I'm coming close to getting a QX9300. Anyone who has done it, and had it in for a while...is it pretty stable? Smooth? Any issues?

    hi,
After a long list of problems with my xps m1730, i'm looking for a new gamerslaptop.
I live in Belgium(sorry for my english) and wanted to know if it's worth to spend my money to buy a asus w90?
Does it realy reach the 15K and higher on 3dmark06, i got with the xps1730 highest score 14.200 @ 3.4ghz with sli 9800gt,4gb ram....
Also there are a few models in this w90serie, which one is the best?
Thx a lot for the advice.
    grtz

Yes, it hits around 15000 in 3dmark06 if you OC the CPU. I hit 15115 with my X2 OC'ed to 2.72ghz.

I don't think, however, spending $2200+ is worth it to have what would amount to around 10-20% performance improvement over your XPS.

As for models, I'd go with the X2 model since it has quad core and should be newer than the A1s. Even if the stock speed is only 2.0ghz, you should be able to hit 2.7ghz just fine. You can also upgrade to blu-ray and add another HD need be.

Yep, i now have his notebook and it hits 17k when overclocked (cpu oc only) :)

As for the guy asking how the qx9300 is, i love it. Really opens up the gpus potentials in games. Just a mere bump from 2.5 to 3.0ghz nets quite a few frames.

Funny thing is, for the first time i got the vertical line gpu crash RIGHT after i read your post haha. Anyways yeah this notebook is rock solid otherwise then that first crash i just got. Been using this notebook for the past 4 months. Not worried about that one crash, i know asus always takes care of their customers, well at least the Canadian ones :p

I'd say go for it then. I came from an XPS with 2x 8800m gtx (same as 9800m gt) and while the real-life gaming performance between the two is not momentus (albeit noticable), the build, package and support is worlds better than Dell. The warranty was the real draw for me -- you're basically worry free for two years and have 1 year accidental and a 30 no dead pixel policy. I think you pay something like $300 extra for that from Dell and still have to deal with their shameful offshored customer (non)service.

I heard that catalyst 9.8 would give great improvementS to the games supporting corssfireX. Also we need new driver for win7. We should talk with ASUS to upgrade to 9.8 as win7 driver.

Stuck between getting this, an HP HDX 18" or a Macbook Pro (top-end). D:

The amount of problems and defective laptops apparently being sold is a bit scary..And since I'm going to be buying in Hong Kong, hrm. Owner opinions on the w90? I was told once that a MBP would be far more durable and longer-lasting than a w90..x.x Love the look and feel of it though, and it has twice as much power as a MBP at the same cost..Thanks.

You'd be taking a gamble especially with future driver support.

I have an ASUS laptop and the build quality is very good and I love the two year warranty. Now that this laptop has been discontinued I decided not to buy it, but I came close to getting one.

It seems to be hit and miss with this laptop, but I didn't want to buy it only to have to RMA it after receiving it. There does seem to be a few people parting with this laptop on this site and on eBay as well.

I'd love to help with getting 9.8 or 9.7 to work for us, but I don't know the first thing about doing all that stuff. I'm still hesitant to drop a QX9300 in mine because I don't want to f it up...though the guides seem idiot proof. But then there's voiding my warranty that concerns me even more....wonder if I had an issue if I could just put the Q9000 back in and they wouldn't be any wiser for it.

Edit: I take it 9.8 isn't working properly in crossfire on vista either?

I contact with ASUS for new VGA driver that works in win7 by this link: http://vip.asus.com/eservice/techserv.aspx?ptype=3&pmodel=W90VP&SLanguage=en-us

Perhaps you can find the yellow ASUS warranty tip on ebay.
Offical catalyst driver from AMD never works.

So I decided to experiment with the 9.7 driver this evening and am seeing interesting behavior
Here are the steps I ran
    1. Disable UAC, reboot
    2. Download and extract the 9.7, cancel at install
    3. Run mobility modder
    4. install drivers

At this point the drivers were updated, however the 2nd card was disabled.

    5. Perform the Limit Breaker steps to flash the bios on the slave to master
    6. reinstall mod'd 9.7 for kicks

Here's where it gets wierd. GPU-Z and AMD Tool both hang the system when run. 3dmark's were increased a tad, but not much. Everything is running stock speeds.

It seems like I'm partially there but not quite. I suspect the 2nd card is still not in use. Will I have to instead install the 9.4 from the Limit Breaker guide instead in order to get crossfire to work and GPU-Z to not hang the system?

