Wouldn't it be simpler to just image the drive and put it on a portable HDD? You could still restore the system from the image by using a system restore disc (which is less than 1GB).

Not going to even give the G73 another chance? Or do you have 2 and need to get rid of one?

First you can try using the latest ATI 10.3 beta drivers and see if that works. If not, send it back ASAP.

Sounds like driver issue but could be a faulty card if the drivers don't fix it

    Duds vs Great Deal
Jumping over to this thread. Sorry for the people who got duds. Those who followed the other (now 3 part) thread might remember that mine is one of the ones that had no problems (knock on wood). I don't think I could have justified spending a lot more on a clevo personally so I'm very happy that this worked out for me. I got the g73jh-x1 on newegg when it was still $1449 and I'm very happy with it. Thats really $300 - $500 more than I really should spend on a good laptop anyway, but for what I got it was worth going over budget that much. Clevo based would probably have been considerably more.

Backups, imaging to swap hdd, etc
If you have an ext usb hdd it would prob be easier than burning dvds as far as backup images go. Its still magnetic, and not a hard copy which would obviously be more secure long term - but for imaging and then swapping back to new drive it would be much more convenient for me at least since I already have an ext hdd enclosure.

Regarding backups, a hard copy of my overall documents, photos, music, contacts, saved work, etc is good to have - but for just an image of a clean install with some core apps and windows updates I'm fine with that residing on a data storage drive somewhere since worst case I just have to reinstall + update again if the image ever goes kaput. It's also easy to duplicate the backup, keeping one the "back to the drawing board" backup, and the other a backup that you can apply incremental backup updates to as you go along.

btw I also make a point of moving the user based folders (documents, pictures, etc) so that they are referenced from a secondary hdd. You do this from the properties of those user folders, pointing to the other folder location on the secondary hdd - not manually moving them like a normal folder. That way if the OS or OS drive ever craps out entirely, said data is still on the secondary hdd. I'm sure some other people here do that but since it was in mind I thought I'd pass it along. You can also mount drives as folders instead of drive letters but that's another story.

Just a heads up. I bought Batman Arkham Asylum off of Steam. I was waiting for this when some of you jumped of the GFWL deal and hoping Steam would match it.

Not quite, but I did get it for $22 + Just Cause. Good enough for me.

Oddly Batman is on sale for $24, but if I you buy Just Cause also, total is $22. It's $2 less to buy both games. Hehe, gotta love Steam sales.

I was able to get my WEI graphics scores up to 7.2. I believe it may have been the power mode I was in, I hadnt switched that to High Perf.

To try and solve the crashing, I tried removing Creative (no help) and installing the 10.3 video drivers (no help). After my 4th crash in an hour, during the restart Win7 ran an auto-checkdsk that didnt find much, maybe 1 bad index, but since ran I haven't had any crashes. Miight be chance, but the laptop ran for 3-4 hours with no crashes while I surfed and then built my recovery discs and ISOs.

I decided to try and install my Intel SSD. I found another thread in this forum that provided Win7 ISOs ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=428068), and this seemed like a much better install route than using 6 recovery discs to recover a partition i didnt want. Unfortunately, whenever I try and install via a DVD burn of the ISO or a Flash Drive made using the provided method, I get the following error right after starting the install:
    "A Required CD/DVD Device Driver is Missing. If you have a . . . "

A google search of this error turns up lots of suggested Win7 install options but none that have worked for me so far.

My questions: Am I wasting my time trying to install from this ISO, will using the 6 recovery discs do basically the same thing?

If not, has anyone installing a Win7 ISO (for a new SSD or otherwise) in a G73 encountered this error, and what can I do to address it?

Currently I'm downloading the ISO files again. I havent moved to the 6 recovery discs because they require that I remove the second 500 Gig drive I left in there.

Id appreciate any suggestions. With the amount of people installing SSDs in this thing, someone has to have run accross this issue.

