Xoticpc said in an email that they aren't getting their next shipment in (a2 model) until march 4th and even then it's first come first serve. So who knows when I'll see mine. Anyone know when Gentec will get theirs in stock?

Sorry if this has already been covered. I haven't been able to lurk for the past 2 days.

I am waiting too, but if I get a chance at a A2, I will take it.

I just used 2 sided 3m tape till I can rig a better bracket or order one. I'm using that 128gig SSD tho so it weighs like nothing and doesn't vibrate. As for a normal spindle I'd put more effort into a proper cage because of vibrations and such

This is also my first SSD I've used in a comp and OMFG people weren't kidding this thing is nasty fast. When I installed firefox it was like 3-4 seconds...I thought it failed because it went so fast. Totally worth the cash.

Great deal and it has pretty good reviews online especially at its price point and storage capacity.

    *Edit*
It benches at about 235-240 read and 130-140ish write, continuous. It also has better randoms than an intel G2 around 6.9 or 7 mbs.

    *Edit*
I did have to laugh cause when I tried to put in a Ultra III Sandisk SD card for ready boost (No idea if it helps much but even if it helps like 2% it's still 2%) it wont let me because my SSD is to fast and it wont help performance. Kinda makes ya feel all warm and fuzzy.

I too had a conversation with my distributor about going with an A2 and them upgrading to the BD player, said it would get it to me sooner...

No luck with OC on CPU. When I take apart my laptop if I find a PLL code I will consult the guy who makes setfsb and ask him if its even remotely possible to software overclock this chipset/cpu. But I think the answer will be no, atleast not without system specific hacking and a totally different program than setfsb.

the i7 doesnt use "fsb" in the first place its a new form of it called blk or something. The only glimmer of hope is system bios hacking, cpu flashing, or reverse engineering the turbo program and seeing if you can raise it higher (though I think the software is only triggering a bios function and the bios itself is what needs to be edited)

Review? its doing good still a lot of work to do though. I'll have to come in early to work again if I want to finish it by this weekend. Its kind of pointless to do all the game benchmarks I am doing as the system is maxing out all of the older games so easy but its just kinda part of how I do things since people want to know how games both old and new play.

My A2 w/SSD and BD upgrade is in production. I MIGHT see it next week. Woo Hoo!! I don't think I'm going to any more pre-ordering..too much stress.

No IC diamond but cooling doesn't seem to an issue. I need to see if there is a particular bottle of single barrel still available for purchase.

I was told by Donald at powernotebooks that going with the A2 and upgrading to the BD player MAY get me further up in line, but it would surely be after the 4 March timeline before I would get it, and that was per the ASUS rep. he had just gotten off the phone with...

Just incase any of you are like me and did not like the default Asus setup for the disk partitions I found a nice free program that lets you non destructively edit the partitions that works with Windows 7 64bit.

    http://www.partitionwizard.com/

I just turned both of my disks into a single partition since I have 2 500gb drives. I would leave it with 2 partitions if I had a model with only 1 disk.

I was starting to run out of space to install games on the small C: partition, not sure why they didnt use a 50/50 split it was more like 20/80 for the OS disk.

I used the boot disk version, but I am sure the installer version works just as well very easy to use, almost like partition magic but free :D

That gives me so much (false) hope that a bunch of these ended up on a ship heading down under. If they're talking units like 50.... I hope I make it into that bunch

That looks awesome. I may end up using those priceusa.com guys afterall. I don't think we have comparable in Oz yet

Sorry, I just google, try a few things (dl some malware?) play for a week then lose it somewhere on my system. Just had a quick look but couldn't find it :(

When I opened up the case to the X1 I noticed all 3 of the available slots for memory were taken up. Is it possible that ASUS assembled my X1 with 4 x 1gig DDR3? I already have a RMA with ASUS cause both the BiOS and Win 7 say I have 4 gigs when I should have 8 gigs. I might be the first person on planet earth that has to send their G73 back to ASUS. Depressing.

No, everything is stock right out of the gate. I checked to be sure and it's Win 7 HP 64bit. It's just incredibly annoying to have to send this thing back literally within a day of owning it. Would the mem sticks have anything on them to tell me if they're individually one or two gigs?

I have a quick question for current owners after reading the Romanian review.

