I don't understand how it could be appearing as raw on the other machine then.

Here's a thought: if you have the A1 or A2 you have two filled drive bays; are you sure you put the SSD into the correct bay? The SSD should read Disk 0, NOT Disk 4, in Device Manager (Location).

Otherwise I'm at a loss except to say try partitioning the SSD in the machine that reads the drive as raw; at least you know for sure that one is recognizing there is a drive there.

I just got my A1 today and have been configuring it. During the process, I closed the lid while the system was idle. It went into hibernate mode as expected. Later, when I revived it, all worked fine, except that the screen was at max brightness. When I used the Fn keys to reduce brightness, I got the pop-up pie-chart graphic that showed the brightness diminishing, but the actual screen brightness did not change.

After a reboot, everything worked fine again.

Anyone else seeen this or have any ideas?

Got my A1 yesterday, 22 hours after ordering from NewEgg. Spent some time setting it up, getting rid of bloatware (lots and lots of bloatware), and installing some games and so far, I'm very impressed with the build quality and feel this monster of a laptop offers. The screen is awesome, the keyboard is great, and the speakers sound better than any other I've heard on any other laptop. I'm also very happy with the free re-branded HP voodoo mouse and the targus backpack. My only gripes so far is that it will not fit in my Oakley kitchen sink backpack, the partitioning of the hard drives (c'mon Asus, 5 partitions? Really?), the lack of a recovery disk, and that it makes my quad core 3.8ghz desktop look not as fast anymore :GEEK:

My new Hitachi 500 gb/7200pm HDD will arrive from Newegg today - After installing windows 7 from the recovery disk, I'll need to install drivers from the drivers disc. Question: Should I install the video driver from the drivers disc or is there an improved video driver available to DL somwhere online? I believer I've seen a 10.3 version available? Opinions? Thanks.

So, now that there is no extra disc...

What is the BEST METHOD to do a clean install? Or is there one?

Or, is it better just to add/remove anything you don't want?

    Any suggestions here?

While the partitioning is silly, it takes all of 3 minutes to fix. Just go to "Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Storage->Data Management." Select the D: partition and delete it. Then extend the C: partition. Select the F: partition and delete it. Then extend the E: partition. Finally, rename the E: partition D:.

Are there possible stability issues doing this? Why the separate partitions in the first place - what is the point?

    None that I've ever discovered!

Theoretically I suppose by compartmentalizing your data away from your program files if your machine was ever infected by a particularly pesky trojan, worm or virus you could just nuke your OS partition and not have to reload all your data, but in reality that's probably more of a hassle than it is worth.

The other idea being I guess that a multi-drawer file cabinet is more efficient than one huge drawer, but computers really don't care, and the analogy does not hold true IMO.

Yeah, that makes sense. Before my HDD died on my g73 I had deleted/merged the other partitions using a program someone had posted here on the forums. I actually wondered if doing this could have possibly been any reason the HDD crapped out, but I doubt it. I will be receiving a new Seagate HDD from Asus, but after reading many reviews of that particular HDD that Asus uses stock in these units, it seems they crap out fairly frequently. So I went ahead and got the Hitachi 500gb/7200rpm drive which had a lot better reviews on Newegg. I'll probably find a way of rigging up a caddy for the 2nd bay and putting the Seagate in as backup storage, but plan on using the Hitachi as my main HDD. If only there was an actual caddy one could buy for that 2nd bay (I have the x1 model). Using velcro/duct tape doesn't strike me as a great idea, but it might be my only option right now.

Posting this from my new A2. I'll type up a more lengthy review when I've had more of a chance to play with it. So far so good though.

It never even saw a single boot in it's stock configuration, before the first power on I already replaced one of the drives with a 128gb SSD.

I got the good mouse, which I'm happy with but I haven't checked the ram speed yet.

Like I suspect alot of users, I'm coming from a Gateway p7811fx, and I'm still completely impressed with the overall speed of this system. In a word: ROCKS.

Thanks again to pccanada.com for getting me this sweet piece of kit as quickly and as painlessly as possible.

It would help if people put what G73JH they have in the signature (or at least in the post). Then maybe we'd know if we were trying to compare A1s to A1s or if we're trying to compare A1s to A2 (or X1s or X2s).

First off sorry for the long story. I got my G73JH-A2 yesterday. I then deleted all of the bloatware and downloaded Steam. The only game I have downloaded right now is a 5 year old game called Rome: Total war. When I first tried playing it I couldn't even get above 10fps in battles on the lowest graphics setting. I then downloaded the 10.3 catalyst drivers and can now play on the highest settings except "Unit Detail" can only be set to "high" with a smooth frame rate. If I set it to "highest" it becomes extremely choppy when there are many units on the screen at once. This isn't a huge problem in itself but it worries me because I would've thought this laptop would be able to handle a 5 year old game with no troubles. Is something likely wrong with my unit or is this normal? Thanks

Edit: Also, when in 1920 x 1080 resolution I must have AA set to off

I'd really appreciate if somebody would post a reinstall guide as well, covering issues such as what is lost/gained? I see that the driver disk has a great installer which allows picking and choosing but what is not included on the driver disk and forever lost. Is the recovery partition still available if a clean install is done which leaves the recovery partition intact? Thanks!

Just got my A1 today from Portable One! Working on cleaning out some of the bloat via revouninstaller, and getting security stuff on, and my favorite vice (WoW).

Already uninstalled the creative suite to avoid any potential issues there - screen saver caused no problems, and the thing seems to be working marvelously so far!

I got the HP mouse, and not sure on the ram yet (reads all 8, not sure if 1066 or 1333 yet).

