no issue with the system compared with the w90. i have seen the w90 rma alot that's why. i had the whitebook and the problem that i had was the heat was very hot because it used a single fan for two gpu's.

i know the w90 has better cooling then the m17 but i would prefer the m17 because i would hate to send my notebook in.

as for the card fitting, i'm not sure guess that would have to be tested.

Unless your math is different than mine I would say the W90 is still the best bang for the buck by far.

The M17 with only a 17" screen, 2.0 Quad, Dual 4850s, only 4GB RAM (albeit DDR3 but who cares since running on AC is a must) not 6GB, 1yr not 2yr warranty without accidental damage protection, no bag, no mouse is still $275 more than an X2. If you tried to replace an X1 with its 2.8 Duo it would be $475 more.

You want to just add in that extra year its $200 more a backpack $90 more.

So to keep things as close as possible between an M17 and w90Vp-X2 you would spend about $475 more w/o backpack and $565 with one but still no mouse and thats only to try and match the X2. You would still end up having to deal with 2GB RAM less (and one RAM slot less) a smaller screen (I mean this is a desktop replacement after all) and without accidental protection for your now approaching $3k laptop.

EDIT*** O' Did I forget to mention the TAXES that we also have to pay upfront through AW or DELL as opposed to NewEgg (except CA.) or other ASUS resellers. Not to mention they charge way to much for shipping.

Also there is no guarentee that your M17 with ATI cards will be more error free than a W90 with ATI cards.

what i mean is that if you want to max it out. ok
    17"
    1920*1200
    4850 Crossfired
    2gb of ram
    160gb hdd
    light up keyboard
    =
    1924.00
    4gb from newegg= about 80
    qx9300 ES= 450 ebay
hdd= doesn't count since people have different sizes and speeds that they want.

    the asus is 2,250
    then qx9300= 450
the ram is fine and hdd again i won't count.

also for taxes and everything. i didn't add that and put that in play(i didn't think of it.)

plus you have a bios overclock :) with flash to the ocz bios.

but if you don't want to tamper with your system then get the w90.(i'm not saying it's a bad manchine for the price. i'm just pointing out the m17 isn't bad either.)

    Hey guys,

Just got my W90Vp-X2 from Newegg. I was a little worried about it being an open box item considering the fact that people have been returning the ones with issues. Luckily, it came with all accessories and looks like it wasn't really used by whoever originally purchased it. I ran PCMark06 and got ~11200 3DMarks, so it looks like both cards are working. I haven't run into any major problems yet and hope it continues that way. :D

so how can 4870's be out performed by 4850s. that is just sad. the new M17x is also going to get the 4870 crossX. dont know if it's going to be ddr3 or ddr5, but man, asus is just out of the competition. do you guys think asus will update the ATI drivers for the W90 for windows 7? or will they just not support Windows 7? i just bought this laptop, and already, i should have bought something else.

lol, it makes the m1730 seen portable. Not many other computers out there can accomplish this feat. :D

Performance wise, they're actually pretty close. I got ~11000 3DMarks stock on the XPS as opposed to ~11200 on the Asus. Not bad for a computer that was originally released back in Nov. '07. ;)

Hopefully I can widen that margin once I have the nerves to flash the cards and OC.

Overall, the W90Vp will be a fine replacement for the m1730, though I will be sad to see it go... :(

It really starts to get fun once I start comparing it to my X301. ;)

At ~10 lbs. heavier, I could carry around FOUR Thinkpads for the same weight as the Asus.

yea this laptop is replacing my M1730 too. the M1730 was top dog for like 2 years, ever since the 8800gtx sli was introduced. now it's every other month your top of the line laptop becomes obsolete.

That sucks man. But that Sager is a great substitute. BTW, have you tried installing Vista from scratch (i.e, just the OS, then install the drivers manually)?

Also, have you tried running the system with the 3rd memory stick removed? Something tells me that the X38 chipset doesn't like a triple slot memory config. But I could be wrong and Asus worked around this...let us know.

Another thing could be the Wi Fi seeing that it happens when you're on the interwebs (yes, I said interwebs because it sounds better than internet :p)

is anyone having problems playing Prototype? It lags like a B word when I max out the graphics. It still lags when the graphics are set to the minimum. This game's graphics aren't even intense. I ran 3dmarks 06 and I get about 12k. so both GPUs are working.

Using the new 9.4 drivers? That sounds like a driver issue.

I have been meaning to play this game on the W90 but got bored of it on my desktop so have not been motivated to install it.

One other funny thing I noticed but forgot to mention is that the powerbricks of the W90 and m1730 are IDENTICAL. Both are made by the exact same manufacturer, both are the same model, and both are HUGE.

The laptop ac plugs are a little different though, the XPS's is a bit larger in diameter.

Hey guys, just thought I'd type up a quick W90 report. I got the X2 from newegg and I've had it for about a week. I flashed the slave card to master and installed the 9.4 drivers. Everything has been pretty solid.

