Well, I put a T9600 in my G72 and it's getting along well but now back to the major problem.

I can't overclock my video card far enough with any level of stability. Heat has be a non-issue so far as I clean the thing out regularly.

Does ANYONE know for a fact if you can just alter the vbios for the 260m in the G72GX, to run at 1v instead of 0.95v without bricking/damaging/destroying the computer/gpu?

This is my only computer, and there's no repair shops, and I really don't have enough income for major upgrades/new computer. So I'm trying to get everything I can out of this.

But if it's trashed, then I'm SOL. So far the furthest I've got the GPU with any level of stability is 540/830/1300. Any further and I end up with a driver crash message in most games. Sure 600/950/1500 will work for benchmark tests, but eventually they will crash in the same manner. I figure it's being starved for voltage, but I really don't know. I have never BSOD'd from OCing the GPU.

    Hello all,

I recently purchased the bottom case of an ASUS G72GX in order to remove the port covers and replace a broken one on my own G72.

Does anyone know how I can remove and install the covers as safely as possible? Since I only need the right-side cover, I can use the left one to practice on. My internet connection isn't consistent enough to look at the "Remove a video card from G72" video on Youtube that might show the proper method, so text and/or photo based instructions would be appreciated.

    Thanks for any assistance.

I accidentally broke one of mine off about 6 months ago. One of the small tabs on the end broke, but was still holding on by a thread. I was able to super glue it and put it back on. I haven't had a problem since.

I don't think there's any secret to it. I put one tab into it's slot and then bent the cover in the middle to get the second tab in. It took some force to bend it enough and I thought it would break, but it didn't. FYI, The disassembly video does not cover this... No pun intended. You could always just replace the bottom of the case with the new one, but it doesn't sound like you're up to it. So, if there's any easier way, hopefully someone will share it. Good luck! :)

    Hello to all G72GX owners!

I have a G72GX rbx-005 (bestbuy model) my current stock specifications: Intel core 2 duo p8700 2,5 mhz, 6 gb RAM, gtx 260m ... I have some questions. What CPU I can replace instead of my p8700. I have read some forums about G72GX and founded that some owners tried to set the core 2 extreme x9100 but they had problems with battery (when charger is unplugged notebook are going to reboot and CPU frequency are going to 1500 anyway something like this). So is it possible to use X9100 on my G72GX instead of my P8700. Could you give any advices about CPU replacement, what cpu will work better on G72GX (T9900, T9600, X9100)? And the last question is it possible to upgrade RAM from 6gb to 8gb or higher? Thanks a lot for your advices and response! I have also read that rbx005 have some limits (you can't install some cpu's on rbx 005)

Thanks Steel! While I do have the tools and enough ability to follow instructions required to replace the case, I'd wanted to avoid having to so if possible. Remodeling an entire bathroom just to replace a roll of toilet tissue, in other words.

Using your port cover install method in reverse allowed me to remove both covers. They're pliable enough to bend a good ways.

Once you bend the cover enough, you'll be able to simultaneously push one side of the cover out of the holes that secure the piece in place. The other side will then slip out easily.

When installing the cover, slide one of the small tabs/prongs into it's respective hole in the bottom case. Bend the cover enough to work the other side in there, then pop it in.

My laptop is whole once again. Thanks!

and i want to know if it has been confirmed that it will not accept core 2 quads, i have read the final verdict thread and it states that anything related to BB or RX05 related has had a motherboard that cannot post with a quad core, so before i make a purchase is this true for this unit

Update or uninstall and re-install the drivers? I'm not sure, just throwing it out there. Have you checked the Device Manager to see if it lists any issues with the USB ports?

From what I've read in this thread, the Best Buy versions do not support quad core processors. I think it has something to do with the pin layout.

Anyone know if a 'replacement' lcd with 120hz 3d would work with the g72gx? I have the BB model. It would be great to have even though the gpu doesn't have 3d blu-ray acceleration. One that would work with the g74sx for a swap later when I decide to upgrade. If you have any knowledge please post.

I just recently bought some of those heatsinks you recommended me on page 66 or so in this thread lol
But is it really necessary to use the Sekisui tape to attach them? Won't the tape that comes with the heatsinks be enough? Or do I understand it correctly that they will just suddenly loose their grip and fall off after awhile?

The black tape will hold for a short while, (a few weeks to a month or so) but I guarantee they will come loose and you'll have a notebook full of loose heatsinks. This I know from experience.

