The G72 has been discontinued for some time so finding one new will be difficult if not impossible. You probably just got a lemon... another refurb could be worth a try. It's always hit or miss for 'furbies.

Any HDMI to HDMI cable should do as long as the monitor has an HDMI port.

Thanks for your reply but I should have been more clear, I have an RBBX05 model with a WXGA++ screen and want to upgrade to a WUXGA (1920*1080). I have previously upgraded resolutions on Asus notebooks with no issues but the video cable for the original screen will not reach the connector on the WUXGA screen (they are on opposite sides). I'm looking for the model number of the cable needed for the full HD screen, I have written Asus but I am yet to receive a helpful response. Thanks again!

What do you Guys think, while playing Need for Speed Undercover (most things on max settings but not all) i got Maximum temps about 81 celsius. Is this bad or just ok?

Sounds quite respectable to me. My temps max out around there too. I think my usual temps are around 78C-81C under load. If you want a true test of what temp your GPU hits under load, run the Furmark GPU stress test.

    Hello all,

I have two of the g72gx's. One is the core 2 duo, and the other is the Quad 2 core. recently whenever I play games like bulletstorm and section 8 (the new one). the video freezes up after about 10 min of play. It does not do it for shadowrun and other games. The core 2 duo has no issues at all. I have read about the heating issues;but it did not do this before. I was going to get a cooling pad;but I read also but doing a factory restore and it may be just a driver issue. (any thoughts on this?) I did not want to have to re-installed everything all over. I also read about driver sweep etc. Any help is appreciated. It does not have any issues playing blu ray;just on those games.

The Quad version G72 I gave to my son had this issue. The thermal paste had dried up and needed to be re-applied. It was still under warranty so I had a local authorized service center perform the work.

The slow down's always happened as soon as the GPU hit 100c.

    Cheers,

Thank you for the reply. I have some artic silver5. I may do a re-apply;but will work on a cooling pad and playing with riva fan control to see if it will help.

I googled around and saw that the cryo lx is a good cooler. I also saw that riva tuner and other programs cannot control the fan since it is integrated with the CPU. If someone has a workaround on that can you post. I see there 136 threads here, so I may not have time to look at them all. I set bulletstorm to the lowest levels and turned off v-sync. That has helped a lot for it not freezing up.

Some folks took off the bottom cover and had one of those small fans blow on the GPU, however, if its the paste that's gone bad, you'll need to resolve that to put the problem right.

    Cheers,

hello guys, I am new here, and i am very hopeless now since I ve tried so much to solve the very classic case of this laptop G71GX : the GTX260M auto downclock !!! :( :(
I updated BIOS to newest version (it was said that this could solve the issue but in my case..it still won't work) :( , tried MSI after burner, riva turner, and do some customization on Nvidia control panel 's 3D settings , but ... it won't fix the problem, Whenever I try to play crysis 2, the witcher 2, or some demanding games , after a few minutes the card downclock itseft to a very slow clock rate which end up unable to play ...
pls,pls i read so much and try to find a solution for this problem on internet but still find no luck,

    Somebody... please... help me :( :( :(

no, it just pass about 84 Celsius, this is the riddiculous thermal policy that asus rule on the bios of G72gx and there was a 1201 bios version that suppose to be fix this issues, but to me... it is useless, the auto downclock when the GPU reaches above 84 C still remain... and it make this laptop useless on gaming :( , please show me some way to get rid of this , I am so tired trying...

Temps or power settings would be first on my list to check.

Try using the, "Performance" section add on for the NVIDIA Control Panel. With that you can set profiles, custom clocks and add rules based on your GPU temps and more. You can get it by downloading and installing, NVIDIA System Tools: NVIDIA DRIVERS 6.05 You don't have to install all of the tools. Choose the Advanced or Custom install options to only install what you want.

Hopefully a proper setup will override whatever is downclocking your GPU. :)

thank you for your advice , but I ve been using the Nvidia system tool until now to over clock GTX 260M, it work pretty good.
From your advice I notice the "rule" that I already looked at it and seethe graph allow the maximum graphic card temperature is 85 C, but on Asus G51 the temp could reach over 100 C and the machine is fine..
..Could you show me how to set rule for the graphic card to prevent it from auto downclock itself  thank you very much

IDirect3DDevice9: :present failed: Device lost (D3DERR_DEVICELOST)

It's not overheating (max 87C) and i've tried a number of drivers.

also the screen keeps blacking out and going back in during sc2

Hey, I have one of these fine computers and have had absolutely no problems with it until just recently. I am not too sure where to turn.Hopefully this forum is active and maybe somebody out there knows whats up with my laptop.
When i go to boot the computer, it freezes up on the first boot up screen that says Republic of Gamers and what not. If i display the BIOS post message, i notice the freeze occurs when "Checking NVRAM...". I have not a clue as to what happened.
I started to have the problems when Windows 7 started to lag while on the start up screen. I then got a blue screen. I did not happen to catch the stop code.
Any help would be awesome. I am at the end of my rope with this one. Please and thank you.

