The only thing I can think of is that the heat softens up the solder joints for the gpu and possibly re-links bad joints. That's still crazy though! haha
-
-
OMEGADRIVERS IS BACK! I hope he releases something good for the HD5870
-
And that is exactly what it does -reflow the solder over weak or cold joints
-
So, if an oven at 180F softens solder enough to FIX a GPU, wouldnt that also mean that a GPU over about 81C would be enough to fry it? lol
-
Sure, its a poor man's reflow oven, but the kitchen oven is probably the last appliance you really want to use for this operation -- a modified toaster oven, electric skillet or hot air rework gun are much safer.

Having said that, there is a world of difference between doing this on a home-made circuit board with about $15 worth of components, and the motherboard of a $1500 laptop. This is certainly a last resort option for a laptop long out of warranty -- and not even necessary in the OP's case as his GPU seems to work just fine.
I'd also like to add that I'm now standing at the back of a long line of G73JH-A2 pre-orders. I've got my tent, sleeping bag, a cooler full of cold beverages, a bunch of snacks and have snuggled in for a long wait. -
it's the xbox towel fix all over again.
-
Doesn't work that way.
Heat generated from an oven around the components is different from the heat generated by electricity within the circiuts
-
It might work if you plug the vents.
-
And watch your system shut down once the temp gets, oh, say 110C
-
Yeah system would probably lock before hand.

I've been able to use my HP Pavilion dv9420 (that's what I'm using now while waiting for my G3jh) by using this method as mine was part of the extended recall for bad nvidia gpu's but my warranty ran out 2 months before my computer quit working. I didn't bake it in the oven, though. I took out the mb, drew a template of it on cardboard, cut a hole out over where the gpu lies, covered the cardboard in tinfoil to protect the rest of the components, and used a hairdryer on full for two minutes, pushed down on the gpu while still hot to force the solder points together, put it back together, and it's been working ever since... 6 weeks now. It still sputters from time to time, but if I push on the keyboard over the gpu, it comes immediately back to life. Haven't had to do that part in over a week so it's running smooth right now. (On my puter, the JKL buttons are over my gpu). Go figure?

I would HOPE so!
If it burst into flames there might be a lawsuit looming..... -

Ah can I ask a kinda noob question do you need cables to add a second drive to X1 version or does it plug directly into the mother board and if you do need cables anyone know where to get them? Thanks.
-
No cables needed, you can just remove the bottom panel and plug it in. You do, however, need a bracket to secure it in place.
To the best of my knowledge, no one knows where to get a G73jh specific one yet. Some people have talked bout using other model's brackets but not sure if anyone succeeded with a perfect fit.. -
Displayport is almost a standard those days and is the unique way to plug a 2560 or a 120hz monitor on a notebook (well... unless it have HDMI 1.3B++).
I'm really interested in a G73JH but if i cannot plug a 2233RZ... =( -
Yeah, I read Mandrake's post. I thought for sure it was Dell only. My mistake on that and I'll be more careful in the future. You can tell I've been out of the PC/laptop loop for awhile.

Thanks alot. -

just heads up. Not too sure if someone has posted it.
G73jh will available with i5 and i3 tho. -
Is there a program you can run to read the HDMI version? I'll see if hwinfo32 has it.
-
Just curious, again...
Any thoughts on the Targus "ROG" XL backpack that comes with certain configurations? My G51VX-X3A fits into my current backpack, but the G73JH definitely will not fit in it...
Cheers,
Kermee -
ITS HERE!!!! :-D I'm letting it warm up gradually before unpacking it. I want to try to avoid any issues with condensation because it's REALLY REALLY cold...
-
Just got mine
After 15 minutes of waiting for the Asus bloatware to finish, I can play now.
First impression is good. Screen is good enough and better than most.
DEFINITELY light! Was surprised by that. lol
It is plasticky but I don't have any build issues. The keyboard does flex a bit but I'm going to overlook it
I am NOT going to get the R2, at least not for a while.
Off to go reformat and bench!!! -
I've thought about this a couple times. Between warehouses, planes, and trucks, these laptops are in the cold for a pretty long time. Isn't this bad for them in some way?
I guess there's nothing really that can be done about that part, but don't people think (like hockeydude) that the laptop should be give at least a few hours to warm up after it's delivered to the customer and in their warm houses? -
congratulations on getting your laptop. Have fun with it !!
-
It really isn't bad unless it gets like sub zero temps. Also if it's very cold and you power it up and everything heats up it could cause water to form on the boards and everything else causing it to short out and fry. But technically you could submerge it in water as long as there was NO power in it at all then let it dry out and it would theoretically run (If you could get it completely dry somehow). But the after effects of that is the traces on the boards begin to rust. Kinda how if you drop your cell in a glass then get it out and it still runs then a month later it wont turn on? The traces on the inside probably rusted.
-
I gave mine a few minutes in the house before I couldn't resist any longer
-
Yea.....the only reason I have it like 10 minutes was because I installed my SSD in the 2nd bay before even turning it on.
-
To those who thought i was just trolling
-
Troll cow!
-
On the Plus side there is a M17x R-2 on sale for a pretty cheap price
-
I'm still trying to come up with a good way of doing this... -
Guys,
Congrats!
Sleey0, I am VERY happy that you didn't have any build issues, or were able to look over the ones Drake had found. Can't wait for you and Moo to get it lean and mean. This thing is pretty dang nice! -

