I know in the past that a couple of my notebooks had some bleed and after a week or 2 it slowly faded but never went away completely . So what might be Bad now may not be so bad in a week or 2 .
-
-
Well that is atleast comforting to know the "effect" might diminish through time. I only have about 2 hours of time on the PC since I received it about a week ago (yes most would consider this grounds for death) unfortunately career and family have my time atm.
-
look at this 3dmark06 score, from a norwegian site. http://itpro.no/art/13803.html

Doesn't matter who resells them in EU. +18% extra cost compared to US price is quaranteed + some other taxes. EU taxes all imported hardware from countries outside EU. It does that just to protect EU manufactures from massive overrun by the bigger and cheaper companyes who produces with bigger quantityes of equipment/parts outside the EU. Especially from Asia and American continent. But you can't have double standards so all other countries beside EU member countries have to pay taxes also alongide previously mentioned regions. And who loses in that battle - we do- the end consumer
Sucks monkeyballs.... I would love to live in US, you get all the good stuff so cheap
-
Sorry about the short message. It was late, and I wanted to go to bed. The driver posted does the same thing as the official 9.2's on ATI's site. After uninstalling the drivers that came on the CD and cleaning everything up, I installed the posted ones. Like before, they appear to install, but don't actually do anything. The ATI Technologies folder is empty after a restart, and it still shows up as Generic VGA Device in Device Manager. In short, these things don't do anything.
-
Thats true. I really hate european pricing sometimes.
Well, anyway asus ASUS W90VP (18.4/P9600/HD4870/6G/640) is already up for at least two stores here in Finland. From 2779e (that's 3 505$) to 2999e (3 784$)
So.. yes. European pricing can be really extreme. -
can sum1 pls do the 4 everest-memory benchmarks for me and post the results here? (best out of three runs would be great)
-
Looks pretty decent. Rep'd him for the effort.
-
Go ahead. You were pretty accurate when you did it with the 4850s.
-
Well I just got mine in the mail (a day early YAYYY) and so far so good. No crash on boot up and everything is smooth. I am just in the process of installing crap like Office and Norton then will get to installing and testing games and benchmarking.
Backpack is Amazing, even better than I thought. Blue Tooth mouse is really nice, Laptop is top notch. Will report more later. -
Yes, my screen too looks like the pictures posted. I thought that level of bleed was reasonable for a screen this big. The screen is of nice quality and brightness, but I have a feeling the color temperature is too cool. Anyone else notice this?
And in response to the drivers going around, I really appreciate the effort, but I cannot get them working. I feel I've been tampering with the system too much and am going to do a fresh f9 install, wait for the Asus drivers, and install those. But thanks again to those trying to find a fix now, rather than waiting on Asus, which seems fairly inactive. I say this because I have yet to speak to a knowledgeable phone support tech, which is a shame and very frustrating. The only information I'm getting is through this forum, not Asus. -
Congratulations. I agree, the backpack is much more than I expected. It is a rigid front and is branded with the Republic of Gamers logo. Definitely going to be useful as I have yet to find any other backpack this will fit in.
-
john if i didnt know better your in love with the asus.....
-
Warhammer your leakage looks fine and im sure its actually worse in the photo then in reality which is not much anyhoo . There are people out there that may find it unacceptable but i could live with that and like i said it may diminish over time . The screen of your desktop pic looks great as the screen looks nice and bright and full of color im digging it
.