@Blackout767 first go into the BIOS setup by hitting F2 when your computer first turns on and in the menu select reset to user defaults.

If that doesn't fix it, take out one stick of RAM at a time, maybe some of your RAM is going bad.

    Hello all.

I just got the thermal paste and I have been following the video several pages back, but I am stuck on the keyboard removal. Its hard to see because his cameras recording is poor and I am afraid to try more cause it seems to be scraping some of the paint off.

I dont know of anywhere else I can see it with proper light, so can anyone offer some help? I have been going at it for a while and Im not getting anywhere

ed: I might have already damaged it. If it is so it will be months before I can replace it :(

Ok, so I tried with knives and other stuff until it came off. Now I just gotta get the gpu off the motherboard... Why is everything stuck together with such strength? Even the screws were as if welded on the damn thing!

Sorry to the ones above, but I've to add another question.

Is there a real reason why my Windows Rating yesterday got down to a 5.2 for Windows Aero (Firefox 4.1 was running during the test) und today it is up to 6.8 ? Is Firefox eating so much resources?

My modem went bust so I had to get another, but my laptop is working fine. I think I messed up a bit the pasting, but I still got like 15-20 degrees drop on the GPU. The CPU didn't seem to change much, but I never had problems with that.

I also broke 2 screwdrivers (Husky) that were brand new and I hope the warranty can cover that :p

Thanks a lot to all of you who gave info and linked that video.

Well I tried removing one stick of RAM at a time, but it ended up doing the same thing. I don't if you had anymore suggestions. I don't know for sure, but it may be a a motherboard problem. In that case, I might need to get a new laptop... I'm hoping for a solution here!
    Again...
    Please and Thank you.

Just wondering if it's possible to buy a newer, higher resolution screen (1920x1080) for my 1600x900 version of the laptop. Anyone know where I can be sure that I'm getting a better screen and not the same one I have now?

EDIT: Will this work in either of the G72 models?

I installed a 1920x1080 screen in my G72-RBBX05 from laptopscreen.com which is the same company as screencountry.com, it is now full HD but you won't notice much of a difference unless you have screen issues currently. The screen they shipped me is a Philips and the glossy model was around $140...of course after it arrived then I received the notification email telling me they had the matte version back in stock and I believe it is $80. I did have to find a different connector cable on ebay for $20 because the connectors on the full HD screens are on the rear right side of screen and RBBX05 cable does not reach. I can look cable model number up for you if you don't find it, on my mobile now.

Do you think that it would be better to upgrade something like the RAM in it rather than the screen then if it can't be noticed very much? Also, different question, what would be the absolute highest that the graphics temp should be in the laptop? I was thinking about overclocking but with Furmark I get up to 85C max and 59C idle.

EDIT: Also, apparently my laptop doesn't downclock the graphics card when it's not in use, is that a known issue or a big deal?

I just noticed the lights on the keyboard are not turning on. I am pretty sure I connected everything properly, so I hope I didn't ruin it.

I rarely use it, so I guess I don't care.

Tell me if you try it :p

There are several videos on you tube ... Apparently this is a very common problem with ASUS notebooks. ASUS will not acknowledge it is a defect. Therefore, if you are out of warranty, you have to pay to have it repaired. Not impressed with ASUS!

I have been reading these threads trying to find if anyone had the answer to my issue. I currently have the best buy model G72 and love it. I am currently have the slow down issue on my laptop which requires a restart. I understand it could be heat or issues like that. However, I only have the slow down issues if my laptop has been closed. If i reset my computer before I game I have never had a graphical slow down issues. However, I do not want to have to reset each tiime I play. Any suggestions or fixes will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I own the g72gx-rbbx09 laptop. After reading some earlier posts I have a couple questions. First of all my computer suffers from both the screen flicker problem and the high gpu temp problem. Has anyone figured out a real solution to the screen flicker problem or does it vary from person to person? I have seen the video for taking apart the g72 and applying thermal paste but I have never take apart a computer before so I'm a little bit scared to do it, should a person with almost zero experience attempt to do it on their own? Also I may be wrong but it seems like the video was for the rbbx05 but would it be the same for my model?

Sorry about the block of text but if anyone can help it would be much appreciated, I paid so much money for this laptop but these problems make it near useless for gaming. :(

I found this fix Asus G71 White Screen Flicker Fix - YouTube to cut down on the flicker (if by flicker you mean when the screen turns all white and goes berserk) if not fix it completely. Also, I have a question for you while I'm here, do you still have the stock Republic of Gamers desktop background set on your laptop?

