Evans or Drake did you try installing the newer ATI drivers following this procedure? I know the other way you tried failed:

    1. Run 10.2 driver, let it extract into c:/ATI/SUPPORT - but cancel the installation once the driver is extracted.

    2. Run Mobility Modder - browse to the driver in C:\ATI\Support\10-2_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu - hit modify. Wait until driver is modified.

    3. Open Device Manager, find your video card or VGA controller.. Right click and select Update Driver..

    4. Select Advanced

    5. Deselect search removable media, Select Include this location in the search,Click Browse to C:\ATI\Support\10-2_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Packages\Drivers\Display\XP_ INF\ Click ok. Click next... Continue anyway.

    6.Restart.

    7.Run Setup.exe in C:\ATI\Support\10-2_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\
    - Customize install
    - Deselect Ati display driver.
    - Install..
    - Restart

No that definitely would not work since the mobility modder doesn't even support any 5xxx cards. Pointless.

That's why everyone has been waiting for the modder update.

And on DriverHeaven it's only worked for one confirmed person so far with the 10.2 everyone else says it fails like it did for 10.1. In fact the one person it worked for was yelled at on forums for even suggesting it would work on other Windows other than XP :p

I buy 98% of my parts from Newegg and have for years before they became mainstream and am very displeased with how they are handling my RMA for a $1500 laptop. I won't be ordering another from them either, regardless if they have it in stock or not.

The drive you bought is slower then the Sony for much less, I would be upset too. There was someone else that got the Xotic bluray writer upgrade and I thought their's was 8x? Did you verify with them that you were given the right drive? In fact I remember looking at the drive they offered trying to figure out the model number because it writes at 8x vs the 6x on the Sony.

I think the fastest BluRay internal drives are the Panasonic and Sony ones. I haven't seen any 8x laptop bluray writers myself yet.

Me either and I checked every make and model available :D Panasonic also rebrands for silverstone.

Good advice on the 10.2 drivers btw, was a long shot if it would work but glad you confirmed it. I don't have mine to test with :(

I have a quick question, when I first bootup and get to my log in screen (where it shows the picture and the user name), or if choose Log Off from the Start Menu and get to the log in screen again, does anyone else's screen flicker after they log in? I guess you could call it a flicker (it's kinda like the screen distorts or has lines in it breifly). I'm thinking it's a driver issue maybe, or maybe I'm just over thinking it....

If it starts locking up getting ready for an RMA. Mine started off that way and eventually would put the lines on everything after only minutes of use and locked up. If you uninstall the video card driver it would normally fix the issue or run it in safe mode. See my other posts for everything I did to try and fix the problem before RMAing.

Sorry to hear about your laptop Moo, I hope you still have the Alienware to use until you get a replacement :( I know you will have a handful of "bad eggs" out of a bunch of laptops, but it seems a lot of people are experiencing similar issues across the board when they do show up..

Moo just sold his Alienware and mailed it off today which left him with 0 laptop for school so it could not have come at a worse time.... Not that anytime is a good time to have your laptop croak....

I saw someone on the Newegg review of the X1 had the same exact issue so i can see thing becoming widespread if the issues are the same ....

I'm starting to think maybe Asus is using multiple manufacturers for their screens and one of them is not good.

Seeing how this tech is brand new for the mobile sector im not the least bit surprised by it at all honestly....

Im sure Asus knew well and good these things were going to have issues but they have deadlines to meet and will just deal with it on a case by case basis as it happens....

Atleast they give you a good warranty but in Moos case he has to drive 1 hour to even get to a Fed ex drop off which just stinks.... They dont pick up from your door....

I found it interesting that uninstalling the GPU driver or running in safe mode (vga) the laptop I had would be stable without issues. Once you installed the driver all bets were off and I eliminated the Windows install by trying 3 different fresh OS installs. If I overclocked the GPU by even 1 mhz over stock it would crash, but if I lowered the clocks it would stay stable much longer than the stock speeds.

I would agree with your statement that perhaps there are faulty GPUs in some systems. I am anxious to get my A2 from Xotic to see how it runs.