Thanks for trying to help iclicku, but as I said in my post I have tried running the Win7 ISO from both the DVD drive and from a Flash Drive (USB) of that ISO I made following the detailed instructions in this forum. Yes, I still get the error asking for a CD/DVD driver even when installing from a USB stick.

Both my friend and I have been searching via Google for several hours, turns up a lot of people with the same issue but no one with a solution that has worked so for.

I finally bought the G73 with the i5 in it and 1600x900. I installed Cryses, Cryses Warhead and BFBC2. But in every game allready in the menue the screen went into white stripes or blueish. A friend told me to try to deinsall the GPU driver and reinstall it. I did that and after that the games run for 1,5 hours without problem. But next day in BFBC2 i got blue screen after 1m in game 2 times (no white stripes) again and only hard reboot possible, in Cryses Warhead there was no problem.
Can someone please give me an advice what to do? maby RMA it? :(

btw the 3dmark06 demo run without problem and i got 12531.

Edit: i installed ME2 now after 5min screen blue :(

Try a system restore and hope that fixes the problem. Not many others have had the BSOD (blue screen of death) with the G73.

The "stripes and blueish" sounds bad... it might be a hardware issue.

My apologies for not reading your entire post thoroughly. Did not realize that you already tried the USB route. I got my W7 ISO from a copy that I had lying around. I did not DL the ISO from this forum. That seems to be he only difference I can see so far. I'm sure you were able to make a bootable UsBSB drive correctly but it's obvious a file of some sort is missng.

I'm curious as to why you haven't just used the disks that came with the laptop. My X1 came with OS and driver DVD. The reason I didn't use it was because I wanted to use W7 Ultimate.

I got my new G73JH and blew away all the partitions and installed win7 ultimate. I just noticed that I can't get into express gate even after I downloaded it and installed it. Do I have to create a separate partition just for expressgate? Thanks.

Are many of you guys having problems with your G73's? from what I've read the Creative drivers seem to be the cause of the problem for a majority but then again that's only from what I've read.

You do get a disk with the essential drivers in the box right? Creative is the standard audio chip in all G73 so you can't do without?

I am pretty sure this problem is related to your SSD. There is no hardware in the stock machine that causes the Windows 7 install to panic. Is there a driver you can provide for it at the beginning of the install? Is there a firmware update you can do on your SSD that makes it behave better?

The Asus G73JH-A1 no longer ships with an OS Recovery Disc. It was a special note tucked into the manual, looks like a recent change from Asus. The laptop suggests you create one, but this process creates a 6 DVD recovery package, which as I understand it will recover the entire partition. (Which could take up the majority of my SSD, defeating most of its purpose). I am going to try that today though.

I doubt my SSD is the problem, I havent even gotten to the portion of the install where I select where I want to install Windows. But that is a good troubleshooting suggestion, I will try and remove the SSD and install to the single 500 Gig normal HD that is still in there, see if the error occurs.

Right now Im building a new ISO USB drive using the second method detailed in this forum. Will try that first, then will try removing one of the HDs in my system and attempting to install.

Have two questions i ordered my A1 from newegg on monday and i got it weds.

i booted it up and it worked fine played modern ware 1 and command and conquer 3 with no issues.

on thursday morning i pressed the power button to boot it up and all it did was start to make the blue lighting flash on and off about every 5 secs. so i pressed the power button again it stopped then i pressed it it started again so i let it this way for about 5 min and then it booted up fine worked all day great even ran a full system virus scan. i shut it down and turned it back on about 5 times thursday night and it worked fine each time. yesterday friday i came home from work pressed the power button and it did the same thing with the lights and no boot. i removed the power cord and battery then hooked them back up pressed the power button and it turned all the lights on and the fans ran a little lowder then usual and no boot screen did not even turn on. i called asus while this was sitting here doing this and was on hold for about 5 min when the tech came on the line my laptop had booted up ato windows and was working fine and fans back to normal. i told hime this story and he had me remove the power plug and batt and hold down the reset button on the bottom for about 10 sec then the power button for 10 sec then hook cord and batt back up and it booted fine shutted it down and it booted fine again. laptop worked fine all last night with out a problem. this morning about 30 min ago i pressed the power button same issue. so i pressed the reset button and now it booted up fine again and off then back on....... anyone else having this issue???

also does anyone have the drivers for the new mouse it came with? mine did not come with the drivers on the driver disc.

