For anyone still interested comparing w90 to m17x, notebookcheck just posted their full m17x review:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Alienware-M17x-Gaming-Notebook.18781.0.html

It seems when pitted on equal ground (i.e. with equal processors), both machines should perform about the same. They even note that the 4870 X2 and 280M SLI can be considered "coequal" GPU solutions -- and that it's a shame Asus has given up on drivers since.

Just to let everyone know. The 9.7 driver do not work with Windows 7 RTM. I just finished trying them and no luck, back to the 9.4 mod with 9.7 CCC.

Greetings all, I can finally say I own one of these marvels. On stock setup ran burn-in test fine. Haven't been web surfing much but everything I threw at it was excellent. I did notice after flashing the card and installing the 9.4 modded drivers with same ccc from the guide, while trying the burn-in test the screen goes all random colors/pallette or just black and locks up the system. Trying different things to see why i can't do the 2d test any more. Been playing a lot of Warcraft 3 to see if i could reproduce the errors that ViciousXUSMC has when he did a long time back.

Does Asus have a successor to this notebook? I was actually considering this back when it was priced at $2200, but there is no way now. I am now looking at the m17x, but if Asus has something along the way. Although Alienware is expensive, I have never seen them commit this kind of price gouging.

You should check ebay, the W90Vp-A1 is still on there for 2300 brand new. IMO, its the better model anyway.

Newegg hasn't dropped the price, they have increased it. It's now at 2699.

Nope, the W90 series is an "ensemble" notebook as Asus calls it. The only barebone currently available from Asus is the C90P.

Nah, not even worth that IMHO. I figure Asus/Newegg priced this at $2199 when it first came out. I refuse to pay an increased price on a computer because they shorted the supply. Computer prices are supposed to go down. I'll wait until Asus releases a new model. It only make sense that it is cheaper since they are adding another player to this market. Now I have to compare Alienware, Sager, and Asus.

3ghz is really good, but probably not enough for you to be happy with the purchase of a QX9300 when the Q9000 can do about 2.7ghz for most everybody.

If I had to do an upgrade on the cpu I would have gotten one of those $200 Q9200 I saw on ebay a while back. But honestly I am happy with the Q9000 and would probably save up for a nice SSD size/price to happen.

yeah but did notice the differentce during gaming .... this QX9300 was just a price that can't pass , for the SSDs .... I am still watting for them to change form MLC to SLC more ...I don't want a hard drive that only being able to use iin a yr or so then give up because it can't write any more

has anyone found a notebook cooler that will fit this thing? The NZXT Cryo LX looks decent, but without an on/off switch and very short power cord, it looks like a pass.

The NZXT Cryo works great for me, fits perfectly and looks great. There isn't an on/off switch -- you just turn the fan down to 0 if you don't want it on. I've never used the power cord, just the USB that plugs into my w90.

On the same page as the laptop cooler. Does anyone use a laptop table that works well with the W90?

I did purchase the lapdawg but sent it back as the W90 pretty much crushed it on first use. After taking a look around at other products I didn't see anything that would be adequate for the size and the weight of this machine, especially for the price. I am simply looking for something that I can set it on while on the couch or chair. With football season starting, I have to be able to monitor my fantasy stats!

Maybe I just cut a piece of wood to fit it...

That sounds really good with the fan control.. It is a bit wider than the Zalman NC2000 so that's a plus. I might go for that one afterall!

I use an oversized wooden folding tv tray. It handles the weight no problem, plenty of room for the mouse and beer on the side. They look like these http://tinyurl.com/p9p7ha I can't recall if that is where I got them, but despite what the review say, all 4 tables are rock solid. No mouse pad needed for both optical and laser mice.

So far so good with mine, but i've only had it for 2 weeks.

Someone won the auction for that A1 on ebay, think they bid at the last minute too. There's an X2 up now, brand new, but it's a bidding war on that one it seems. Was at 1450 last I looked.

Had my A1 since release and haven't encountered any problems. Runs constantly throughout the day at work for over 8 hours (much of that time spent rendering 3D too) and a few hours each night at home.

Use it for everything from gaming to internet browsing to image rendering. If it weren't for all of the RMA reports around here, my impression of it would be that it is built like a tank. Very reliable thus far and I've worked it hard.

I'm looking to sell my W90VP-X1 if anyone is interested. I'll be making a post on the Marketplace in a bit, but wanted to get it out here first.

Comes with an extra 320GB HD (Same as the one shipped with it, which means RAID0 or RAID1) and a Blu-Ray drive.

As far as I can tell, after the numerous RMA's I've gotten, this one is pretty solid in terms of avoiding crashes and such.

If anyone's interested, toss me a PM.

Hello W90 owners!! I've been redirected here from the main Asus forum.

I come to you in ... er peace I suppose.. :D

Anyway this is a request to you all. Recently i've been seeing this wallpaper stuck on many W90 pictures:

I was wondering if it came with your laptops, and if it does, could someone upload a high quality un-modified version of it?

Please note that, because I haven't explained it properly in my previous post and a fellow chap got confused, I am looking for the wallpaper that is displayed on the screen in the picture above, WITHOUT the W90. I do not want any W90 pictures, just that shiny wallpaper (the explosive watery blob star thing) shown on the screen of the W90 above. :)

well guys. I just bought the M17x. it won't be here till next month. the w90vp was a good run. after the RMA, it ran perfectly. i doubt that the M17x is going to perform any better because i got 260m sli instead of the ripoff 280ms. I'll let you guys how well it performs on the same games i tested with the w90.

where did you hear this from and can i see a link to it.

they seems to be keeping the same chassis which is alittle disappointing but ok nonetheless. if they keep the same mxm then the m17x can gpu's can be upgraded which is a plus.

Posted it in the wrong spot so I switched it over to our owners thread.

It was from the CEO of Eurocom.

He's the guy who gave me the deal on my laptop.
