Why are the GPU temps so high? I'm hoping a really heavy load.

Ninja edit: Just saw you were playing Crysis, I guess that is why.

Even crysis it doesn't run that hot. On a real heavy load I get low 80's.

I've been meaning to thank everyone who recommended Gentech PC. I was blown away by their service and attention and Ken was exceptional and very informative. Again thanks to everyone who contribute to these discussions. Peace.

Are those CPU temps normal as well because that's around the range I'm getting. Haven't done heavy gaming on my GPU yet so I'll check temp for that later.

did you have to pay extra for upgrading A2 with a Blueray or is it just the original A1 price?

I got that after 10 minutes of furmark but not that hot when playing Borderlands. Some apps will get the 5870 up there in temps so we'll see how the they end up lasting.

Don't know how you got them to cross-ship, daddyd.

    Newegg won't budge for me.

I explained that yesterday they had over 100 X1's and today they have 80. By the time my RMA gets approved it will be next week and I can almost bet they won't have any. The rep was like "well, I am showing plenty of stock" like she wasn't even listening. I even said a buddy of mine just was able to cross ship a few days ago and no response. I was like W TF?!?

I'm going to think twice next time before ordering from newegg again...

I hope this will offer some consolation here..... based on my experience with NewEgg RMA's, they normally test your return and approve replacement, much quicker than they show in their return policy.

Hopefully you will hear from them soon!

    Good Luck!

I still can't get over how expensive the MacBook Pro 17" is!!! $2,400 is incredible compared to even an Alienware nevermind the G73.

I just don't get it. I fiddled around with the MacOS again and man it feels sluggish. Even the OS feels outdated, so that no longer is an excuse. For video of course PC wins with the atrocious video options from Apple. And for sound, yeah there is more software for PC now than there is for Mac.

And as an anime fan, well, anime community will just laugh at you and tell you to get Windows or Linux.

Bleh, just thinking, rambling, offtopic, and baffled. I guess having a brand name shiny silver garbage is really important to some people. Do they dream of Steve Jobs giving them a hug for throwing their money at him?

I can't remember the last time I had an issue with Windows crashing like the Apple morons claim. I can't remember the last time I had a virus infection. It must be a good 12-15 years. Maybe more.

When Steve Jobs dies, I woudn't be surprised to read about some Mac cult group committing mass suicide.

I do not understand Apple fanboyism. Like I know some smart people that love Apple. It is really sad how they have been brainwashed into liking such a product.

    $2,400 for a core 2 duo LOL

Hides in the corner waiting for the hand of Steve Jobs to smite you. Or the Apple fans hiding in the forum somewhere.

Apple fans are the biggest zealots, followed closely by linux and then unix warriors.

And usually that c2d is underclocked because macs cant dissipate the heat well enough :p Just look at the macbook airs. Apple has always had a great marketing department, nothing more. Just shows how many people out there really don't know what their paying for.

Have you asked questions to an Apple salesperson in an Apple Store? It's scary knowing people buy Apple products from them and believe they made the right decision. One dude all he could tell me was it had anti-glare screen and that the MacBook performs better than my Asus because it didn't have anti-glare. I'm not kidding.

Ok that's enough from me. I tried Borderlands, and wasn't for me. I don't like games where characters can take 6 rounds right in the face and live.

The Asus G73 is wide due to the fan setup in the back. So no idea if it would fit or not, I'd suspect no.

Also you don't want to do that anyways. It's much too big.
    - It would be very easy to drop the G73, why risk it? Walking around, someone bumps into you, good luck with that. Someone running by, smack. It's not a netbook or a small 13" laptop. At work if I have to move the laptop walking across the building, I use my backpack, I don't carry it in my hands. It's not worth the risk of someone bumping into you.

I only use the sleeve first, and put it in the backpak..like double protection.
I would only use the sleeve for protection while sitting around, not to care elseware. Sixe of lappy fits the size of the sleeve (HxW) just not sure of the depth.

Did you ever reseat the rams? I noticed that on my laptop one time. I had all the rams in and the laptop would not turn on, no lights on the keyboard just the blue power lights. I couldn not turn it off without pulling out the cord. Once I reseated the rams, it booted up again with no issue.

I just tried newegg again and got the supervisor. Same result - no cross-shipping.

He stated that they would "expedite" my RMA once they recieve it but I don't see anyone wanting to, you know, actually work on Friday.

    Sigh.

Stock keeps dwindling and I told them that but they don't seem to care. I offered to give my credit card info so they can bill me if there was any issues but nope.