I have two Asus notebooks and I went with the Sekisui tape on the first one. In about a year, only one or two heatsinks have come loose, and by that I mean, during routine dust cleaning I noticed that they weren't sticking well, but did not completely come loose and fall off. I added heatsinks to the second notebook a few months later and was not up to the task of removing the black tape and applying the Sekisui tape. To make a long story short, the second notebook now has all heatsinks with Sekisui tape. So, it's your choice. Either change the tape now, or later. Good luck!

    Hola,
new to this site. So I have the g72gx. I've had it for a while. it's made it to Afghanistan and back. It handles all todays games like SKYRIM. but it tends to overheat quickly.. I was thinking about repasting it.What mods could I do to bring the heat down? I would love to keep playing Skyrim as i'm addicted... lol Also this laptop can do the nvidia 3d vision awesomly. I watched Green Latern 3d on it no problem. It only does this with gaming.

Does anyone know the part number for the lcd cable referred to in this post? I've got a G72GX Best Buy model and now that there's no more warranty to void, I'm toying with the idea of beefing it up just a tad with a 1920X1080 screen and a solid state drive (or 2, if I can find some place that actually has the hard drive caddy in stock without marking it up 500%).

The Asus online store doesn't sell the lcd cables, but they do sell the hard drive caddy, $22.50 + s&h... They are currently out of stock, but you can call them and get an idea on the wait:
    Hard Drive Caddy

You can also get the caddy from ebay for $39.95 +s&h:
GENUINE NEW ASUS G72 G71 G60 SERIES SECONDARY HARD DRIVE CADDY WITH SCREWS | eBay

Ebay also has some G71 lcd cables which I believe will fit the G72 for $35, (they look identical) but I don't know if it will work for the 1920x1080 screen:

What is the maximum amount of RAM the G72GX can support? I've seen a lot of conflicting information on various websites. Many claim 6gb is the max, but just as many claim 12gb works as well.

LaptopScreen.com has repositioning cables for LCD connectors:

Just ask their support for it before ordering.

If you are looking for the best looking 1080p panel,
go with LP173WF1 (TL)(B3) Matte panel:

I'm pretty sure that you'll need to replace the bottom of the notebook case, sometimes called the under carriage. I believe there was someone a few pages back that had to do this. From there it's your choice to actually replace the case or take the the port doors off of the new one and put them on your current laptop.

I recently Took apart my G72gx due to heat issues. Clocking 90 to 100 C in game with a cooling pad. Cleaned out the dust, applied new thermal paste. And i go to turn it on, Getting super excited ( I never heard the fan run that powerfully before) And to my dismay I receive nothing but blue LED's and a black screen. I tried connecting to a TV via HDMI or an older moniter through VGA, Nothing. Although i do not think the laptop would normally display on these devices without telling it to via video options, i am a bit worried.

I used the 4 part video's for the g71 dissasembly and followed them to the Tee, and went backwards through it, (every 30 seconds) Making sure i did everything in the exact same order. Black screen.

I used to have the flicker screen problem, but usually only required me to the touch the scren connecters just barely to fix it when it did occur.

So far i have compeled removed and reconnected the monitor and grounds to no avail. I am really hesistent to take the whole thing apart, because it is a pain and the , and i do not want to use the rest of my thermal paste.

Another note is when i put the video card back into the slot, after a few moments it would Pop Up so to speak to the 45 degree angle which you can pull it out @, could this possibly mean that i did not put it all the back in to begin with? Or is this just the natural state until it is screwed in.

The LED's on the back of screen are lighting up as normal.
Also i noticed that the introductory noise upon booting the machine up did not play. What could this mean?

What are the possible things that could have gone wrong during assembly? Is there anything else that can be double checked besides the screen connectors/grounds and the video card itself?

    Hello Guys!

I have had my G72GX BBY edition for almost 2 years now. I have loved it to no end.

Recently I have been having some issues that I hope someone can help me with. I have been playing Battlefield 3 with no issues, and when I would go to start the game, it would state that the drivers were out of date. So I updated them and my PC was fine for abour 3 days. Last night, I was playing Dungeon Defenders and the video locked up. Everything else worked, but the video stopped, and then a min later the everything froze. I always have temperature monitors up, and when I looked, the GPU was at 180 F and the CPU was at 156 F. The GPU was a little higher then normal. Normaly it is at 174 F. So I restarted, and the computer ran for 10 min and the same happened... Fustrated, and stopped playing DD and started BF3 after restart and it ran for about 2 hours. When I went to exit the issue occured again.