Alrighty guys, i've got a little WebCam problem. I was wondering how i make the WebCam work. I'm trying to run Skype and it says it's not found. It's also not working through Omegle. So i go to the Device Manager, and under Imaging Devices, i see USB Camera, i'm assuming this is it. Well i click it, uninstall it and reinstal the drivers through Device Manager. Then i click to make sure the drivers are fully updated. Still, nothing works. So i go to Asus' website and download the drivers from the support section for the G72GX. I downloaded and unzipped both the Chicony and Suyin drivers, and ran both of them. They both came up with an error message saying, "USB2.0 UVC 1.3M/2M WebCam" and "error" in the window title. Not sure what that means, but clearly, it's not finding the webcam, even though device manager says it's good to go. Any help would be appreciated!

hey guys, how's it going? Long time reader, first time posting.. hehehe. Anyways.. i'm having a problem with my g72, i've been running it all stock with no overclocking involved and its been doing great, but i've been wanting to experiment with overclocking the gpu. i've read every single post from begining to end on this threat bug i cant seem to find the solution to my problem, i updated to the latest nvida drivers, did a cleaned out all the old drivers with driversweep, it seems to run a bit better, even deactivated the sleep mode so no more frame drops, but i've been trying to oc the gpu using the nvidia performance tools, but everytime i make a change and press apply, nothing seems to happen, am i doing something wrong?

Set your custom clocks using the NVIDIA performance tools, then click, "Save to profile." This will create a .nsu file that you can use to apply your OC settings. Save it to wherever you want. While using GPU-Z and CPU-Z to read the clocks, on occasion the first double click on the .nsu file does not apply the settings for me. It says that it was successful, but the clocks don't change. However, on the second attempt it always works. Good luck. I hope this helps.

I figured a lot of people by now would of stopped using these things...been seeing a lot of people talking about how they haven't aged gracefully...of course I forgot I had a login here till I saw a post I wrote a while back.

So, here are some updates. My G72GX is actually running about as well as the day I got it, with some exceptions. My optical drive got "jammed" and you now have to manually pull it out after the solenoid unlocks it; one of my side panels looks like it's not fitting well....oh, and it's dirty as sin...but I use it a lot.

Anyway...as far as graphics...I used to get the random slowdowns that required a reboot...but I haven't lately. I've tried updating the drivers but, for some reason, this lowered my framerates. I think I did finally get recent ones that worked well, but for a while I was having issues on that end. I still get the random white flicker once in a while...but it comes and goes in waves.

My biggest problem right now has been overheating....I've been collecting a TON of dust in the fan area. I noticed this the other month when Burnout Paradise started dropping framerates like a rock...so I removed the fan and blew a huge load of dust out from the aluminium fins in front of it. I tried playing Borderlands last night to the same effect...so another can of compressed air fixed it.

I gave up on my GeekSquad warrenty after they sent me a power brick that wasn't up to required specs. I used it...but it wound up burning where the changable tips plug in to the brick cable...and I mean it burned and melted it pretty badly. They were unwilling to help me anymore on that issue...plus they were giving me a bunch of crap about it being dirty, saying i'm probably abusing it.

Has anyone discovered a reliable way to disassemble this thing? I'd like to swap all the thermal compound out myself, but I can't get to the GPU and such to do everything.

I haven't booted Borderlands up yet, but I do know I can barely hear my fan running.

SteelersFaninMA: looking at your speedtest graphic...you must be on the same 25/25 fios connection I am because I also get around 31/25. Except I'm down here near DC.

    @ dewdude,

Yes, I have the FiOS 25/25 package.

Below is the G71GX disassembly guide from Britishdude1 on youtube. I can confirm that it is nearly identical to a G72GX disassembly as I used it to re-paste the CPU and GPU in my G72GX. My son also has a G71GX. Cleaning the fan regularly should become part of your routine maintenance to avoid overheating.

I also have added copper heatsinks applied with Sekisui thermal tape 5760, (purchased on eBay) to both Asus notebooks as posted earlier in this thread by ren3g7ade. His picture: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4047/4264568725_96781a902c_b.jpg If you go this route, you'll need to remove the black thermal tape from the heatsinks before applying the Sekisui tape. It's a bit of a pain, but I can assure you that the black tape won't hold for long and if you use it you will end up with a notebook full of loose heatsinks. Good luck!

I'm having the same problem as you dewdude, I watched the video's that SteelersFAN provided and they are very informative. I'm trying to work up the courage to disassemble it myself now but I am still confused about the GPU heatsink, some people have mentioned the use of copper shimmies when dealing with the GPU heatsink but I don't know why or where to get the shimmies. Let me know how it worked out for you dewdude and what your solution was for handling the GPU.

you guys can use those videos, or you can use the disassembly guide that I have, that was sent to me by a member here, I can't remember his name.

At any rate, I have the file still, I can forward it to you easily. It is a very useful tool when doing this job, but be careful and make sure you are following the steps exactly.

I removed my card and bought a piece of copper that I clipped up and placed under the heatsink in certain places to replace the poor sponges that asus placed in there.

It has been several months, and I leave the bottom cover off, but I idle at 47* C on the cooler, 59*C under load. I am pleased with the job, it made a big difference and will continue to for a while. I used the diamond paste. In fact I am upgrading the CPU this week to a qx9300.

Anyone who wants this file can email me @ [email protected] and I will go ahead and forward that .pdf to you.
