No way.
There is plenty of stock at newegg while asus has zero G73's.
You'd get your replacement from newegg much quicker, IMO. They probably just turn it on when they recieve it an verify the issue, then send a new unit to you.

This is unbelieveable. I just got my X1 and newegg didn't bother to box it. I turn it on let it do it's thing. I have the 4G bug as well!!! I took all 3 rams out, it refuese to boot up. the screen is black. I leave one ram in, it reads 4G. I put 2 in and it reads 6G but only 3.93G is useable.
I tested all 3 rams and same thing, so they're all working. I can't do anything about the last ram as it's on the other side and I can't acess it. So with all 3 rams in it reads 4G, with 2 rams in it reads 6G but less then 3.93G is usuable. Only with 1 ram in it reads 4G. Not having any rams, the laptop won't boot. I believe this is a software issue. I called Asus, and their system is down. Someone is supposed to call me back within the hour, but i told them to call back tomorrow as i have to go to work.
-
Seems that the 1 stick of RAM that is near the cpu is bad or not seated.
Take all 3 out, and it doesn't boot yet it should as there is 1 2GB stick still in the system.
And, after you started putting them back in 1 by 1, it added up perfectly if the other (4th) stick is bad or not installed. -
I am calling first thing (their time) I'll post their responce on the Stock and 1333 ram.
We're in it together -
I have my G73 and i do love it. The M17x is much nice for the performance and even for the price i paid( less then full
) its just overall a nice laptop. But this keyboard is kinda hard to get used to... I forsee alot of programming errors for a while.
I played crysis for a while all on high ...and it was smooth and prefect for me -
-
ouch.... just ouch....
-
Let me rephrase my previous question:
Can you comfortably push two keys with one finger, or are they too far apart? -
So out of all the people on this forum I've counted about 5 so far with problems that require return. Is that a lot for the small sample size we have here? What's the usual attrition rate on laptops on this forum? It doesn't sound like you guys were stressing them that much either.
-
Got the machine, finally! Newegg really should have done a better packing job than just putting a label on the box, but I guess it got here ok. It is beautiful. I really like the build. I got the X1 while it was still $1449. It does have 8gb of 1333mhz ddr3 ram in it. All the ram shows up in windows 7, so there is no issue like some others have had. The keyboard works great in my honest opinion. It isn't quite a macbook pro keyboard, but I think it will be more than sufficient for me. (This is highly important for me because I will be using this predominantly for work [writer/translator] and gaming on the side.) I have no screen or graphic card issues so far. The screen looks amazing. The sound is working flawlessly. I will write up a more detailed mini review/set of impressions after I have spent a little more time with it.
I took the laptop to a local computer store to see if I could find a bracket to fit my ssd in with. One of the guys there was fairly helpful (I think half of it was wanting to check out the new machine). He brought out a huge box of various laptop hd brackets, none of which ended up fitting. In the end ,I have decided to just fit the ssd in there with a little extra hard plastic and duct tape. If asus ever gets more bonafide brackets for the g73 in the future, I might get one. Until then, the ghetto rig should work.
I do have a question. I want to start clean with this machine booting from my ssd and just keep the 500gb drive for storage. I booted up the preinstalled OS and found there to be a sheet load of bloatware. My initial inclination is just to install windows 7 fresh from the dvd onto the ssd and then add the necessary drivers and such. Then, clear out anything left on the 500gb drive. However, I just wanted to ask if anyone had any issues doing this. Did all the drivers install fine with a fresh copy of windows. Are there any valuable/necessary programs that I'd be losing in the process? If so, should I manually clear the unnecessary preinstalled bloatware off the 500gb drive and then ghost it over to the ssd? Any help would be appreciated. -

When I call ASUS Customer Service tomorrow I am going to request a full testing of the G73JH before they send it back to me. I am not sure at this point if I am going to get a new unit or the one I had fixed.
Either way, I am going to have them look at the known issues from this forum. I understand that some of these issues (like mine) are random and must be expected from a brand new product line, however, I feel the need to inform ASUS of the all the problems people have had.
Here is a list of problems I have found by going back through the thread. If I have something wrong or I am missing some others, please "pm" me so I can get a comprehensive list. I will be calling and faxing by 12pm Central Time Zone tomorrow.
Thanks for the help

