Yeah wwoods outlook on this brings nothing but negativity and glum to the w90. Its simply not true that crossfire doesn't work. Ive had offers for this notebook annd im not selling it because in the end it is a great peice of hardware. However like any cutting edge piece of tech it does have its quirks. You either learn to work around them or and get no where. Its up to you.
I've choosen to not get uptight about this notebook and i enjoy and have enjoyed it for many months more then the aw owners for a price less then what the AW owners paid. Im happy.
tl;dr
be happy with your purchase or keep to yourself. No ones stopping you from selling this notebook.

I am/was considering buying one of these used (though I haven't heard from the seller in days and am close to buying something else) and wonder what the fuss is? Even w/o Crossfire isn't this one of the most powerful mobile gaming platforms available? I also understand there is a workaround that involves flashing the GPU so that standard ATI drivers work.
After scanning this huge thread I see a lot of complaints and some workarounds. Can someone briefly summarize if there's really an issue? I assume I can play all the RTS type games I like with higher performance than that of my G50 with the nvidia 9800. On paper this looks like a great system.
Thanks for your input.
Cheers, -

ASUS just loves their customers -
Well, it's sounding more and more like the HD4870's in the M17x have GDDR3.
And to think everyone was making fun of how the W90 didn't have "real" 4870's... -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
well someone has to be brave enough to flash the bios that's the only problem. and we have to get someone to upload the bios from gpu-z.......
-
Its a shame that it was. Granted, I am not overly familiar with the notebook like the owners here and I have heard some controversy over its features, such as problems with utilizing the card's full potential. But despite those issues, it looks like a beast of a notebook and I wonder if Asus will bring it back with Core i7 and/or 5870s.
-
With the headache the W90's been to Asus, I seriously doubt it, lol.
But, we can always hope...
-
Interesting, i as i ordered my "free" windows 7 upgrade(W90VP) from Asus with now problem... Maybe they will ship a win7 drivers CD with the win7 upgrade... ,, one can dream
-
This is directly from Asus windows 7 upgrades FAQ:
Q: What is included in the Windows® 7 Upgrade Program package, and when will I receive it?
A: The Windows® 7 Upgrade Program package from ASUS will include a single Windows® 7 upgrade DVD, an installation manual, as well as a driver DVD (product model specific). ASUS will update the website and commence shipping after Windows® 7 has been officially launched by Microsoft.
so maybe they will actually ship drivers

Has anybody successfully played Aion on their W90?
So far I can't play without horrible artifacts. Tried 9.4 and 9.10 beta so far. -
In germany is the w90vp listed in the windows 7 upgrade programm
-
The W90Vp is on the list in the US too, but the "W90V" is not...
-
Dealers said that within next months there will be models with 5xxx Radeons. Dunno if it will be ASUS' units, but who knows.
BTW, sent my unit to repair (WSOD, flickering).
Should be tested by the end of tomorrow... -
Installed windows 7 today on my w90. I'm having troubles getting it to recognize both graphics cards though, tried the limit breaker guide with the 9.4 drivers and ccc and no luck. Anyone sort it out? Let me know. I'm going to have to dual boot vista perhaps as an alternative which would suck but it's better than no xfire.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
it's a crossfire issue that i had with my whitebook with the 3870 crossfire as well. try 9.4 and see what's up....
-
9.4 didn't work, neither did the original ccc. Whoever has it working, can you please let us know how you made it work?
Basically I can't get drivers to stick on the 2nd card, it just keeps giving me a stupid caution symbol. I'm sure there will be a lot of people in the same boat as windows 7 starts getting installed more. -
Did you flash the 2nd card with the Master BIOS?
-
I have, i lowered the shadow quality a bit, and not artefacts,