We know that the G73 does not come with RAID, but I was wondering why they left that out? Why would they want to? Seems like a no-brainer to include it since some models ship with two drives.
-
Simplicity sake?
So they would not have 100's of calls from people who messed up their RAID. -
Not trying to start a wide-spread panic here, but my brother got his X1 in today and after we unboxed it while windows 7 was booting the screen flipped out and put blue and white bars all over and crashed. After rebooting and going into the OS the screen would flicker and then eventually do the same thing with the bars.
Using it in safe mode it was ok so I figured it was a driver issue of some sort so I ran home and got my copy of Win7 Ultimate Ed. to put on and it has fixed the screen issue so far except one time when it tried to hibernate it went to a black screen with white lines on it.
We are having a hell of a time getting all the devices reinstalled by using the drivers from Asus website. The camera and audio SRS device simply will not install. Once we get everything squared away we will try some 3D games to see if we can get the issue to reoccur.
-
Well that's good news for the people still waiting.
-
hey, Moo, just curious. Is there any particular reason why you opt out of the M17X-R2 for G73JH X1? It seems like a downgrade to me?
-
More then likely isolated incidents.
For those that have reinstalled can you tell me what camera driver you used? There are 3 listed on Asus's website and 2 come up with errors and the other bluescreens the machine and crashes it. -
So is the best idea for me to use a Windows 7 disk (and use my key) in order to get a bloat free computer. Then I can just add all the drivers.
Sorry I know it is a noob question, but unfortunatly that is what I am at this time. -
Juust called newegg and they upgraded my shipping to next day for free
-
Just bored....
-
I've been holding off a bit on thanking Ken at GenTech for all his help in getting my computer order in place because he's been so busy and I'm sure everytime someone thanks him for getting their computers shipped, he gets slammed with inquiries. But since it's Friday night and he's officially "closed" for business, I just can't thank him enough for the personal service he provided me and the other GenTech customers on this forum. If you look at what the other folks have been saying about Ken and GenTech during this ASUS G73jh release, it's true, he provides incredible service. This is my first foray away from the "box" stores and this is where I will purchase my computers from now on. Thanks go out to all the technical people on this forum who have helped us noobies make a decision that would have been near impossible without it. Peace...
-
I wanted one from Donald but he was sold out and since newegg had them in stock i figured just get it!
-
So, just a quick refresher.....those of you who have just gotten the X1 or A2, what are your idle temps? Using AMD GPU Clock Tool, i'm looking at about ~60, ~66, ~57, respectively. That's plugged in, without overclocking anything. Seems a little warm to me
-
Agreed Ken is doing his best in a difficult situation. It must drive the resellers crazy that they have been fielding questions and taking orders for well over a month and then the Egg comes in with a bunch of units and creams the market. Not smart business in the long run, ASUS, in my opinion.
Anyway I exchanged e-mails with Ken today and he is also willing to ship A2s in lieu of A1s to those in line if he gets that model first. Contact Gentech if you're interested; I'm not sure yet how cost works out if you want him to upgrade an A2 with Blu-Ray. -
Is anyone playing Dirt 2? What settings are you using and what what's your benchmark results?
-
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Seems to me also, what's your ambient?
I get 52C, 57C, 52C with performance setting (plugged in) and about 71F ambient. No cooler, just sitting on desk in idle. -
I did it.
The cost is $115 dollars for Blueray installation on A2.
btw, they install 4X Blueray player on the A2. From rumour, I heard some other resellers install 2X? It would be nice if someone can confirm the price other resellers charge them for the blueray installation on A2. -
lol, sounds like you get bored of laptops quickly
btw, the deal you are offering is excellent value.. I would have made an offer had I not already paid for the G73JH