    Thanks!

No doubt. I think we can write off Asus coming out with any official updates at this point. Pretty pathetic when you think about it: a top-end gaming laptop that had only one graphics driver (the original one outdated 5 months when the laptop was released) throughout its entire lifetime.

Moo - That's a great CPU upgrade guide you put together for the M17x. do you know if one exists for w90 or if the process is similar? My Q9200 gets here tomorrow and I've never upgraded a laptop CPU...

Upgrading CPU is very easy. Just remove the heat sink of CPU, you should find a screw to fix the processor near the pedestal of the processor. Tweak it, then you can take off the original CPU comfortably. Then embed the new processor, tweak the screw again, apply thermal paste (arctic sliver5,etc.)and clean the original paste on the heat sink(very improtant) ,put the heat sink back. Finished. But in order to make the new processor work praparly, maybe you need reinstall the operating system.

PS: please let us know how far Q9200 can be overclocked by setfsb. Since W90VP can not change CPU multiplexer, QX9300 is not quite worthy, so I am also consider buying Q9200.

Try the new 9.8s, these dont have a bug with GPU-z etc which the old ones did, so if you're already master/master configged, a mobility modded set of the 9.8s might run nicer for you :)

Thanks for the pointer to 9.8, will give them a try. I found that the 9.7's never enabled the second card despite not seeing GPU-Z to prove it. 3dmark06 proved it with a score of 9600'ish. After that, I went ahead and installed the 9.4 from limit breaker and GPU-Z started working, 2nd card working and 3dmark06 went over 11k, still at stock speeds.

So the real kicker is will MM be able to fix 9.8 so both cards are in use. Based on the 9.7 experience, I doubt it will happen or it would already be all over this thread. One can only hope.

Will do - thanks for the instruction. Hopefully, I won't have to reinstall the OS. I was looking at the QX9300, but as you point out, no reason to pay the premium if you can't change the multiplier.

By the way, you "turn" a screw. You don't normally "tweak" a screw which means to perform a slight modification or to pinch something (normally with your fingers) and turn it :)

Why can't 9.7/9.8 be modded like 9.4 to work? I don't really know much about that stuff. Is there a file missing that needs to be modded?

I forget who but someone posted about updating the realtek audio drivers on their w90. I downloaded the newest drivers, do I need to uninstall the old ones or anything or just run the new driver exe file? I tried updating with some other audio driver in the past but all it did to me was give me no sound and then I had to dig up the original system cds and reinstall the original driver so I'm hesitant to go and waste half an hour right now to try to figure it out. Thanks. Any tips are appreciated.

Tried to install my q9200... no dice. I've checked the pins, re-installed the cpu etc. What happens when I boot with it in is I get no Bios splash screen, but it reads "bios checksum error, checks for a CD and USB, and loops checking for a CD and USB. When I enter the w90vp drivers disk, it says "erasing..." then programming. I then get a message "reboot to restore your system..." After rebooting it goes into the same loop. Any ideas?

I'm about to go back to my q9000.

Still getting the bios checksum error screen. I think I've reached the conclusion that q9200 is not compatible with w90vp, at least not the new E0 stepping. Ashame cause I know a couple people just bought these (including myself) with the promise they'd work.

    • I've tried to switch the two CPUID settings in bios, then reinstalled the chip.
    • Re-flashed to most recent bios (601).

    Any other ideas?

I must be doing something wrong. Just ran the exe and now have no sound. It also uninstalled the app thing that let you adjust all the individual speakers as well. I'll try installing that next and see if I get sound back otherwise back to the original drivers :(.

Okay, my bad. Thanks for the help fishhawk, I forgot a crucial step which was to click setup again after it restarts. I was assuming that it was just continuing the installation and it did not work since vista said detecting high def audio device, etc. After clicking setup again it installed and everything works great. Looking forward to better sound, haven't tried it yet since I'm at work. Thanks guys.

Sent back the q9200 as incompatible today. Wasn't a total wash as I'm now able to OC my q9000 beyond 2.8ghz stable after re-installing it :) Must have been the thermal paste... I noticed when I removed it, there was hardly any at all and it looks like it wasn't covering the entire die.

It's more and more apparent that the low CPU frequency is a bottleneck for the 4870s. By just going up 100mhz I'm now scoring 500pts more in 3dmark06 and get 3-4 avg FPS in FC2 tests. I suspect 3.0ghz is the holy grail where the CPU will not be a bottleneck... Now, do I spend $300-400 to get there?