Hi there,
I just hung up with an asus rep here in france, she told me to check regularly asus website because they made a windows seven driver for the W90, just needed time for them to update every laptop pages due to windows seven huge amount of driver modification.... -
Hope your right doope!
-
If this is true, then this is the best news ever!
-
I'm running Aion just fine as well. Just curious, what does your fps look like? I'm playing at all max settings with 2x AA.
-
Well, she asked me if i purchased windows seven from asus website, because it was delivered with the driver cd for the GPUs... I said no, she said then to wait for asus website to post the new drivers... that only 10% of drivers were uploaded so far....
-
You have made my day!
Merci beaucoup -
Contrary to some opinions on this board Crossfire does work under Win7. I have posted this several times in the past. I have been running W7 RC Build 7100 for several months utilizing Vicious' Limit Breaker guide. Currently I am running the 9.4 drivers with the 9.9 CCC on top and Crossfire is enabled and verified.
The most important thing aside from a correct BIOS flash is to use the "Have Disk" method when you install the drivers. If you don't do this you will always have a second card with problems (i.e. "stupid caution symbol") . Follow the guide exactly. If you are unsure, then ask. When properly followed the guide works as advertised.
Once you have successfully installed the drivers I will explain how to upgrade the CCC. -
Under vista I did have it working fine. I originally flashed the cards using Ken's iso bootdisc so I don't know if it will make a difference. Should I reflash the cards using the exact method with usb stick, etc as vic's guide, could that make a difference? Basically I installed the original ccc and drivers that came with the w90 under windows 7. Then I followed the guide, did partial installation, overwrote the ati folder, etc. Then did the have disk method. One thing I don't totally understand is there are 2 different inf files to choose from and under each inf there are 2 4870x2m selections. I've tried variations of each to try to make them work but the 2nd card won't hold them. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks, let me know what you think. I just want to get them working under 7 as I don't trust that asus has the drivers but 'just hasn't posted them yet', although I hope I'm wrong. I'll give it a shot again. I appreciate your help. Thanks.
-
Just spent the past 3 hours trying to get the drivers to install under 7. Used driversweeper to wipe out all driver residuals, uninstalled catalyst, tried installing catalyst from original cd onto system but kept freezing, 2nd card won't take driver. What a nightmare, unbelievable. Hopefully Asus actually does have some new drivers otherwise I'll have to dual boot vista for games if I can't sort this out.
-
Yeah right. See above posts.
I am just hoping Asus makes things right soon. -
I have seen the "above posts".
What Crossfire problems are you specifically talking about? The issues some people have been having with W7? -
in the meantime, you can try the catalyst 9.7 drivers for the M17x in the Alienware section to see if it works. I don't have the W90 anymore to test it but maybe it would work seing that the ATi cards in the M17x are also GDDR3...

Trying these right now on W90 running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Ill let you guys know in a sec.
-
No go. I think Alienware is using a true crossfire setup in their machine as opposed to ASUS' 4870x2. I tried manually installing and the standard install method and it doesn't appear to work. Someone else feel free to give it a shot though.
-
the card in the driver has a different SUBSYS ID than the card of W90VP. I think the Driver is for the single ATI 4870 card from Dell.
[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.1]
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850" = ati2mtag_M9x8, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_944A&SUBSYS_02A11028
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 " = ati2mtag_M9x8, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_944A&SUBSYS_02A21028

there's acouple ways to go about it.
you can change the device I'd to yours
you can mobile mod them
you can just added your device I'd.
try it M/M and M/S
last is try to gt dell's bios and change the vram to 512mb and try to flash.
I don't want to be held response for flashing if it doesn't work on your card and the chance of messibg up your cards in the process....
-
I have M/M and change the ID. You can only install the driver manually. CCC and the other apps do not.
I mod the driver. You can install setup completely, but in the CCC overclock mode is missing. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
did both of the cards install?
-
Yes
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
nice. It's a big update
9.7 from dell works for the w90
now. Try to reinstall AI
also what you can try to do is drop that dell inf in a regular 9.7 driver and see what's up.
it seems like the w90 is bac.

Well we need to verify that it works. Run GPU-Z or a benchmark to see if Crossfire is properly working.
-
I never said that it works. The problem is that I have currently installed only the drivers and not the ccc. GPU-Z says to the driver no Crossfire!
-
is that in Vista or Windows 7. If its in Vista I don't really care as I need it to work in Windows 7. My second card in 7 says it "cannot start" in the device manager.
-
Did you install the drivers from just the installer or did you try to manually do it from the device manager ?..
-
is windows 7
The first try:
i must edit the wrong subsys entry in the .inf file, then i was able to install the drivers from the device manager. CCC and the other apps does it not. GPU-Z says No Crossfire!
The second try:
I mod the driver with mobiliy modder and i was able install from the installer but in the CCC the overclock mode is missing. GPU-Z says No Crossfire! -
Try to install an older CCC that you know that works but leave the drivers in place..
-
Hello,
it is a no go. i tried installing manually both of the drivers... you have to install one card at a time.. they both install on each driver, but NO CROSSFIRE , gpu-z says available tho.
Tried the vista version of drivers. on a 9.9 ccc -
Its so stupid these drivers will not work.. It all points back to the X38 chipset though causing this.. People with Desktop X38 boards still have these issues as well to this day...
Does everyone that is trying to install the drivers have a Master/Master setup or are some using Master/Slave?... -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
try master slave. Master master needs ccc and crossfire enabled.
with master slave you don't need ccc for crossfire and you if you do have it installed, just make sure AI is on.
master slave is like a force crossfire unless the game doesn't support it. At least on my wihtebook that's what I found out using win7.
