Read the drive specs and the Intel utility specs carefully.

For example, the newer Intel X25-M drives using the Windows 7 driver should NOT need the utility on Windows 7, but if you use an older OS you'll need the utility.

So, I have been lurking for the past week. I ended up returning my Sager NP8760 for refund. Now I have to decide whether I should go ahead and pre-order the G73JH-A2, or wait until after CeBIT to make a choice on the machine to purchase.

    Any suggestions?

I suppose this could have gone in the other thread, considering this is the Owner's Lounge. Sorry.

Well since next shipment of A1, A2 are in March I suggest you to wait. But even if new laptops come out in CeBit I think it's going to be hella expansive. At the end it's just your choice.

Good point, plus I think anything revealed will not become immediately available anyways. I guess I will just wait to see what the total refund for the 8760 will be, and then pre-order the G73 and hope I receive it in March.

Sorry I have not been so active on the forums, I just can't keep up with everyone. When I come home there are 30+ more pages. Thanks to everyone that has been providing solid information, I am sure there are plenty of lurkers like me that appreciate it.

Just got mine, and this one is a 4-dimm model and the back of the memory says ASU 1333, so I am assuming that is the latency.

many people pre-ordered on Jan 5th because of the new design for g73jh. That's when we expected g73jh to look like past g70 series yet they changed the whole cooling system and stuff.

And why it's possibly seen as a bad choice/risk to invest in for the company. It may also just be that Asus has been given less priority from it's own suppliers. That or Asus just used the A1 model as a teaser for the G73 buyer groups. Either way it clearly appears that Asus was unprepared for the release and was concerned about risky ventures with the release of something that might not sell well if people are hesitant to wait on it. That or they wanted to test the components on less popular/recognized laptops and fix glitches with the buyers of the X1/X3 and A2 models, as a way to then market the A1 once they believe it is ready.

Does anyone remember the SACD drives for cd audio systems? I have owned a Sony hybrid CD/DVD/SACD player for at least 3 years now, and I never used the SACD technology because their never was much to play on it (other than a Pink Floyd album I still haven't bought.) I ended up just plugging the Amp into my PC and playing FLAC.

This might sound absurd to some, though does anyone see Blu-Ray as fading into oblivion/obscurity? If a Blu-Ray movie is just released and is selling for the same price as a DVD; if the Blu-Ray movie costs more to produce, will it be as practical for a manufacturer when competing with DVD for the same price someone is willing to pay? It's sort of like comparing VHS with Betamax.

Although, this is confirmation it should still be popular (and who even sees HD disks anymore?)

Seriously, your basis of argument is an article from November 2008?!?

First off, head over to blu-ray.com and just count the online members. If blu-ray is dying, why are there over 3k active people there at any given moment? Additionally, select blu-ray titles have been outselling their DVD counterparts. Production costs of BD's continues to drop and trust me, they're still making a nice profit off of the sales. Blu-ray has actually injected life into a flagging DVD market which had plateaued a few years ago due to adoption rate. BD adoption rate however is currently ahead of the curve of DVD's in the same timeframe, and continues to grow. Brand recognition is huge- even your grandmother has heard of blu-ray.

Your thoughts that ASUS sees it as a bad/risky move are flawed. Simply put, there has been a lag in blu laser diodes that is causing delays for some players and burners to hit the shelves.

Your arguments are straw man at best and just bad guesswork or fanboism at worst. I will fully disclose that I'm a huge proponent of blu-ray and a huge fan, so these kind of posts irk me, but quoting an article that's going on two years old in the tech industry is like saying that cd's are never going to take off.

    Blu-ray is here to stay.

The part shortage is a mystery, though. Something obviously happened to one of the big manufacturers of BD drives.

Well played, Aramis. Your arguments were well-thought out and were eloquently worded. I agree with your entire statement. The only way BD will die, is if another tech emerged that could produce 1080p video at a cheaper price point. Why on Earth would I want to go back to 720?

Just because people are looking for the best deals on Blu-Ray does not mean they are selling well per argument.

Though yes, Blu Ray sales are doing better because technology is making them more affordable, and generally people still turn to entertainment as a means of escaping reality.
    Blu-Ray 2010

And perhaps the influx of Blu-Ray availability is why manufacturing materials are lacking due to supplying the demand; was my point of contention, playing devil's advocate.

blu-ray.com isn't just people "looking for the best deals" by any means. There are a lot of home-theater enthusiasts discussing the future of the industry and the like. That's like boiling down NBR to people looking to "score a cheap laptop".

While br.com may not be the best example, the rest of my points still stand. The Dark Knight blu-ray sold better than it's DVD counterpart, for example. I agree that adoption of any tech really doesn't start until it hits the right pricepoint for people- the same with DVD's, personal computers, HDTV's, cell phones, and any tech within the last 20 years. Remember how expensive VCR's were originally? They were selling for THOUSANDS of dollars. Of course there was no adoption rate.

