no no no. what i know the m17 is more but i don't configure notebooks like that. i look for the cheapest price for everything and see what i can get online

1950 is for a 1920*1200 lcd, 4850 crossfire, and light up keyboard.

the hdd doesn't count cause you can get them cheaper on new egg. the ram is 2gb. and it's 200 dollars to upgrade them when you can get them for 60 on newegg.

then it comes with a p8400. crap right. but you get a qx9300 and use the ocz bios and overclock it useing the multipliers. and them use setfsb to top it off.

in the end it's cheaper then the w90 but as i said if you just want to buy a notebook and be happy with it. then go for the w90.

    w90 what 2,350 plus 550 for qx9300=2850.
    m17 1950 + 60 ram plus 550 qx9300 = 2,560.

and i didn't count the hdd because some don't care about the size and others prefer ssds anyway.

do you get my point now????

It was posted on the Asus forum that disabling 'Ati/AMD External Event Utility' service solves the 2D issue. I haven't tested this since my 2D issue is now gone.

I have the same issue with the high performance power properties, except I can set the Asus plan to match high performance settings

Ditto. 5.9 is the hard disk. Graphics are 6.3 and cpu and memory are both 7.2.

I disabled this service and I've been running for about 24 hours with Aero enabled with absolutely no 2D errors. I will report back in about a week with any further information. If this is truly a current fix for this issue, I'll be the happiest W90 owner because this was the only problem I've been experiencing with mine. Thanks for the info!

EDIT: Within SECONDS of posting this reply, I experienced vertical black/white bars followed by a black screen with no keyboard response. Does anyone else know of a fix? Even if just temporary, or do I have to RMA my unit to fix the 2D problem?

I'm running Win7RC Build 7100 64-bit. I have the moddded 9.4's installed via Vicious's guide and the 9.6 CCC on top. Runs perfectly. Device manager shows two 4870X2M.

Well, after OC'ing, I managed to get it up to 15.3k 3DMarks. I seriously doubt the XPS could come anywhere close without a Core 2 Extreme processor.

I think that unfortunately you have a bad vga card. Mine did that twice in the first 4 days that I owned it. I RMA'd it and have never had it happen again after several weeks. I'm running Aero and haven't disabled the service. If you are in Canada, don't hesitate to RMA, it took me only 5 days from sending it in to getting in back. Although, many others in the US have had much longer delays.

Hey, people with RMAs. How long until you guys got your laptops back? I sent mine in and they received it on the 15th of July. only had my laptop for about 4 days. 1-2 business days for repair my butt. I knew they would pull something like this. My laptop kept freezing on the Asus logo screen when it boots up. Anyone else have this problem? Asus keeps saying that my laptop is under repairs, and when i ask how long, they always say that they are unsure and it's under diagnostics. it doesn't take 2 days to dyno. "call back tomorrow and check your status of your RMA" is what they too. If you guys had parts that needed to be replaced, did asus call and notify you? If they don't call me by Monday, I might have to get my lawyer involved. that will speed things up for sure.

My first RMA was fast but the second was much longer due to them not having any in stock at the time I sent it.

I was dissapointed waiting but satisfied in the end as this unit has been awesome.

Hi everyone, I've been perusing this thread for a few weeks now while saving up money and I haven't been able to find the answer to this question anywhere:

    1. Since the AW 4850 xfire on the m17 is out, will the AW driver work on the asus cards? That would be great, and fix all of our problems. I went to the driver download section of AW support but they only have the 3000 series driver so far; just curious if anyone else thinks this could be a possible solution? Also, can the 4850's be purchased and inserted into the asus model and then use the AW drivers? I hate the body style and the 'gamer' affiliation that comes with AW computers, I'd just feel like a total dork owning one (and my family would laugh at me :p so any way I could get the cards to work in the Asus would be awesome (also love the fact that the Asus can overclock like mad and has an 18.4'' screen vs 17'' in the AW)

Thanks for keeping this thread alive! I hope they don't stop making the w90, I'm at about $3000 but I want to save at least $3500 before dropping $2349 on the asus (plus more if the 4870's are replaceable by 4850's)

    Thanks all!