So I went to uninstall the drivers to install the older version and the laptop bluescreens when I go to uninstall on a nvidia file. After all that, I unplugged all of my usb and external monitors, and attempted and it allowed me to just install the older drivers, not unintall the newer one, which is strange.

Can someone help me with this? I am just looking to put the old drivers back as I had this issue when I first got the laptop as well...

I am going to get a air in a can today and try to clean it, but yesterday when I checked it, it was not so bad. Also can someone recommend a cooling pad?

    Many thanks in advance :D

    -Julius

    TIP 1- Wireless doen`t work
(Try pushing FN+F2 then when the graphic on the bottom center of the screen comes on (looks like a little cell phone tower) click on it with your mouse. Make sure the checkmark is in the box) I too thought it was just a screwed up driver deal...but an hour of button punching I managed to get it to come back on. Next time it goes out...you know, Windows says there's no wifi networks...and the status light on the front isn't on, try one of these things..because it just did it to me about an hour ago. Press Fn+F2, this should kick it back on. If that doesn't work...go to network and sharing center in control panel, and on the left, click "Change Adapter Settings"...find the Wireless connection, right click and select "disable", after that's done, flip the wireless switch on the right side of the computer to off. Now, flip it back on, right click on the connection and hit enable. This has kicked the wireless back on every time.
    TIP 2
Stock clocks for the GTX 260M are 550/950/1375, but ASUS ships them out downclocked to 500/800/1250. You can use the NVIDIA Performance Tools which is part of the NVIDIA System Tools 6.05 to set the clocks and save them to a config. It is accessible through the NVIDIA control panel. On exit you will be asked if you want the system to default to these on boot. Say 'Yes' here to run @ those speeds normally.
    TIP 3
Yeah that sound had to go, really annoying when I boot up the computer late at night or in the morning when the family is sleeping - :p
You can turn it off in the bios. I'm not sure the exact location. I don't have my laptop with me right now.
    TIP 4 Flickering display
It most likely an issue with the monitor's connections. Take off the little hinge covers, check the connection, then move the brown wire around until it is in a position that doesn't put stress on the wire. I've had that problem every few months. Any kind of flicker, weather it is the white flicker, or the dimming flicker seems to stem from this.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...-asus-g72gx-owners-lounge-81.html#post6622998
Basically, to fix the problem, just power off the laptop and remove the battery, then snap off the plastic covers that cover the screen hinges (they pop off easily). I'd say disconnect both data cables and then both of the black ground cables (you'll need a small Phillips) and reattach them firmly (don't break anything!). I tried to position the black ground cable in a way that there was no possible way closing the screen would put any strain onto it.

If you'd like a video to help you, check this link out. It's for an Asus G71 but it's similar enough to the G72GX to help out.
Asus G71 White Screen Flicker Fix

ps: this post is for everyone that had some problems with flicker, Before the solution, I try a lot of miraculous ideas, but the solution is very simple. I thinked in LCD inverter, Video card with problems, monitor going to dead, video driver, etc. The problem is just a cable a little bit out of the slot.

SO I saw this question around pages 40-50ish about this weird noise like brrt from speakers and a bad lag in video. I had this problem on this laptop it happened because the power cord where it plugs into the laptop went defective and kept losing connection and jumping from a/c to battery and back. I went into settings and made all stay the same for both modes battery and a/c and the issue was fixed. Asus replaced the brick and I don't have to worry about the issue anymore.

So guys, it seems that i have a problem here... With my USB.
I dont remember when it started but my USB doesnt work each time i restart, or shut down my laptop. The only option is, to uninstall all the drivers. I do that every time. Every time i need to restart my laptop. I attach some photos so you can see what exactly I do.
It seems that it cant remember all that drivers, or something, I`m completely lost.

So, I just recently got my G72 back up and running after the hard drive went. It's been fine for the most part, but the "Fn" key only works on certain functions. It only works to change the brightness of the keyboard and monitor, and to turn the monitor off. It won't work for the volume control, overclocking, turning touchpad off, or anything else. Any way to fix this?

EDIT: Now that I've looked more closely, there are a lot of things missing. I can't overclock at all, and I also can't access the webcam. If I search for either, I get no results.

Quick question...if any one has done the GPU thermal paste (With the copper shims)...what is the thickness? and width?...a lot of ebay sellers mention Asus for 0.5...but there are a bunch of other sizes...Does anyone have a definite answer?

