The people who actually have them up and running just are not the hardcore benching crowd . Im sure as time passes there will be a few who are truly interested in putting it through its paces. The other thing holding this machine back i believe is the lack of new drivers or the ability to install them, which is a real bummer.Hopefully someone can come to grips with figuring it out .

I ordered from Xotic using a government computer with a Navy Federal card, which is a Visa. It should be accepted, but I'd recommend you follow the instructions for setting up a ship-to address to ensure you get your order ASAP.

I have experienced no problems at all in the vista environment. No lockups or crashes. All of the games I've tested run fine. I was kicked out of far cry 2 back to the desktop once, but I don't think that is too concerning...could've been anything, hasn't happened again. So, to answer your question, the w90 seems to be stable now.

I guess I may have missed it, but has there been any user reviews of this system with the Q9000. I will be ordering a laptop next week most likely and need to finally make my final decision between the M17, W90 or 17" MBP or just wait another month. Also, so far it seems the 4870's arent running much better than the 3870's from what I have been able to see on this forum, do people really think they will be significantly faster as drivers mature or are these going to be flop?

Got past that. We learned that as long as the 9800M GTX is overclocked and AA isn't involved, these high tech stuff ain't killing no 9800m gtx. We get it ;)

humm, doesn't Japan and China get these things before we do?

i think i figured out the AA as well, so that's now up for debate. just waiting for someone to run them now.
we aslo learned that without fsb running in over clocked mode...they don't do so hot either.(xfire mode)

These cards really need a FAT cpu behind them to really get the most out of them imho and 2.0ghz or 2.29 will never do them justice(speaking about the baby quad). The sweet spot ill bet is somewhere around 3.4-3.7ghz.

im thinking so...because running a 9800m at gtx280 clocks nets a 5300 to 5400 gpu vantage score. that already puts it ahead of the 4850.(speculation of course) all with out over clocking a cpu or raising the fsb. go ahead and grab one quad. you know you want to take the plunge... :)

Oh how right you are my friend :) I am ready to grab one . I just wish i knew how much the M98s were going to sell for before taking the plunge :( . I am also torn at this point because i would have to get the Egg model based on the stock CPU having more out of the box potential for ME as i wouldnt be able to afford a Qx9300 for sometime , i would want to make sure for the time inbetween i would be very content . So its boiling down to 3 things at the moment 1.M98 pricing and release 2.Get the egg model or go with Xotic 3.Am i really going to be happy without a Qx9300 for say atleast 4 months as i dont want to go broke in the pursuit to see how fast this thing can be even if i really want to . Tough decisions going on internally for me .

yes...this does present a small problem....ok...best to wait it out...if anything, they may start shipping with the qx9300 when the time comes to purchase. now you know that will put it at around the cost of a d901c/whitebook/alienware m17 in the 3000 to 3500 range once everything is said and done.

also, april is just about here so we shall soon see....

Ya if i can tough it out for the next few weeks hopefully some news will surface on pricing etc for the other model and it will just make my decision that much easier. Either way i wont be buying any machine with a Qx93 out of the box and it will be something added down the road and for much less then OEM or retail pricing, so that is not something im really considering . its more of just the M98vsW90 pricewar and who is going to get my money .I have been an Nvidia fan for far to long as most people have and jumping to the whacky world of ATI with there crazy drivers has me abit intimidated as well .Its already fairly lonely in here with not alot of support (not counting you and E-) and that has me abit concerned as well . Its to bad E- could not swing one of these machines as im sure it would have got me excited enough to buy one asap.

just need a dedicated enthusiast is all....
and the driver support is seriously out there, but once someone takes the time to learn the correct modding of the xfire/4800 series. then that will become a thing of the past.... no one seems to want to stay on this project for very long....

For arguments sake say i pull the trigger next week and order one, then what ?

None of us have ATI desktop cards except Jbrightbill and the people that have tried to get it working have had no luck . You are correct that we need an enthusiast and a ATI one at that . Someone with full knowledge front to back of how ATI cards work and what makes them tick so to speak . Problem is those people have yet to show there face in these parts :(.

These are just more reasons why i keep swaying back and forth. Its like im excited then completely not because of the lack of enthusiasm around here aside from the "got my machine i can play every game maxxed out " :) that will be fun for me for about a 2 days then ill be wanting to take it to the next level except i would be hindered by lack of support as i know squat about ATI .

i think Jbrightbill would have had the problem solved if he owned a w90. when you own the laptop and cards in question, it's allot easier to run your test and figure out what works and what doesn't. easier to spot why it doesn't work as well....
    flip side:
ViciousXUSMC is getting one. and he definitely seems to be an enthusiast. also holds a few records under his belt. so you may get your answers soon enough.

The problem with laptops is that they aren't desktops :p
You can't simply upgrade components on a whim to get better performance.

This is the reason I held off for years before I finally caved and bought the W90. It's one of the first machines in a while that actually has a lot of potential right out of the box. Heck it got me excited right away when I saw it listed on Newegg, and that doesn't happen often.

I expect driver development will happen in due course, but you have to remember that the W90 is a new machine with new chipset (for a notebook) and new graphic cards. So a slow start is to be expected.

FYI, I think if you do go for the W90, then get the X1 and upgrade it over time to the components you want (extra HD, Blu-ray, higher end quad core etc...).
At least this way you'll have the faster dual core CPU for the time being.

yes...we went through this with the whitebook. and they are still waiting on drivers for the 3870's. so dont expect anything to change over night with the 4870s... :(
edit: they are testing the 9.3's now, so we shall see though...this is 6 months later.

to mod vista drivers you need to add some info the inf's as well as hex the .msi's and CHANGE the id string for 4870 then the installer works fine. also change the secure=1 to 0 and none=1 under the config folder

ok.. so I am still wondering why no drivers work on this system except stock driver. Here is someone else with 4870s who reports similar problems. I think it's a driver/BIOS issue. Not one or the other, but both. Likely more BIOS than driver tho.

    http://www.overclock.net/ati/471908-issues-hd4870-s-crossfire-catalyst-9-a.html

Has anyone tried 9.1 with this system?

Also, anyone run Win7 with it to see if Windows update downloads the 9.3 drivers automatically? Or, if it downloads any drivers for the GPUs? Just curious if someone has stepped outside the box. :)

that's why im wondering if they we're renamed to 4870 in stead of 4870 x2. and the strings in the bios matched to a set of strings in the inf.. would it work. because they are all mixed up, unless this last batch came out with everything matching.

you are not for real right. all these unstable ati cards will crash that overclocked by to much.

but do you really think these x2 in the inf's make a difference.
