So if I do a clean install using the windows 7 iso link and the driver disk, will I lose anything that I need on the laptop besides the useless bloatware? I won't loose keyboard lighting or webcam features will I? Thanks in advance.

    D'oh!

I've been trying to get a fresh install on the G73JH all day now. :( I can't seem to figure out how people have done it with the recovery software.

First, mine didn't ship with any recovery media. I have the hidden partition and a driver disk. It seemed, from peoples' comments in this thread, that people were burning a recovery disk, installing from that, and just powering down when it asked for the driver disk.

Unfortunately the only recovery disks I have been able to figure out how to make so far is the 6 recovery DVD's that basically do the same thing as recovering with the hidden partition (I think it just splits the contents of the hidden partition on to 6 DVD's in addition to whatever software it needs to use it). I have so far installed once from the recovery DVD's and once from the hidden partition today...both leave me with the factory state (with all the bloatware intact). I also believed some false info that I could use a non OEM Win7 install DVD and still be able to use the CD Key from my G73JH with that install...as I'd suspected before he got me to try it...it didn't work.

I really just want a lovely fresh Win7 install on this thing, but can't figure out how to do that using the CD Key it came with.

    Any help?

    Thanks!

you can use a retail copy.... don't put in your key... skip that part like you wold if you were going to use it as a trial. then once you are up and running put in your key in the my computer properties window at the bottom... at the most you may have to call microsoft to activate but it only take a second... it most certainly does work... this is exactly what I do everytime...

you have to skip putting in the key and finish the install as a trial the put the key in after its up and running

There is a link in the NBR forums somewhere with downloads from Microsoft for the Windows 7 ISOs. These will work perfectly with your OEM key.

I offered to host them a while back since I have both retail and OEM ISOs in my shop, but someone snapped at me and said it was illegal. Even though I wasn't including a product key. Whether they were correct or not was a different story, but I guess I'll keep from getting peoples' panties in a knot.

Thanks for the info! I actually tried all of that except for calling Microsoft for the activation. :( My second install (of three today) was from my upgrade W7 install DVD. I skipped the CD Key during install and then went just as you said at the bottom of the computer details page and brought up the CD Key dialog. Typed in my key...it sat and thought for a long time and eventually returned with the invalid key message. One of the options was to activate over the phone.

I guess I should have just done it. Oh well. Guess I'll be going after my fourth W7 install today. :) At least the ones from the install DVD are fast. :D

I still do not understand the huge deal of "clean install" around here.

The machine has like 4 or 5 pieces of software that you may consider bloatware that you do not need. Having them installed does not lower system performance, they take up next to no hard drive space, and whats more if you don want them... all you have to do is uninstall them.

Its far faster and easier to uninstall 4 programs than it is to reinstall the entire OS & Drivers.

It just does not make sense.

Wow JS, this has all become quite a quagmire ;) Since the external outputs display fine, it's got to be a problem with the actual screen or any connection from the GPU to it. I don't know whether to be happy or disappointed for you either (at least the better mouse was a plus), but I do believe I won't get to keep my 1333. I sure will try to talk them into swapping the mem if my replacement is going to come with 1066.

Understandably, Asus wants me to go back to original config to see if the SSD is causing the problem, I know, lol, but it was going to happen anyway for the RMA. Mine's an X1, so all that is likely to happen is I lose the 1333 and recovery disc, no mouse for me. Maybe they will surprise me, but I can hold no expectations. Like you say, at least I may get an quick turnaround since they may have supply by now.

If I lose the stuff I had, I may just go the way of The Moo.

I hope your replacement does well, please keep us informed.

After reinstalling windows from the recovery disk and support disk to my new HDD I realized that the Windows Office trial was not included on the support disk. Anyoe know where I can DL Windows Office legally and if I decided to buy a serial later I will?

I agree with this completely - what I found were few games suites, that are easily removed, the Creative software, and one or two other minor items. They really shouldn't be impacting performance in any real noticeable way.

Many others are essentially weblinks - no harm there.

    Office?

Yeah Open Office is an open source free alternative, or you can get the Office 2010 Beta free right now and its good for like 6 more months I think.

    I like Office 2010 quite a bit.

I have read that some have realized that a Clean Install speeds up the machine significantly and that the number of processes that have to load at boot are significantly less with the clean install...

    Not true?

I totally agree if your keeping the same HDD C: that is already on it, just use a good uninstaller, but it makes sense when you want to install on an SSD like I did. That is where you want it as it is a proper "back to square 1" procedure over trying to use the recovery partition which may or may not be a proper way to install your W7 on an SSD. Since the option for a fresh install was there, I had no need to see if the recovery partition would be ok or not.

Now now, I will keep it all on the up & up :) Everything goes back if that's what the RMA calls for and I will make a great case that I should still have 1333 in any replacement. Personally, I wouldn't mind if it was just fixed, that way I can just slap my SSD back in, restore the files to my second drive and be back in business.

What's funny is I haven't even taken the battery out of it packaging yet. Bet they will get a kick out of that.

No problem... I've been trying to tell people this for a while... The only time OEM and retail matter is in the first time it asks for your key during install and for online activation... If you just skip it during install and then just call microsoft you are good to go with no issues...

For me a clean install ensures that without a doubt things are the way I want it with nothing I don't want... it doesn't take long and for me makes a huge difference

Another question: What program are you all using to read temps and control fan speeds on the G73jh? This thing does not seem to get warm at all, but I would still like to verify by seeing some actual temp readings. Thanks.