Got my new Hitachi HDD installed. Using the supplied win 7 recovery disk and the supplied support/driver disc I finally have everything back to stock form (including all the bloatware which loaded automatically). First thing I noticed is that the crappy touchpad is now much more responsive. The keyboard is still not the best, but isn't "sluggish", just still miss some keystroks here and there. But overall, after he reinstall I am happy the touchpad/keyboard seem improved. I wonder if this had something to do with the original install from Asus, or if the Seagate drive was somewhat corrupted from the factory or what. Not sure, but I am pleased especially in the improvement with the touchpad. Before it was barely useable in all honesty and I had bought a wireless mouse to compensate. Now I don't need a wireless mouse unless I am gaming.

The Hitachi HDD also seems quicker/smoother. The Seagate was audibly more noticeable also. I think this will be worth the $100 spent on the Hitachi. Now to continue installing all my software/music/etc I had on before. Probably take most of the evening.

My Asus GPU has bit the dust and I am not happy as one would expect, but after a BSOD playing BFBC2 a few days ago when it made a loud noise crashing, I seen this coming.

I'll try a restore, but fully expect it to be RMA time. :(

    wow, that sucks :(

Looks like this laptop's kryptonite is the GPU  Main RMA reasons were because of the GPU so far :(

Q, don't RMA it to ASUS if you can avoid it. Have the reseller just exchange it for a new one. You'll save yourself 3 weeks.

Well folks, hold the phone here. I recall others having this problem but still shows fine on an external and that is what's happening here, HDMI output is fine, so this could be a screen problem. I'm going to remove my youtube video for the time being.

The seller was Newegg, the return policy is 30 days, the purchase date was 2/9 and todays date is 3/10. Come on, you have to love that crap. I'll try it though.

    Q

Wait a minute, Feb only has 28 days, may have lucked out.

Newegg will RMA it. Did it before with my G51Vx-X3A. They paid for both ways. (Ground RMA; Shipped out same method it was originally shipped).

They're pretty lenient with the "30 Days" especially on high-ticket items.

    Cheers,

download a copy of W7HP from the internet... which isn't illegal, using key that aren't yours is illegal... use your key on the bottom of your laptop... don't use any key at all during install... after the install is complete and before you install your drivers go to "my computer" properties... at the bottom click on activate and this is where you put in the code on the bottom of your computer.... at most you will have to do an activate by phone which only takes a few minutes if the internet activation fails...

and it depends on if you deleted the recovery partition on whether or not its still there...

this process is exactly what I did... much cleaner install and you only get the stuff you want... i had to call microsoft for activation because I used a free upgrade disk that I have here at the house for the install

Got my A1 about 1 1/2 hours ago.

    Beautiful machine!

    Still tinkering, but initial comments...

Beautiful case, display, and backlighting - I knew I'd like it, but seeing it for real - nice!
    Did get 1333MHz RAM (Hynix)
Did get 5-button mouse....haven't tried it yet.
SSD (my first) is just awesome!
Backpack is nicer than I expected.

Back to uninstall, install, and configure... :)

I would have thought this too Kermee as they have always taken good care of me in the past, but alas, Newegg has lost a customer.
Their first response to my problem was to brush me off to Asus warranty by giving me their phone number and talk about how Asus will take care of me real fast with "no problem". It was like a scripted response. When I called her on the 30 return policy and why would they have it if not for this reason, after checking, she came back to the conversation with a willingness to RMA, but loaded with how all they are going to do is ship it back to Asus repair and if deemed unrepairable, THEN they would ship me a replacement. She used a 7-10 day delay tactic of the RMA process to shrugg me off and again have me deal directly with Asus. I don't totally hold this against them as if I was in their shoes, I'd want to know if it's a real malfunction or a user error, but since I'm in my shoes, I know it's a malfunction. When I expressed my disatisfaction, all she said was sorry.
I am not going to argue up the line. I made a comment in their closing review about if their willing to make it right, I'll listen, but until and if that happens, I am done with Newegg for future purchases and cancelled all preorders. I found it laughable that one of the fields in the review to answer was about "going the extra mile" for you, lol, they reluctantly opened the front door to see who is knocking.
This is not the service I've known them for and I would guess the G73 problems and replacements taking their price gouged inventory has made them put the brakes on good service. My Preferred account will be paid and closed with the quickness.

Thanks man, it's a good call as I didn't think of it, but it doesn't help. I'll look a little more into it in past posts, but I think it will be RMAd to Asus and after I've researched a little tonight, I'll call them. Lol, I only mailed my registration card 2 days ago even though I registered online 2 days after I got it.

If I'm looking at the results of a CPU-Z scan, how can I tell if I have 1333 ram, or the 1066? Or do I need to open up the back?

CPU-Z reports 1/2 the actual DRAM speed in the data contained under the Memory tab. That is because it is reporting the clock input to the DRAM, but the DRAM transfers data on both the rising and falling edge of the clock signal, thus running 2X the clock speed.

If CPU-Z says the DRAM clock is 667, then you have 1333 DRAM. If it says the DRAM clock is 533, then you have 1066 DRAM.

Man, I don't know whether to feel happy or gipped. The A2 I sent back to ASUS had all 3 restore discs, 3-button mouse, and 1333 RAM. My replacement A2 has only the driver disc, 1066 memory, but the better 5-button mouse. I can't even believe that it took 3 weeks for ASUS to send me a replacement.

Q.....Hopefully now that the Chinese New Year is over, ASUS will have more stock allocated to the repair center. They also didn't tell me what as actually wrong with my original A2, so I can't help you there. Sorry brother.

Thanks, Ira! I had some fairly big downloads going, so I didn't want to reset to BIOS - and this helped.

    Yay 1333 :D