Mine is awsome and to Kevin_Jack
The keyboard is fine don't let them fool you -
I'm not...
But if the issue is raised, I am going to put it forward. I understand that some of these issues may be personal issues, random issues, or may have been caused in the shipping process. I feel that was the problem in my case (coupled keys).
I will also give ASUS a blank statement to this.
Thanks !!! -

And we now return you to your regularly scheduled G73 thread.
Did you say the M17X has a bad keyboard? I liked how it looked due to its full number pad size and arrow keys. -
Just got my A-2. First thing I noticed is that the wireless adapter does not pick up my wireless N network. I have a dual band router. The laptop picks up my G network but not N. What's up with that?
Also, just typing this, the spacebar is having a difficult time registering the key press. -
-
-
YES! lol!
Have you popped in a 920 yet Moo? -
-
Can anyone verify a working SPDIF output?
-
I received my X1 from Newegg on Thursday last week, a day early. I left work in Boston once I found out it was on the UPS truck. 75 miles later door to door I was home just before the UPS truck arrived.
Talk about luck.
I went back to work Today, haven't stopped playing since Thursday.
I've OC'd the GPU to 800MHz and 1100MHz with no apparent issues.
No problems so far, knock on wood.
I count myself lucky as I've had tons of returned computer parts in the past.
My job is computers mostly rugged laptops servers desktops, application development, a little of everything.
I touch a different type of keyboard every day so my touch typing is getting worse over time. To tell you the truth I like this keyboard.
I feel for you guys that are having problems, being the instant gratification guy I am.
I just wanted to say this is one fantastic machine, so hang in there.
BC2 here I come, I'm the guy that makes your score go up quick. -
Took out the boot drive out of my A2 and put in another 500gb drive. Doing the fresh install dance right now: install/reboot/install/reboot...
78 processes were running when I booted it up out of the box. Sheesh. -
with 8 gigs of RAM and a quad core i7... your worried ?
-
got mine about an hour or so ago, took a typing test to test the keyboard, and i love it, got 104wpm with 100% accuracy, no keys skipping.
-
Did anyone ever figure out if there is a benifit to upgrading the Wireless card or not?
-

The keyboard is driving me crazy. The spacebar does not work half the time. I can see that it is not flush with the rest of the keys. One end of it kind of curves up.
I wouldn't mind taking it off and re-seating it, but I'm not sure how these keys come off. I don't want to break it. -
-
Call Asus and have them send you a new keyboard. I think they'll let you replace that as you don't need to open the system to take it off.
Be prepared to meet some tape that can bring the hulk to his knees though. Seriously, that was the hardest part of getting into the G73.
Some genious decided to use some double sided tape under the keyboard I have never seen stick like that. lol -