THIS MESSAGE IS IN REGARD TO THE WARRANTY WITH ASUS

I just finished up an online chat with a ASUS customer service agent regarding the warranty card that comes with the G73JH-A2. I asked him if we needed to mail in the card even though we registered online and he said yes, that this was the only way to take advantage of the 1 year accidental - 2 year general warranty. I only put this out here because with most companies, once you register online, that is all you need to do. This is just an FYI... Enjoying my laptop, hope the rest of you get your issues resolved soon...

I reseated the RAM. I tried running it with just the one below the motherboard, then with two, and then with all four in there. Nothing worked. The laptop booted right up into Windows 7, but there was nothing on the display nor on an external monitor. The Fn key toggles to switch between displays or turn the LCD on/off did nothing.

The night before, I played Crysis for about an hour. The GPU temp was about 82C. When I shut it down, it was working fine. The next morning, the LCD never came on again. I had the laptop from Thursday to Sunday and Monday it was dead.

Maybe double-check- I got one right away that actually gave me an authorization # and very step-by-step instructions on getting the warranty completed. I was impressed (other than the fact that I had to mail it in).

Played Crysis myself for a couple hours last night- ran really well. I never had a PC to play it before so I was having a good time. Feels a lot like Far Cry (for obvious reasons).

So I sent an e-mail to AMD about whether or not they plan on supporting the Mobility 5870 with drivers and this is the some what convoluted response I got. Most of you may have already known this but I didn't so please don't attack me or something lol

    "Dear Customer,

Your service request : SR #{ticketno:[removed]} has been reviewed and updated.

    Response and Service Request History:

The correct point of contact for support of your laptops mobility chipset and direction to drivers is the laptop manufacturer, Asus

The Mobility Radeon ATI Catalyst drivers for Windows 7 are beta and are only available for Windows 7 beta releases. For up to date Mobility Radeon graphics drivers for Windows 7, please contact your laptop manufacturer.

ATI Mobile Graphics products in notebooks

Support for mobility chipsets comes from the laptop manufacturer not AMD. All help from AMD for mobility chipsets is self help online, there is no web based or phone based support for mobility chipsets at this time.

The correct drivers for your laptop are the ones from the laptop manufacturer. The drivers on the AMD website are not for your laptop unless you pass the verification download. Your point of contact for support remains the laptop manufacturer.

    Mobility Radeon Support for Laptop/Notebooks

AMD Customer Care is dedicated and focused on delivering accurate, up-to-date online mobility product support.

Currently, we do not offer direct telephone or email support. The Mobility Feedback program is intended to gather driver specific feedback only and not intended to solicit regular support inquiries.

There are 3rd party drivers and utilities available on line. They are not recommended or supported by AMD Customer Care, they are popular with laptop users.

If you search online for Omega Drivers or ATI Modder Utility you should be able to update drivers to more current ones than offered by your laptop manufacturer.

    http://www.omegadrivers.net/

    http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php

Please note the information below from the Driverheaven webpage.

“Terry Makedon: AMD Manager for Software Product Management Graphics Product Group issued Driver Heaven with the following statement in April of 2007:

"AMD (formerly ATI) introduced the concept of Catalyst Mobility which is a generic driver that works decently for most laptops. The only way we are able to do this is through permission by a laptop manufacturer (OEM) to include their device in the Catalyst Mobility. We were the first company to provide graphics drivers for laptops to the general public, and we believe there is great value in this. At this point we only have permission from a few vendors and I personally wish more of them would let us. My suggestion is you contact your manufacturer and ask them to have your laptop included in Catalyst Mobility. As for Vista specifically we do not have permissions yet, but as soon as we do we look forward to releasing Vista drivers for laptops."”

In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.

    Best regards,

    AMD Global Customer Care"

This is not ATI/AMD's fault. The manufacturers are the ones that WILL NOT let AMD/ATI support their mobile cards.

    UPDATE: RMA - G73JH A2

Called yet again to ASUS Customer Service and yet again I am supposed to receive a phone call from a supervisor. This is the third time I have been told this.

I was also told by ASUS that repairing my old unit is not an option any longer () and I will have to wait for a replacement unit. My understanding is that they don't even have the parts to fix it and would have to wait for the part to arrive form Taiwan.

Called Excaliber today. Their customer representative is going to ask her manager to call ASUS directly for me and try to get me some more information. To let you know... They are expecting a huge shipment of A1, A2, & X1 on March 2nd.

    Good Luck

    Here I wait. :(

Wish me luck or a 5th of Bourbon :)

Anyone know how to get the bios to boot off a USB on this thing?

I added a new boot option, named it USB, gave it my USB drive as the device, but I didn't put anything under "path" and it didn't work.

Hit esc during post with the usb drive in. You'll see a boot menu and the usb should be an option.