i'm seriously trying to figure out a way of buying one of these and getting it to europe
if i can arrange this my M1730 is history -
Well thanks for the referral. I'll call back later and try to get J.J. I am fully registered and have received a number from the online inquiry.
And btw, any new information? -
are there any benchmarks comparing it to the M1730 wit the 8800's?
I wonder how the 1730 with 9800's will stack up against it -
Hate to be a nuisance, but there is one last thing that is bothering me. Since I've been doing a lot of installs, the computer has been restarting a lot. That startup chime is extremely loud and annoying. Is there a way to shut that off?
-
You can adjust the volume of that in the BIOS.
-
Changed my sig LMAO.
Oh and hit F2 to boot into the BIOS then go to the BOOT screen.
In other laptops you can adjust the volume but on this one the only options are Mute and Enable. -
Thanks. Haha, mute is fine for me, that's exactly what I'm looking for.
The speakers sure come in handy inside vista though, lol. The Allman Bros. sound AMAZING on the w90. I don't understand why early reviews mock the subwoofer, it really makes a phenomenal difference! It's nothing desk shaking, but I don't like that anyway. Turning the sub on and off in the control panel really lets you hear the difference. The sound has so much more definition and range with it on....which I guess is redundant, considering that's what a sub does. But anyway, thought I'd mention that.
Asus did a great job with the media aspects of the computer (screen, speakers). I'm gonna have to order a bluray drive in the near future (still too expensive now) and experience true hd picture and sound on the w90. My bluray copy of the Last Waltz (The Band) is dying to be played in this thing! -
Do I remember someone saying that their video cards were showing up as one card in their Device Manager? Mine shows up as 2 independent cards in mine.
-
With ATI's release of their new 40-nm cards I can't help but wonder how Crossfire 4860s would compare to the imitation GDDR3 4870s in the W90.
-
You're right. Before I only saw one. Then, when I went into the Overdrive part of Catalyst and clicked the lock, it let me switch between the two gpus and check clocks/temps/etc individually for each card. They're still both labeled X2.....so maybe I can convince some of my friends I'm running quad-fire IN A LAPTOP! That would be pretty epic.
-
Hi
I too have been following this thread with great interest (drooling mostly ..lol). I'm on the market for a gamer and have been excited about this beast since it was launched at the CES in January.
I was somewhat miffed when I found out it wasn't being sold in the UK, heck the Asus UK website doesn't even mention it.
I've been tempted to fly to the US ( cheaper than shipping, import duties etc) and pick one up from BestBuy when they sold it.
But .... then I saw this :
http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/node/1421
according to the comments below it's going to be available in the UK at the end of March.
Be still my beating heart
-
Higher performance.
-
I'm not entirely sure about that. The Mobility 4870s use the same architecture as the desktop 4870s, meaning they maintain all 800 stream processors, albeit at lower clock speeds. These 4860 cards only have 640. W90 owners can easily push their 4870s to the full 600mhz core / 900mhz memory. The 4860 cores would only run 50mhz faster. Also keep in mind, even though the memory is running significantly faster, the bus is cut down to 128 bit. I'd say that negates some of the performance of the gddr5.
These new cards are really great though and will put the hurt on nvidia, especially I think in the 15.4" performance market. Besides, though this is purely speculation, I doubt those 4860s will appear in notebooks until well into the second half of the year. 4870s in crossfire will keep the performance crown until gtx 280m cards show up and kill people's wallets. -
The 4870s in the W90 aren't using the 1Gb of GDDR5 that they should be using and are basically just overclocked versions of the 4850s. Since the 4860 is said to perform better than the 4850 it should be close to the 4870s in the W90.
The 4860s are going to be in the ASUS K series which are due up for release with the VX5. -
asus K and VX5 series ???
do you have more information on these setups ???
Thanks
-
"Full" 600 MHz core? Desktop 4870's have 750 core and 900 memory, plus GDDR5 = double memory bandwidth. There was a performance review of an ATI board partner supplied sample of the desktop RV740 and it's within a few FPS of a desktop 4850. Considering how crippled the GDDR3 4870 is (Slower than a desktop 4850 on the core and memory), even with only 640 SP the 4860 should outperform it especially in higher resolutions.
Also, I really need a fairly technologically savvy W90 owner to PM me so I can continue work on modding these Catalyst 9.2 drivers. 64-bit Vista or Windows 7 is needed. -
Can check the main ASUS boards and the Notebook News and Review boards for info on the K and VX5.
-
Not to be an arse, but can you please elaborate on this sentence? I'm pretty sure ASUS is aware of the bugs, and are working with AMD on correcting them. Afterall, Mobility HD4870 is a really new card (W90vp is the first one to have them), and there's no promise from AMD that those cards will work perfectly on the first day. That's always a problem for the early adopters, and not just W90vp owners.
So give it a little time for the driver issues to be solved. -
I'm hoping by end of March
-
Having seen all the screen shots and pics posted here...any chance someone can actually film the kind of problems you've been experiencing and upload the video to some site that we can go to and view them? maybe even direct the Asus tech guys to them too.
Just a thought.
ps if you're camera shy you dont need to be in the shot -
Well by "full", I meant the max overclock. You can't expect the mobile cards to come near the desktop cards in terms of clock speed.
I still maintain the 4870s will remain faster than the 4860s, by naming convention alone.
But hey, I could be wrong. Best to wait and see. Maybe the 4870s will be updated with gddr5 and w90 owners will be eligible for an upgrade. I'm almost certain that would never happen, but you can always hope!
I guess you have to remember technology is always changing and this is just the nature of the industry. I needed a new notebook now, so I bought this, can't regret that because a new card will come out in a few months. -
I bought my 1GB 4870 like 2 months before the new 4890's are launching at the same price. It happens to us all.
Are you interested in driver troubleshooting with me? I still need a volunteer. -
That will actually be a great idea. Maybe you can start a stickie and post all of the problems in there. It will be easier for the technicians at ASUS to understand the problems.
-
What would you have planned, o wise one?
I was planning on waiting until tomorrow to see if Asus would deliver. If not, then I'd be happy to assist. -
You have to hunt around in your C:\Windows folder. I'll send you a PM.
-
I've set up the thread for error / issues reporting.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=358999
Please contribute if you are currently experiencing some technical problems. Thank you. -
Yeah imitations....the Mobility 4870 designs released by ATI were 1Gb of GDDR5 not 512Mb of GDDR3.

HAHA, I'm probably too young to be listening to these bands, but what can i say, I consider myself more "cultured" than a typical person my age. Gotta love the fans of the Allman Bros. though, saw them perform last year in New Jersey, and a guy politely offered to share his pot. I naturally turned him down, but was nonetheless flattered by the offer. Couldn't breath, ears were bleeding, and it was fantastic.
ANYWAY, I'm getting OFF TOPIC.
How's the bluray drive working for you? If it cooperates nicely with the w90, I'll probably get one. -
firebird34,
I sent you a PM with instructions. -
Sent my laptop in for rma Friday, still waiting on news.
-
You really need to stop believing ASUS mainly.
-
Business news is 3rd party, Asus has vested interest and will tell you anything to keep you a customer.
GDDR5 4870's aren't out yet, but these current ones are 'imitation' in the sense that what makes them 4870's and not 4850's is the GDDR5. They're still great cards, just the naming is a bit misleading. -
Hey. I don't know if these figures mean anything?
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/229/1051229/ati-40nm-gpus-arrive -
Just a quick update. I have been using the new laptop non-stop nw since I got it. Played a little COD4 and am in the process of installing Left For Dead and some other games.
While I have not engaged the turbo yet, it has been rock solid. I am mainly focusing on porting everything from my old Asus M70Vm to the new monster
Will update more later. -
So i take it by you calling these imitations that all the mobile cards released to date are also imitations IE the 9800gtx 8800gtx etc etc as they are all crippled versions of there desktop versions ? or could it be that the mobile sector uses the same naming scheme as the desktops but there just more practical versions for mobile use . i think the word imitation is a bit harsh but hey everyone is allowed there own opinion