The Card works but the I/O chip seems to have broken because the system will not boot if the GPU is not working properly

Alot of times when windows installs the VGA driver you wont see any issues even if the card was faulty so its not surprising you saw that....

You may have him listed but there was another guy that uses a rabbit as his avatar that started to see similar issues with his GPU after playing borderlands for a long time. His wasn't locking up near the rate mine was, but the bars on the screen did show up. I don't think he decided to RMA though.

Inner - Asus provides the 2 yr warranty, I say use it until it explodes then worry about it :) By 2 years most people that are hardcore enthusiasts will have sold for something better anyways and if your unit has issues it probably would of shown up by now.

Sorry 'bout that. I think you're right. With a new product things like this are bound to happen. I've lost so many days fiddling with computers...days down a black hole. Now I just personally don't have that luxury and I'm thinking about whether I should cancel my pre-order and wait it out a couple of months.

So you can take me off the list. lol

You forgot me. I had the 4GB issue. UPS delayed my shipment to Newegg until the 22nd. Now I'm really starting to worry that they won't have any X1's left when they get around to sending one back to me.

well i wonder if it was a last minute change? im pretty sure these were suppose to have 1066mhz ram?

last minute change result in no proper testing?

can anyone confirm that putting in a different brand of ram or different mhz and see how it goes?

I have complied a list many post ago of the known problems of this thread. I have request an ASUS Tech to phone me (3 times / no call) to review the list and test my new RMA unit for all of these known problems before they send it out to me.

I have found and used an e-mail address for someone at ASUS. Not sure who he is or what he does... All I know is it is the person that ExcaliberPC e-mailed on my behalf for the RMA. I also know I have not heard back from him either.

But trying to "break into" ASUS beyond the customer service represenative is near impossible. I will be calling them on a daily basis till I can receive insurance of the proper testing of my new unit.

I will also start to fax every possible ASUS customer service fax number I can find. I am ussally very mild manor. When I had to RMA my machine.... took it the best possible stride I could muster. But the lack of infromation or solid commitment to testing my new unit or merer consideration from ASUS is begining to wear on me quite thin.

I am going to push ExcaliberPC as well. If I cannot get satisfaction from ASUS it may be time get my money back from Excaliber and go with Ken or Justin (which is what I should have done in the first place)

If so, do a chargeback. Quickest way to your money, for sure.

I did... but I am in a FIGHT right now... haven't thrown the gloves to the ice yet, but, I am about to.

I will not give up.... I have been waiting for a new Laptop since Nov. 30th(G72)... 2 1/2 more weeks won't kill me. It will be when I have to RMA another unit back that things will get nasty.

Right now I am hopeing for some type of conpensation:

Upgrade to the A1 (which was my current order / switched to A2 to gt it sooner)

    and / or

    Overnight shipping from ASUS

anyway..... Thanks for the support from the entire forum !!!

    Keep ya'll posted

Well so far so good. Put the machine through it's paces and it did pretty well on Crysis. The headphones are pretty comfy. Wasn't expecting that. Looks like we got a different mouse to US as well, it's got 2 side buttons, but doesn't do side to side for the scroll wheel. I'll be sticking with my G5. Also will be sticking with my DELL backpack as it has the top zip as well.

I'll put it through it's paces tonight. Been a hell of a ride. Good luck to all still waiting.

I don't understand the obsession with the A1 or A2.

Same crap except an extra magnetic-based hard drive <-- would be removed by me in a few months anyway to make room for an SSD ;)

I guess some people are really into blu-rays on their laptops, not me. I have a nice HT setup for that.

Not an owner but reading this thread. Just curiouse if the laptop has easy access to clearing the cmos and removing the battery for 30 seconds? I own some older Rog's G70's and Asus is know for shaky bios out of the gate with new models. Im wondering if the ram and video issues arent the result of a confused bios and a reset may help? Just throwing stuff out there I havent seen tried yet to help! Also are most of the models comming with 4 x 2 or 2 x4 sticks ?

Na the W90 was a lot worse off, even still it was the best laptop I ever had I just sold mine like a week ago and miss it already. The G73 is a better value for the money and a lot smaller/lighter but the W90 was a power house.

The G73 feels like a 15" to me now after using the W90 for so long.