Guys, has anyone managed to find south bridge schematics? I really would like to take a look at it to solder extra pci-e port.

I have one question regarding my G72GX: I bought it from eBay and I think some ASUS software might be missing from it. Namely, two media keys are lacking functionality. My Power, Touchpad and Overclocking buttons work fine but I get nothing when I press the two keys on the left - the Republic of Gamers button and the other one that looks like a lightning bolt into a circle.

Can anyone inform as to what these keys are meant to do and how I might get them to work properly? Thanks!

The circle with the lightning bolt button starts: ExpressGate - Based on Linux, this utility features a graphical user interface, web browser, Skype, and a chat client based on Pidgin. It allows users to fully utilize these features without having to boot into Windows. Using ExpressGate instead of Windows does not help conserve battery life. A fun feature, but not necessary.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the Republic of Gamers Button starts: Direct Console/Direct Console 2 - A utility for controlling Direct Message on your OLED display and Direct Flash (flashing lights) for the ASUS G series notebooks. Depending on the notebook and software version you have, Direct Console also allows your Asus to run at different power states. I'd recommend keeping this utility installed.

I have Direct Console 2 disabled via msconfig>startup and I never use Express Gate.

Try CPUID's Hardware Monitor and/or SpeedFan. Both programs are free to use and monitor all of your computer's temperatures.

Greetings. First time poster here with a problem I haven't seen mentioned here so far. There is a popping sound coming from the left speaker. It originally started after I awoke it from sleep mode earlier today, and it now it happens whenever Windows starts up (EDIT: or when I boot up with the "bomb" sound enabled).

There is no other sound coming from either speaker, and the microphone won't pick up any sound anymore. I can get sound through headphones when I switch to the "HD Audio 2nd Output" setting through Realtek, but the popping doesn't stop, no matter what sound driver I use (Realtek or Creative).

    video-2012-04-08-23-49-22.mp4 - YouTube

Booting in safe mode makes the noise go away but results in a "one or more audio service isn't running" message. Drivers are up to date, and I haven't installed anything in the past week or so. I'm leaning towards a short in either the mic or the speaker, but I don't want to send it in or try to take it apart yet. Has anyone experienced this?

Specs: Win 7 Home Premium, RBBX05 model, p8700 Core 2 Duo.

OK, I figured out the problem, the speaker itself is busted, and it looks like there is nothing that would direct the onboard soundcard to stop sending power to the speakers.

So, does anyone have any recommendations or experiences with USB cards or cards for the Express slot?

A couple of years late to party, but I will be the proud owner of an Asus G72GX RBBX05. Wife recently purchased a refurb from Tiger direct for $579. Been reading the forum for oc tips and what I can upgrade etc.. I know a lot of the posters have moved on to newer laptops, but hope some are still posting and discussing.

I do most of my gaming on my home built desktop, core i7, 570gtx, but always wanted another gaming laptop. I had just purchased an old Dell xps with a single core and 6800 ultra, but forgot to tell the wife. she asked around her work about a cheap retro gaming laptop, and ordered me one. =)

I have not been able to power on the laptop at all. Because I have no charge on the battery. Girl I bought it from said it works fine when has charge. But when charger is plugged there is instantly smoke coming from where it plugged in through. Coming through the speakers.

I'm finally fed up with this and can't take anymore. Every now and then fps in any game just dive bombs. I've exhausted my knowledge trying to figure out the cause. It's not overheating and my processor isn't at 100%. The only way I know to fix it is to put the computer into standby which works for about 10 minutes or so after resuming or rebooting the computer. If anymore info is needed or anyone has an idea please let me know.

I'm pretty sure the graphics card IS overheating, or more specifically hitting a temperature at which it throttles down.

I've never found a way to alter this behavior, but I do see it a lot less now that I have a cooling pad.

It COULD be fixed/tweaked in BIOS, but the odds of ASUS doing that are pretty minimal.

It's not overheating. I've brought the heat up over 72C and it didn't down my fps at all and this can happen at 60C. Something else is the cause.

It's your GPU downclocking which causes this. I have seen this on my G71Gx once in a while. The only way I have fixed it is by cleaning out all my old video drivers during an NVIDIA driver upgrade (i.e. pick the clean option). Not every driver will work I would recommend finding one that works for you. The latest NVIDIA driver seems to work for me.

    Give that a try...