I doubt the AW GPUs can be put in the W90. As to the other questions, I have no idea. :)

i wouldn't get the 4850's. I would wait until AW releases the 4870's for the M17x. Those will out perform every VGA cards for laptops. I don't think the 4850's will show a big difference in performance compared to the W90's 4870. I don't see why the drivers for the AW 4870's shouldn't work for the W90 when it gets released. By then, Asus should have updated their drivers for the VGA. I talked to a tech, and he said that they should be releasing a VGA driver when Windows 7 is released. don't hold me on this though, Asus likes to say one thing, then do another thing.

It's possible that the 4850 cards for the M17 would fit in the W90 seeing as both systems use MXM 2.1 (MXM-III connectors). Problems are 1) if the heatsink would make sufficient contact withthe 4850 cards due to a different capacitor and transistor layout and 2) if it would boot up and work on the W90. If it doesn't, you could possibly flash the 4850s with the VBIOS of the Asus 4870 and theoretically get a GDDR3 4870, but with 1gb on the card. Would be nice if someone tried this ;)

I hooked up my w90 to the LCD TV (HDMI)
I was able to get the video to run on the TV....but i could not figure out how to get the audio to come out from the TV.
It was only coming out from the notebook....

all you have to do is get a cable with red/white males on one end and a headphone jack on the other end, just plug the red/white in to the back of the tv in the same input that you plugged in the video and the headphone jack end into your headphone jack on the computer

    that's all :)

I know about the headphone jack output.
What i am asking is, if there is a configuration or a way to get audio out on your HDMI connection to my LCD TV.
I dont want to have an HDMI and a SPDIF audio cable hooked up.

You need to change the output of the sound in the manager from Speakers to HDMI in the sound control panel.

Does anyone know for sure yet if the Sager 9850 will support CPU overclocking? I'm thinking I should just hold out another month and get it instead of the W90 when it comes out in mid August..

    1gb vram 280m sli in the 9850
    VS
    512mb vram 4870's w/ crap drivers in the w90

Only thing that would suck is if I'd be forced to get the QX9300 to oc at all with the 9850, as we all know the w90 can get 2.6 w/ the Q9000 (which is plenty enough speed for any game). I don't know if I want to spend almost 3 grand on a notebook.. (that'll be the final price for the 9850 even with an es qx9300 from shirley)

So again the question is.. 9850 = CPU overclock capabilities? I want to take the Q9000 to at least 2.4 - 2.5 with it

    Thanks all!

Locked bios, No OC for cpu at all right now according to the first owner posting in the forums. Sager/Clevo are known for locked bios.

GPU overclock maybe possible with the right software/drivers. Same goes for software level CPU overclocking. The W90 is not a bios overclock its a software overclock.

But Asus incluces a tool to make it 2.3ghz from 2.0ghz so it was easy for us to just increase that. The Sager may be like the M17X and not overclock very well at all even if you did find a way to do it at the software level.

Im finding the M17X and now the first benches form the 9850 that they are not really superior machines they are almost equal. So just think about what you want to pay for and why you like each machine more/less than the other.

According to the Windows Compatability report on installation of Win7 upgrade the following programs might not work:

    ASUS Smart Logon *
Norton Internet Security ver. 2007 and 2008
    ATI CATALYST Install Manager *
    ATI Catalyst Control Center *

I don't use ASUS Smart Logon and haven't tried it but it appears to be running. Can't stand Norton and am using Panda AVPro Beta anyway (it's free). And as I said before 9.6 CCC over 9.4 Cat's using Vicious's guide work great. I have no issues so far with anything. No "Old Windows" folder.

Be aware that when the Win7 RC expires next year you'll have to either install a retail copy of 7 or revert back to Vista and all the headache that will acompany those options. I for one will stay with 7.

The other thing to think about is ASUS and friends lack of any win7 drivers for this system, specifically video drivers.....Asus and friends have basically said fsck off to all of us who bought this system.

A big thanks to ASUS and Friends

I just installed Windows 7 RTM, and everything else is working fine, except the video card drivers. There's a yellow exclamation mark over second "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870" in Device Manager, so apparently it's not working in dual mode. Anyone know how to fix this?

I'll repost my guide for Windows 7. I have spent hours working on 9.6 and 9.7 beta and no luck modding them. So for now this works.

