard layout, and it has LED lights too! :D

And fuzzy trim around the keyboard and mouse, and throw some spinners on it too... so the wheels keep spinning when we press pause in a game.

i don't get the point of LEDs... what do they do other than heat the lappy up? i don't see a point in it... but it sounds like you have fully converted to the m980nu club..

haha, so true!! i forgot about spinners. we should make a show 0ri0n, pimp my laptop... you can be the brain, i'll be the muscle, striker can fund the project, and quad can be the cheerleader.

Ok heres the update. It tested 9.5, 9.4 and Asus driver with Vantage.
If you use my guide crossfire will work in Vantage. I got double the marks then with 9.5 drivers. I am still working on my own version of 9.5. The graphics score for Vista x64 9.4 was 9224, with Windows 7 is 3861. Half, but 3595 with Asus stock driver in Windows7. With stock 9.5 and Crossfire enabled i get 2148. I dont think Vantage works well with Windows 7.

Can someone with a W90 try something for me? I've been keeping track of my Grey Lines Of Death occurrences and I can get it to happen almost reliably by using www.equifax.com with IE. I login and navigate around and get the lines everytime I've tried so far.

It could be just this machine, so it would be nice to see what happens if someone else tries this. Even if you don't have a login, perhaps just navigating the site will yield the problem.

    Thanks in advance

    It was on page 742.
    1. You must have Master\Master setup!
    2. Install Windows 7
    3. Install Ati mobility 9.5 driver from setup.exe and do not use the have disk way! Drivers
    4. Reboot!
    5. After you reboot go into CCC and you will see Crossfire is an options now. Make sure its enabled. Even though it says it enable GPUID says it not, i'll get to that later.
    6. Delete the C:\ati folder.
    7. In the tools you got for flashing your gpus there was a 9.4 ati driver. Run the setup so that it extracts to c:\ati. Cancel it after it extracts the files (Dont install !!!!).
    8. Mod the drivers in the ati folder with E-Wrecks mod.
    9. Now go into device manager and use the have disk method. Point it to the ati folder that you modded.

A frind pf mine just got his new Dell 17" at 1920x1200 SLI 9800M with some very fancy lights on the back of the screen, i gave him a Crysis Warhead and he run it on highest BUt all the details on minimum otherwise it takes over one second when he shoot or press any comand!!! For me that doesn't work, i told him to get the asus w90 but he refused to take advise from me. You know ( pride) I hope i dont get disapointed with the W90 because I want to be able to play on highest details on my 42" 1080p monitor.

Behind on their reviews and now thats its canceled they have to get it out before the cancellation goes fully public? Lol. Actually didn't another site say they had the laptop for a while now and only got around to it now. Im guessing they would have waited until the issues were fixed before they put the review up but if its discontinued then theres no point in waiting. Just speculation but it is good news to see that anandtech hasn't said anything about it being discontinued.

Anyway back to work and playing fear 2 :D

I just dont see any point what so ever releasing a review of a now supposedly discontinued machine , how will this benefit Asus in any way shape or form ? if people read the review then get all excited about it only to find out they already dumped the line ? eh oh well strange stuff though.

Well, GenTech said they called Asus and the whole thing about W90 discontinued is a rumor. Xoticpc also didn't receive any official announcement from Asus so they continue taking pre orders and etc... I guess this rumor is dead now for me. Asus will continue to make high end machines, and that's what they do best.

Ah good, even with all the rmas this machine still seems to sell and it would make sense for them to just clear up the issues and continue on with production :)

And quad i know what you mean if it was discontinued, i was just thinking that since Asus sends most review machines free to companies that its there duty to make sure they go through with the review, and maybe they had just been lazy :p But now that we have had Ken call about it i think we should be in the clear, and thats a good thing, looking forward to more bios updates :D

i knew from Ken that there was no such information for discontinuing the w90. his information is that asus is trying to ship overseas now.

the whole story seems to be for previous w90 models. and in europe an other model is in preorder called u-something with still dual cores

as for the anandtech review which i spend much time reading, it is referred to drivers not the issues (these may be related to drivers or not). the drivers support is an issue for any notebook with ati not specifically w90 and actions must be taken from asus for support (as ati has no responsibility for notebook drivers as Striker told me). the tests though were with the original driver or a beta one? i didnt understand. the performance could be even better if tested with the modified 9.4 drivers. dont you think?

specialists your opinion please on this...

The machine ships with 8.12 drivers and those drivers were older then dirt lacking the crossfire profiles for many newer games so the performance difference in "some" games can be 50% higher or more going to 9.4s .

Regarding the W90's 4870 configuration, here are some things I have found confusing, and I still question:

    1. ASUS's design intention was to configured two 4870 cards, acting as one 4870 X2 (one card, 2 GPU's)..... hence, no true crossfire mode, but rather a primary adapter, and a ' LINKED' secondary adapter, correct?

    2. If this be the case, then the graphics driver they provide, 8.551.2.0, should be for the hardware I.D. (PCI/DEV) of one 1024GB 4870 X2..... and NOT for two individual 512MB 4870 cards, correct?

    3. If this is correct, then by flashing the secondary card as 'Master', are we not changing the design intention, to a dual 4870 crossfire configuration, vice the intended single X2 configuration?

    4. I realize in doing this, THUSFAR, this has been the only way to get modded driver updates to work..... but I am wondering if we can't mod drivers (INF's) for X2, as ASUS intended. Afterall ASUS managed this in their 8.551.2.0..... and wasn't the X2 intention, a performance oriented decision? Can't the drivers be modded to support X2, thereby alieviating the need to flash the secondary adapter to 'Master'? Is the problem with the hardware I.D.'s, and how did ASUS manage to work-around this?

Thanks in advance for whomever can clear this up for me! Where the HECK has E-Wrecked disappeared to?

    :)

    good questions.

when i first read the viscious guide i was confused too. why both gpus were not as master from default and if we do them both as master this doesnt change something?

i am thinking that this may have to do with the bios option to disable one gpu so it disables the slave one?

Well, clearly we know ASUS design intention was mobility ATI 1024GB HD4870 X2, and NOT two just two separate crossfired 512MB 4870 cards. Otherwise, why go to the trouble of developing an X2 driver. The 'Device Manager' clearly shows:

    ATI HD4870 X2
    ATI HD4870 X2

Twice! Yet we know the W90 does not come with two X2 cards. The Device Manager merely reports what the DRIVER is telling it, and clearly ASUS intended the two cards to act as a single X2 card. SO, my question is can we develop a driver update mod, that remains within ASUS's intended X2 design?

QX9300 and graphics driver support..... two MAJOR ASUS issues nagging my decision on the W90Vp.

ASUS, PLEASE! GIVE US AN 9.5 ATI HD4870 X2 UPDATE, AND BIOS/TurboGear SUPPORT FOR THE QX9300!

    :)