For me it was. I have 75 processes running, before it was in the high 90s and that was after I had uninstalled all the bloatware I could find.

I had installed all my programs/games on drive D: Drive E was for downloads etc, my anime :p Drive F was for work related documents and my music.

When I did a clean install I kept the partitions and did it on Drive C. I lost no programs, my media files or my documents. I rather like these partitions :p

=( One of the rubber stoppers came off of my G73. Super glue ftw?

Two weeks in, this lappy is so freaking quiet. It's gonna get a good dosage of Mass Effect next week because of Spring Break. I also just got my Astro Scout Backpack for it, and I need to take pics of it. Three days of usage and it distributes weight evenly, fits the laptop PERFECTLY, and secret pockets galore. LOOOOOVE this machine...

So far so good with the Asus RMA process. They were polite, helpful and Asus is paying for 2 way shipping, kinda nice since I thought I had to pay to ship it and they pay for it back.

I was polite yet very firm in my speech that if they choose to replace my unit, it must come back with 1333 mem and they can swap out the mem from my return if they choose. I asked her to include it in the RMA and I will write it all over the box and on a letter to the tech inside the box. She was confident that it would happen if replaced.

As anyone may have guessed, removing the SSD and F9 to factory did not fix the problem and watching how long it takes for this to boot now highlights just how good a SSD with W7 is. It took 30 seconds for a full restart with the Intel and I see now back at factory Seagate it takes 79 seconds.

Wish me luck, Fedex gets it today.

    Good luck QUAG!

How many hours did you use the machine before it went kaput on you?

Which SSD did you have in there?

What are your opinions of the machine otherwise? Any serious annoyances? Any things you REALLY loved?

Thanks for your time and again - good luck!

Thanks corpfan, I would estimate 140hrs, separate in 3 parts: gaming (heavy GPU), rendering (heavy CPU), and general use (heavy NBR ;) ). Only 1 BSOD a few days ago, but it was a doosy as it made a loud noise for a second or two crashing. I was playing BC2.

    In the sig brother.

I still love it and more than willing to give it another round as long as my 1333 comes back if replaced. I understand new model growing pains and that's not a problem since we have the good coverage.

Serious annoyances? lol, how bout a left half fruit stripe gum and Tim Leary camping out in the right half of screen

I love that it has everything I want and nothing I don't that could of caused the price to increase. The laptop was designed like someone was in my head.

Much appreciation and I hope everyone elses comes out good stuff.

Actually Q, you may want to send it n pronto. I know of one user here who was upgraded from the X1 to an A1! Stock is so low at the repair center that they just give you what comes in first. You could score an extra hdd, the bag and the mouse for free.

Indeed JS, I seen that same post a few days ago. I am all over this, just dropped it off at Fedex. I'm all for an upgrade, just no downgrade. I think this fubar qualifies as the piano on my head I've been expecting. Just had a funny thought, my avatar is radio controlling your avatar :D

That's a mighty fine reason right there ziddy, I didn't think of a before and after process count, good info.

You're going to need luck cause they promised John an A1 upgrade and he still got an A2 with the 1066 mem even though his faulty A2 had the 1333. I on the other hand got all the luck cause I went from an X1 to an A1 for free and kept the 1333 mem. I almost feel bad enough for John to send him my A1 for his A2 and then I come to my senses.

Ohhhh, you dirty "motherfather"! No worries though. I just installed my Sony Blu-Ray Burner. Now I have an A1 Killer! Except for my 1066 memory

Quag, it's also nice that you don't have to send in more documentation to transfer the ADW or std warranty. It's all set to go, and you need to do nothing in that regards. Here's a question though: If I call to get my 1333 memory back, since I can't get to the last ram slot, if I have 3 sticks of 1333 and 1 stick of 1066, will it all be defaulted back to 1066?

Mmmmm, possibly, but not necessarily on the RAM - unless you ordered it upgraded?

If you didn't upgrade it through a reseller, it seems a 50/50 proposition at the moment. A 1066 shortage seems to have lead many to have 1333, but the intention seemed to be having them loaded with 1066 as a default.

I have had this happen on multiple keyboards on multiple machines. It really seems like it is caused by the user and not the keyboard. SOmetimes we hold the <SHIFT> key too long. But usually it is on keys that are close/closer to each other.

EDIT: I am fairly certain that it is highly unlikely the only key on the keyboard with issues is the <SHIFT> key. There is no lag in the key, he is just holding it down too long!

Ok, so question for A1 owners (or even X2 or blu-ray added A2).

I have a blu-ray movie on hand - and cannot find software anywhere on the computer to play it - any ideas, or suggestions for cheap but effective software if not?

My laptop just shipped and I'm hoping for no surprises. . .

I switched from an A1 to A2 with bd. It appears from Justin that they also were delayed by lack of BD availability. I didn't specify that they test the laptop for functionality though I'm hoping they did.

And dreaded UPS is unable to retrieve tracking info and has a server time out. Seems a lot of people are using the tracking service.

Finally jumped into this forum because I am typing on my A1 that arrived today!! This machine is amazing. So far, I haven't done anything in terms of upgrades/reinstall/removing partitions/modifying the system in anyway. I'm not all that savvy when it comes to doing those types of things, so I may just leave it stock. But I do have a few questions hoping someone can answer... What is the point of having two partitions on my second (500gb) HD? How would I go about making it one partition, if I so choose? Is there any updating you guys would absolutely recommend (drivers, programs, etc)? Any other info for a new system?