Hi everybody!
I just pre-ordered the G73JH in the NetherlandsNow the painfull waiting starts...
I have to pay 1900,- = $2580,- for the A1 model. No arrival date in Amsteram yet
. I'm following the info about the G73 since December can't wait to get it in my hands!
Question: Has anybody tried playing HD Audio (DTS-HD etc) via the HDMI? Does it work, or only regular 5.1?? -
-
Shouldn't be a problem. If the blu-ray player can decode it then the RealTek should be able to output it either through HDMI or USB as it supports 7.1/24 bit. And yes someone has been using HDMI audio since he received his unit.
-
Additionally, while you were speaking mostly about SACD, my experience is with lossless audio in HT/movie applications. I'll agree that dynamics and just simply volume end up making a big difference for many people perceptually. However the quality and the dynamic range can largely come from having more throughput and are part of the package when it comes to lossless audio. I feel like my humble setup does a pretty good job of reproducing lossless audio and giving it an airy feel thanks to my bipolar speakers. (If you'd like, PM me and I can link you some older pics of my setup.)
While yes, DTS and DD is "fake" in terms that it's all mixed that way in the studio, that's how it was intended to be heard by the creators and that's how it's played back in the theater. As a result, lossless audio (DTS-HD, TrueHD and PCM) conveys the true intent and the dynamic range, the clarity and the highs that you sometimes lose in compression and bandwidth are all still there in the home setting. Obviously if someone doesn't have the setup to appreciate it, it's still a placebo. However with the proper setup and room acoustics, there is no doubt to me in any way that lossless audio is a step up. Old analog audio is going to hit a ceiling where the quality of the recording simply isn't going to get any better, but it's still nice to hear it as good as possible in that situation. Also, any recording studio- whether movie or music production- is going to have capabilities for recording well past the limitations of DD and DTS. The notion that surround sound vs. 2-channel is bunk is amazing to me- each has their application. For music, many purists feel that 2-channel is the way to go. For movies however, there is no better way to feel truly immersed in the moment than to be in the middle of the sound.
Another thing to note is the potential of "hyperacoustics", a phenomena where the recording and playback in 192khz/24 bit actually has been shown to stimulate more of the brain. There's a neat writeup about it on the Akira blu-ray. It may be total bunk, but I can tell you in my own estimation that I have never heard a more surrounding and engaging playback of audio in ANY fashion than what I heard when I popped in that blu-ray. So there definitely is (again, IMO) something to be said for lossless. Here's an article written by Jeff Kleist (who writes for both blu-ray.com and thedigitalbits.com) on the subject. It's a neat read: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=2394
Hell, if you're in the Milwaukee area, I'll give you a personal demo.
*edit* You edited your post- cheater.Still, my points stand. Also, to clarify, I don't think I believe in "hyperacoustics" but I do believe that Akira is an amazing track and feat of technology. Also... I have simple Monoprice cables in my setup, not some crazy high-priced snake oil.
-
Anyone have the cliff notes for post 1489?
-
TL;DR version: Lossless audio= teh awesome if you have the setup for it.
On a separate note, I don't have another HDMI cable to test the G73, but according to Ziddy it looks like it'll be fine. On laptops I'll definitely defer to him. -
Yes it's mostly placebo and perception and people let numbers, fancy words get to them instead of actually listening to their ears. I have seen Akira Blu-Ray also with the uncompressed audio, it was impressive but not mind blowing. BT's Binary Universe, a true surround music recording is impressive though, still prefer the 2-channel on that recording also.
I agree with the room acoustics. Almost no one has a room treated and setup for fidelity audio. But my point was what people don't realize is that in these more expensive recordings it's the difference in quality of mastering. People don't realize that usually two different studios work on the same recording when released in HD or SD.
But overall I just don't get why people make a big deal out of all this when their speakers, amps, decoders, and rooms all suck and distort the sound anyways.
-
On a sidenote the battery takes about an hour to charge for me. Not sure if that's good or not.
I also watched a Mission Impossible 2 BluRay rip, x264 720, 6K bitrate, while waiting for the train and on the train on one battery run. I couldn't do that before with my old laptop
- Am still amazed Anthony Hopkins agreed to be part of this movie.
Vicious were you able to merge the partitions with the Partition Wizard bootup version? If so can you tell us how you did it? -
Got my X1 last night and I'm liking it a lot. I actually like the keyboard much more than most I've used. Put in a Kingston rebranded Intel SSD(7.7 wei
), reinstalled win7 and the thing runs great.
I missed installing the sound driver and whatever default it found would only drive the right speaker. I was worried I was going to be laptopless for 2 weeks RMAing. Installed the sound driver from the asus site and that fixed it up.
Someone needs to make a list of essential drivers for reinstall. I've been out of the CPU loop for a while... do I need to install anything for the i7 boost thing to work? Also, I think I read something about new catalyst drivers coming out today? -
The reason I asked if I can play DTS-HD etc. is because I sometimes download BR movies and I don't want to burn them (I don't even have a BR burner). My last notebook (Sony Vaio) can't play 5.1 sound through the HDMI cable. It sucks when I don't to go outside to rent a movie.
My HT setup is:
Samsung LED 46B7020
Yamaha Z7
Yamaha BD-S1900 Blu-Ray
B&W CM7 CM1 CM center ASW 10CM
With this setup you'llnotice the difference between True HD/DTS HD and regular 5.1. This is a real big difference.... and no I do not hear hear the difference between a speaker cable of $10 per meter or $50 per meter. -
Well I think I might just end up keeping the desktop and snagging a T400 from work cheap to use for mobile work. I cant return my Asus G73JH-A2 without a restocking fee, wondering how much could I get for it?? Its brand new in box btw...

Would it be a bad Idea to download and install directx 9.0 c on this computer?
Reason I ask is because I'm trying to do some modding/tweaking to Elderscrolls III which requires directx 9.01 c. But I don't want it to replace the stock version of directx that comes with the G73. Is it possible for multiple versions of directx to co-exist on the same computer?