They mentioned that the touch pad is multi-touch enabled. How good is this? Can you compare it to the multi-touch of a MacBook?

Gabriel Knight, Out of this World, Ultima Black Gate and Dark Seed. Also, there was a Bruce Lee and Wreslemania game on Commodore 64 I was absolutely obsessed with. They NEED to make good remakes/sequels of some of these games.

Just checked my UPS status and it's still sitting at "Emergency Conditions Beyond UPS Control." They better get it to me today... the roads here are much better now.

I just read a rumor the new Macbook Pro may have a 5850 in it -- might have to pick this up to for a more portable machine. My fiance is going to kill me

    Know what would be awesome?

Would be awesome if one of the resellers when they mod a A2/A1 let us know if the HD5870 is MXM or not.

I just Received my G73JH From newegg. Can you do Raid 0 if I add another 500gig Seagate to mine ? And will it make much difference in booting windows 7 and General Performace ? Was thinking about getting a SSD but they are just to expensive

Actually, I take that honor... I received mine with a failed keyboard. Had 8 keys that were coupled with each other. See Sig

    Example: l; 9p -\ ./

Every time you hit one of those keys you got the other as well. :(

Waiting to see if ASUS has a "Customer Service Reserve Stock" to send me a new unit. If not, I will have the one they sent fixed. I don't want to wait till the March 4th "Maybe" date.

RAID in general. If it supports RAID and you have 2 identical drives or more, you're good to go. Provided you know how to set up an array.

It's a minimal gain for the added complexity. Go with SSD assuming you know how SSDs work.

You would think ASUS would have done a better job with testing. It's not like they have 10s of thousands of these out right now. We're among the first to receive this new model. I hope this doesn't say anything about the future of the laptops

That's a pretty blanket statement to make about a keyboard failure that could potentially be attributed to the weather or shipping. Let's not jump on the paranoia train just yet, eh?

    :)
Nothing paranoid about being concerned about quality issues when I got a G73 with 4 gigs of RAM instead of 8 and someone else gets a faulty keyboard. We are some of the first people to get the G73 models so I apologize for expecting a little bit more from a company that is supposed to be at or near the top for laptop quality. It's just surprising to send out a product that doesn't meet the specs. If that makes me paranoid then so be it. I don't think the weather caused the person to put 4 gigs in my computer and not 8.

Missed your post that you only got 4gb of ram- sorry to hear about that!

Makes me wonder if they're hand-assembling these things. Have you opened it up to make sure you don't have bad ram? (Not that that's really better but to be missing DIMMS is just weird).

Not trying to make light of your situation as I wasn't aware of it. I'd be pissed off too.

Speaking of which, I'm vaguely familiar with how they work, and know that I want to have TRIM working, but I have no idea how to verify that I do, in fact, have it working. I at least verified at intel's site that the firmware on my ssd supports it, and I have a utility from them that can apparently be scheduled to TRIM the drive on a schedule (they recommend weekly).

Here is a question I can't find an answer to, and Xotic didn't know either.

If I bought my G73JH-A2 from excaliber, but did not buy the warranty extension from them, can I but the 3rd year extension package from a different reseller? The link on page one just says that I must purchase the extension package within the same country I bought the lappy, and that I have to purchase it within the first 180 days. It doesn't say anything about being forced to buy from the same reseller. Excaliber is not open for 2 more hours, so I can't call them yet. TIA

    I think you can.

Some sites (like buy.com) offer the package by itself and you can add it to your cart with no system.

Not a problem. To be honest I'm not sure I'd know bad ram if it kicked me in the face. With my luck I'll send it in and get back 8 gigs of 1066 instead of the 1333 i have now.

There was a very little "crunch" on the side of the outer box. Maybe FedEx Dropped it. Who Knows ....

I do know that the ASUS Customer Service is very friendly and helpfull. The only question they have not been able to answer is; if there is a reserve stock that they can pull from. I will find that out on Monday or Tuesday.

I wish us both the BEST of LUCK

From what I've read somewhere here on the forums, I think they were always replaceable, but it was non-standard somehow, so you couldn't really upgrade it.

Oh man, I better hold off on the 3rd year upgaded warranty if this thing can have it's GPU upgraded. The cooling system alone is enough to make me just upgrade the CPU and GPU until both are no longer compatible with the MoBoard