    1. You must have Master\Master setup!
    2. Install Windows 7
    3. Install Ati mobility 9.6 driver from setup.exe and do not use the have disk way!
    4. Reboot!
    5. After you reboot go into CCC and you will see Crossfire is an options now. Make sure its enabled. Even though it says it enable GPUID says it not, i'll get to that later.
    6. Delete the C:\ati folder.
    7. In the tools you got for flashing your gpus there was a 9.4 ati driver. Run the setup so that it extracts to c:\ati. Cancel it after it extracts the files (Dont install !!!!).
    8. Mod the drivers in the ati folder with E-Wrecks mod.
    9. Now go into device manager and use the have disk method. Point it to the ati folder that you modded.

I really wanted this laptop, but given all its issues and the best bang for the buck I bought the Clevo M980NU.

It's a shame because this laptop could have been very good and now that ASUS has discontinued it who knows what will happen.

Called a reseller and it has been removed from the system. So I called ASUS sales and they said it's completely sold out. "Can I expect to see some more coming from ASUS in the near future", I asked and she said I don't know. I then said "well if sales were so good then there should be more on the way" and she said I don't think so.

    Very strange.

just talked to asus and they now said, they grantee they will call me back with-in 3 days to notify me the real status of my laptop. I bet i won't be getting a call back. So i notify my lawyer and he's going to contact asus tomorrow. this should be fun. he won't get an answer from asus either. it's going to him off, and then, a law sue on the way. an if all goes well, we all might get a recall for our laptops if the law sue becomes court ordered.

Well I am not going to try to change any minds but in my opinion, this model is far from broken or discontinued. I am sure that the bad apples caused many a sour grape.

I am sorry for those who still have not received satisfactory remedies for their issues. It sucks. I have been on that end of the stick before.

Good luck with your law suit Mazda, let us know how you make out :)

I have nothing wrong with my unit. My first one had video issue and ASUS replaced. My second developed a bright pixel and they replaced. Since then, I have upgraded drivers using VisciousUSMC's guide. All is good in the hood. If you search my posts you can see some of my benches which are quite good in my opinion. The 15k 3dmark06 claim is more than obtainable with the turbo gear. I am more than satisfied.

I'm not sure who you pissed off but I can say my experience with ASUS Tech Support and Customer Support was a complete 180 from yours. Phone calls, email, and nothing but great service through all three of my RMA's and 3 replacement units.

The X1 model could hit 15k casually. I was getting scores in the 15.8k range with the 2.8 Duo OC'd via turbo gear. So its more than a viable claim for them to make, just remember "your results may vary"

Normally, when something is sold out the company will tell you more are on the way, but in this particular case it doesn't appear as though there are anymore being produced. The reseller I spoke with said the system is no longer available from ASUS as it has been removed from their system.

It seems to have issues right out of the box, at least the ones from Newegg anyway.which is a shame.

Nice laptop and I would have preferred this laptop, but in the end I don't want to have to RMA it right after receiving it.

I'm looking into getting one of these maybe, but like someone else posted...i'd rather not read through 900+ pages to determine the differences and issues each version has. Which has generally been the best and had the least amount of problems? the w90vp-a1 comes with more and I found someone who is willing to sell me a new one...are either of the X's better(x1, x2)? Are there performance differences, outside the difference in processors?

I talked to my lawyer and he said that he found time today and contacted Asus. Apparently Asus has had many law suits against the w90. This is, im sure, the reasons it is discontinued. as to my laptop, he talked with someone from higher up, and he said my laptop is under investigation from end-user changing laptop parts. They will notify my lawyer if my warranty is voided or not. This is such a joke. All i've done is add an extra hard drive. Under investigation, please. Who ever is dynoing my laptop is retarded. I know asus doesn't give refunds, but im sure they are gona have to make an exception. ill keep you guys posted.

I'm not saying the w90s are bad. it is a great laptop. Asus should just support everything the w90 has to offer. and fix all the error.

From what I understand, adding a HDD voids the warranty.

"The warranty only covers failures or malfunctions occurred during the warranty period and in normal use conditions, as well as for any material or workmanship defect. The warranty will not apply if:

    (a) the product has been tampered, repaired and/or modified by non-authorized personnel;"

I had high expectations for this laptop and almost bought one from Newegg. Vicious Vic has done wonders with the W90, but I'd steer clear personally.