If you look, you can find a full Windows 7 64 Home Premium ISO which you can burn onto a DVD.

If you need any drivers you can use the Asus Support site and if there is anything that you need you can't find can PM me or anyone else who has the Drivers DVD and we'll help you out.

    That's my suggestion.

The recovery DVD we have is essentially a clean Windows 7 install and the Drivers are on a separate DVD. So virtually the same thing as what I suggest above. You aren't losing out on anything but a few minutes it takes to burn a 3GB ISO.

    My WEI readings are 7.0 7.5 7.2 7.2 5.9. I presume the 5.9 is because of
    the HDD and not SSD.?

That's a new one to my eyes, you'll want to keep in contact with Asus if it continues.

Was any of this happening before you started installing your own software? Did you update any drivers other than what came on your driver disc? Did you install any funny business type software?

Geez. This is my first new laptop in over 7 years, and I can't believe after all these years that sleep/hibernate still can't be executed correctly. I always turned off sleep/hibernate functionality in the past since I never saw it work right. Guess that technology just isn't here yet lol.

I have noticed that the Preview Catalyst 10.3 do run hot. It's great to use and test that ATi will support the HD5870M.

But I am using the Asus VGA drivers again, temps are better.

If anyone wants, go into your power settings and disable hib or sleep in any and all of the profiles, there are quite a few and I personally never cared for either of those options. I'm an on or off kind of guy, nothing in between. I don't like my HDDs being turned off either, no screen savers, just a time limit on turning off screen power based on profile being used.

Like MarkS implies, maybe one day :)

Thanks, I actually managed to get my Win7 ISO working. I think I originally had a bad ISO, because I created a new Flash Drive using a different method. Ran into another problem but I believe that was caused by a bad USB card reader.

I now have an activited Win7 account on a clean install on my SSD right now, currently installing some programs. Wahoo, WEI hard drive score of 7.7.

Im listening to a podcast and have noticed that the audio cracking/popping sound has appeared to crop up for me. Not sure if I missed a necessary driver or if I should try out the creative drivers. Its not annoying me enough to track it down now, just starting to browse the forums about how people have solved it.

Crossing my fingers, but the hard crash bug hasnt appeared once on my fresh install.

I had the same problem on another ASUS, it was a while back so my memory of the fix is rather dim but after trying to install the new copy I tried UNinstalling and was told I couldn't because the routine could not find a necessary file. Then I deleted the EG folder and even that didn't allow me to re-install so as I remember I had to find the EG entry in the Registry and delete it by hand, after which the re-install went fine and ExpressGate worked again. I hope this is of some help... Another option I've read about is to try various versions of EG downloaded from the ASUS site; there are a bunch of them. Never tried this myself tho...

Yeah my comment was sort of tongue-in-cheek, but based on past experience.

I fully intend to test it out on this new G73 machine....I'm still installing software though...almost done!

after reading all the depressing/problem-filled posts, i wanted to try and spread some joy. i've had my A1 with an added SSD since tuesday and am proud to say things are working wonderfully. no sound problems, no display problems, no WEI problems. i've done some light gaming on steam, watched several dvds, surfed the web and my system has handled it flawlessly. i haven't done any modifying or benchmarking or anything, just wanted to use the machine stock and let it do its thing. hope the rest of you get all your problems figured out, because this laptop really is amazing.

forgot, one thing i did modify was to add software to allow for two finger scrolling using the touchpad. it works well, and hasn't screwed anything else up.

I suspect a respectable portion of these malfunctions are due to user negligence...like overclocking to ridiculous levels.

Are all the G73's made in Taiwan, or is it all Chinese now?
