Since I have both right now and unless portability (or fan noise) is an issue I would take the M17xR2 hands down.

So you'll get it Monday? I put the 720 in my M17x. I got to see if it still has power issues.

Actually its not that outrageous... he's basically just reflowing the solder...just has to be careful not to cool the CCA to fast as multi-layer CCA are sensitive to heat and will warp. I would expect the temp to be a bit higher than 180 though. It's also a way to get around removing the conformal coating that most CCA's have now-a-days.

20yrs of fixing AF electronics BTW is my background.

Are you at an altitude higher than 1,000 meters (3,280 ft)? I'll be curious what my temps are as I'm at about 1600 meters (5,450 ft).

For what it's worth, I'm getting about 57/59/54C at 5900ft, and 72F-ish ambient temp.

Edit: Just noticed your location... not far from me. Parker, CO here.

I'm not an engineer, but the temps will be higher where we live because of the lower air density. How much difference it makes, maybe one of the techys on the forum can answer. I wonder how many G73's have made it to CO so far?

Can any of the X1 owners please confirm for me what warranty they were shown once they registered on the ASUS site?
I know box and lappy sticker said 2 years but i only ask 'cause newegg updated the X1 warranty on their page, but it still says 1 yr parts and labour

I will if you can tell me where to find it... It only seems to show me the info I entered... SN, date of purchase, etc.

For what it's worth, the warranty booklet that came with it also says 2 years. I think with the stickers and the card, they'd have a hard time denying a claim within 2 years. ;)

You have to love the gen 2 intels, 7.7WEI for whatever that means, but 26 seconds from pressing power to being able to work and 8 seconds from power down to lights off is a BIG whatever.

Good stuff, and it's got 30GB on it already. Apps are just snapping open.

There is no doubt it is a very nice machine.

    The question is:

Is it $700 nicer machine than a G73JH-A1?

(RGB screen+ SLI video card, but you lose 4 gig of RAM, Blueray and x1 500gig HD)

I'm thoroughly enjoying my X1! I did a backup of Steam from my desktop and restored it to the X1. The load times for Half Life 2 are a LOT longer on the X1. I am running a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Is there a bios setting or something that needs to be redone? Shouldn't a 7200 RPM 500GB be faster than the 5400 RPM 1TB in my desktop?

I just had an interesting thought. According to Asus' just released "What's New" website:

    http://www.asus.com/news.aspx?N_ID=7ZVlycXrZr1TxoEw

They say that their top of the line G73Jh has the i7-820QM. Now as far as I know, the top of the line is the G73Jh-A1. What are the chances that when our A1s finally come in, they will be sporting an i7-820QM?

I know that according to the re-sellers specs it's supposed to have the i7-720QM, but how many times has Asus changed the specs on the re-sellers in the past two months? And as far as I know, no one has actually seen an A1 yet to confirm anything one way or the other.

Wouldn't this be a nice reward for those of us who have waited patiently for the A1s (today's my 40th day of patience).

I don't claim to "know" anything, I'm just speculating, but it's something for us to dream about while we wait,

you mean on top of the free 1333mhz RAM, you are expecting a free upgrade of CPU as well ? :p

If that is the case, I would be *very very mad for paying 500 USD like an idiot to upgrade my CPU.

I assume the A2, X1 owners will be as mad too

Addit- I think here is your answer: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5880050&postcount=1893
The 820 CPU comes with the Swedish model, which cost $3000 USD

There are limited advantages of getting a 820 over a 720. Definitely not $500 worth.

    allanh,

I'm not "expecting" anything (other than getting my A1 someday). This is just wishful speculation. And if it came standard with the i7-820QM, I'm assuming that your re-seller would give you the price of your upgraded CPU back since they wouldn't have to do the upgrade for you. And yes, I realize that the many people who couldn't wait and jumped ship would be very very very angry.

And what model number is the Sweedish model (I don't know). Many European buyers have ordered the A1 at a much higher price than we are paying in the States, so who knows.

I'm just trying to keep my spirits up while I wait,

    NightBandit

I know, saw the benchmark difference between those 2. However, it's just my personal choice.

My point was that it is unlikely for ASUS to give A1 an upgrade to 820 while putting 720 on A2/X1 when the price difference is only $100. :)

hey, NightBandit, I am not hoping that A1s don't get 820. Just saying it's unlikely given the minimal price difference between that and the other models :)

To the person asking about the X1 warranty- it's got a sticker on the lappie that says 24months. Newegg is incorrect in it's listing for the warranty.

I like to think we'll get something special (makes the wait somehow bearable), and that would be sweet. I mean, something caused the delays of the flagship model, and it would be nice if it's not just the BD. Maybe a PM55 chipset (has the RAID), 820QM, an eSATA/USB combo port... that's the ticket! :)

    For you current G73Jh owners.

How long is the AC adapter (from the wall to your laptop)?

I'm trying to determine if I can use my existing surge protector (at a second desk accross my office) or if I need to get a second one.

    Thank you,

So after messing around trying to build some sort of mounting bracket for my SSD, I finally gave up, and just switched it out with the 500GB HDD. I'll just put that in an external enclosure for now until I can get a second HDD caddy. They did say it would be about 3-4 weeks before they would be available, right?

Instead of wasting money, why don't you just wait and not speculate. It's a bag made by Targus with plenty of padding on the back and front of the laptop. I used the bag that came with the G1 for 4 years and it's still in great shape. I see no problems with the one with the G73 either.

If you still want to get a different get a bag, go for it. I'd just wait and hold your judgement until you see the bag for yourself first.

It's not our fault those who have the A2 that the A1 is delayed. It is in no way fair for A1 users to get the 820 upgrade for free when you were only paying more for the measely BluRay drive. A2 users go the 1333 upgrade free, but so has anyone they got the X1, hell even the G51 users have been getting them free, so has the N71 users. And if you get all of the below, you better believe every A2 users will be returning their laptops back to Asus and demand the same upgrades as YOU ARE ONLY PAYING FOR THE BLURAY UPGRADE.