At one point, however, when browsing this site, my screen would flash white then go completely black. I've heard it was an issue with 2D graphics with these cards. It happened a couple more times, then I decided to disable Vista's Aero Glass theme. I did this about five days ago and haven't had a problem since. Also, I ran the 2D burn-in test and passed with no errors.

On another note, I could only get the processor speeds up to about 2.6GHz stable. I tried 2.7 and got a BSOD shortly into my test. I am very happy with the overclocking capabilities of the Q9000. I also increased the clock speeds of the 4870s to 600/900 and haven't had the slightest artifact or error.

After overclocking is in place, I get 14.5k 3dMark06 and 10.5k 3dMark Vantage scores. These seem to be normal for most that I've heard. This must indicate that both cards are running fine with no problems.

The only problems I have had are with source engine games (HL2, TF2, Portal, etc.). In these games, I have to disable crossfire or there will be graphical glitches and/or the game won't start, otherwise, with Catalyst A.I. off, it's fine.

I've been playing Fallout 3 on High settings with very good framerates and I'm very satisfied with this laptop.

Nice find sirsloth. I disabled Aero and was able to pass the 2D test. So this should be fixable with either bios/driver update.

This is how I disabled it. Right click your desktop, click Personalize, click Windows Color and Appearance, click Open classic appearance properties for more color options. I selected Windows Standard under Color scheme.

I ran the test again and no fail.

I decided to enable Aero, rebooted, and ran the test. I expected it to fail, but it didn't. The 2D test passed with no errors. So I'm not sure what the problem is here. When I first installed BurnInTest, the 2D test would always fail around 1 to 2 minutes. Yesterday I changed my windows theme to Classic and the test lasted 4 minutes before crashing the laptop. Today the 2D test is passing even with Aero turned back on.

I farted around with Aero and no dice.... pwned by 2D.
I'm crashing far less since my RMA. I've got a new problem though, there are two tiny pieces of something under my screen glass. I flicked it and the little piece of whatever moved down a little bit but now it's stuck. The 2nd piece fell to the bottom but i'm guessing it could easily come back especially if I were to travel and bring the lappy with me. The remaining piece is irritating me like a dead black pixel would. I wonder if I could get the LCD apart. I've rapped the screen as hard as i'm willing. The little piece isn't magnetic either I tried to move it with a magnet. :(

I really don't want to send this in again.

Oh by the way everytime I reboot, I have to set my power properties back to "High Performance". It always reverts back to the Asus plan and modifying that plan to match my high performance settings doesn't work either as the Asus plan seems to be reset on reboot. Anybody else figured this out yet? I'll keep looking at it.

I just ran the same settings.

    DX9
    8x AA
    Motion Blur Off
and got about 5fps lower, so I think they must have turned down some of the other settings you cant see on screen, I had cpu & gpu overclock going also.

Na, but I was running the English version of the test lol, but I can read Japanese katakana & hiragana, just not kanji (without labels)

What happened to resident evil??? Its nothing more than a run around and shoot game now, its a far cry from the great game that came out on playstation many years ago. Mystery, Puzzle Solving, Eeree, I miss the old RE, they should change the game name to a new series as this doesnt look like RE to me anymore.

Your score being higher means the japanese version runs better OR, the more sensable is that this game is dual core only and used the faster clocks of your cpu vs my quad. Ironic as the start splash screens says "runs great on core i7" or just because its a varible bench.

I ran it 3 times now and what it rendered was pretty different each time, the guy even took a different path one time.

So looks like for comparison sake we can only use the fixed bench, not the variable so I included them both.

"runs great on core i7" is just a commercial...

I doubt the 4 sections of the test program use various running parameters, resulting in different performance on the same machine. Maybe Capcom intends to optimize the game according to the feedback.

I installed win7 rtm,but I found video cards driver cannnot be installed correctly.
First,win7 could not recoginize the second video card correctly . In vista, if both cards are master, system will say they are both "run normally",but in win7, the second card is "cannot run(code10)" even if it has been flashed by master bios. And win7 is always trying to install the cards with defalut driver "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 (Microsoft Corporation WDDM 1.1)".
If you install catalyst 9.6 first, then install 9.4 with Vicious' method, you will find that thought crossfire is enabled, the video cards can't decode HD(720p or higher) video(maybe a bug of 9.6) and the second card is always running at 550/800(a bug of 9.4 I'm sure).
Now I want to try install 9.5 first, but I cannot find the driver.the file in this link http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=4921454&highlight=catalyst#post4921454 has been removed and it cannot be found at ati offical site as well. Can anyone share the mobility catalyst 9.5 driver?

i hope asus is forced to update the VGA graphics when windows 7 is officially released. If they don't support Windows 7, man I'll just have to say that atlease Half of the people in this forum will probably be extremely pissed and would considered selling it. I would sell mine. Windows 7 is just so much faster then gay vista.

Exactly my thoughts as well. All things as equal as possible, you're still looking at a $400 difference for a lesser machine with the M17. The taxes is are a good point - my configuration came out to $2548 + 178/taxes. Not to mention you have to wait two weeks for it to ship, and there's no accidental damage protection.