Anyway, getting a blu-ray player or burner on this laptop is a very good investment in my opinion. It's what originally drew me to the laptop- it can output HD audio via the HDMI, it can play blu-ray and HD content with ease, and it has a 1080 resolution screen to make the most of current standards. It's not just for gaming, but that's also why I bought one. In my personal opinion, you're wasting some of the laptop's best features if you don't have a player in there at some point.

I'm sure I'm in the minority on that though.

Oh, and 0100 and newbie... thanks. :)

    Blu-Ray Rocks!!!

Been a loyal adopter since I got my PS3 on launch date...own more Blu-Rays then I ever did DVD's.....if you watch close enough you never pay more then $20 for any Blu-Ray....can even get many for $10 or under.

Players are so cheap this year that I almost bought my parents a player....they have no idea what Blu-Ray is all about but they didnt know what Tivo was all about until I gave them one of my old ones and now they cant live without it heh :)

i know i will shock some people, why should we care about having a blu ray player on a laptop. The blu-ray full experience means great tv and great screen size, great sound system , a good reliable blu ray player all of that placed in a decent space to watch it. For that i would prefer to invest $299 in a ps3 to play the role of the blu ray player.

on the road, acknowledging you carry your g73, i would go with any hd content on the hard drive and xbmc, way easier. installation is even portable, you copy your directory and go.

This will be my very first blue-ray. I'm not saying blue-ray is bad in any way. Just that it was expensive than it is now. And, I never had any use for blue-ray. Just never had any. But I do support the technology. Eventually, we may end up green-ray a color faster than blue just speculating. First blue-ray dvd I'll ever own will be Avatar :D

So, instead of upgrading to a BD in the G73, you would rather spend the money on an external BD to rip Blu Rays? Then load them onto your computer? Murphy's Law clearly states that the movies you don't have on your HD are the ones you want to watch.

Here is a question that I don't know the answer to.....How much space does a Blue Ray movie take on your hard drive? The disc itself is like 25GB, right? Even if the movie was only 4GB, that's a great deal of space to take up.

Ultimately, the damn Blu Ray reader upgrade is only $115. Why waste money on other external source?

    Hmmmm.

    I see it like this:

You can wait 2-3 months for the A1

    OR

You can get a SATA BD drive for the G73 and put it in yourself, barring any issues with the bezel swap.

Me? I don't see the point in waiting for BD. BUT I have been watching BD's for 2 years now and the hype has worn.

A BD burner might be different for storage purposes.

Depends... I have seen both 25 and 50GB disks. With a little work, you can strip out everything but the main movie and soundtrack and get rid of the fluff. A 25GB BluRay then can be anywhere from 15 to 24gb, with 21 being on average. I think the biggest DL BluRay I have ripped and stripped is 37GB. I take all my BluRays and rip them this way for my HTPC, as my better half cannot handle disks well due to 'physical limitations'.

Now is it really a 2-3 month wait for the A1s or are you just trying to further upset those of us who are still waiting for ours? As of yesterday Ken from Gentech said there has been no confirmation that we will need to wait that long and it seems everyday people are tacking another month on to the arrival time of the A1's. Where is your info coming from?

    I received a Blu-Ray player free when I purchased a 52" Sony XBR LCD.

I really enjoy the BD videos that I get from Netflix for my $9.95 per month subscription.

When I thought about the Blu-Ray player I realized the only time I would use it is when I'm away.

After playing with my X1 today I realized that it has just barely enough battery power to if I'm lucky watch 1 video on a plane.

Burner sounds fine but the prices are still a bit steep and so are the recordable disks.

Wasn't difficult to go with ordering the X1 and maybe buy the BD burner combo later if prices drop.

Well that's Blu-Ray still. Did you mean 480p (DVD)?

I don't really think for movies you will see ANY difference between 720 and 1080 on a 17" screen.

So saying I am finding it VERY difficult to convince the missus that we NEED to upgrade the 42" 720p (early adopter :( ) plasma to a 50" 1080p.

I will hopefully be getting the A1, but I really only own 1 BR disk and it's my son's Cars. I just can't bring myself to upgrade my large DVD collection for $20-$40 (Oz is stil expensive) a pop.

I'm pretty sure digital distro is a lot more convenient for me and is my prediction of the future. Wow huge call that :p

I personally would go with the blu-ray model simply for the sake of future-proofing the laptop. DVD will be here to say for many years to come but just watch this space when manufacturers and film companies start to fully adopt blu-ray. DVDs would disappear very quickly then, much like the good old days of the floppys. No one thought they would disappear, haha.
